The belief is that high levels of so-called good cholesterol in the blood can reduce the risk of a heart attack. The medical name for "good" cholesterol is high-density lipoprotein, or HDL. Doctors commonly believe it reduces the risk of heart attack by removing fatty deposits that can block the flow of blood in the arteries of the heart. But Dr. Sekar Kathiresan at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston says the effects of high HDL have never been proven. He says the new study that he and other researchers did suggests that HDL cholesterol does not affect the risk of heart attack. He thinks the study has now broken "the major assumption over the last thirty years, that if you raise HDL cholesterol, the risk for heart disease will be lowered."The researchers say about four percent of people have a genetic variant, a change, that gives them a naturally high level of HDL. The study found that those who were genetically "programmed" to have higher HDL levels were just as likely to suffer heart attacks as those who were not. A second analysis looked at fourteen gene variants that increase good cholesterol. Dr. Kathiresan says people with the most variants had no more protection against heart attacks than anyone else. But he says there is no dispute about low-density lipoprotein, or LDL. LDL, the so-called bad cholesterol, causes a buildup of fatty substances inside arteries and increases the risk of heart attack. The findings appear in the Lancet medical journal. Another widely held medical belief has also come into question recently. For years, men over the age of forty have been told to get a simple blood test to see if they have prostate cancer. Now, experts on a government committee are advising them not to. Dr. Virginia Moyer heads the United States Preventive Services Task Force. She says, "Close to two-thirds of older men have prostate cancer and yet the huge majority of them never have a problem from it in their lifetime." The task force examined two large studies before deciding that treating the cancer found by the PSA test can do more harm than good. Effects of the treatment can include a loss of sexual ability and bladder control, as well as other problems including heart attacks. Some doctors support the findings of the task force, but others disagree. Urologist Deepak Kapoor says in about twenty years of PSA testing, death rates for prostate cancer have dropped by thirty-eight percent. For VOA Special English, I'm Carolyn Presutti. Some scientists and doctors believe statins are overused, but the latest round of debate in France goes even further. Professors Bernard Debré and Philippe Even have published a guidebook for thousands of drugs - and they believe statins are useless. Statin supporters Since his heart attack, 44 year old Stéphane Ricois has regular appointments at a major hospital in Paris. He has an unhealthy diet, he smokes and does not exercise, combining all the major risk factors. His specialist is particularly concerned about his high level of cholestorol. "Before the doctor told me, I didn't know I had high cholesterol. I'd never done the analysis before, because I was feeling fine." Now he takes Crestor, a drug in the statin family. Despite the controversy, many doctors still believe they prevent high cholesterol levels and cardio-vascular problems. Senior cardiologist at Georges Pompidou Hospital, Nicolas Danchin said: "In coronary patients, that is people who have had a heart attack or angina, statins not only reduce the risk of having a recurrence, but quite simply they lower the risk of death or, more accurately, put the risk of death further away, and raise the life expectancy of these patients in a quite significant manner". Statins are among the most prescribed drugs in the world. In France they are used by at least 4-million people, costing the insurance companies 1.5-billion euros a year. The French drug regulation agency ANSM believes they are an important weapon in a doctor's arsenal. Manager Joseph Emmerich said: "These drugs have been extremely well scrutinized for side effects and, anyway, there are not many drugs that can reduce mortality by 10% like statins." The alternative view Not everyone though is such a fan. Renaud de Langlade heads several companies in the field of advanced electronics. He took statins for ten years because his cholestorol readings were high. It was a decade of painful side-effects, professional problems and a family crisis. Now he has ditched the statins and he is back on top again. "Mainly I felt fatigue. When I came home I was drained. I had no energy, nothing. And when I say I had no motivation I mean none whatsoever," Langlade explained. "In the morning when I was back in the office, I was not 100% with the clients. But when I stopped the statins, even before I started exercise again, I felt much better, 10 times better, No more anxiety or stress, no more troubles and I could sleep. I returned to the normal workrate I had before. " One leading cardiologist has changed his mind about statins. Michel de Lorgeril from Grenoble University now believes they serve no purpose in lowering cholestorol to prevent cardiac problems. Indeed he even thinks they are dangerous. "We'll come to the inevitable conclusion in the end that these drugs are unnecessary and toxic, they must be removed from the market and the health service must stop paying for them," Lorgeril said. "As professors Even and Debré have already said, if you really want to protect yourself from heart disease and stroke, you should turn to something other than anti-cholesterol drugs." There are already other ways of looking after your heart that are unanimously endorsed by medical world. Exercise is one. My answer is that it really depends on you. I will show you the pros and cons of rice and go over what I believe is the healthiest rice today. There is a debate today about if you should consume rice or not: ⁃ The paleo diet community says to stay grain-free and therefore that rice is not healthy ⁃ Chinese medicine followers and vegans think rice can be an incredible superfood I believe there is validity to both but it depends on the person and the preparation of the rice. Rice to stay away from: Refined White Rice (This is not jasmine or basmati rice but the sticky white rice from fast food or Chinese restaurants.) Rice Cons: • Fiber, minerals and vitamins have been removed. • Study shows that people are twice as likely to develop diabetes as opposed to those eating whole grain brown rice. • Contains phytic acid (enzyme inhibitor) which keeps you from absorbing and digesting vitamins and minerals. • Contains proteins that are difficult to digest Rice Pros: • Whole grain brown rice is high in B3 which is good for heart health. • Whole grain brown rice is high in selenium which supports the thyroid and kidneys. • Certain types of rice contain GABA, a neurotransmitter that can support the brain and help reduce anxiety as well as support metabolism. So ... is rice healthy? Is brown rice healthy? It depends on how it is prepared. I believe if rice is soaked and sprouted, it unlocks the vitamins and minerals versus most rices that aren’t sprouted. I personally consume an organic rice from the company, True Roots. It is a germinated brown rice (soaked and sprouted) which kills off phytic acid and is easier to digest. In Chinese medicine, look up “qi” or “chi.” They believe that short grain brown rice increase your body’s “qi” which is your body’s life source and energy. It's one of the newest (actually oldest) gluten free alternatives! http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com In this video, I will answer the simple question of, "What is Teff?" but I will also dive into why we have issues with gluten these days, and what can be done to solve the issue at hand. -The demand for gluten-free foods in on the rise -Gluten is known to cause inflammation in the body - yet wheat is one of the oldest known crops, so why are we having trouble digesting it now? -Wheat has been selectively bred to increase yield and create ease of harvest and preparation, ignoring the nutritional impact (2) -Example: durum wheat has been created by humans due to the looser husk, which makes it easier to use on a mass production scale (2) -This change in wheat is likely one major cause as to why the common gluten in our food is so difficult to digest. -There are benefits of diversifying our diets -There are more than 50,000 known edible plants around the world, all with different nutritional profiles, yet we now have ⅔ of the plant food provided by three cereals - corn, wheat and rice (1). -This dependence on very few crops leads to both crop risk due to climate change, as well as a lack of nutritionally diverse dietary options (1). -Ancient grains, such as quinoa, millet, sorghum, teff and many others are starting to increase in popularity as both flour alternatives as well as additives to make cereals and other foods healthier (2). Teff: -Teff is the smallest grain in the world, originating from Ethiopia (1). If you have eaten at an Ethiopian restaurant, teff is the grain in the spongy pancake injera (3). -Highly pest resistant and easy to grow in many different climates, this grain is a promising addition to agriculture (3) -Gluten free. -Different varieties vary in color, from milky white to dark brown, with different colors having different flavors (4). -Teff is known to have a nutty flavor -Teff is a good source of protein, especially high in the essential amino acid lysine (4). -Also a good source of iron, calcium, essential fatty acids, fiber and phytochemicals (4). -Great for vegetarians and vegans due to high iron content that many of us get through red meat in our diets. -Fiber is important for glucose levels as well as reducing LDL cholesterol levels. (4) -Diets high in whole grains have been linked to a 20 to 30 percent reduction in developing type 2 diabetes (1). How to Add Teff to Your Diet 1. Make a gluten free flour blend to use instead of flour in recipes: whisk together 5 ¼ cup teff flour, 1 ¾ cups brown rice flour, 2 ⅓ cups ground golden flaxseeds and 1 cup sweet rice flour and store in an airtight container for up to 3 months in the fridge or 6 months in the freezer (5) 2. Use whole teff to make a breakfast porridge. Add whole nuts, berries and a small amount of maple syrup to flavor (6). Tip: If you enjoy the nutty flavor and would like to heighten it, saute teff in a dry skillet for five minutes before heating it into a porridge (6). There are many other recipes online, such as harder, almost polenta-like teff and other savory teff recipes! You can find teff at some natural food stores as well as online through companies such as Bob’s Red Mill or The Teff Company (6). References: 1.
