Nurse Serenades Patient with Special Song || ViralHog

06:04
Occurred on October 25, 2017 / Nashville, Tennessee, USA "My best friend Margaret was in the hospital at Vanderbilt Hospital. She was being tested to see if she was strong enough to get a liver transplant due to cancer in her liver. She was having a test ran and I couldn’t be there because my 5-year-old daughter was having surgery at Vanderbilt children’s. Margaret had a reaction to her rest, so Olivia, her nurse, stayed with her while I was taking care of my daughter. When I returned to Vanderbilt to be with Margaret, she told me about an angel that was taking care of her. That angel was Ms. Olivia and she sang the song to Margaret over and over. She learned it just for Ms. Margaret. I videoed Ms. Olivia singing it to Margaret. I was crying the whole time she was singing it. Ms. Margaret found out she was too sick to get the transplant. The doctors then gave Ms. Margaret just days to live. She passed 9 days later. It was a beautiful moment when I videoed Ms. Olivia singing that to Ms.Margaret. It was just so touching and a beautiful thing to witness a nurse taking care of her patients in that manner. I was friends with Ms. Margaret for 17 years." Carolyn’s Ovarian Cancer Story | Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

02:28
Carolyn was diagnosed with recurrent ovarian cancer. She describes her care and recovery at Dana-Farber, and how that experience has inspired her to become an oncology nurse. Learn more about how the Susan F. Smith Center for Women’s Cancers at Dana-Farber treats patients like Carolyn who have ovarian cancer or other gynecologic cancers: http://www.dana-farber.org/Adult-Care/Treatment-and-Support/Treatment-Centers-and-Clinical-Services/Gynecological-Cancer-Treatment-Center.aspx Transcription: Carolyn: My name is Carolyn. I grew up in Boston all my life, and I am a huge Red Sox fan and Patriots fan. In January of 2012, I began nursing school in Nashville, Tennessee. Text: Something didn’t feel right. Carolyn: I began experiencing symptoms of what I thought were a urinary tract infection and was told I needed to go for a CT scan. I came back and received a call from my primary telling me that neither she nor the radiologist were really… They were unsure of what they were looking at. There were masses throughout my abdomen. A couple of days later, after a biopsy, I was told that I had stage 4 ovarian cancer. I met my team from Dana-Farber who ultimately performed the surgery, and then I went on to have six rounds of chemotherapy. I spent the next year or so really recovering from chemotherapy and really just tried to put my life back together and go on living normally. I was getting ready to start school in September 2014 when I started experiencing symptoms that just didn’t feel right. I found there was, in fact, a mass on my colon. It was really discouraging to find out that my cancer was back, but I was also really confident in the care that I was receiving. My doctors had always been up front with me that a recurrence was a possibility. Text: Carolyn was offered a clinical trial for women with recurrent ovarian cancer. Carolyn: I was able to take part in using this ACE-inhibitor, which is traditionally for breast cancer patients, but they had found a link between this working for breast cancer and ovarian cancer. So, I am benefitting from the very research that Dana-Farber does here. Dana-Farber is really like a second home to me. It’s weird to say that I look forward to coming here, but I really do. I can’t say enough about the doctors and the nurses that have cared for me. They’re just wonderful people, and I consider them sort of family now. When I was in nursing school, I used to think I knew what kind of nurse I wanted to be, and after being here at Dana-Farber and seeing the care that I’ve received, I really know what a good nurse is now. My hope is to become an oncology nurse. I would really like to work in the field that I’ve been so immersed in for the last three years.

News Story About Hyperthermia Cancer Treatment with MRI

01:44
Hyperthermia therapy is a treatment used in battling cancer by heating tumors. The Heating is about as warm as a hot tub. Research has shown that heat can damage or kill cancer cells in some tumors while also making radiation and chemotherapy more effective. While it has been known for hundreds of years that fevers can kill cancer, only recently has technology been developed that can control and focus heat specifically on tumors. Local hyperthermia treatment (heat applied to a very small area, such as a tumor) is a well-established cancer treatment. Primary malignant tumors have a bad blood circulation, which make them more sensitive to changes in temperature. "Our own clinical experience and the results of numerous published studies are highly encouraging in that increased use of hyperthermia will improve the quality of life for cancer patients and improve control of cancer recurrences." Dr. Gerald Sokol, New Hope Cancer Center, Hudson, FL. "Hyperthermia is offering our patients new hope. We are often seeing faster responses, better cancer control, and fewer side effects." Dr. Leland Rogers, GammaWest, Salt Lake City, Utah "Hyperthermia gives us a method to treat people when there are few other alternatives. It's an additional form of treatment that can be done in difficult cases, usually without serious side effects or complications." Dr. Steven Stroup, Centennial Hospital, Nashville, Tenn. "When the tumor is of larger size, it is unresectable surgically. Also, radiation has less effect on the center part of the tumor, which is deprived of the oxygen blood supply and the nutrients. By increasing the temperature of the tissues from 42-44 degrees centigrade, (hyperthermia) increases the circulation, increases the oxygenation, so that the radiation is more effective." TN Secretary of State Says 4 Cancer Charities%

00:31
A lawsuit has been filed against four Tennessee non-profits, alleging they scammed more than $187 million. Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett made the announcement Tuesday, filed against Cancer Fund of America, Childrenƒ’‚ƒ€š‚‚ƒ€š‚„s Cancer Fund of America, Cancer Support Services and The Breast Cancer Society. The lawsuit claims the non-profits portrayed themselves to donors as legitimate charities. The federal lawsuit claims the non-profits used 85% or more of ever donation to pay themselves, their family or their friends. 'ƒ€š‚‚ƒ€š‚“Sometimes they would even use it to fund lavish trips to Disney World instead of supporting patients they claim to help,'ƒ€š‚‚ƒ€š‚ said Hargett. Telemarketers, according to the lawsuit, often told donors that their contributions would be used to provide pain medication to children suffering from cancer, transport cancer patients to chemotherapy appointments, and pay for hospice care for cancer patients. However, the lawsuit claims the defendants did not operate programs that provided these services. You can watch Secretary Hargett's message here. Read tips from the Better Business Bureau on avoiding falling victim to a cancer charity scam here.

Nashville actors, musicians and athletes gather to raise money for cancer research

04:34
(28 Feb 2017) NASHVILLE ACTORS, MUSICIANS AND ATHLETES GATHER TO RAISE MONEY FOR CANCER RESEARCH Some of Nashville's biggest celebrities have been touched by cancer or know someone who has, which is why they are helping to raise money for cancer research. Multi-platinum singers from George Strait and Brad Paisley to Grammy nominee Kelsea Ballerini joined together with TV stars from the show "Nashville" and more on Monday (27 FEB. 2017) at the Nashville Honors Gala benefiting the T.J. Martell Foundation. Proceeds benefited leukemia, cancer and AIDS research. People could donate on hundreds of items and watch performances by musicians. Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie Daniels said he is a cancer survivor, thanks to his doctor, Dr. Joseph Smith, who was also receiving an award that night. "About 15 years ago, I think that he - Dr. Smith - treated me for cancer and I have been cancer-free that whole time, so yes it's very special to me. Very special," said the 80-year-old. Kelsea Ballerini, who is nominated for two awards at the upcoming Academy of Country Music Awards in April, said she met a teenage cancer patient who was very inspiring to her. "I went to St. Jude for the first time a couple of years ago and I met a girl named Ali, who was 16 at the time and was battling cancer and just fell in love with her story and the way that she was just so positive and I don't know, I just... I fell in love with her, and so I think she's probably the closest person to me that has been through that," Ballerini said. "And so kind of everything that I do now that involves that, I kind of think of her and that's what makes me do it." Olympic gold medal skater Scott Hamilton has battled cancer a few times over his life, including brain tumors and testicular cancer. His foundation is opening a new proton therapy treatment center in Tennessee for cancer patients. "So our platform at the Scott Hamilton Cares Foundation is we really want to advance treatment options that treat the cancer and spare the patient," Hamilton said. "So proton therapy is huge and immuno-therapies and targeted therapies are fantastic. So that's what we're all about." Actor Charles Esten was the host of the event, but many of fans of the TV show "Nashville" were recently surprised by the sudden death of character Rayna James, portrayed by actress Connie Britton. Esten said Britton's departure from the show was a difficult episode for him. "We all get that it's a fictional character, but sometimes fictional characters for all of us find their way into your hearts and their way into your lives. Rayna James was one of those, so for a lot of people it's been very difficult, and we get that," said Esten. "As difficult as it was for any of them, or was for them, believe me it was the same way for us. Shooting this last episode - that was the most difficult episode I have ever done, most difficult scenes I have done of anything ever." Esten's daughter is also a survivor of leukemia and he said he believes that these fundraisers are key to saving lives. "My wife and I have a daughter who when she was 2 and half was diagnosed with leukemia - Addie. And Addie is extremely happy, healthy, very strong girl right now; in her junior year of high school; incredible soccer player. We know that came, yes from prayer, but also people before us that had done research and that research was sponsored by people that did events like this, that raised money. Any way I can be a part of that, I am always happy to. And that doesn't even begin to touch on the type of nights these are with the incredible people that are here to honor the people that we are honoring."
