Visually shows what is going in your body * The average smoker smokes one pack a day. 30 packs a month (Google) * The smoke was not held in the glass chamber which many commenters have suggested. Exhale hose clearly shown at 0:15 * It doesn't matter if the machine smoked all the cigarettes in a day, week, month or year, it's the same amount of smoke out of 600 cigarettes, the results would be the same. * if all the smoke had been blown back through the cotton, the results would have been even worse! * The smoke was drawn through and around the cotton, catching some, not all, of the chemicals and tar (evident by the accumulation in the hoses) and into the pump and exhaled. * The machine was set to smoke each cigarette at the same pace each time. * 30 packs x 20 per pack = 600 cigarettes were smoked * Each cigarette was smoked 3/4 of the way to reflect real world smoking allowing a quarter of it to just burn away while talking or thinking. * It took 3 days for the machine to smoke all of the cigarettes. * The chamber was cleared of smoke between each and every cigarette allowing air to enter. * Scenes were sped up and time lapsed to be able to see the visual change in colour occur. * The black stuff is called tar. Heavy accumulation of tar in the hoses showed up after only 10 packs. Tar from the next 20 packs overflowed and got sucked into the pump. It eventually ruined the pump. * With actual smoking, you also blow the smoke out past all of the same organs twice. * Lungs do self clean to take care of dust and debris from normal breathing in the environment. They weren't meant to be overwhelmed on an hourly basis by smoke from a burning object for life. * The smell of the tar and cotton balls at the end was vile. I felt quite ill afterwards. Can't imagine how a smoker feels on a daily basis. * To all parents and adults. Do your part to give kids a healthy life and prevent youngsters from taking up these bad habits. Never let kids see you smoke, vape or have a joint. Remember, out of sight, out of mind MUSIC BY Joakim Karud, Luvly http://youtube.com/joakimkarud

In honor of lung cancer awareness, take a stand/commit to protect yourselves from the health effects of tobacco use. Garrett Harding, outreach coordinator at Huntsman Cancer Institute, shows a demonstration of the effect of smoking on your lungs. In the video the inflatable pig lungs simulate the lungs of a person who has been exposed to normal amounts of air pollutants and has smoked a pack of cigarettes per day for about 20 years. How to quit smoking - video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdeHA_IyIMA&t= How Secondhand Smoke Affects Non-Smokers This video is all about the harmful effects of the secondhand smoke to the non-smokers. Fact Number 1! Of the 7000 chemicals and toxins in secondhand smoke, more than 250 are known to be harmful and 69 cause cancer. Secondhand smoke has the same harmful chemicals that smokers inhale. There’s no safe level of exposure for secondhand smoke. Fact Number 2! When children are exposed to secondhand smoke, they are more susceptible to ear infections, asthma attacks, respiratory problems, and sudden infant death syndrome. Secondhand smoke is responsible for hundreds of thousands of new cases of pneumonia and bronchitis in babies 18 months and younger every year. Fact Number 3! Secondhand smoke causes an estimated thirty four hundred lung cancer deaths each year in the US in those who do not smoke and increases their risk of lung cancer by twenty to thirty percent. In the US alone, secondhand smoke is responsible for forty six thousand heart-disease-related deaths every year in nonsmokers. The most recent studies report that roughly 88 million nonsmokers were exposed to secondhand smoke in America in 2007-2008. Fact Number 4! Pregnant women subject to secondhand smoke are more vulnerable to spontaneous abortion or miscarriage, stillborn birth, low birth-weight for babies, and other pregnancy-related problems. Fact Number 5! Some research shows that the effect of exposure for a few minutes to a few hours can be just as dangerous as chronic smoking on the heart! Low doses of tobacco are all that’s needed to trigger off a series of events that can lead to a heart disease! Please like and comment. And Don't Forget To Subscribe! CDC estimates that cigarettes kill more Americans each year than alcohol, aids, suicide, illegal drugs car accidents and homicide combined. Most people know that cigarette smoke and tobacco contain many toxic substances including tar, arsenic, nicotine and cyanide. The common dangers of cigarettes have been known for decades. However, few people know that tobacco also contains radioactive materials. Radioactive materials, like polonium-210 and lead-210 are found naturally in the soil and air. They are also found in the high-phosphate fertilizers that farmers use on their crops. Polonium-210 and lead-210 get into and onto tobacco leaves and remain there even after the tobacco has been processed. When a smoker lights a cigarette and inhales the tobacco smoke, the toxic and radioactive substances in the smoke enter the lungs where they can cause direct and immediate damage to the cells and tissues. The same toxic and radioactive substances can also damage the lungs of people nearby. Polonium 210 and lead-210 accumulate for decades in the lungs of smokers. Sticky tar in the tobacco builds up in the small air passageways in the lungs (bronchioles) and radioactive substances get trapped. Over time, these substances can lead to lung cancer. CDC studies show that smoking causes 80% of all lung cancer deaths in women and 90% of all lung cancer deaths in men. In 1952, epidemiologists at the American Cancer Society (ACS) launched the Hammond-Horn Study, a large, long-term follow-up study designed to examine the association of cigarette smoking with death rates from cancer and other diseases. For that study, 22,000 volunteers recruited a cohort of 188,000 men who provided detailed information on their smoking habits. These men were followed for mortality through 1955. This study helped to establish cigarette smoking as a cause of death from lung cancer and coronary heart disease. The commitment of the study participants and the volunteers who recruited them has been vital to the success of these studies. ACS follow-up studies have played a major role in cancer prevention at the American Cancer Society, as well as in other national and international efforts. More than 300 scientific articles by ACS epidemiologists have been published from these studies and findings have significantly contributed to tobacco-related research, and to the understanding of obesity, diet, physical activity, hormone use, air pollution, and various other exposures in relation to cancer and other diseases. For more about the Hammond-Horn Study, go to http://www.cancer.org/Research/ResearchProgramsFunding/Epidemiology-CancerPreventionStudies/HistoryoftheCancerPreventionStudies/history-of-the-cancer-prevention-studies . For more about Dr. Hammond, read Classics in Oncology: E. Cuyler Hammond,ScD (1912-1986) by Lawrence Garfinkel, MA available at: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.3322/canjclin.38.1.23/pdf . This was clipped from the 1975 film, The Answers We Seek, a Tobacco Institute sponsored documentary (propaganda) meant to cast doubt on the hazards of smoking, with the position that stress and genetics rather than smoking cause illness. Film uses scientists and doctors to refute the Surgeon General's findings that smoking causes lung cancer, emphysema, and heart disease. The entire film is available at the Internet Archive, as a part of the UCSF Tobacco Industry Videos Collection. The University of California, San Francisco Tobacco Control Archives Multimedia Collection contains audiotapes and videotapes related to the advertising, manufacturing, marketing, sales, and scientific research of tobacco products as well as materials gathered and produced by tobacco control advocates.

The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_effects_of_tobacco The health effects of tobacco are the circumstances, mechanisms, and factors of tobacco consumption on human health. Epidemiological research has been focused primarily on cigarette tobacco smoking, which has been studied more extensively than any other form of consumption. Tobacco is the single greatest cause of preventable death globally. Tobacco use leads most commonly to diseases affecting the heart and lungs, with smoking being a major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (including emphysema and chronic bronchitis), and cancer (particularly lung cancer, cancers of the larynx and mouth, and pancreatic cancer). It also causes peripheral vascular disease and hypertension. The effects depend on the number of years that a person smokes and on how much the person smokes. Starting smoking earlier in life and smoking cigarettes higher in tar increases the risk of these diseases. Also, environmental tobacco smoke, or secondhand smoke, has been shown to cause adverse health effects in people of all ages. Cigarettes sold in underdeveloped countries tend to have higher tar content, and are less likely to be filtered, potentially increasing vulnerability to tobacco-related disease in these regions... Smoke contains several carcinogenic pyrolytic products that bind to DNA and cause many genetic mutations. There are over 19 known chemical carcinogens in cigarette smoke . Tobacco also contains nicotine, which is a highly addictive psychoactive chemical... A person's increased risk of contracting disease is directly proportional to the length of time that a person continues to smoke as well as the amount smoked. However, if someone stops smoking, then these chances gradually decrease as the damage to their body is repaired. A year after quitting, the risk of contracting heart disease is half that of a continuing smoker. The health risks of smoking are not uniform across all smokers. Risks vary according to amount of tobacco smoked, with those who smoke more at greater risk. Light cigarette smoking still poses a significant (though reduced) health risk, as does pipe and cigar smoking. Smoking so-called "light" cigarettes does not reduce the risk. Tobacco use most commonly leads to diseases affecting the heart and lungs and will most commonly affect areas such as hands or feet with first signs of smoking related health issues showing up as numbness, with smoking being a major risk factor for heart attacks, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), emphysema, and cancer, particularly lung cancer, cancers of the larynx and mouth, and pancreatic cancer. Overall life expectancy is also reduced in regular smokers, with estimates ranging from 10 to 17.9 years fewer than nonsmokers. About one half of male smokers will die of illness due to smoking. The association of smoking with lung cancer is strongest, both in the public perception and etiologically. People who have smoked tobacco at some point have about a one in ten chance of developing lung cancer during their lifetime. If one looks at men who continue to smoke tobacco, the risk increases to one in six... Mortality Male and female smokers lose an average of 13.2 to 14.5 years of life, respectively. According to the results of a 50 year study of 34,486 male British doctors, at least half of all life-long smokers die earlier as a result of smoking. Smokers are three times as likely to die before the age of 60 or 70 as non-smokers. In the United States, cigarette smoking and exposure to tobacco smoke accounts for roughly one in five, or at at least 443,000 premature deaths annually. To put this into context, in the US alone, tobacco kills the equivalent of three jumbo jets full of people crashing every day, with no survivors. On a worldwide basis, this equates to a single jumbo jet every hour. Cancer The primary risks of tobacco usage include many forms of cancer, particularly lung cancer, kidney cancer, cancer of the larynx and head and neck, breast cancer, bladder cancer, cancer of the esophagus, cancer of the pancreas and stomach cancer...

I just wanted to share some recent research on the topic of second hand smoke and lung cancer in people who have never smoked. It was a topic of interest to me at AACR and I had a chance to meet one of the authors of the 2009 paper. Int J Cancer. 2004 Mar;109(1):125-31. Secondhand smoke exposure in adulthood and risk of lung cancer among never smokers: a pooled analysis of two large studies. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ijc.11682/pdf Clin Cancer Res. 2009 Sep 15;15(18):5626-45. Lung cancer in never smokers: clinical epidemiology and environmental risk factors. http://clincancerres.aacrjournals.org/content/15/18/5626.full.pdf+html or http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/pmid/19755391/?tool=pubmed There's an error in the video. I refer to one of the papers (CCR) as being published in 2011, when it was actually published in 2009. The author's manuscript was published online in 2011, two years after the print version.
