After Childhood Cancer, My Big Life | Sammi Janower | TEDxYouth@BeaconStreet

10:04
As a 3-year-old child, Sammi was diagnosed with a brain tumor, requiring brain surgery, two years of chemotherapy, and many months in the hospital. Now, at age 16, Sammi has gone from being the inspiration for bike riders in the Pan Mass Challenge (a ride for Dana Farber) to riding in the race herself. This petite, 4’10” high school junior demonstrates some pretty outsized strength. My name is Sammi Janower. I am 16 years old and currently a rising Junior at the Noble and Greenough School. When I was 3, I was diagnosed with a pediatric brain tumor. I spent much of my childhood feeling nauseous and tired as the result of my treatments, some of which have had undesirable long term side effects. For my TEDx talk, I would want to focus on the idea that everything happens for a reason. Although I went through a terrible experience, I am now able to help others in the same situation and try to use the story of my cancer journey to inspire others. I have spent years helping to raise money for research into less toxic and more effective treatments for brain tumors. In addition, I have trained for two years to ride the Pan Mass Challenge on a tandem with my dad. As a result of our efforts over the past decade, this formerly orphan disease is much closer to a cure, helping many children and their families find hope for a better future. I believe that I am making a positive impact in the world by advocating for an orphaned disease and for the support of cancer research. Speaking at the Pan Mass Challenge Heavy Hitter’s dinner in May, I helped raise awareness for such a great organization and raise more money for the cause. Similarly, by working with our family’s foundation, A Kids Brain Tumor Cure, I have helped to raise money in order to find non-toxic cures for pediatric brain tumors, some of which are being by patients today. I want to share my story now because I believe that the sooner we raise awareness, the sooner we can find a cure. Additionally, in this point in my life, I am a 16 year old girl, just starting Junior year of high school, a place where my parents never thought I would get to. For me, to be able to stand here and tell my story, is amazing. I am far enough away from the experience to reflect upon its impact on my life but still young enough and close enough to the experience to be able to feel the long-lasting effects that cancer has had on my life and my future. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

School Project: How Clinical Psychology Can Help Treat PTSD in Children with Cancer

07:50
For my school project, I had to choose an area of psychology and relate it to a problem in a profession I am interested in, and therefore I chose to examine PTSD in children with cancer and how clinical psychology can be used to help. This is just a video for my psychology class but I wanted to share it in the hopes of raising awareness about childhood cancer and that these children need YOU to be a voice for them!

Home For The Last Time- A Little Boy's Fight with Brain Cancer

01:49
Going home.... It's one of the last wishes for a little boy with terminal cancer. And while the family of little AJ Fuller prepares to say goodbye- they are also counting their blessings. Including a very special friendship AJ made at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.Even though AJ is dealing with unbearable pain on the inside... He still is able to smile...  Doctors say AJ has about a week to live... And AJ along with the rest of the Fuller family decided to bring him homeWe were there as AJ left the hospital and finally was surrounded by the comfort of his own house. He may be leaving his best friend... But for AJ... There will be no more hospital beds.Ann Fuller says, "Watching his body decline while his mind kept going- I had to make some really hard hard decisions."AJ was diagnosed with brain cancer in September of 2007 ... In February of 2008 he was cancer free. But on July 3rd 2010 the cancer would come back Ann Fuller says, "There's so little awareness about childhood cancer- every school day 46 children are diagnosed - AJ was that twice - every school day 7 of those kids will die and AJ will be one of those 7 soon." From the outside AJ is very fragile- but on the inside you can tell there is an everyday 10 year old ... No one understands that better than his best friend Mark Kelly Mark Kelly says, "I have leukemia and that is really hard but with brain cancer one of the deadliest cancers I can't even believe he lived a month that's how strong he is."Ann Fuller says, "Having a common difficulty - they understand- where other kids can only sympathize."And while AJ's parents know the outcome... Fuller says, "If you try to plan for the future it gets overwhelming so so you have to take it as it comes and so you just pray every step of the way."They say while spending their last few days with AJ will be difficult... They stay focused on his destination ... Fuller says, "It is disheartening but at the same time when you look and you know there is a better place for him no more struggles - he will be free."And enjoying the time they have with him now...AJ spent this Halloween handing out candy in his costume... Although he did tell me if the kids looked too old - they couldn't have any...  Doctors believe AJ has one or two weeks to live... His mother tells me if he lives to November third he will be the longest living after his diagnosis. If you want to help the fuller family you can make donations.Go to any regions back and ask for the AJ Fuller fund.

The Nurture Room (Child Psychology Documentary) - Real Stories

01:29:35
Check out our new website for more incredible documentaries: HD and ad-free. https://goo.gl/LwMcmY Filmed over a period of one year, The Nurture Room accesses three schools (three of only five schools in the whole of the UK that agreed to participate in the film), and follows a handful of children as they go on their journey back to full participation in the classroom via the ‘nurture room’. This film provides an insight into the lives of troubled children within schools. The Nurture Room covers a new approach to helping children with Additional Support Needs in the form of social, emtional and/or behavioural needs which are acting as barriers to the children's learning. The Nurture Room is a place within the school where children can be given freedom to express themselves. The aim is to effectively address the children's needs and prevent exclusion from the classroom and any distress caused by them not having the coping skills, through no fault of their own. Primarily, these rooms hope to ensure that as few children as possible are excluded from school due to bad behaviour. By taking a proactive approach, these rooms within schools ‘nurture’ children to give them the best possible chance of coping within a mainstream classroom setting alongside their peers. She was diagnosed with an Medulloblastoma tumor on her brain stem. Shortly after that diagnosis, she was brought in for brain surgery. Her mom is thankful to be in the great hands of the neurologists at Nationwide Children's Hospital. "I was one of those people who always said things to other parents like, 'Oh, that's horrible...I'm so sorry...I wish I could do more for you.' But when it hits your own child, it sets you in a whole different perspective.” Lauren's hopes are similar to other girls her age: she hopes to be able to hang out and dance with her friends, go to school, and, oh yes, bring home a new puppy.

Milton High School: #GOGOLD for Childhood Cancer- Jacob's Cancer Story

03:42
On September 2, 2016, Milton High School (MHS) supported Childhood Cancer by raising money and awareness for two amazing organizations - CURE Childhood Cancer and Lighthouse Family Retreat. Our son, Jacob, who is 16 yrs old and a freshman at MHS was honored - along with other families that have been impacted by childhood cancer. During the pre-game show, this video which was produced by MHS shared Jacob's cancer journey on the jumbotron before the varsity football game. I hope this video continues to help society be educated on the need for more childhood cancer research and funding (the federal government only contributes 4% of its cancer research budget to child hood cancer). This needs to change. I'm proud of MHS and raising over $5,500 in its first fundraiser. Please #GOGOLD and help us make a difference so NO CHILD has to endure what Jacob (and our entire family) has due to cancer. Hope you enjoy this video! Thanks for supporting childhood cancer organizations! Sincerely, Heidi J. Moore - Proud Mother to Cancer Survivor Jacob A. Moore

Celebrating Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

02:51
Each morning parents everywhere struggle to get their little ones out the door. Many people in this community commute downtown and know the stress of trying to get to where they need to go. We all understand the struggle of making it to school drop offs and pickups, or the challenge of being able to eat dinner together as a family. But imagine that morning commute was not to work or school, it was to the hospital. For #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth at Southlake, we are celebrating our partnership with the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO) and SickKids. Some of our littlest cancer patients are leaving a mark from their journey – a journey with care provided close to home.
