Vegan diet mistakes are something that many people make when eating whole foods, vegan and raw food diet. I have been eating a fruit-based, high raw vegan diet for about 9 years now. Even though I have been eating what is a very healthy diet and which has given me so many great health benefits, I still made lots of vegan diet mistakes that you can and need to avoid, and I've also learnt many lessons that can help you. These popular vegan diet mistakes can compromise your healing and restoration on this lifestyle. One of my big vegan diet mistakes was not adapting this lifestyle to my own specific health needs. When I came to raw foods, I had many health issues, from chronic fatigue and Candida through to hormonal imbalances and hypothyroidism. I also discovered that I had Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which is an autoimmune condition. Although I've lowered my medication after switching to this diet and improved my condition a lot, 3 years into a fully raw vegan diet, my anti-bodies were still high. Diet itself is a huge component of healing Hashimoto's or other autoimmune conditions and hormonal imbalances, however there could be other causes of it as well that need to be addressed, such as parasites, heavy metals and gut issues. So if you're not seeing improvement to your condition within 3 months of changing your diet and lifestyle, there may be other root causes that you need to address. Everyone, men and women alike need to pay attention to the amount of excess estrogens that may be in the foods you eat. You want to keep your estrogen load low so as not to cause hormonal imbalance. Estrogen can also cause thyroid issues in men and women as well as reproductive issues. The first step to lowering your estrogen naturally is to pay attention to foods containing estrogen in excess. Estrogen rich foods: 1. Factory farmed meat: meats these days are treated with estrogens to get the meat to swell, and to keep dairy cows lactating constantly. The estrogen will typically pass through to the consumer via the fat in the meat or dairy. 2. Flax seeds and estrogenic lignans: lignans are found to be so estrogenic that researchers use them specifically as among the foods to LOWER testosterone levels in subjects. 3. Soy: soy has been touted as a health food, and is now in most packaged foods so it's quite surprising that it's one of the estrogen foods to avoid. It contains compounds known as isoflavones 4. Beans: researchers found beans to be estrogenic and goitrogenic . Legumes like chickpeas (garbanzo beans) red beans, black-eyed peas, green peas and split peas are also estrogenic and black beans pack 5,330 micrograms of estrogen per 100 grams. Hummus (from chickpeas) has 993 micrograms of estrogen per 100 grams. 5. I would say that 95% of the information you hear about this topic -- online, articles, blogs, youtube and so forth --- it's ALL WRONG! These so called ‘experts’ list foods such as “special” fruits or vegetables that have lots of good vitamins. Or spicy foods or alcohol because they may increase your blood flow. Or beans or meat because they have healthy protein. Or whole grains because they have fiber and help with weight loss. It’s a lot of “stuff” that *may* help a LITTLE… but they NEVER address the REAL problem and CAUSE of low libido, which is a HORMONAL IMBALANCE! That’s it! If your sex drive and libido isn’t where you’d like it to be or where it used to be. If you have a hard time getting or maintaining an erection. If you’re just not “driven” -- mentally, physically or emotionally -- when it comes to sex or just life in general. Then the problem is hormonal imbalance which typically means: LESS “pro-sexual” hormones - such as testosterone. MORE “anti-sexual” hormones - such as estrogen, prolactin and cortisol So let’s increase the good and decrease the bad. EAT FAT! The best type of food that increases testosterone is FAT and more specifically, saturated fats and cholesterol. Now, you might be freaking out and think “okay Dr. Sam -- you’re insane!!! My cholesterol is going to go through the roof and I’m going to have a heart attack!” Nope, not true. First of all, over 80% of the cholesterol found in your blood and arteries is NOT from foods you eat -- but produced from your LIVER! (1) Cholesterol and saturated fats help produce most of your sex hormones - especially testosterone. Cholesterol helps lower your stress hormone, cortisol -- which does the OPPOSITE of testosterone. In fact, without cholesterol you’d die eventually. And for those of you are are really concerned about having high cholesterol -- the PRIMARY cause of high cholesterol is AGING and the change in your hormones!!! This is why the older you get, the worse your cholesterol levels. This is why women who go through menopause start having high cholesterol. Again, it all comes down to a hormonal imbalance!!! What MATTERS is WHERE you get your fats. Don’t go fry up some bacon and think this is healthy. Most animal and dairy fats are the problem. Heating oils, processed vegetable fats, hydrogenated and trans fats are the problem. Instead, have HEALTHY fats. Have free range eggs WITH the yolk. The BEST way to eat eggs are RAW --- but if you can’t do that, at least keep the yolk runny and soft, which will increase your “good” HDL cholesterol.(2) If you want to have some free range, grass fed meat or bison/buffalo 2-3x a week, that’s fine too. Grass fed red meat has higher levels of CLA fats, which boost testosterone, reduce cortisol, are anti-inflammatory and help reduce many forms of cancer (4) Other than that, I would stay away from most other meats because they’re processed and full of negative hormones such as ESTROGEN, which will LOWER your testosterone and libido. Lastly, have some HEALTHY saturated fats and one of the best is raw, extra virgin coconut oil. If you're experiencing fatigue, hormonal imbalances and autoimmune issues, then healing your gut is often the number one step to take. Your gut is at the very center of your health. How do you explain these failures to thrive on the raw vegan diet? Thats a great question. Lets look at low bone density. There are a few factors involved. One is an insufficient amount of magnesium in the diet, or an insufficient amount of silica in the diet, or a detoxification process which is too much, too fast, and which leaves one deplete of magnesium, silica, calcium and iron. Also, theres a hormonal aspect to this. We find that some people, if theyre not getting the proper raw materials, cannot produce the proper hormones. For example, if someone gets too estrogenic, they will start losing bone mass. So we need to have foods that are testosterone builders or progesterone builders, or that build DHEA. Foods like that are coconut oil, yam, maca, evening primrose oil, the fennel class of foods, and many other specific foods that do that. These foods can give you the proper hormone-building materials. That still may not be enough for some certain people. If its not, then I recommend going with a unique type of coconut product called pregnenelone (which has already been reacted along the path with the metabolic pathway towards producing progesterone, and/or testosterone). That is a supplement, but its really coming from a food. An additional benefit is that it helps boost your thyroid gland, which is essential to a faster metabolism. The boost occurred within 10 minutes and reached a maximum 30-40 minutes after drinking. Drinking ice water, burns more calories due to the “thermogenic”, effects. Your body has to turn up your body temperature to “cool” down the ice water. Studies also suggest that drinking one or two glasses of water before a meal can fill you up so you naturally eat less. Plus, even mild dehydration will slow down your metabolism by as much as 5 percent.
