Patients at BC Children’s Hospital were delighted by a visit today with one of the world’s most famous pirates, Captain Jack Sparrow. Hollywood actor Johnny Depp arrived at the hospital dressed dread to toe as his character from “The Pirates of the Caribbean” movie franchise. The charismatic character charmed patients and their families alike, leaving smiles and laughter in his wake during his 5 1/2 hour visit.

She was diagnosed in July 2011 with Anal Cancer and was given 2-4 months to live if she did not do radiation. The doctor told her she had a “death wish”, that she was going to die and walked out. So she made and started taking Cannabis Oil and waited a year to go back to doctor, and then was told she was cancer free. Subsequent biopsies confirmed no trace of cancer. She said to herself if this worked, she would spend the rest of her life telling people about this. Which is what she does. She receives thousands of emails and speaks with hundreds of people a week from around the world. She has played a part in saving well over 1000 lives worldwide and those are just the ones she is aware of as many people don’t get back to her, and then she will hear through the grapevine they are cancer free. http://www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http://www.facebook.com/ctvvi VICTORIA -- A group of researchers at the BC Cancer Agency's Vancouver office have unlocked the code to the deadliest form of breast cancer. The triple negative breast cancer accounts for 16% of all breast cancers, and it kills one in every four women diagnosed. Researchers say the data suggest that some cancers have fewer mutations and are more easily treatable. Doctors say it will now be easier to personalize cancer treatments, so the drugs target the genetic makeup of a particular tumour. Doctors across the province are applauding the breakthrough, but they say a 35% drop in women getting mammograms is worrisome. Women should get screened in their forties, and annually in their fifty's and up. The Canadian Cancer Society says one in nine women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, killing one out of every twenty nine. Learn more about Sunbeam Supports With Warmth program and learn how you can help within your community at http://www.supportswithwarmth.com/ About the Canadian Cancer Society Patient Transportation Program This year, almost 200,000 Canadians are expected to be diagnosed with cancer. For many Canadians, getting to all of their life-saving treatment appointments will be a challenging feat. In Ontario for example, one in five cancer patients cannot get to their life-saving cancer treatment appointments. It is for this reason that Sunbeam launched Supports with Warmth, an awareness and fundraising campaign in support of the Canadian Cancer Society’s patient transportation and support programs. About Gilles Fecteau After a 30-year career as a software development executive at IBM, Gilles decided it was time to focus on things that would help society. Him and his wife, Vicki, started helping a few friends who had cancer with transportation. One day, he saw an ad in the Toronto Star from the Society looking for volunteer drivers – he thought what a perfect opportunity. He decided to give it a try and took his training in December 2004 and started driving in January 2005.

Gord Downie suffers from an aggressive form of brain cancer known as glioblastoma that's incurable, but should not rob the Tragically Hip frontman of his ability to sing, his doctor said today in Toronto. News the Canadian singer, lyricist and performer underwent surgery and six weeks of chemotherapy and radiation came from his neuro-oncologist, Dr. James Perry, on Tuesday morning, hours after fans learned Downie has the disease. The type of tumour is known as a primary cancer — which means it originates in the brain rather than having spread there, Perry explained during a news conference at Sunnybrook Hospital. Glioblastoma is one of the most common causes of cancer death in Canadians between 40 and 60 years old. Watch the full film here: http://www.sidewaysfilm.com/streets-of-plenty/ Synopsis: Vancouver has been voted the best city in the world to live in but it has a dark secret -- the downtown east side ghetto. With the roughest neighbourhood and the highest crime rate in North America living conditions here are on a par with third world countries, and homelessness and drug-addiction are rife. And yet provisions for those in need couldn't be better. Misha Kleider, in an effort to find out what is going wrong, goes under cover for a month in December leaving behind his apartment, his friends and his wallet to see first-hand what life on the streets is really like. Starting with nothing but his underwear he journeys through the institutions and services available to the homeless and makes some startling revelations along the way. The experience upsets any pre-conceived notions about how to "fix" the problem and what begins as a social experiment in the vein of Orwell's' Down and Out in Paris and London takes a darker turn as Misha connects with the real residents of the downtown east side ghetto; the crack addicts, the junkies, the dealers and the diseased. As Misha becomes more involved in this world, the film speeds towards a shocking finale that will leave you breathless and in awe. Streets of Plenty is a fearless, fast paced and entertaining exploration of what it means to live on the streets of North America's worst ghetto.

Dr. Jay Wortman studied Biology and Chemistry at the University of Alberta and Medicine at the University of Calgary. He completed the Family Medicine residency at UBC before starting a private practice in Vancouver. He began combining that with part-time clinics at the STI/HIV the BC Centre for Disease Control where he eventually became the full-time Associate Director. He moved on the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch of Health Canada where he held senior management positions in Ottawa and Vancouver. In 1992, Dr. Wortman developed type 2 diabetes and quickly discovered that it could be controlled by restricting dietary carbohydrates. He went on to do clinical research on low-carbohydrate diets and became a little bit famous for a study he did in the Namgis First Nation of Alert Bay which was the subject of the CBC documentary film, "My Big Fat Diet". His research interest in the dietary management of obesity, pre-diabetes and diabetes led him back into clinical practice.
