Study links fast food to childhood asthma

Researchers have found a link between severe childhood asthma and fast food. A new study in the medical journal Thorax found that three or more weekly servings of junk food substantially increased the risk among teens and young children. The study says it could be the food's high concentrations of saturated fats which compromise the immune system of children, making them more prone to a whole range of health problems. Al Jazeera's Simon MacGregor Wood reports from London.

By: Chris Nallan LINGLESTOWN, Pa. -- New research links diesel fumes to breathing problems. "The increase in the amount of diesel fumes that are in the air seem to be directly proportional to the amount of allergy and asthma that we're seeing," Allergy and Asthma Specialist Doctor Robert Zuckerman said. According to Dr. Zuckerman, more people are getting diagnosed with asthma across Central Pennsylvania. "They've shown that this direct correlation with diesel fumes and becoming sensitive to ragweed," Zuckerman said. "(It's) causing areas of the lung that would not normally be exposed, to be exposed. Then the pollen comes," Zuckerman said. Asthma impacts all ages and it could happen to anyone. Dr. Zuckerman says it's important to realize the signs. "When you have asthma you have shortness of breath that lasts for hours to days," Zuckerman said. Harrisburg resident Tiana Baltimore suffers from asthma. Her attacks happen often, especially this time of year. Sometimes at-home treatment isn't enough. "If that doesn't work I'm straight to the hospital. They usually give me a shot or a treatment," Baltimore said. After testing, she found out she's allergic to almost everything under the sun. "It's mold, trees, grass, ragweed," Baltimore said. According to Dr. Zuckerman, an allergy shot may help lessen her asthma attacks over time. "I'm sure within a year her reliance on the inhalers will decrease," said Zuckerman. Zuckerman uses pulmonary function tests to check airflow in the lungs. Then he determines how bad the asthma is.

This salt increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, and if you consume it in large quantities you may suffer from high blood pressure.

En nuestra dieta existen alimentos que deberían ser llamados "veneno", porque tienen poco valor nutricional y hasta pueden ser perjudiciales para nuestra salud, explica el blog "El cuerpo que deseas". Conocidos como "venenos blancos", el azúcar refinado, la sal, y las harinas refinadas, entre otros, son causantes de diferentes enfermedades que son consideradas graves, pues son degenerativas, como la diabetes, la hipertensión arterial y hasta el cáncer, indica el blog "medicina-antienvejecimiento". 1. La sal La comida chatarra se encuentra llena de sal refinada, que aumenta el riesgo de padecer enfermedades cardiovasculares. De acuerdo con el blog antes mencionado, consumir este tipo de sal equivale entre 8 y 20 veces más que la que debiera comer. Pues con la finalidad de que el sodio y el potasio encuentren un equilibrio, se debe consumir de 0.2 a 1.25 gramos por día, pero si no se respeta, es cuando aparecen enfermedades referentes al corazón. 2. Azúcar refinada No es buena porque no aporta ningún nutriente, aporta energía, pero nada más. Esta se conforma de glucosa y fructuosa. El problema es la manera en que la consumimos, porque las frutas y verduras, por sí mismas, ya contienen azúcar. Las azúcares refinadas son causantes de obesidad, de un desequilibrio nutritivo, caries y más. Los edulcorantes químicos también son dañinos, pues aumentan el riesgo de cáncer, como el aspartame, la sacarina y ciclamatos, que podemos encontrar en productos como el refresco light. 3. Harina refinada Cuando más fina y blanca es la harina, menos fibra, vitaminas y minerales contiene. El pan blanco, el pan de salvado, los panes de bollería (donas, por ejemplo), no contienen vitaminas ni minerales, mientras que favorecen las caries, el cáncer, el colesterol y la diabetes. Los panes más recomendables son el pan de centeno y el pan integral. 4. Arroz refinado Al igual que la harina, la refinación por la que pasa el arroz le quita todo el aporte energético y vitamínico que puede tener. 5. Leche de vaca Se considera que es la principal causa de alergias en los niños, según la Academia de Alergia, Asma e Inmunología de Estados Unidos. Y es que la leche, además es rica en grasas saturadas y colesterol. In this episode I talk about one ingredient that is being added to most chips and so many other products that is toxic for the body. Usually used to make food cheaper but never meant for human consumption, meant instead for machinery and magazines. Check out this juicy video and empower yourself with knowledge! I am a HUGE fan and HUGE encourager of everyone learning to read ingredients and reading them before purchasing each product in the grocery store. The days of loading up your cart with everything based on looks and without any investigation are over if you want to be healthier and do good for your body. There are hidden and harmful ingredients in our food that the Food and Drug Administration is not regulating and our Government is not taking a stand. So its important for us to TAKE OUR POWER BACK and know what we are feeding ourselves and our kids. Ingredients are listed on packages in a particular order. The first ingredient is the most of and the last ingredient is the least of. So when you see sugar or salt in the ingredients list, is it at the top of the list or perhaps even first? For example if sugar is listed as the number one ingredient, it means this product has more sugar in it than any other ingredient. Strawberry jam with sugar as the number one ingredient means there is more sugar in this jam than strawberries. Also can you pronounce the ingredients? Do you even know what they mean? Are there more than 5 or 10 ingredients? Are there food colorings? Yellow #5 which is banned in most European countries or has a mandatory warning label causes sterility in men, hyperactivity in children, asthma, allergies, fatigue, blurred vision, migraines, anxiety and is cancer causing. Food containing yellow #5 is freely and extensively used in USA and Canada. And it's found in sooooooo many children's cereals and snacks. Yikes! More ingredients I avoid: Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) - a slow poison that hides under many ingredient names and is linked to neurological disorders, obesity, Alzheimers, Parkinsons and so much more Aspartame - I call it rat poison, it's branded as Nutrasweet and Equal, and is used instead of sugar. Found in chewing gum and diet food. Corn products - unless stated organic, they are GMO (genetically modified in a lab). High fructose corn syrup - GMO and lethal for the body, causes diabetes, hypertnsion, weight gain, etc. Canola oil - never meant for human consumption, its a machinery oil. A great insect repellent as no bugs will eat it. GMO product. White sugar - I call this white death as it causes the immune system to stop for 20 min after consuming. Leading cause of weight gain and diabetes. Biggest over the counter drug and everyone is addicted to it. White salt - stripped of all nutrients, causes inflammation in the body and leads to diabetes. White flour - devoid of nutrients and an allergen to the body. No bugs will consume it since they will die, should tell us something. Wheat - an allergen to the body that causes inflammation and makes the body work hard to process it. Dairy - causes inflammation and excess flem in the body. Non organic milk means cows are being poorly treated, over milked and fed GMO feed. Food colouring - Blue 1, 2, Red 3, Green 3, Yellow 5, 6 cause cancer and tumors in lab animals. Soy - not a health food as we have been brainwashed to believe. It is GMO and effects fertility, estrogen levels and is very acidic for the body. And other ingredients you don't understand or cant pronounce. Our health is in our hands and we have the power if we have the knowledge. In a study of 200 patients, researchers found that asthma control, lung function and symptom-free days improved among those who participated in a self-management program. However, the program did not reduce the number of asthma attacks that occurred. And finally, from Boston - According to research in the Journal of the American Medical Association, a healthy lifestyle can protect men from heart disease. In a study of nearly 21,000 men, researchers found that those who adhered to at least 4 healthy lifestyle factors such as normal weight, not smoking, regular exercise, moderate alcohol intake and consumption of breakfast cereals and fruits and vegetables, had a lower risk of heart failure than those who did not. So is the notion that eating soy foods will supply Vitamin B12 to vegetarian diets. If you wish to eat soy, eat only fermented foods made from organic soybeans: natto, tempeh and tamari.
