How to Care for an Elderly Cat | Cat Care

The first of those is to make sure that your cat goes to the veterinarian more frequently. Many veterinarians recommend that cats come in at least every 6 months once they hit the age 7. And this is because there are important diseases that happen with age, that start to happen around that age, that can be dealt with sooner rather than later, in order to prevent an early demise. Things like hyperthyroidism, or elevated thyroid levels, kidney problems, and even some types of cancer can be caught early, and when caught early we have a better chance of a good quality of life for a longer time. If you have an elderly cat at home, major things that you want to watch for are: increased or decreased urinary output, that means fewer times in the litter box or many, many more times, or more amount of urine in the litter box; changes in the defecation frequency; or if your cat is having troubles going to the bathroom. For instances, if your cat goes into the box to go to the bathroom and seems like he's straining or uncomfortable, that's something that can definitely happen with age and can be treated by your veterinarian. If you find that your cat isn't grooming as well, or is hiding more, or is having trouble eating, these are all things that you'll need to address with your veterinarian as well. Overall though, to keep your cat healthy at home as a senior citizen, you want to make sure that you're still providing active play every day, as well as environmental enrichment in puzzle toys. You also want to make sure that your cat has plenty of easily accessible elevated areas. Remember, your cat might not be able to jump as high as before if he's not feeling very comfortable. In addition, you're going to want to make sure that you provide lots of loving attention and plenty of fresh water. Keeping your cat hydrated is one of the biggest keys to keeping your cat healthy. And those are some ways to manage an elderly cat at home.

Abandoned at 17 - new beginning for an elderly cat
Update: Cinnamon died a year and a half after her rescue in her forever home. She survived against all prognosis and was the charity's most beloved cat. Abandoned at 17, after losing everything and being abused and mistreated, Cinnamon came to us angry, confused and full of hatred. And while we thought that her days were counted, she didn't just survive, against all odd, she thrived. I am a dog person - you might have figured it out already, but what I shared with her can not be out into words, so I won't even try. I have been been filming her since the days she was rescued by SCARS. For months I thought it would just be a sad requiem - she didn't really seem to be making any progress, at least not towards humans, and imagining her dying angry, confused and among people she hated was juts too sad. We thought we had given her a "home" to spend her final days, and for months we believed that this was all we could do. But Cinnamon wanted more from life, and she got it. She is too old, and too fragile to be put for adoption, so this will be her home, for the time she has left. Beside, home is where the heart is, and her heart is finally with us, even if it took her six months to surrender. FeLV: My experience with Feline Leukemia (UPDATE)
UPDATE: Great news! I didn't see the point in making another video to announce this, so yeah. I just recently had both my cats tested for FeLV and the results were NEGATIVE! I will need to continue having the one cat who was exposed retested for the next few years, of course. Thank you all for your comments. :) I'm glad that my video helped some folks out there. --- FeLV (Feline Leukemia) is a terrible virus that is very contagious and fatal. Please make sure your cats are vaccinated for FeLV and checked for FeLV if they have not been checked before. In this video, I describe my personal experience with this virus - how it affected my cat and what his last days were like. During this hard time I found it especially beneficial to talk with others who had gone through this themselves, so I hope that this video will be helpful to somebody out there who may be dealing with FeLV.

Owner discusses cat's cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery
Pistache is an 18-year-old female spayed domestic shorthair cat belonging to Sylvie Bermingham. Pistache was diagnosed with an inoperable oral squamous cell carcinoma (aggressive oral cancer) in late May of 2008. She had a large tumor between her mandibles (lower jaw) and also had metastatic disease in the draining lymph nodes (somewhat unusual for oral squamous cell carcinoma). Pistache's tumor responded wonderfully to an alternating protocol combining mitoxantrone and carboplatin, two chemotherapy agents that are frequently used in cats. She ate better, gained weight, and is still doing well a year after diagnosis. This condition normally has a 1 to 3 month prognosis for survival when inoperable. What is Feline Leukemia Virus?
Feline Leukemia Virus or FeLV is a contagious retrovirus that affects cats. FeLV can cause a decline in health. Many shelters automatically euthanize cats that test positive for FeLV. At HSSA, we are taking a progressive stance and keep FeLV cats separate from negative cats until they find their forever homes. Share this video with your friends to spread the knowledge about FeLV and check back for more informational videos in our education series!

Oscar, the Nursing Home Cat Who Can Sense Death Coming
Meet Oscar, a cat with a supernatural ability to feel when people are about to die. In over 50 documented cases, Oscar, who lives in a nursing home , has curled up beside patients in their final hours, seeing them through to the ‘other side’. His unique story was revealed by Dr. David Dosa, a geriatrician and assistant professor at Brown University, who claims Oscar’s predictions have rarely been wrong in the past six years. In fact, he has even proved medical staff wrong at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rhode Island, where he was adopted seven years ago as a kitten. Dr. Dosa first told the world about Oscar’s rare gift in an article in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2007. Since then, the cat has accurately sensed even more deaths, convincing the geriatrician that it wasn’t just a series of coincidences. Dr. Dosa eventually wrote a book about his experiences with Oscar at the nursing home. It’s called ‘Making rounds with Oscar: The extraordinary gift of an ordinary cat’. The book describes Oscar’s daily routine, how he spends his time pacing from room to room at the nursing home, rarely spending time with patients who have still got a fighting chance of survival. Instead, he picks out certain patients and cuddles up next to them . These are often the ones who will pass away in a short time. If kept outside the room of a dying patient, he will scratch at the door, trying to get in. In one instance, Oscar visited a woman who had a very severe blood clot in her leg, wrapping himself around her cold limb and staying by her side until she passed away. Another time, when the staff believed that Oscar was done with his rounds, he actually returned a few hours later to lay with one particular patient until he died. In order to test his paranormal gift, the nurses at the nursing home tried placing Oscar on the bed of a patient they thought might be close to death. But the cat simply ‘charged out’ and went to sit with another patient. His judgement turned out to be correct – the second patient died the same evening, while the first one lived on for two more days. In his book, Dr. Dosa doesn’t offer any scientific explanations for the cat’s abilities, but he does suggest that Oscar – like dogs that are reportedly able to smell cancer – might be able to smell ketones, which are distinctly odored biochemicals given off by dying cells. Dr. Jill Goldman, a certified animal behaviorist in California, has a different theory – that Oscar’s predictions might be a learned behavior. “There has been ample opportunity for him to make an association between ‘that’ smell and death.” And according to animal behaviorist Dr. Daniel Estep, Oscar may only be recognizing the patients’ lack of movement and interpreting it as illness, as cats can often sense when their owners are sick. Irrespective of the reason, patients and their families at the nursing home find comfort in Oscar’s presence, in the idea that the animal was there and might be there when their loved ones eventually pass. The staff have grown so confident of Oscar’s ESP that they now inform family members when he snuggles up with one of the patients. “It’s not like he dawdles,” Dr. Dosa wrote. “He’ll slip out for two minutes, grab some kibble and then he’s back at the patient’s side. It’s like he’s literally on a vigil.” And although the nursing home keeps five other cats, none of the others have exhibited similar behavior. Sources: Telegraph.co.uk, Who Forted

It all Started when my 13 years old white Maltese (Bilu) collapse on the flour and couldn't breathe. I picked up his lifeless little body as fast as I could, his tongues was blue and had curled all the way into his throat and he couldn't breathe. I yelled his name in a panic sound, and began to gently pull his tongue out not allowing it to block his airway. although this horrible scene only lasted about 40 seconds it seemed like an eternity. At first we thought he had chocked on a chicken bone or something (since I found a bone near by). But this fiasco happened again. We rush him to the vet, lo and behold they had an X ray done and found out he had a cancer tumor larger then his heart located around the heart and lungs. The tumor was so big the vet said all his organs were failing and that he would not be able to breathe. The vet told us that the loving thing to do was to put him to sleep. We came home devastated that day, everyone were crying (specially because we lost Sandy our loving yorkie about six months ago for the very same problem lungs cancer). We seriously contemplated putting him to sleep, specially because he fainted again. But something in me wouldn't give up hope. I began praying for healing and asking God for a solution. That's when a documentary I watched a few years ago came to my mind "THE GERSON MIRACLE" also "HEALING CANCER FROM THE INSIDE OUT"... So I immediately got Bilu off his nasty Walmart food (Purina) which in my opinion was responsible for giving him cancer. I began cooking organic chicken breast and organic brown rice and vegetables. besides I began juicing organic carrots, celery, kale, broccoli, mint and injecting in his mouth via syringe every 4-5 hours... Also I began giving him omega oils 3-9. I began feeding him multi vitamin and I forgot to share on the video. I began giving him organic apple-cider vinegar raw, besides lemon water to make his body alkaline. Also I am giving him Kombucha. Less than 3 weeks Bilu has appeared to have been fully healed, all the symptoms left. He is happy, he eats twice a day, he has been chasing cats around the backyard. This is amazing because Bilu was not able to walk but now he is fully healed from cancer. Bilu has not fainted or shown any signs of sickness.... all my praises goes to my wonderful heavenly father above Jesus Christ, who created us in His image and gave us everything we need to stay healthy (fruits and vegetables). I am compelled to share this video because I know so many people this very moment (As I write) are devastated to know that their wonderful pet friend has cancer. If this is you my friend, DO NOT GIVE UP, BILU HAS BEEN HEALED FROM CANCER, BELIEVE ME WHEN I TELL YOU!!! IF BILU WAS HEALED YOUR DOG CAN BE HEALED AS WELL... PLEASE IF you have any questions, don'y hesitate to contact me. my direct email is mq4bibletruth@yahoo.com PLEASE FOR THE SAKE OF THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE THAT ARE HURTING BECAUSE OF THEIR PETS, PLEASE FORWARD THIS VIDEO TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS.... ALSO, THIS TREATMENT WORKS ALSO FOR HUMAN BEINGS... PLEASE SHARE WITH EVERYONE YOU KNOW.... IF YOU HAVE A FRIEND THAT HAS CANCER RESEARCH "GERSON MIRACLE.... ALSO WWW.MODERNMANNA.ORG THESE TREATMENTS WORK VERY WELL FOR CANCER PATIENTS AS WELL AS ANIMALS... I REALLY HOPE AND PRAY THAT MY EFFORTS WILL HELP AT LEAST ONE PERSON OUT THERE... PLEASE REMEMBER TO SHARE YOUR SUCCESS STORY WITH ME... MAY GOD BLESS YOU MARDOQUEU SILVA

Awful Vet My Cats Final moments. Namine ♥
WARNING: At the end of the video contains a scene of a dead cat. I am very mad at the vet for not giving my girl a sedative before the final ejection. I did not understand at the time and trusted my vet. Her death is hard enough, but knowing she could of gone peacefully is something I have yet to get over. I've been doing some reading though that states giving cats with breathing problems a sedative can cause them to choke or hyperventilate, but even so this breaks my heart not being sure. Namine had advanced cancer that spread to her lungs causing her heart and other organs to fail. Her tummy may look chubby, but that is the tumor. Unfortunately we did not find out until it was too late. I'am truly sorry for anyone who has to experience putting their pet down or any other death. I wish they could live forever. Namine was my best friend for more than half my life. I love her and I know she loves me. I never imagined life without her. This was the hardest decision of my life. The videos of me holding and embracing Namine was done off camera. This was the last moment of the vet getting everything ready. I thought the procedure was going to be done in that room. The person recording is my brother. We embraced her soo much off camera giving her her final hugs and kisses before this. This happened around midnight 5/4/17. The doctor was an on call emergency vet. I did not realize they didn't sedate her until I posted this video. I really wish they had before sticking the needle in her. I miss you Namine and hope to see you again.

Ep 10 - Cat Health: How To Brush Your Cat's Teeth
**Apologies, but due to my current schedule, I am unable to personally reply to comments.** Today we focus on home dental care and teach you how to brush your cat's teeth. This episode is the second part of a three part dental series. Dental disease is the number one feline health problem seen by veterinarians and is the largest single cause of health problems in cats. At home dental care is often overlooked by pet owners until dental issues have already begun to surface. By the time many pet owners realize the need for at home dental care and brushing teeth, their pets have already developed gingivitis, tooth decay, lesions and other oral problems and in some cases, these problems have led to more serious issues with their internal organs such as their kidneys, livers and hearts. In today's episode, Arloa learns how to brush her cat's teeth from Dali, a certified veterinary dental technician from Houndstooth. In addition to demonstrating how to brush teeth, they demonstrate different methods of holding the cat to keep them comfortable while giving the person access to their mouth. They also discuss different devices that can be used to brush a cat's teeth such as a pet toothbrush, an oral swab (aka sponge on a stick) or a thin cloth; and they talk about whether or not a solution (such as pet specific toothpaste) is necessary. When a solution is preferred or needed, Dali explains the use of a diluted hydrogen peroxide mix and why that mix is preferable over using toothpaste. Once Dali has demonstrated step by step how to brush your cat's teeth, Arloa then tries it with her cat. In next week's episode, Arloa and Dali will discuss professional dental cleanings, what to look for in professional dental hygienists and dental veterinarians and the differences in anesthetic dental cleanings vs. non-anesthetic dental cleanings. Living With Tigers: Family Share Home With Pet Tigers
Living With Tigers: Family Share Home With Pet Tigers SUBSCRIBE: http://bit.ly/Oc61Hj A BRAZILIAN family have taken the trend for exotic pets to new extremes. Not content with the standard pooch or moggy, the Borges brood have been sharing their home with a pack of SEVEN tigers. Aryas Borges, began his love affair with tigers when he found two of the big cats living in a bad state at a circus -- and decided to bring them home. His daughters Nayara, 20, Uyara, 23, and Deusanira, 24, grew up sharing their meals, beds and playtime with the fully-grown predators and walking them on a leash. And Nayara, a real-life female Tarzan, regularly hops into the family swimming pool to take a dip with her furry friends. After his success with the rescue tigers, Ary started breeding them, and the tigers still have the run of the house at the Borges family home in Maringa. The family have forged an incredible bond with the tigers after living under the same roof for so long. My Parents Couldn't Take Care Of Me Anymore
By Cassie | Ready to "wear it out loud?” Merch store open, SHOP NOW: http://bit.ly/storybooth-merch | Subscribe: http://bit.ly/sub2storybooth | Record your story @ https://storybooth.com or our iPhone app for a chance to get animated. Comment, like, share this story. Cassie's family was poor, but despite having financial problems they always managed to find love and some happiness together - at least when she was younger. But that didn't mean it wasn't hard on her growing up, on all of them really. It was a tough childhood with her dad having to go wherever he could find work, and her Mom and her being alone most of the time. Her Mom was always super protective of her, Cassie being an only child, and she was almost like a single mother because Cassie's Dad was hardly ever home, and all of that pressure and stress really put a strain on her Mom's mind. Without any funds for medical treatment, for when Cassie got sick, or for her Mom's mental health with all that financial stress and pressure, and loneliness, everything got worse. But despite all of that, with the love she knew was there at home no matter what the circumstances were, Cassie managed to stay happy as she was growing up, and, working hard, she was able to do really well at school. Focusing on her studies actually helped her get through some of the tough times at home - something to focus on and distract her from the stress and pressure her Mom and Dad were under. But finally, when Cassie was 13 years old, her Dad got a big break! A good paying job that he was perfect for and things started to turn around for them, started actually going well. All of a sudden they didn't have to struggle to afford the basic necessities, and they could even afford things that felt like real luxuries - like having their own car. Unfortunately, that good luck didn't last long. Her Dad's new boss turned out to be a con man and a crook. Cassie's Dad ended up losing the car, and all the money he had made for the family, leaving the whole family with very little hope. They were left almost penniless and her Dad had to get back on the road looking for hard labor for even less pay. All those bills and her Dad traveling for work took a tough toll on her Mother, in fact, the stress and mental pressure it all caused led to a moment that would change Cassie's life forever. Her Mother's mental illness and her challenges with depression worsened into severe paranoia and bipolar disorder, and those conditions led to a tragic event that left her Mother unable to take care of Cassie anymore. With her Mother needing care, and her Father still required to be away for work, Cassie felt like she was left without a family, and with nobody to take care of her. She felt alone and hopeless - at such a young age Cassie felt like she couldn't go on. With nothing left to do she finally reached out for help and called her Aunt and Uncle and they were so kind and generous and agreed to take Cassie in as her guardians. She joined their family - her Aunt and Uncle and her two cousins. Now Cassie is seventeen years old, in her final year at high school. And, it has been hard for her to adjust to a new lifestyle with her Aunt and Uncle and cousins - a life where money and finances aren't a problem, and painful when she thinks about her parents are still struggling to stay healthy and make ends meet. But working hard on school, and keeping her studies a priority, while still thinking of what happened in the past, keeps her motivated and driven to work as hard as she can so that one day she could potentially provide for her parents in ways that they hadn't been able to, despite all of their love and hard work. She plans to ensure this does not have one of those tragic endings. She thought, "My parents love me and someday I will help them out of their bad situation with my love. We will be a family again. Just because my parents couldn't take care of me anymore, does not mean they don't love me." - - - We love this true story. What's your story? storybooth wants to hear it!
