Almost all cases of cervical cancer are caused by a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). Women of all ages are at risk of developing this cancer after they begin having sexual intercourse. Here are symptoms of cervical cancer: 1. Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding Most women diagnosed with cervical cancer experience irregular bleeding. An untimely bout of vaginal bleeding that occurs regularly could be an indicator of cervical cancer. It could also be due to other medical conditions, such as a hormonal imbalance, pelvic inflammatory disease or an infection in the pelvic organs. 2. Unusual Vaginal Discharge A little bit of clear, odorless vaginal discharge is normal. However, if vaginal discharge increases, smells foul or has an irregular appearance, it could be a sign of infection or cervical or endometrial cancer. When suffering from cervical cancer, vaginal discharge could be heavy, pale, watery, brown or mixed with blood. 3. Pain during Intercourse Painful intercourse is another important warning sign of cervical cancer. This symptom indicates advanced cervical cancer, which means the cancer has spread throughout tissues and reproductive organs. Apart from pain, you may also experience other symptoms, such as thick, foul-smelling vaginal discharge. There are other possible reasons for this particular problem, such as an infection or STD. 4. Pelvic Pain Pelvic pain is common among women. Cramping and aches are a normal part of the menstrual cycle and do not usually indicate the presence of cancer or any other serious condition. However, pain that lasts for longer periods of time and occurs more frequently could be a sign of cervical cancer. If suffering from cervical cancer, you may experience pelvic pain at unusual times, and the pain may start suddenly at any time during the month. In addition, such pain usually does not occur unless the cancer is in a very advanced stage. 5. Discomfort while Urinating Cervical cancer can also cause discomfort during urination. In fact, it is one of the most obvious and prevalent symptoms of this deadly disease. Urinary discomforts include burning, stinging or a tight sensation while urinating. Such symptoms occur when the cancer has spread to nearby tissue. This requires immediate attention to prevent further damage. It is one of the most common types of cancer in women worldwide, but also one of the most preventable, thanks to early detection with Pap tests. The cervix has 2 major cell types: flat squamous cells lining the outer part, and column-shaped glandular cells covering the inside of the cervical canal. Both types can become cancerous but squamous cell carcinomas are MUCH more common. Cancer usually starts in the zone where the two cell types meet, known as the transformation zone. Virtually all cervical cancers are caused by human papillomaviruses, or HPVs. There are over a hundred different types of HPV, some of which pose HIGHER risks than others. About 70% of all cases are caused by just TWO types: HPV-16 and HPV-18. Two proteins produced by HPV, known as E6 and E7, INTERFERE with cell functions that normally PREVENT EXCESSIVE cell division. This causes the cells to grow in an UNcontrolled manner. HPV is sexually transmitted and is VERY common, but in most women, HPV infections resolve on their own and do NOT cause cancers. Factors that may INcrease the risk of PERSISTENT HPV infections include WEAKENED immune system, other sexually transmitted diseases and smoking. Chances of developing cervical cancer also increase with having many children and LONG-term use of birth control pills. Early-stage cervical cancer generally produces NO symptoms. Advanced-stage disease may cause ABnormal or IRregular vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, or unusual vaginal discharge. EARLY detection is the key to prevent cervical cancer. Cervical cancer screening may include pap tests ALONE, or in combination with HPV DNA tests. In a pap test, cells are scraped from the cervix and examined for PRE-cancerous changes, known as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, or cervical DYSPLASIA. These morphological changes can range from mild to severe. If the results are ABnormal, the test is repeated again after 6 months or a year to MONITOR the condition. Additional diagnostic tests may also be performed. In most cases, MILD dysplasia resolves on its own and a follow-up pap test is all that is required to confirm. In a small number of cases, these ABnormal cells may develop into cancer, but they usually take YEARS to do so, which allows plenty of time for treatment when detected early. In the US, a pap test is recommended every 3 years, from the age of 21, or every 5 years if combined with an HPV test. Treatment options for cervical cancer include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of these. Early-stage cervical cancer is typically treated with surgical removal of the uterus. This option is the most effective in preventing cancer from coming back and is usually preferred when patients do NOT need to maintain fertility.

How to Recognize Cervical Cancer Symptoms. Cervical cancer is a cancer of the cervix (the lower part of the uterus). It can happen to women at any age, but it usually occurs in midlife in women between 20 and 50. The overwhelming majority of cases are found in women who do not receive routine medical care and regular pap screenings. Fortunately, cervical cancer is a very curable disease when it is found early and treated. The major symptoms you should look for are abnormal vaginal bleeding and pain. Symptoms usually do not begin until precancerous or abnormal cells have grown into an invasive cancer. So, call your doctor as soon as you notice the changes. 7 SIGNS OF CERVICAL CANCER THAT WOMEN NEED TO OBSERVE Please SUBSCRIBE : http://bit.ly/2e9Su11 Cervical cancer can be deadly for women. While the statistics about this cancer are alarming, cervical cancer can be prevented, and treated if caught early. In most cases, cervical cancer is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is highly transmittable. This virus is an STI (sexually transmitted infection) and it comes in more than 100 types, some of which can cause cervical cancer. An HPV infection might disappear on its own, but it could sometimes cause abnormal cell growth that may lead to cervical cancer. The signs for cervical cancer might not be as noticeable or apparent as the symptoms for breast cancer, but there are ways to observe them. =================================== cervical cancer, cancer, cervical, hpv, human papillomavirus, cervical cancer symptoms, signs of cervical cancer, symptoms of cervical cancer, cervical cancer vaccine, cervical cancer discharge, causes of cervical cancer, cervical cancer signs, stages of cervical cancer, cervical cancer causes. https://youtu.be/FpmULgJ1vmU Please SUBSCRIBE : http://bit.ly/2e9Su11

Learn more about the signs and symptoms of cervical cancer. Ursula Matulonis, MD, medical director of the Gynecologic Oncology Program at the Susan F. Smith Center for Women's Cancers at Dana-Farber, discusses the topic with radiation oncologist Larissa Lee, MD, and medical oncologist Alexi Wright, MD, MPH. This video is part of a live webchat on cervical cancer that originally aired Jan. 20, 2015. Watch the full webchat here: http://youtu.be/hR9duMSnCFA More information about the Susan F. Smith Center: www.susanfsmith.org. Transcription: Dr. Wright: So first of all, the vast majority of cervical cancers are early stage, and they’re often asymptomatic, which is why screening is so important. Sometimes it may harbor… it may signal that someone has cervical cancer are really pretty common: heavy vaginal bleeding, bleeding between periods, bleeding after intercourse, as well as kind of a watery purulent and sometimes stinky vaginal discharge. Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Dr. Matulonis: In terms of the presenting signs and symptoms… So, we talked about bleeding—abnormal bleeding. I think another symptom would be painful intercourse. And then just pain, just pelvic discomfort. Speaker 4: Yes. Dr. Matulonis: And it’s also important that cervical cancer is not a… it’s not thought as a ‘young woman’s disease,’ but it really can span the different decades. [inaudible 01:06], do you want to comment on that in terms of the patients who you see? Dr. Lee: That’s absolutely the case. We… Fortunately, not many women present with local advanced disease, but those are the women who tend to get treated with radiation and chemotherapy. The tumors can grow beyond the cervix, and that’s what can lead to pain. It can also cause a blockage of the ureter, which drains the kidney. That can lead to back pain, in addition to pelvic pain. Every once in awhile, a tumor is so advanced it will affect the bowel and the bladder function, which can be quite concerning, as well. So, patients may present with changes in their bowel habits, changes in their urinary function—or even blood in their bowels or in the urine. Speaker 6: Right, right.

In recent years, unfortunately, cancer of the cervix is considered one of the leading causes of death among women. Besides breast cancer, this disease is the second in line when it comes to how dangerous it is. Cancer of the cervix does not always show symptoms in the early stage of the disease, but regular testing (Papanicolaou test) can help you discover abnormal cells in the cervix that causes cancer. Also, doctors warned early signs and symptoms of this fatal disease in women should never be ignored. As we mentioned already, the early stages of the disease often do not show any kind of symptoms. But the first symptoms that indicate that the cancer has spread are the following: Pain in the legs During the early stage of the cancer development, a number of women suffer from swelling and leg pain. After the first stage, the cervix is swollen and can obstruct normal blood flow, leading to swelling and pain in the legs. Urinary problems Urine test can help you find if you have cancer of the cervix. If the cancer is diagnosed in this way, it means that the tumor is already at stage 4 and also that the abnormal tissue has spread to the bladder and affects its function. A very common symptom in women suffering from cervical cancer is tingling when urinating. It is important to know that urinary problems are not always a sign of urinary infection, so it is best to visit a specialist. Bleeding Bleeding that occurs between regular menstrual cycles should be examined in time in order to take appropriate measures. At the beginning in the first stage, cancer cells can be on the surface of the crvix, or deeper into the tissue. During the tumor development, menstrual cycles become more difficult, irregular and often followed by pain in the pelvis, waist or legs. Swelling of the lower extremities sometimes occurs in some patients. This is a sign that the tumor has evolved in the last stage. Then normal blood flow is interrupted because blood vessels are under pressure. Also cancer cells can spread to the bladder causing tingling or blood in the urine. Once the tumor expands you may often notice various symptoms, including anal pain and blood in the stool. Also, if the tumor extends onto the urethra or upper urinary tract, it can lead to hydronephrosis – swelling of the kidneys. www.induswomen.com Cervical Cancer - How To Prevent Cervical Cancer? What is Cervical Cancer? Cervical cancer is a cancer of the cervix or womb. The body of the womb is like a pouch which grows to accommodate your growing baby. The cervix connects the body of the uterus to the birth canal (Vagina). The part of the cervix that is close to the uterus is called the endocervix and the part next to the vagina is called the exocervix. The cervix is lined by 2 main types of cells called squamous cells (which are on the exocervix) and glandular cells (which are on the endocervix). The place where these two types of cells meet is called the transformation zone. How does cancer occur? Our body is built up of trillions of cells and each of these cells has a very tightly regulated system within their DNA which controls their growth, maturity, and division and death. When this DNA changes or damages, these cells turn to be rogue and abnormal and keeps growing uncontrollably by giving rise to cancers. Most of the cervical cancers start in the transformation zone itself. Cancers usually begin in the cells lining the cervix. The normal cells gradually develop precancerous changes which turn into cancer and these precancerous changes are known as squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL), cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), and dysplasia. These changes are detected by the Pap-smear test and treatment is started to prevent the further development of cervical cancer. Screening and Symptoms of Cervical Cancer Cervical cancer will have no symptoms in its early stages and that is the reason screening for cervical cancer can help in detecting the early cases and thus save thousands of lives. The cells of the cervix lining undergo several changes over the years. In very rare cases, these changed cells become cancerous. All women between the ages of 25 and 50 needs to be screened once in every three years and women between the ages of 50 and 65 should be screened for every five years to detect cervical cancer at early stages. During the process of screening, a very small sample of cells is taken out from the cervix and then checked under a microscope for any abnormalities. This test is commonly known as cervical smear-test. The most common early symptoms of cervical cancer include vaginal bleeding. This can happen during or after the sexual intercourse or after the menopause. Although this is quite abnormal, bleeding may not always mean having cervical cancer. Cervical Cancer Treatment Cervical cancer when diagnosed at an early stage, surgery can be a possible method of treating successfully. Sometimes only the cervix is removed and in most of the cases the complete womb is removed, this is called hysterectomy. Hysterectomy is usually suggested for women who have completed child birth or attained menopause. For women with early stage of cervical cancer, radiotherapy is an alternative to surgery. But for those with advanced cancer, need chemotherapy along with anticancer drugs and radiotherapy. Causes of Cervical Cancer Majority types of cervical cancers are caused due to human papillomavirus (HPV) which is a very common virus that spreads during sex. There are as many as 100 types of HPV, most of which are harmless. This may lead to an asymptomatic infection or genital warts. 2 distinct strains of the HPV viruses are known to be responsible for up to 70% of cervical cancers. They are HPV 16 & HPV 18. These HPV strains can obstruct the normal functioning of the cervix cells making them dysplastic and cancerous. Cervical Cancer Risk Factors The risk factors associated with cervical cancer may include the below: Heterosexual women who are sexually active. Women with multiple partners Women who have promiscuous male partners Women who are infected with human papilloma virus (HPV) predominantly types 16 & 18 Women who are smokers Lower social class women Those with impaired immunity with HIV. Women after organ transplantation How to Prevent Cervical Cancer? Cervical cancer can be prevented by anti-HPV vaccine. The vaccine used is Gardasil or Cervarix that protects against cervical cancer and genital warts. This vaccine is usually administered few years before a girl becomes active sexually. The recommended age to administer this vaccine is between 9 to 11 years. This vaccine protects against the 2 main strains of HPV that is responsible for more than 70% of cervical cancers in the world.

Dr. McDonald talks about some of the common symptoms of cervical cancer, such as abnormal bleeding. Watch the video to learn more. Matt McDonald, MD: A common question I am asked is what are the warning signs and symptoms of cervical cancer? And when thinking of cervical cancer, it's important to categorize that as precancer or precursor of a cancer called cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer. Cervical cancer in and of itself really the most common warning sign or symptom from that really is abnormal bleeding. Most importantly or what you'll read in a textbook is something called postcoital bleeding which is unforeseen or abnormal vaginal bleeding after sexual intercourse and that usually happens because the cervical cancerous cells are irritated during intercourse and they are friable and bleed easily when they are touched. So if a woman complains of abnormal bleeding after intercourse, they certainly should seek attention by their physician. Other warning signs that we see with cervical cancer are more indolent and insidious and what I mean by that is they really don't have any symptoms related to the GYN organs. At lot of times when we see patients come in with advanced cervical cancer, which is when we really don't want to catch patients, we have symptoms that really have to do with the kidneys not working or otherwise known as kidney failure that happens sometimes when the cervical cancer becomes so large that it will block the flow of urine from the kidney to the bladder and result in kidney failure and those patients come in with all kinds of symptoms of fatigue, nausea, etc., that really are symptoms related to the kidney failure not necessarily to the cervix. So our goal really is to catch women and find cervical cancer in its early stages. In the early stage symptoms usually have to do with this entity of postcoital bleeding. Alarmingly, though a lot of patients when they develop early cervical cancer like stage 1 and stage 2 have no symptoms not even the abnormal bleeding and so what we really try to do is catch cervical cancer before it exist and that is where we go from a screening standpoint in hopes of preventing cervical cancer and the most effective means of preventing cervical cancer is the Pap smear, and that requires regular visits to the gynecologist or your family practitioner, etc. That's the most effective means of preventing cervical cancer. Without Pap smears, we have no idea where our patent is in the continuum of cervical dysplasia and that's why in certain developing countries where Pap smear surveillance is not a regular part of a woman's life, cervical cancers still the leading cause of cancer related deaths in some women. In countries such as the United States, where cervical cancer screening with Pap smears is a regular event, we have done an enormous job at preventing cervical cancers. So that is the far the best most effective screening mechanisms, regular exams, and Pap smears. Learn more about Dr. McDonald: http://presbyteriangyncancer.org/?id=5013&sid=123

7 Cervical Cancer Symptoms You Should Absolutely Never Ignore The stirrups... the speculum... the jelly that your gyno never seems to get totally cleaned up. Yeah, Paps are a (somewhat literal) pain, but cervical cancer was once the number-one leading cause of cancer death in American, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Now, thanks to Paps, which can ID issues before they become cancerous, it doesn't even crack the top 10. Still, the American Cancer Society estimates that 13,240 new cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed in 2018—31 percent of which will be fatal. And the CDC reports that six out of every 10 cervical cancers occur in women who have never received a Pap test or have not been tested in the past five years. (FYI, all women between the ages of 21 and 65 years old should be getting a Pap smear every three years from 21 to 30, and every five years from 30 to 65, according to the CDC.) “In fact, one of the biggest risk factors of getting cervical cancer is not having had a Pap smear within the past five years," says Eloise Chapman-Davis, M.D., a gynecological oncologist at Weill Cornell Medicine and New York-Presbyterian. However, she notes that you shouldn’t just rely on a Pap to flag any issues. It's also important to watch out for cervical cancer symptoms, which can develop in cases of more developed cancer growths. Translation: If you spot any symptoms of cervical cancer, it's worth talking to your gyno and getting checked out asap. 1. Totally Not-Normal Vaginal Bleeding “One of the most common symptoms of cervical cancer is vaginal bleeding, whether it’s in between your periods, after sex, or after menopause,” says Taraneh Shirazian, M.D., a gynecologist at NYU Langone Health. Abnormal vaginal bleeding is generally a symptom of advanced cervical cancer, because it means that a tumor on the cervix is spreading to affect nearby tissue, Chapman-Davis adds. Call your gyno asap. 2. Periods That Are Heavy AF This isn’t about your period lasting a day longer or suddenly seeming a bit darker. “Rather, it’s your period all of sudden lasting two weeks instead of four days, or having two periods in one month,” says Shirazian. But to play it safe, it you have any changes in your cycle that last for at least two cycles (heavier, lighter, whatever!), it's worth talking to your gynecologist, she says. 3. WTF-Worthy Vaginal Discharge Discharge is totally normal, but the type of discharge you experience could be an indicator of a number of different vaginal health issues. “With cervical cancer, you might notice a discharge that’s foul-smelling and pink, brown, or bloody, potentially with chunks of tissue, or what we call necrotic material,” says Shirazian. And because “masses and tumors secrete fluid, that could contribute to a continuous, watery discharge that seems to occur for no reason,” says Chapman-Davis. Go ahead and give your gyno a call. 4. Pelvic, Back, or Leg Pain Pelvic pain could be an indicator of changes to the cervix, but advanced cervical cancer can even spread to the bladder, intestines, or even the lungs and liver, says Chapman-Davis. “Then you might have things like back pain or leg pain,” she says. “But that’s typically associated with very advanced cases because the cervix isn’t really affecting a lot of nerves.” Talk to your primary care doc to rule out cervical cancer as well as other potential nerve causes. 5. Major Fatigue Because most cervical cancer symptoms don’t come along until it enters more advanced stages, it does share some symptoms with all cancers.
