Mongolia's Mining Boom (2012)
The Big Dig: Mongolia is the new frontier in a massive, break-neck speed resources rush. Australian miner Rio Tinto is about to open one of the biggest copper mines on the planet in Mongolia, which will soon account for more than 30% of the country's entire GDP. "Some of the optimistic geologists we have say that this business could run for up to 100 years", Cameron McRae from Rio Tinto explains. But the company only cedes the Mongolian government a 34% stake, provoking worries about where the benefits of Mongolia's resource wealth will go. There's concerns the government is ill-equipped to strike complex mining deals in the national interest. "The deal is a financial transaction and whether it's really beneficial to Mongolia, I have many doubts about that", argues Dorjdari from the Responsible Mining Initiative. Environmentalists also worry that the mining push has come so fast and so aggressively that proper checks and balances are not in place. "Most tourists come to Mongolia because they want to see that pristine open space blue sky, but what if we couldn't offer it anymore?" Korean researchers develop technology to mine seawater for lithium
미래 핵심자원 '리튬' 바다에서 캔다 Lithium is a vital component of modern technology, but it's also dubbed the "oil of the future" with its application in electric vehicles. Great news for the country is that Korean researchers have found a way to mine this valuable resource from seawater. Park Se-young files this report. Lithium batteries have been around for decades, but their application in electric cars means that the demand for lithium is set to skyrocket, with some even calling it the "oil" of the future. This is why Korean researchers have been developing ways to extract lithium from seawater. South American saltwater lakes account for most of the global lithium supply, …and China has also been developing its lithium mines due to a three-fold increase in the price of the metal over the past year. But while the worldwide lithium reserves from these lakes is estimated to be 14 million tons, the total lithium content of seawater could be as high as 230 billion tons - a huge untapped resource. Korea's passive lithium absorption technology can extract zero-point-one-seven milligrams of lithium per liter of seawater,... and managed to extract five kilograms of lithium carbonate in six days,… bringing the technology one step closer to commercialization. "As a country surrounded mostly by the ocean, the securing of the technology is very meaningful and important." With Korean technology firms likely to need more lithium in the future, this use of Korea's maritime resources could give Korea a competitive advantage …especially amid the global rush for the metal. Lithium Australia to 'close the loop' on battery materials with complements to SiLeach® process
Lithium Australia NL (ASX:LIT) managing director Adrian Griffin speaks to Proactive Investors about the company's proprietary SiLeach® process, which has successfully delivered lithium phosphate in pilot plant testing. Lithium Australia aims to convert mine waste into lithium-ion batteries, a world-first. Griffin highlights the "positive" ecosystem for research and development (R&D) in Australia during the time the process was pioneered. He explains, "At the moment, Australia takes about half a percent of the value of the supply chain. If you put enough R&D in, you can actually leverage the outcome and get a lot more of that supply chain, and we should do that because we've got the tiger by the tail. "We actually control the inputs into the supply chain; what we've got to do is do the research to value-add to those materials. The supply chain, if you look at [projections], by 2025 it's probably going to be worth somewhere between 2 and 5 trillion dollars." Griffin teases more innovations in the pipeline, and indicates that the company is looking into all geographic options moving forwards to maximise returns, given a recent decision by Australian politicians to remove R&D tax credits.

Lithium miners and processors likely to enjoy a very strong market by 2027
Jose Lazuen and David Merriman from Roskill spoke to Proactive Investors following the publication of their 2018 Lithium market outlook report. ''We expect the market for refined lithium products, particularly those battery-grade products, to remain very tight and likely to enter a deficit towards the end of our ten year forecast''. ''An optimistic outlook for lithium miners … there's probably been a bit of an overreaction in the short to medium term.'' ''There's a lot of mine capacity expected to be built out but coming to the end of our 10 year forecast there's a great opportunity for lithium miners and processors in particular to have a very strong market''.

Cobalt discovery gives Lithium Australia 'another string to our bow'
Lithium Australia NL (ASX:LIT) managing director Adrian Griffin speaks to Proactive Investors about the integrated battery metal producer’s recent surprise discovery of cobalt at the Eichigt project, near its flagship resource at Sadisdorf in Saxony, Germany. “The style of mineralisation is quite interesting in that copper, cobalt, manganese and lithium doesn't occur together in many mineral occurrences… we are of course on the doorstep of the EV industry in Europe, and that EV industry will have a requirement for a lot of cobalt over the next few decades, I would imagine, and beyond. So this gives us a very good exploration target to service those markets,” says Griffin.

Nouveau Monde graphite targets North American lithium-ion battery market
July 12, 2016 -- Nouveau Monde Mining Enterprises Inc. (TSXV: NOU | Frankfurt: NM9 | OTC Pink: NMGRF) owns the Matawinie graphite property, located in the Saint-Michel-des-Saints area, approximately 130 km north of Montreal, Québec. The project is also in close proximity to the Lac-Des-Îles mine, the only graphite producer in North America. The company is targeting the North American lithium-ion battery market which has given priority to obtaining local, green and safe supply of natural graphite. In this interview with InvestorIntel Publisher Tracy Weslosky, Nouveau Monde President and CEO Eric Desaulniers: ◾Discusses the recent private placement raising $2.31 million and the robust economic assessment of the Matawinie project. ◾Outlines the quality requirements for graphite in the market at present. ◾Details the infrastructure advantages and the presence of skilled local labour in the proposed mining area. ◾Indicates where the graphene potential is. As InvestorIntel has reported previously, Nouveau Monde is one of several companies that have joined forces to acquire a micronizing and spheronizing mill to produce spherical graphite, which they describe as a critical step in the production of anode material used in lithium-ion batteries. The partners' ultimate goal is to achieve full qualification of their materials by lithium-ion battery manufacturers. They see themselves as taking part in the first real effort by junior graphite companies to address the needs of the battery makers. Just as importantly, the technology will represent a major improvement over methods at present employed in China. Your Smartphone Was Made By Child Slave Labor - Congo Cobalt Mines
Your Smartphone Is Powered by Child Labor at Cobalt Mines in Africa. Human rights watchdog Amnesty International has accused several tech and auto industry giants of turning a blind eye to child labor. In a damning report released on Tuesday, the organization found that major brands, including Apple, Samsung, Sony, and Volkswagen, were allowing cobalt mined by children into their products. Cobalt — a metallic element that is found mostly in minerals — is a key component in the lithium-ion rechargeable batteries that power electronic devices such as laptops, smartphones, and electric cars. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in central Africa, is the world's top cobalt producer, accounting for more than half of the planet's supply. According to the DRC's government, 20 percent of the cobalt exported by country is extracted from mines in the southern province of Katanga. Much of the cobalt mined in the region is sold to Congo Dongfang Mining International (CDM), a company owned by Chinese mineral company Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Company Ltd (Huayou Cobalt), which the Amnesty report describes as one of the world's leading manufacturers of cobalt products. According to Amnesty, the components produced by Huayou Cobalt are then sold on to battery manufacturers in China and South Korea, who, in turn, supply some of the world's top electronics companies. A 2014 report by children's rights agency UNICEF found that approximately 40,000 children worked in mines in southern DRC, and that many of them were involved in the mining of cobalt. 'There is lots of dust, it is very easy to catch colds, and we hurt all over.' Amnesty said its report was researched jointly with DRC-based NGO African Resources Watch (Afrewatch). The report is based on interviews of miners working at four sites in the DRC. As part of their investigation, researchers spoke to 17 children, ages 9 to 17. One child said he started working at the mine when he was 7. Most of the children interviewed by Amnesty worked above ground, collecting ore and sorting through rocks, which they then washed in streams and lakes around the mines. The children described working gruelling, 12-hour shifts in the extreme heat or in the rain, often for no more than 1,000 to 2,000 Congolese Francs ($1-$2) per day. Some of them explained that their school day was bookended with shifts at the mine, and that they also worked weekends and during the holidays. Paul, 14, told researchers he also worked underground in the mines, often spending up to 24 hours at a time in unsafe tunnels. "I arrived in the morning and would leave the following morning," he said. Researchers found that the vast majority of workers in the DRC's mines handle cobalt without wearing any protective gear, such as gloves or facemasks, despite the known dangers of chronic exposure to cobalt dust. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned that extended exposure to cobalt dust can result in "respiratory sensitization, asthma, shortness of breath," as well as dermatitis and a serious condition known as "hard metal lung disease." Amnesty said the children they interviewed complained of frequent illness. "There is lots of dust, it is very easy to catch colds, and we hurt all over," Dany, a 15-year-old miner, told the watchdog. Amnesty also found that many of the underage miners were malnourished and subjected to "physical abuse, sexual exploitation and violence." Many of the children endured regular beatings at the hands of security guards, who also extorted them for a cut of their earnings. "They asked for money, but we didn't have any... They grabbed my friend and pushed her into a tank containing diesel oil," said Mathy, who told researchers she was 12 at the time of the incident. In a response published as an annex to the report, Apple said that underage labor was "never tolerated in our supply chain and we are proud to have led the industry in pioneering new safeguards." The company said that it was "actively looking for any violations." Microsoft said that it did not "tolerate the use of child, involuntary or forced labor" in its supply chain, but added that it was "unable to say with absolute assurance" whether cobalt in its products could be traced back to ore in the Katanga region. Samsung SDI noted that "up until now, there has been no case of child labor violations reported or detected from Samsung's SDI's plants or suppliers." But like Microsoft, the Korean company also said that it could not determine whether its cobalt supplies originated in Katanga. Fundamentals likely to stay very strong for lithium - Mining Capital's Alastair Ford
Mining Capital's Alastair Ford talks lithium and the opportunities presented in both south east Asia and Europe by Pan Asia Metals and European Metals Holdings Limited (LON:EMH) respectively. Ford says that outside of China, there’s only one lithium project in all of South East Asia - Reung Kiet and it’s situated in Southern Thailand. It's held by Pan Asia Metals, a privately-held Singaporean company that’s due to list on London’s AIM market in the first half of next year. On European Metals, Ford says: ''I think they've got one of the very well-set lithium projects available to us on the market in London and indeed anywhere in the world ... it's especially attractive for its size but also for its location''. In usual form, Ford also touches on a number of other developments in the mining sector including the recent CRU conference and strengthening zinc prices plus suspicions copper will be the metal to watch in 2018.

ISRO Plans To Mine Energy From Moon By 2030 To Help Meet India Needs
This video shows you that ISRO Plans To Mine Energy From Moon By 2030 To Help Meet India Needs. From launching 104 satellites at one go, enabling commercial roll out of lithium-ion batteries, to taking the lead in providing energy security, the Indian Space Research Organization (Isro) is firing on all cylinders. Apart from planning for manned missions to Moon, Mars and even aircraft development, Isro is now working on a plan to help India meet its energy needs from the Moon by 2030. The premier space agency, credited with launching 225 satellites till date, plans to mine Helium-3 rich lunar dust, generate energy and transport it back to Earth. This comes in the backdrop of successful testing of lithium-ion batteries developed by Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre by the Automotive Research Association of India (Arai). This is expected to provide a fillip to India’s electric vehicles (EV) push. The government is now planning to transfer the technology to companies for commercial production of these batteries, reported Mint. Isro’s lunar dust mine plans were revealed by Dr Sivathanu Pillai, professor at the space agency, in February. Speaking at a conference in New Delhi, Pillai, former chief of BrahMos Aerospace, said that mining lunar dust was a priority programme for his organisation. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on 29 March, minister of state in charge of atomic energy and space Jitendra Singh said, “Technology is ready for transfer to Indian industries for undertaking the production of Li-ion batteries. BHEL has expressed interest in the transfer of technology.” This lunar dust mining plan comes in the backdrop of India’s plan to cut down import dependence in hydrocarbons by 10 percentage points by 2022. India’s energy demand growth is expected to outpace that of the other Bric (Brazil, Russia, India and China) countries, according to the latest BP Energy Outlook. Isro’s success on this front will also help reduce pollutants and India’s fuel imports. This assumes significance given India’s energy import bill of around $150 billion, which is expected to reach $300 billion by 2030. India imports around 80% of its oil and 18% of its natural gas requirements. India imported 202 million tonnes of oil in 2015-16. isro, pslv, indian space research organisation, hpvp, polar satellite launch vehicle, indian space program, isro news, indian space research, uslv, pslv launch, india space, isro tenders, isro latest news, indian space research organization, isro launch, indian space news, space research in india, indian space research centre, isro latest launch, isro projects ====================================================================================================== DISCLAIMER: Each and every content used in this video is not imaginary.
