Cause of a Cough

02:26
Cause of a Cough A cough is a reflex action to clear your airways of mucus and irritants such as dust or smoke. It's rarely a sign of anything serious. A "dry cough" means it's tickly and doesn't produce any phlegm (thick mucus). A "chesty cough" means phlegm is produced to help clear your airways. Most coughs clear up within three weeks and don't require any treatment. For more persistent coughs, it's a good idea to see your GP so they can investigate the cause. What can cause a cough? There are a number of different causes of short-term (acute) and persistent (chronic) coughs. Short-term coughs Common causes of a short-term cough include: an upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) that affects the throat, windpipe or sinuses – examples are a cold, flu, laryngitis, sinusitis or whooping cough a lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) that affects your lungs or lower airways – examples are acute bronchitis or pneumonia an allergy, such as allergic rhinitis or hay fever a flare-up of a long-term condition such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or chronic bronchitis inhaled dust or smoke In rare cases, a short-term cough may be the first sign of a health condition that causes a persistent cough. Persistent coughs A persistent cough may be caused by: a long-term respiratory tract infection, such as chronic bronchitis asthma – this also usually causes other symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath an allergy smoking – a smoker's cough can also be a symptom of COPD bronchiectasis – where the airways of the lungs become abnormally widened postnasal drip – mucus dripping down the throat from the back of the nose, caused by a condition such as rhinitis or sinusitis gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) – where the throat becomes irritated by leaking stomach acid a prescribed medicine, such as an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE inhibitor), which is used to treat high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease Rarely, a persistent cough can be a symptom of a more serious condition, such as lung cancer, heart failure, a pulmonary embolism (blood clot on the lung) or tuberculosis. Coughs in children Coughs in children often have similar causes to those mentioned above. For example, respiratory tract infections, asthma and GORD can all affect children. Causes of coughs that are more common in children than adults include: bronchiolitis – a mild respiratory tract infection that usually causes cold-like symptoms croup – this causes a distinctive barking cough and a harsh sound known as stridor when the child breathes in whooping cough – look out for symptoms such as intense, hacking bouts of coughing, vomiting, and a "whoop" sound with each sharp intake of breath after coughing Occasionally, a persistent cough in a child can be a sign of a serious long-term condition, such as cystic fibrosis. When to see your GP There's usually no need to see your GP if you or your child have a mild cough for a week or two. However, you should seek medical advice if: you've had a cough for more than three weeks your cough is particularly severe or is getting worse you cough up blood or experience shortness of breath, breathing difficulties or chest pain you have any other worrying symptoms, such as unexplained weight loss, a persistent change in your voice, or lumps or swellings in your neck If your GP is unsure what's causing your cough, they may refer you to a hospital specialist for an assessment. They may also request some tests, such as a chest X-ray, allergy tests, breathing tests, and an analysis of a sample of your phlegm to check for infection. What treatments are available? Treatment isn't always necessary for mild, short-term coughs because it's likely to be a viral infection that will get better on its own within a few weeks. You can look after yourself at home by resting, drinking plenty of fluids, and taking painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. Cough medicines and remedies Although some people find them helpful, medicines that claim to suppress your cough or stop you bringing up phlegm are not usually recommended. This is because there's little evidence to suggest they're any more effective than simple home remedies, and they're not suitable for everyone. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) recommends that over-the-counter cough and cold medicines shouldn't be given to children under the age of six. Children aged 6 to 12 should only use them on the advice of a doctor or pharmacist. A homemade remedy containing honey and lemon is likely to be just as useful and safer to take. Honey shouldn't be given to babies under the age of one because of the risk of infant botulism.

10 Warning Signs Your Heart Isn't Working Properly

09:25
How to Prevent Heart Disease. About 610,000 people die from heart disease each year in the U.S. alone. There are tons of factors that can cause a person to develop heart problems, but most of them come down to poor lifestyle choices. Your body gives you warning signs early on so that you can catch an illness in its early stages or even prevent it altogether and save your life. Here are 10 of the most common red flags that indicate bad heart health. #heartproblems #healthyheart #bodysigns A cough that won't quit 1:38 A persistent cough can be a symptom of all kinds of health issues, and cardiovascular disease is one of them. For instance, a chronic cough that produces a pinkish bloody liquid is very common in people with heart failure. Despite what it sounds like, heart failure doesn't mean that the heart completely stops beating. It just means that a person’s heart isn’t pumping blood as well as it should be. As a result, the body doesn't get enough oxygen since it’s carried to all the tissues by the blood. Nausea and loss of appetite 3:07 A lot of heart disease patients show a lack of appetite, nausea, or both, even if they've had just a couple bites of food. The reason for that is built-up fluid around the liver and intestines that interferes with proper digestion. These symptoms are usually accompanied by abdominal pain, upset stomach, or feeling bloated. In fact, abdominal cramps that come and go in short spurts are extremely common right before a heart attack. Your skin becomes paler or takes on a bluish tint 5:28 Being naturally pale doesn’t necessarily mean you have a heart condition. But sudden paleness can be a result of reduced blood flow due to a heart that’s not pumping blood as effectively as it should be. Shock, which can be caused by any condition that prevents the blood in your body from circulating properly, is the main reason why people who are suffering from a heart attack or heart failure turn pale all of a sudden. Chronic or sudden fatigue 7:02 Fatigue can be one of the main symptoms indicating an impending heart attack. Women are more likely to experience heart-related fatigue than men, with 70% of female heart attack patients reporting that they’d felt extremely tired before their episode. Physical or mental activity isn't the reason for such exhaustion, and it increases by the end of the day if it’s due to a failing heart. It’s really hard for this symptom to go unnoticed. Sometimes it's exhausting just to perform even the simplest tasks, like making the bed or taking a shower. Music: The 126ers - Darkness of My Sun Density & Time - City of Jewels https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS 10. Pain that spreads to the arm 1:01 9. A cough that won't quit 1:38 8. Swollen legs, ankles, and feet 2:25 7. Nausea and loss of appetite 3:07 6. Extreme levels of anxiety 3:47 5. Lightheadedness or fainting 4:26 4. Your skin becomes paler or takes on a bluish tint 5:28 3. Skin rashes or unusual spots 6:20 2. Chronic or sudden fatigue 7:02 1. Increased perspiration 7:45 SUMMARY -If their heart isn’t working properly, a lot of men feel pain in their left arm, while women experience the same pain in either or both arms. -A persistent cough can be a symptom of all kinds of health issues, and cardiovascular disease is one of them. -When your heart isn’t pumping enough blood through the body, fluid from your blood vessels leaks into surrounding tissues. Your lower extremities are the most affected simply due to gravity. -A lot of heart disease patients show a lack of appetite, nausea, or both, even if they've had just a couple bites of food. -People who suffer from extreme anxiety from a very early age or most of their life are more prone to developing coronary heart disease. -Feeling lightheaded and experiencing temporary loss of consciousness, also known in the scientific community as “syncope”, is super common among heart patients. -Sudden paleness can be a result of reduced blood flow due to a heart that’s not pumping blood as effectively as it should be. -People with eczema were found to have a 48% chance of suffering from high blood pressure and a 29% possibility of having high cholesterol. -Sometimes it's exhausting just to perform even the simplest tasks, like making the bed or taking a shower before a heart attack. -People experience flu-like symptoms, have clammy skin, and sweat regardless of the air temperature or physical exertion. The Top 10 Symptoms of an Aortic Aneurysm

04:34
The Top 10 Symptoms of an Aortic Aneurysm. An aortic aneurysm is a bulge in a section of the body’s main artery (aorta), which carries oxygen-rich blood to the brain and rest of the body. If the wall of the aorta becomes weak, it can balloon out and may eventually even rupture. A ruptured aortic aneurysm is a serious emergency that can lead to massive bleeding and death. Fortunately, there are usually signs that an aneurysm is developing before it bursts. Deep, Aching Pain. Aortic aneurysms can occur in the chest or abdomen (stomach area) and are usually accompanied by a deep pain that some refer to as “gnawing” in nature. The pain often radiates into the shoulder blade, back, or flank. In some cases, it may affect the groin or legs. Pain usually lasts hours o days (https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/health-topics/topics/arm/signs). Pulsating Sensation. Some people with aneurysms report a pulsating sensation in their chest or abdomen. Other say that they are more aware of their heart beating. This is most common with abdominal aortic aneurysms. Cough. An aneurysm in the chest can irritate the nerve to the lungs or throat. This can result in a nagging, dry cough. This can also result in trouble breathing. Hoarseness. If the aneurysm puts pressure on the laryngeal nerve, it can cause your voice to change. Hoarseness is the most common complaint, but some people report changes in the pitch and/or tone of their voice. Cold Feet. If the aneurysm alters the flow of blood substantially, it can affect circulation and this can result in blue, cold feet and legs. An aneurysm can also be a place for blood clots to form, which can dislodge and affect cause pain, coldness, and even tissue death in the legs (http://www.webmd.com/heart-disease/tc/aortic-aneurysm-symptoms). Trouble Swallowing. Because the aorta runs very close the esophagus (tube connecting the mouth and stomach), aneurysms can sometimes put pressure on the esophagus. This can make swallowing difficult. People often report having food stuck in their throat. Fever and Weight Loss. In rare cases, an aneurysm can become inflamed and cause systemic problems including fever and weight loss. Inflammatory aneurysms can affect other organs like kidneys and the bladder as well. Constipation. Some people with aneurysms report trouble with bowel movements. This may be due to changes in blood supply to the GI tract or as a result of an aneurysm putting pressure on nerves that supply the gut. Dizziness. Aneurysms can sometimes affect blood pressure, which can result in orthostatic hypotension. This is a condition in which people feel dizzy when they sit up from lying down or when they stand from sitting. Fullness. Feeling full, even after minimal food intake, is a rare symptom of an aortic aneurysm. The feeling of fullness may be accompanied by nausea and even vomiting (http://www.emedicinehealth.com/aortic_aneurysm/page2_em.htm#what_are_the_symptoms_of_an_aortic_aneurysm). Potential Risk Factors. Aortic aneurysms can occur in anyone, but are more likely in people who smoke, have high blood pressure, and those with high cholesterol. A family history of aortic aneurysms is also a risk factor (http://my.clevelandclinic.org/services/heart/disorders/aortic-aneurysm/Abdominal-Aortic-Aneurysm). If you think you may have an aortic aneurysm developing, don’t wait to see a doctor. An X-ray, CT scan, or MRI is usually all that is needed to make a diagnosis. Be careful: The First Signs And Symptoms Of Lung Cancer That You Should Not Ignore

05:05
Be careful: The First Signs And Symptoms Of Lung Cancer That You Should Not Ignore First. Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in men and women, and the leading cause of cancer death according to the American Cancer Society. While you may think that smokers are the only segment of the population at risk for lung cancer, you may be surprised to know that twenty percent of lung cancer deaths are people who do not smoke. The American Cancer Society explains that air pollution, secondhand smoke, gas, and cancer-causing agents, such as asbestos and gas oil, are the main risk factors for lung cancer. The best defense against lung cancer is to know the first signs and symptoms. The sooner you visit your doctor and the sooner the cancer is diagnosed, the better chance of recovery. Continue reading to learn about the first signs and symptoms of lung cancer. Frequent illness. If you have noticed a spike in your frequency of illnesses such as colds, flu, bronchitis or pneumonia, you should talk to your doctor about the possible causes of your depressed immune system. Dr. Kelley says that when cancer sits in lung tissue and bronchial tubes, the lungs become more susceptible to the disease. Unexplained weight loss. If you have lost interest in food or feel full quickly after eating, lung cancer may be affecting your appetite. Dr. Kelley recommends having a notebook to record symptoms and possible causes, such as food poisoning, food allergy, PMS in women, or gastrointestinal diseases. If the cause is unexplained, you need the attention of your doctor. Pain of the fingers. You may be surprised to know that thick and painful fingertips are a typical symptom of lung cancer. This is because lung tumors release chemicals in the bloodstream that stimulate the growth of bones and tissues at the fingertips and under the nails. Dr. Kelley says that you should tell your doctor about any thickening, swelling, or tapping on your fingers. Pain in the torso. If you experience persistent dull pain in the chest, shoulder, back, or abdomen, you may be experiencing direct pressure from a lung tumor. According to Dr. Kelley, chest pain is a symptom in one in four patients with lung cancer. Hoarsely. If your voice sounds a little hoarse or if you feel pain when swallowing or talking, you may have lung cancer. NHS Choices says that this common symptom is a reason to call your doctor, especially when accompanied by a persistent cough, wheezing or coughing up blood. Shortness of breath. This is a common symptom in women who are often misdiagnosed as a side effect of age or inactivity. Shortness of breath is a sign of adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer in women. Weakness in the upper limbs. Weakness in the upper limbs, loss of coordination and muscle cramps are all symptoms of paraneoplastic syndrome, a condition related to lung cancer in which hormonal substances are secreted by tumors. Breast growth in men. One less talked about symptom in male lung cancer patients is enlargement of the breast around and under the nipple. Dr. Kelley explains that this is a symptom of paraneoplastic syndrome, caused by the release of hormones, proteins and other substances into the bloodstream. https://youtu.be/cALmN0f5w_g

Dry Cough During Pregnancy - Everything You Need To Know

05:50
What Causes Dry Cough During Pregnancy: Many women experience a dry cough during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester. Here are the major causes why pregnant women experience a dry cough: 1. Allergies: Women who suffer from allergies very often experience coughing during pregnancy. When an allergen enters the body’s airway, it can make breathing difficult and cause coughing. 2. Asthma: If a woman has asthma, she can experience a dry cough and breathing difficulties during pregnancy. 3. Bronchospasm: Women with chronic bronchitis can experience bronchospasm (over activity of the bronchioles muscles), which too can cause dry cough. Bronchospasm can also occur as a reaction to insect bite and during allergic reaction to certain foods. 4. Rhinitis Of Pregnancy: Here is a condition that afflicts only pregnant women and cause coughing. During pregnancy, the level of estrogen in the body can shoot up and lead to swollen mucous membranes in the nose. Rhinitis of pregnancy can cause congestion and dry cough too. 5. Weakened Immune System: When a woman is pregnant, her immune system is at its weakest. So, it easy to catch infections that cause a cough if one is not careful. 6. Heartburn: Stomach acid and heartburn are common pregnancy problems and can cause a dry cough in some cases. [ Read: Heartburn During Pregnancy ] Can Dry Cough In Pregnancy Causes Complications? Anybody who has ever experienced a severe bout of coughing knows how irritating it can be. But can dry cough in pregnancy cause more serious complications? When you are pregnant, your body is already in a super fragile state. Coughing can further aggravate the fragile pregnant body. Here are some of the complications you can face, thanks to coughing: 1. Incontinence: Pregnancy is the one time in your life when embarrassment becomes second nature! Things that earlier made you blush can become passé during pregnancy. But don’t add incontinence to the list. Your uterus takes up too much space when you are pregnant, tends to press the bladder, which can cause incontinence. Add coughing to the mix, and you can experience one too many incidents of urine leakage. 2. Insomnia: Sleep is the biggest victim of pregnancy (and motherhood, in general). When your body is growing rapidly, and every inch of you hurts, sleep can become elusive. A dry cough can aggravate sleep problems, especially in the final trimester. 3. Stress: It is normal for pregnant women to experience a limited amount of stress during their pregnancy. After all, growing a baby is no child’s play! But too much stress not just harms you but can also impact your unborn baby adversely. Many pregnant women tend to stress over the smallest of things, including coughing. 4. Infections and Other Health Issues: Sometimes, it is easy to ignore coughing as just another nuisance and part of life. But when the coughing is due to an infection or some underlying health issue, it can be devastating. An untreated health issue can create problems for your baby too. 5. Improper Nutrition: When you are pregnant, you need to eat a healthy and balanced meal. Unfortunately, a dry cough can make eating difficult and cause nutrition deficiency in extreme cases. Treating Dry Cough While Pregnant: The one thing we can all agree on is that a dry cough is tough on pregnant women. So, it is no wonder that women look for some tricks to ease the coughing and find some relief. We have some easy tips that can help but first things first – if you are experiencing a cough that is causing you discomfort, talk to your doctor. It is important first to understand reasons of a cough before you try to treat it. Self-medicating is a bad idea at the best of times, and when you are pregnant, it can be the shortcut to devastation! If your doctor thinks that your cough is harmless, you can try the remedies and tips mentioned here. But remember, the tips here will only help ease the symptom and will not cure the cause. For that, you need a health care professional. Some of the things you can do to find relief from a dry cough during pregnancy are: Drink plenty of fluids. Keeping your body hydrated is paramount during pregnancy. So drink a lot of water, which will help control a case of a dry cough too. Try drinking lukewarm water with lemon to find relief from a cough. Another great way to soothe an irritated throat and dry cough is honey. Add some honey to warm water and drink it. But do ask your doctor if it is okay for you to consume honey while pregnant because some people can react negatively to it. Cough drops are ever popular and an easy (though temporary) method of cough control. Ask your doctor to recommend a good, pregnancy safe cough drop to find relief. Sleeping during pregnancy, especially when you are suffering from a co

How Do We Cough? - The Mechanism of Coughing - Cough Reflex Animation - Learn Human Body

01:34
Coughing is a sudden expulsion of air from the lungs through the epiglottis at an amazingly fast speed (estimated at 100 miles per hour). With such a strong force of air, coughing is the body’s mechanism for clearing the breathing passageways of unwanted irritants. In order for a cough to occur, several events need to take place in sequence. First, the vocal cords open widely, allowing additional air to pass through into the lungs. Then the epiglottis closes off the windpipe (larynx), and simultaneously, the abdominal and rib muscles contract, increasing the pressure behind the epiglottis. With the increased pressure, the air is forcefully expelled, and creates a rushing sound as it moves very quickly past the vocal cords. The rushing air dislodges the irritant, making it possible to breathe comfortably again. ----- Cough A cough (About this sound pronunciation (help·info) Latin: tussis) is a sudden and often repetitively occurring reflex which helps to clear the large breathing passages from secretions, irritants, foreign particles and microbes. The cough reflex consists of three phases: an inhalation, a forced exhalation against a closed glottis, and a violent release of air from the lungs following opening of the glottis, usually accompanied by a distinctive sound.[1] Coughing is either voluntary or involuntary. Frequent coughing usually indicates the presence of a disease. Many viruses and bacteria benefit evolutionarily by causing the host to cough, which helps to spread the disease to new hosts. Most of the time, irregular coughing is caused by a respiratory tract infection but can also be triggered by choking, smoking, air pollution,[1] asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease, post-nasal drip, chronic bronchitis, lung tumors, heart failure and medications such as ACE inhibitors. Treatment should target the cause; for example, smoking cessation or discontinuing ACE inhibitors. Cough suppressants such as codeine or dextromethorphan are frequently prescribed, but have been demonstrated to have little effect. Other treatment options may target airway inflammation or may promote mucus expectoration. As it is a natural protective reflex, suppressing the cough reflex might have damaging effects, especially if the cough is productive.[2] ------------------------------ The mechanism of cough How do we cough? What happens in you throat and lungs? This action reminds one of a pressure cooker blowing off steam. Sensing something is wrong… Both the upper and lower airways are lined by slow-reacting and fast reacting receptors which can respond to a number of different types of stimuli ranging from dust to irritant gases as well as excess mucus. Once the receptors are triggered, a signal is sent via the vagus nerve, setting up a reflex with the signal being transmitted to your brainstem and consciousness making you aware that you need to clear these noxious particles or gases. Preparing for the cough… The cough centre situated in the medulla in a matter of milliseconds, makes your consciousness aware of the fact that you need to cough as well as sending impulse back down to the diaphragm and intercostal rib muscles, preparing them for the cough action. The first action is that the diaphragm ‘drops’ to suck air into the chest filling the thoracic cavity. The second action following the diaphragm movement is the glottis or ‘voice box’ closes to prevent any air from leaving the chest. Finally the actual cough… Thereafter the cough centre triggers the diaphragm and intercostal muscles to contract, making the thoracic cavity smaller and building up pressure inside the chest… then the closed glottis opens allowing the high pressure air to suddenly escape from the chest through the airways hopefully taking with it any irritating particles, foreign bodies or phlegm which triggered the entire reflex to start with. Air leaving the chest can reach speeds of up to 200 km/h and even faster in the event of a sneeze! ----------------- Pathophysiology A cough is a protective reflex in healthy individuals which is influenced by psychological factors.[3] The cough reflex is initiated by stimulation of two different classes of afferent nerves, namely the myelinated rapidly adapting receptors, and nonmyelinated C-fibers with endings in the lungs. However it is not certain that the stimulation of nonmyelinated C-fibers leads to cough with a reflex as it's meant in physiology (with its own five components): this stimulation may cause mast cells degranulation (through an asso-assonic reflex) and edema which may work as a stimulus for rapidly adapting receptors.

Your Ears Can Indicate Your Health: Don't Ignore These 8 Factors

10:10
It is a normal hygienic procedure to clean our ears once every few days. However, not all of us know that ear wax can also indicate the state of our health. With the help of a Q-tip, you can check the color of your ear wax and understand what it means. TIMESTAMPS What do we know about the human ear? 0:35 Ear wax of a gray color 1:28 Ear wax with traces of blood 2:09 Ear wax of a brown color 3:02 Ear wax of a black color 3:40 Ear wax of a white color 4:25 Ear wax with an unpleasant smell 5:14 Liquid ear wax 6:03 Dry earwax 6:36 See a doctor if you have the following symptoms 7:06 What you shouldn't do to avoid any problems 8:14 Three most interesting facts about your ears 8:47 SUMMARY Ear wax is not a body waste to get rid of regularly, quite the contrary - it's a kind of protection. It keeps the ear canal lubricated, therefore, prevents the ears from itching. Moreover, it prevents different pollutants from entering the inner ear. Even more surprisingly, this substance has antibacterial properties. Our body is a clever mechanism. Did you know that when we chew, the movement pushes ear wax to the outer part of the ear? This way, your ears self-clean! If your ears tend to produce a big amount of ear wax creating a build-up, you can take some preventive measures yourself. - It's effective to use agents softening the wax. They can be mineral or baby oil, or ear drops. It is enough to put a few drops of these substances into your ear once a week to soften the ear wax and help it to come out faster and with ease. - Another way to take care of your ears is to buy a special at-home kit for their irrigation. What Happens To Your Body When you Quit Smoking For 1 hour, 1 Day, 1 Month and 1 Year

05:13
Already feeling sick and tired of smoking? Considering quitting? If yes, you're not alone! Today, there are a whole lot of reasons to quit smoking and the good news is, it's never too late to make the decision! As we already know, smoking is incredibly bad for your health — it's more like a way drawing yourself closer and closer to the grave! But the good news is, you can quit today and start getting your life back. Yes, the benefits of quitting smoking are almost instant — you're likely to see great improvements in as little as 20 minutes! It's however important to note that quitting smoking can be pretty tough in the beginning, but trust me, it's totally worth it! Just try to figure out a plan to handle those cravings, especially in the first few weeks — do this and you'll be well on your way to a new super healthy life. Here are some of the amazing benefits that come along with your decision to quit cigarettes. After 20 minutes to 1 hour As mentioned earlier, smokers are likely to experience impressive improvements in their health just minutes after quitting the habit. For the most part, after 20 minutes, your blood pressure starts to drop back to normal and overall circulation begins to improve. After 12 hours At this point, you should be aware that the cigarettes are chock full of harmful toxins including carbon monoxide. Of course, this gas is present in cigarette smoke and it turns out that excessive inhalation can be incredibly harmful to the body. What's more, carbon monoxide in cigarettes inhibits oxygen from getting into the lungs and blood, and prolonged inhalation within a short time can trigger suffocation. But the good news is, after just 12 hours without a cigarette, the body gets rid of the excess carbon monoxide and improve oxygen levels. After 24 hours Worried about suffering a heart attack as a result of smoking? If yes, you'll be glad to know that the risk decreases just after one day of quitting. Essentially, smoking lowers good cholesterol which eventually increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease. What's more, smoking raises blood pressure and even increase the risk of stroke. But as mentioned earlier, these risks can be alleviated in as little as one day after quitting smoking. Of course, within a short time, the body's oxygen levels increases making it easier for you to exercise and perform other heart-healthy habits. After 48 hours Smokers are also at risk of having damaged nerve endings; more like the ones responsible for senses of smell and taste. But the good news is, after just two days of quitting, the nerve endings may heal and of course, the person will begin to notice a heightened sense of both smell and taste. After 72 hours Made it to the third day? Well, at this point, the nicotine levels in the body are already depleted. Of course, this is a good thing but you should brace yourself for nicotine withdrawal. In essence, after three days of quitting, there's a high chance of experiencing irritability, moodiness, terrible headaches and even cravings. This is just the way your body readjusts to the change. After 1 month At this point, your lung function starts to improve — you may notice less coughing and less shortness of breath. What's more, you're likely to notice a renewed strength to perform cardiovascular activities including running and jumping. After 9 months After nine months of quitting smoking, your lungs will start getting its life back. For the most part, the cilia would have recovered from the harmful effects of cigarette smoke and you'll notice a significant decrease in the frequency of lung infections. For those who might not know, the cilia are delicate hair-like structures inside the lungs that help fight infections. After 1 to 5 years Right now, your risk of developing coronary heart disease will decrease by half and after five years, blood vessels and arteries will begin to widen. It's good to know that this widening indicates that blood is less likely to clot, and that's great. Of course, this improvement lowers the risk of stroke significantly and it continues to reduce as the body heals more and more. All in all, quitting smoking is totally worth it — it's a way of bringing your body back to life. Now it's up to you take the decision and live the super healthy life you've always wanted. Does Rubbing Vicks Vapor Rub into Feet Cure Coughs & Colds

02:02
For more than a century the world's people have rubbed vicks vaporub into their chests. Millions swear by the active ingredients of Vicks VapoRub to soothe cold and flu symptoms and allow them a sound night's sleep. However There has been a lot of hype recently claiming rubbing Vicks VapoRub on your feet helps treat coughs + colds. the unorthodox approach also involves putting on socks over gooed up toes before slipping into bed to save getting your sheets mucky. There are people commenting on the well known website netnums claiming that it works - some of the quotes are on the screen now Writing on the Netmums website, a woman called Julie said: 'Yes have done this… it really does work. I put some on my feet last night as I have a cough and had a great night's sleep. 'Within a few minutes of putting on my feet, putting socks on and lying in bed, I can feel the vapours reach my throat! This only works when going to bed and never works for me during the day.' Another woman called Clare added: 'Agreed – I saw this tip on Facebook and tried it when baby had a bad cough. Was amazed it worked – think I can say it is one of the best tips I've ever read.' Vicks works on coughs and congestive because it contains camphor – an essential oil extracted from trees which is said to calm coughs – and eucalyptus oil, which has antibacterial effects and is used as a decongestant. One theory why this might work is it helps reduce stress by getting people to think about something else like putting vicks on your feet with soaks over, This helps the person relax and breath better. TV doctor Dr Ranj Singh added: 'There is no evidence to suggest it is more effective to put it on your feet so it could just be a placebo effect.' Procter and Gamble, which makes Vicks VapoRub, said: 'It is not in line with what the product is for so we would not endorse it being used in this way.' There’s also been claims that placing a cut onion in one’s sock before sleep can cure a cough and other health ailments, This video has gone viral as well in recent months So to sumerize ther is no evidence it works but will this top people trying it – probably not! I hope you have learned something from this video

✔ Are High Blood Pressure Medications Healthy For You?

03:11
Are High Blood Pressure Medications Healthy For You? Besides lowering blood pressure, all antihypertensive drugs can produce undesirable side effects. This is not surprising since they alter basic body functions not only in the blood vessels. But in the nervous system and kidneys as well. Since they alter basic functions, all drugs must have several effects. Even if a drug acts on only one type of molecule in the body. Because all systems in the body are interconnected it certainly will produce other effects. Some examples. By limiting the ability of the heart to beat faster. Beta blockers reduce the ability of a person to exercise. And thiazide diuretics produce changes in the composition of body fluids. Including blood cholesterol. So by altering basic bodily functions. Drugs affect the ability of the body to adapt to different situations. Typical side effects of some of the more commonly used antihypertensive drugs include. Urinary loss of potassium, fatigue, gastric irritation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, rash, weakness, nasal congestion, impotence, congestive heart failure, mental depression, short-term memory loss, and in the case of beta blockers, reduction of ability to exercise. In fact, the reduction in blood pressure is associated not with improvement in the function of the cardiovascular system. But rather with a suppression of cardiac function. Sometimes other drugs are added to treat these side effects. In addition, antihypertensive drugs may adversely affect other diseases. How common are complications due to these drugs? Well, in a government-sponsored study of over five thousand patients being treated. With drugs for high blood pressure. It turned out that the drug-treated group had fewer strokes. But a worse outcome in coronary disease. In fact, after ten years of treatment. Death due to coronary heart disease was significantly greater in the drug-treated group than in the untreated group. However, no significant effect upon overall rate of death was observed. Altogether, these studies were seen to justify the assumption. That antihypertensive drug treatment saves lives and reduces fatal and nonfatal complications. Of this threat to health. So in spite of the fact that some physicians had begun to worry about. The increasing number of totally unexpected adverse effects for the last forty-five years. Almost all people diagnosed as having primary hypertension have faced the prospect of a lifetime of treatment with drugs. Subscribe Now And leave a comment below! Thank you for watching! An 8-year-old Pomeranian coughs and coughs at night - congestive heart failure

05:33
Wednesday, Apr 6, 2016 I asked the resident from Punggol, North Singapore why he came from a distance to Toa Payoh Vets as most pet owners simply go to the nearest vet clinic down the road. He is a retiree and a taxi driver now competing with Grab Taxi and Uber. He said that he had sent a pet owner to my Surgery some time ago and had asked the owner about Toa Payoh Vets. With a good feedback he came today. His dog had been coughing often at night (nocturnal cough) and one year ago, another vet had told him "water got into his dog's lungs" after an X-ray and so he was given medication for the dog. Recently the dog was coughing loudly at night. "Go and drink water" his wife said to the dog, but the coughing did not stop. So he consulted me. The dog had congestive cardiac failure and with heart disease medication and no strenuous exercise, will live comfortably at least 2 more years. He was happy with the explanation as it takes time and effort to explain to him what caused the coughing. Delayed treatment will lead to heart failure and death.

How to Stop Cough in 1-2 Min Fast (Breathe Easy Exercise to Get Rid of Coughing)

06:35
How to stop and get rid of cough fast (even at night) - Stop cough - Cough cure and most natural treatment. This video explains a simple breathing exercise to eliminate coughing in 2 minutes or less. This natural remedy for chronic or persistent cough was invented by Soviet physicians and tested on thousands of patients with cold, asthma, cystic fibrosis, COPD, emphysema, bronchitis, tuberculosis and many other health problems (even HIV-AIDS and lung cancer). Over 90% of people with chronic cough could testify that they could get rid of cough really fast. The exercise also is the foundation of Buteyko breathing exercises to increase body oxygen levels. It can be used to get rid of cold and stop cough naturally (at night too) since it increases body oxygen levels. For more info about causes and treatment of dry cough, see http://www.e-breathing.com/dry-cough/ . There are 3 exercises how to get rid of cough fast. First one requires the person to learn how to cough with the mouth closed. The next exercise teaches how to cough with one's mouth and nose closed in order to increase body oxygen content. The last and most important exercise is Buteyko reduced breathing exercise. These breathing exercises how to get rid of cough fast are explained by Dr. Artour Rakhimov (NormalBreathing.com). All these techniques how to get rid of cough fast can be used during night sleep as well. If you suffer from chronic or persistent coughing at night, you need to avoid supine sleep (or sleeping on one's back) that exacerbates problems with coughing. Best sleep positions to prevent or stop persistent or chronic coughing are either on your left side or on the chest (tummy). All these breathing exercises are done with nose breathing only and can be used by people with asthma, COPD, bronchitis, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, tuberculosis, HIV-AIDS and many other conditions. This exercise also helps people who suffer from coughing and shortness of breath: http://www.e-breathing.com/symptoms/shortness-of-breath/ . These breathing techniques for chronic or persistent coughing were developed by Dr. K Buteyko and his colleagues. The main remedy is called the Buteyko reduced breathing exercise. You can find more details about how to stop cough fast here: http://www.normalbreathing.com/stop-coughing-naturally.php . Problems with chronic or constant cough are very common during sleep or at night. This symptom takes place in people with asthma, bronchitis, COPD, cystic fibrosis and many other conditions. These most natural remedies can be used during sleep too. If you get more than 30 seconds for the body oxygen test, you will not have any problems with cough, including persistent or chronic cough. Similarly, you can quickly reduce dry cough that is not accompanied with production of mucus of phlegm. In cases of coughing due to acute lung infections, this exercise helps to improve the immune system due to increased O2 levels in body cells. Even faster results can be achieved when a person applies breathing devices that allow use of essential oils, such as eucaliptus oil and tea tree oil. Among such devices are the Frolov breathing device and the Amazing DIY breathing device which can be used as inhalers. The YouTube URL for this video is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqoKp9MLInQ /. This pharmaceutical drug is used to treat congestive heart failure, high blood pressure and many other medical conditions. Research and clinical studies prove it to be a very effective drug class for many, as it works by causing the blood vessels to become enlarged or dilated, and thus causing a reduction in the blood pressure. This lowering of the blood pressure makes it easier for the heart to pump blood and it can improve the function of a failing heart. In the United States, 10 ACE inhibitors are in use: Ramipril (Altace) Enalapril (Vasotec, Epaned) Quinapril (Accupril) Captopril (Capoten) Benazepril (Lotensin) Lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril) Fosinopril (Monopril) Moexipril (Univasc) Trandolapril (Mavik) Perindopril (Aceon) NOTE...that the brand names of all of these above end with the suffix “pril”. NOW.. let’s take a closer look at this drug class, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, these drugs are helpful in treating heart, blood vessel, and kidney problems... Mechanism of Action: The human body is an amazing organism…In order to regulate water and blood pressure, our body follows special mechanisms. For example when the blood pressure drops too low, the kidneys release renin into the bloodstream. Renin then reacts with a protein called angiotensinogen that is produced by the liver. As a result, they form angiotensin I. Then another reaction converts angiotensin I to angiotensin II, with the help of angiotensin-converting enzyme found in the respiratory system. This whole mechanism is known as Renin-angiotensin system (RAS). Angiotensin II is a powerful substance. It circulates around the body in the bloodstream and induces several changes on the cardiovascular system. Such as stimulating adrenal cortex to release adolsterone and Constricting or narrowing down the blood vessels around the body. Aldosterone increases the reabsorption of water and sodium in the tubules of the kidneys. As a result, The volume of the blood and the concentration of salt in the blood increase leading to high blood pressure. The constriction of blood vessels results in high pressure inside the vessels, which also means an increase in blood pressure. Both of these events cause the heart to exert more pressure while pumping blood into the main arteries. Hence, it reverses the low blood pressure but it can also lead to other cardiovascular disorders if it persists for a long time. ACE inhibitors reduce the impact of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) on the blood pressure by inhibiting the angiotensin converting enzyme. As a result, The conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II is slowed down which brings about several changes in the cardiovascular system. The rate of water reabsorption in the kidneys drops and so volume of blood decreases. And the blood vessels relax and become dilated. Both of these factors “reduce the work load on the heart,” (this phrase is a simple explanation that the nurse might give to her patient to explain how the ACE inhibitor

What is COUGH CENTER? What does COUGH CENTER mean? COUGH CENTER meaning & explanation

What is COUGH CENTER? What does COUGH CENTER mean? COUGH CENTER meaning - COUGH CENTER definition - COUGH CENTER explanation. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. The cough center of the brain is a region of the brain which controls coughing, located in the medulla oblongata area of the brain. Antitussives and other cough medicines focus their action on the cough center. The exact location and functionality of the cough center has remained somewhat elusive: while Johannes Peter Müller observed in 1838 that the medulla coordinates the cough reflex, investigating it has been slow because the usual anaesthetics for experimental animals were morphine or opiates, drugs which strongly inhibit cough. In addition, the center likely overlaps with the respiratory rhythm generator networks. It is hence not so much a specific area, but a function within the respiration and reflex networks of the brainstem. Cough receptors project to relay neurones in the solitary nucleus, which project to other parts of the respiratory networks. In particular, the pre-Bötzinger complex may act as a pattern generator for the cough response. Parts of the caudal medullary raphe nucleus (nucleus raphe obscurus and nucleus raphe magnus) are known to be essential for the cough response. Other systems that may be involved in pattern generation and regulation are the pontine respiratory group, the lateral tegmental field and the deep cerebellar nuclei. Successful joint models of medullary systems coordinating breathing, coughing and swallowing has been constructed based on this model. Coughing can occur or be inhibited as a voluntary action, suggesting control from higher systems in the brain. Functional brain imaging of voluntary, suppressed, and induced coughing show that a number of cortical areas can get involved and may be important even for non-voluntary coughing. In contrast, voluntary coughing does not seem to activate medullary systems.

Boost Metabolism: Steamroom vs. Sauna - Which is Better? - Thomas DeLauer

07:32
Boost Metabolism: Sauna vs. Steam Room- Which is better? Find out how to elevate your mood, boost your metabolism, detoxify your body and reduce muscle stiffness. Learn this and more at http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com You may have heard discussion around the benefits of the sauna and the steam room, but is one better for you than another? There is only so much time in the day to spend at the gym, so we want to be sure to get the most out of what we do in the least amount of time. Saunas have been around for thousands of years. Finland has a sauna tradition that has been around for two thousand years strong, and many attribute their endurance and longevity to the time they spend in the sauna. Saunas and steam rooms are touted to induce mental and physical relaxation, and both induce large amounts of sweating, which has health benefits such as releasing toxins from the body. So where does the difference lie? Saunas are dry heat whereas steam rooms are at 100% humidity. One of the biggest differences has to do with temperature - when a room is humid we feel as though it is hotter than it actually is. Due to this, saunas are able to be kept at a much higher temperature than steam rooms. Saunas range from 160 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, wheres steam rooms are at 110 to 120. In order to understand how these differences would lead to the best option of the two, we must first understand the benefits of both saunas and steam rooms. Benefit 1: Increased blood flow Blood vessels enlarge when your body temperature rises, allowing increased delivery of oxygen and nutrients throughout your body. After particularly vigorous exercise, try to get 15-30 minutes in the sauna or steam room to reap the benefits of this increased nutrient and oxygen delivery to your muscles. The increased blood flow allows an acceleration of tissue repair post workout. The faster you heal the better you feel and more able you are to take your next workout to a higher level. Benefit 2: Increased metabolism and physical endurance Increase the temperature and you will increase your metabolism, which is simply how quickly your body burns calories, due to this heat. Your body works harder to try and keep itself cool, thereby burning calories at a higher rate. Benefit 3: Inflammation Exposure to the high heat results in a release of noradrenaline, adrenaline and cortisol, which all have anti-inflammatory properties. This can help in mobility and pain, temporarily relieving stiffness post workout. Many people suffering with arthritis have reported relief after spending time in the sauna or steam room. Benefit 4: Sweating Sweating helps to lower blood pressure by secreting salts, detoxify by expelling toxins through our pores and helps to increase caloric expenditure. Benefit 5: Mood We are all familiar with the pleasant mood that you feel after going to the sauna or steam room. People report feeling less anxiety, increased relaxation, improved general mood and even increased alertness after trips to the sauna and steamroom. Why does this happen? 1. How to reduce high blood pressure /\ Reduce high blood pressure without medication

04:21
If you want to know how to reduce high blood pressure, watch this video complete . Blood pressure refers to the force exerted on artery walls by the blood flowing through them. The narrower and stiffer your arteries become, the higher your blood pressure goes. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80. If your blood pressure is above this, you have high blood pressure (hypertension). Once you learn the basics about high blood pressure, you can follow some simple steps to change your lifestyle and lower your blood pressure. Test yourself. You can have high blood pressure for months to years without any symptoms, but the damage caused by hypertension can eventually lead to severe health problems and even death. Generally speaking, the health problems from high blood pressure are the result of two major health stages. First, the blood vessels in your body narrow and stiffen. Second, and as a result of this, there is a decreased blood flow to different organs and body parts such as the heart, the brain, the kidneys, the eyes, and the nerves. This can lead to severe complications and life threatening situations if left unchecked. Exercise more. To help lower your blood pressure, you should incorporate more exercise into your daily routine. You can try both aerobic exercises such as walking, jogging, or swimming and resistance or strength training. The American Heart Association recommends that for overall cardiovascular health, adults get at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity at least 5 days per week for a total of 150 minutes. You can also get at least 25 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity at least 3 days per week for a total of 75 minutes and moderate- to high-intensity muscle-strengthening activity at least 2 days per week. Reduce your stress. Stress, anxiety, and depression can increase your risk of developing hypertension. Learning how to manage and cope with stress can improve both your emotional and physical health. Participating in hobbies you enjoy, meditation, and yoga are just a few possible ways to rest and relax. Cut down on alcohol. If you're a man, try to limit the amount of drinks you have daily to no more than 2. If you're a woman, try to limit the amount of drinks you have daily to no more than 1. Heavy drinkers who want to limit their alcohol intake should slowly lower intake over the course of several weeks. Heavy drinkers who suddenly cut back alcohol intake put themselves at risk to develop severe high blood pressure. Quit smoking. Smoking is one of the most common and avoidable contributing factors to cardiovascular death. The chemicals in cigarettes cause an increase in heart rate and vessel constriction, which cause increased blood pressure. More importantly, cigarette smoking causes stiffening of the arteries over time, which can persist for many years after quitting. Limit your caffeine intake. Caffeine causes an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, especially in those who do not consume it regularly. At high doses, it can even cause irregular heart beats. The current recommendations are to consume no more than 400 mg daily. Use herbal remedies. Although not scientifically verified, there are several herbal remedies which are thought to help hypertension. As a rule, however, don't substitute these unverified herbal remedies for proven scientific advice. Instead, supplement your diet with them if they are approved by your healthcare provider. I Drank a Glass of Wine Every Day, See What Happened to Me

07:35
Studies have shown that drinking a glass of wine every day is incredibly beneficial for your system: it removes toxins from your body and improves your brain function. We decided to find out whether these statements are true by having one glass of wine a day for a whole month. The experiment started out great: I felt super sophisticated having my evening wine in front of the TV. But on Day 3, the alcohol started messing with my sleep cycle. I started craving water during these little bedtime disruptions. In fact, this crazy nighttime thirst became so frequent that I would keep a glass of water on my night stand. One of the best things that happened during the experiment was a change in how I “partied” with my friends. I would invite people over for a glass of wine, and those who were game, showed up. In the middle of Week 2 of the experiment, my appearance had changed. Unfortunately, it wasn’t for the better. A weight gain and dark circle under my eyes and breakouts – it wasn’t something I wanted to get. I checked my blood pressure every day, and I can say with confidence that alcohol didn't change a thing in that respect. My health was perfectly fine. But by the end of the experiment, I started having trouble concentrating, and I felt weak and tired most of the time. For one, drinking at home from time to time definitely has its perks. Getting rid of unnecessary get-togethers is also a big reward from this experiment. It helped me figure out who I want to spend my time with and who I don’t mind seeing less often. Plus, I got so interested in the whole culture of drinking wine and eating cheese. On the downside, I can't agree with scientists on this one. In my opinion, drinking wine on a daily basis does no good for your health, even if it's just one glass. I decided to see if it’s true for myself. -I felt great at first, but started having trouble sleeping on Day 3. -After a couple of days, I started having a crisis of conscious. I felt like I was doing something wrong by drinking every single day. -Spending evenings in my cozy home was definitely a nice bonus for me. I was only hanging out only with people I found truly interesting, or my closest friends. -In the middle of Week 2, I noticed a weight gain, dark circles under my eyes and breakouts. By the end of the experiment, I started having trouble concentrating, and I felt weak and tired most of the time. -Drinking at home is cheaper than going to the bar every week, and you can just relax whenever you want. However, drinking wine on a daily basis does no good for your health, even if it's just one glass. Home Remedies for Cough Variant Asthma

10:16
Home Remedies for Cough Variant Asthma Cough variant asthma (CVA), is a milder form of asthma. Children are more likely than adults to have this type of asthma. Cough variant asthma doesn’t have typical asthma symptoms. CVA is mainly associated with one symptom a chronic cough that is usually dry and unproductive, which may be worse at night. This cough lasts at least six to eight weeks. Due to extensive coughing, there can be increased inflammation in the airways. However, the risk of severe airway narrowing is lower with this type of asthma. Dry and unproductive coughing can cause sleep disruption, exhaustion, cracked or fractured ribs, vomiting, and lightheadedness. Just like standard chronic asthma, experts are still not sure what causes CVA. However, experts believe that allergens like pollen may cause coughing. Another possible reason may be an infection in the respiratory system that ultimately triggers coughing episodes. In some people, CVA may even be associated with taking beta-blockers, which are used to treat conditions like heart disease, heart failure, migraines, hypertension and abnormal heart rhythms. People who have another allergic condition, regular asthma or a relative with asthma are at a higher risk for cough variant asthma. Other risk factors include being overweight, smoking, exposure to secondhand smoke, and exposure to environmental or occupational irritants. If cough variant asthma is not treated and managed properly, it may progress into classic asthma. According to a study published in Current Respiratory Medicine Reviews in 2011, 30 to 40 percent of adult patients with CVA, unless adequately treated, may progress to classic asthma. Treatment for cough variant asthma is not difficult if the problem is diagnosed timely. Many simple and effective home remedies can provide relief from the dry cough and bring comfort. Here are the home remedies for cough variant asthma.

Lower Blood Pressure Naturally

03:41
Visit http://www.control-your-blood-pressure.com When the pressure of the blood that is exerted against the walls of the blood vessels after and during every heart beat is lower than normal, you have low blood pressure. This can result in insufficient blood flow to the important body organs like the heart and the brain. And this can lead to various low blood pressure symptoms. You may detect low blood pressure symptoms during the use of various drugs such as those used for surgery, anti-anxiety agents, treatment for high blood pressure, diuretics, heart medicines, antidepressants, narcotics, alcohol, and other types of drugs. You may notice the low blood pressure symptoms also because of dehydration, heart failure, or heart attack, anaphylaxis, shock, diabetes (especially in advanced stage), etc. The most common low blood pressure symptoms are dizziness and lightheartedness. But there are other low blood pressure symptoms, and they are: a tendency to faint, black or maroon stools, chest pain, wheezing, irregular heart beat, consistent high fever, head ache, back pain, or stiff neck. If you happen to spot any of the low blood pressure symptoms, it is recommended that you consult a doctor as soon as possible. Because of low blood pressure not enough blood reaches to all parts of the body and thus the cells do not receive the correct amount of oxygen and nutrients. Therefore, the waste products in the blood are not removed. Don't overlook the risk of low blood pressure if you cough with phlegm or if you are suffering from prolonged diarrhea, or if you are unable to eat or drink, or if you experience burning urinary symptoms or even if you are taking new medicines, because all these are low blood pressure symptoms. When you start experiencing low blood pressure symptoms remember that the brain is the first organ to malfunction in such situations because it's located at the top of the body and as a result you will experience dizziness or even fainting. You should be aware that if you don't treat low blood pressure seriously it might lead to brain damage. When you have low blood pressure, blood is not adequately supplied to the heart muscles and therefore breathlessness and chest tightness forms one of the common low blood pressure symptoms. When you have prolonged low blood pressure all organs start malfunctioning and this leads to shock. You must take precautionary measures to avoid the situation from getting worse when you have low blood pressure and you must take your doctor's advice. You must try to be more physically active and must try to lose weight. You should also maintain a healthy diet and limit your alcohol intake. All these will help you to keep your low blood pressure symptoms under control. In spite of all the harmful aspects of low blood pressure, researchers say that it is better than high blood pressure because people experiencing low blood pressure symptoms tend to live longer than people suffering from high blood pressure symptoms do. If you suspect you are suffering with low blood pressure you should consult your primary care physician straight away.
