ISRO will Share lithium-ion battery technology to private companies
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has given India many reasons to feel proud. Its achievements have established the country as a forerunner in the field of space, along with pioneers like NASA, European space agency, Russian space agency Roscosmos, Japanese space agency JAXA and China National Space Administration. The Indian government has asked ISRO to allow manufacturers interested in producing indigenous lithium-ion batteries, including those from private sector, to obtain the technology for its mass production. ISRO will now come up with a framework to make this process smooth. The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre under ISRO has developed indigenous technology to manufacture such high-power batteries for automobiles and e-vehicles and their feasibility tests in vehicles have been successful. Over half a dozen major automobile companies, battery manufacturers and public sector undertakings have already approached ISRO. Mahindra Renault, Hyundai, Nissan, Tata Motors, High Energy Batteries, BHEL and Indian Oil have shown interest in producing the indigenous lithium-ion batteries. Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari had sought ISRO's help to develop indigenous technology for lithium-ion batteries so that their prices are within the reach of Indian customers. ISRO had earlier developed similar batteries for Mangalyaan, satellites and the launch vehicle applications. The Indian government has set an ambitious target for pushing more use of electric vehicles to reduce air pollution, which has become one of the biggest health concerns. Batteries are the key component of any electric vehicle. At present, all lithium-ion batteries are imported from foreign countries and it's very expensive. The lithium-ion batteries have high-power, but these weigh less and their volume is much less as comparison to conventional batteries.

And so when a cell phone, laptop, or car battery explodes it can rightfully be a cause for concern. However, there’s a lot that goes into the creation of any single lithium ion cell and even a small error at a given point in that process could lead to big problems during the battery’s life cycle. Greg Less, Michigan Engineering’s Battery User Facility’s Manager discusses not only why and how the lithium ion batteries that we all use so frequently might explode, but how researchers at the University of Michigan are trying to change the way batteries are made for a safer and more efficient future. ABOUT THE PROFESSOR Greg Less is the Senior Laboratory Manager at the UMEI Battery Fabrication and Characterization User Facility, responsible for the day-to-day operation of the laboratory. But we will need even better battery technology in order to power the innovations of the future! There are many researchers around the world developing cutting-edge battery technology, and the technology I am most excited about is Solid State Battery Technology. Research for Solid State Battery Technology has exploded recently and there is a global race to develop and commercialize it. Will Lithium Shortage Kill The EV Industry?
First I thought we should talk about where you can find lithium today. The truth is it’s likely on your body right now, you may be holding it in your hand, or you’re looking directly at it. Lithium itself is a soft, silvery-white alkali metal. It is the lightest metal and the lightest solid element. Like all alkali metals, lithium is highly reactive and flammable. So this isn’t something you’d want just laying around your house. Especially if you have a toddler running around like I do... So Lithium is a metal so it must be mined right, like copper? Well, not exactly. It’s true lithium can be mined from rocks but mostly it’s found in brine pools. Lithium is also present in seawater but there aren’t any commercially viable methods of extracting it at this time As an aside when you see a meme floating around the internet showing a giant mine where lithium comes from, it’s a lie. As of 2017, most of the world's lithium production is in South America, where lithium-containing brine is extracted from underground pools and concentrated by solar evaporation. The standard extraction technique is to evaporate water from brine. Each batch takes from 18 to 24 months. With so much demand for lithium it’s a fair question to ask... Are Tesla and others doomed? Well…not really The US Geological Survey’s report for 2017 shows that "Worldwide lithium production increased by an estimated 12% in 2016 in response to increased lithium demand for battery applications. Production in Argentina increased nearly 60%, primarily owing to a new brine operation; the leading Argentine producer also increased production. A producer in Chile reported that its production rose by 20%. Two small Australian spodumene operations, one new and one inactive since 2013, planned to begin commercial concentrate production by year end. Worldwide lithium production capacity was reported to be 49,400 tons in 2015; capacity utilization was estimated to be 64% in 2015 and 71% in 2016. Based on average projections by producers and industry analysists of about 14% growth worldwide, consumption of lithium in 2016 is projected to be about 37,800 tons, up from 33,300 tons in 2015. So the trend is going up, but when you look at the overall picture you find that owing to continuing exploration, lithium resources have increased substantially worldwide. Identified lithium resources in the United States, from continental brines, geothermal brines, hectorite, oil field brines, and pegmatites, have been revised to 6.9 million tons. Identified lithium resources in other countries have been revised to approximately 40 million tons. Identified lithium resources in Argentina and Bolivia are about 9 million tons each and in major producing countries are Australia, more than 2 million tons; Chile, more than 7.5 million tons; and China, approximately 7 million tons. Canada’s lithium resources are about 2 million tons. Congo (Kinshasa), Russia, and Serbia have resources of about 1 million tons each. Lithium resources in Brazil and Mexico are approximately 200,000 tons each and Austria, and Zimbabwe have more than 100,000 tons each. Beyond just producing more lithium, companies like Tesla have focused on creating a closed-loop battery recycling program since as early as 2011. So while Tesla drivetrains are rated to go 1M miles, and the batteries will likely last to last north of 350K miles, once the cars do get turned in, Tesla isn’t going to just throw away those precious metals. If you’re an investor in companies reliant on lithium for their batteries such as Tesla, Apple, Google, or any other company making electronics today, you shouldn’t worry about the supply chain. The Japanese company has just presented a battery for electric cars that in only 6 minutes of loading offers 320 kilometers of use. The new generation of Toshiba car batteries, based on Ion-Lithium, is focused on changing one of the most well-known drawbacks of electric cars, charging times. Although companies like Tesla have managed to improve the speed of charge of their batteries, it still takes about an hour to have most of the battery charged. Depending on the type of electric car or even the type of battery that is selected, these vehicles could take several hours to charge. The new Toshiba battery offers high energy density and reduced charge time due to the use of titanium oxide doped with niobium. This element is also used in solar panels or even in superconducting images, such as those used in particle accelerators. After 5,000 charge / discharge cycles it maintains 90% of its original capacity. The battery is not yet in production, has been tested a prototype with a capacity of 50Ah, hence has extrapolated the results to what may be the future of this technology charging. Perhaps one of the most important details for the future of this battery is that after 5,000 charge / discharge cycles, it maintains 90% of its original capacity. This will result in an electric car would not have to change battery after a few years of use, even end up with rental programs. Toshiba hopes to start mass-producing this battery in 2019. This video is just to show the rejuvenate trick. 1- The waste from this project went to the local recycling center. 2- I am wearing glasses in this video but most of the time I also have an extra set of goggles on ( that,s why I asked where are my glasses in one part of the video ) 3- It is better to purchase a new battery. Honda aims to establish electric car battery plant in India
Japanese multinational Honda Motor Co. Ltd intends to set-up a lithium ion battery manufacturing unit in India. It attempts to profit from the proliferating and potentially lucrative electric vehicle (EV) opportunity in the country. The Indian subsidiary of Honda Japan is in the process of devising an EV strategy in line with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government's mission to switch to all-electric cars by 2030. The idea is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as part of the global agreement on climate change. Next in action will be to identify the type of electric vehicles the company would want to make locally. Honda aims to comprise 65% of the company's overall sales with electric cars by 2030. Presently, the Indian unit is Honda's fourth largest after those in the US, China and Japan, with regard to total vehicle sales. Mahindra Electric is set to revolutionize the first and last mile connectivity option with their two new products. The company launched their new Treo electric auto which has been designed and developed in the Bangalore facility. It is the first electric auto to be powered by a lithium-ion battery.
