Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 4 hours Cost: $100 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Building a Holiday Toy Box: Miter saw Table saw Router and rabbeting bit Pocket screw jig Drill Clamps Palm sander Jigsaw Brad nailer and compressor Shopping List: 1x4” pine boards 1x8” pine boards ½” plywood birch panels Pocket screws Wood glue 80-100 grit sandpaper Brad nails Steps: 1. Cut the 1x4” boards to a desired rough length using a miter saw. 2. Lay out the boards for the front, back, and bottom of one side. Use the fourth piece to determine the angle for the top of the box. Mark the boards at a desired angle and cut it using the miter saw. 3. Repeat this process for the other side of the box. 4. Cut the stiles and rails for the front of the box at the desired length. 5. Using the table saw, cut dados along the perimeters of the side of the stiles receiving the panel and cut rabbets into the ½” plywood for the sides and front of the box. Keep the panel flush with the backs of the stiles and rails. Be careful to not cut the dados all the way through each board. 6. Cut the panels to size. The ones on the side should be at the same angle as the stiles. 7. Use the router to cut the rabbet on all the panels. 8. Assemble the sides using pocket screws and wood glue. Slide the panels in before securing the fourth stile. 9. Fill the pocket holes using plugs and the wood glue. 10. Sand all the pieces of the toy box. 11. Cut a rabbet using the table saw on the back of the two sides of the toy box. 12. Use the router to add a curve to the front edge of both sides of the box. Sand the sides. 13. Add a curve to the front of the box. Do this by putting a nail at the center of the desired arch, hold a scrap piece of wood tight to the bottom front corners, and trace the curve with a pencil. Cut it out using a jigsaw. 14. Add a cleat to the bottom of the front and sides of the box to hold the bottom of the box in place. 15. Cut a dado in the front, back, and bottom of the box to accept a divider. 16. Assemble the rest of the box using more pocket screws and wood glue. 17. Glue the bottom panel for the box onto the cleat, then secure it with brad nails. 18. Repeat the process for the back of the box. 19. Cut the center divider to width. 20. Slide the center divider into the dados in the front and back of the box. 21. Transfer measurements from the sides of the box to the center divider and cut it parallel to the sides using the jigsaw. The height should be slightly shorter than the side panels by about an inch. 22. Nail the center divider to the back of the box. 23. Cut a top shelf for the box to width and length. Round it with the router and sand. Screw it to the top of the box using pocket screws. Resources: All the materials Tom and Kevin used to build the toy box, including the birch panels, the pine boards, wood glue, and pocket screws can all be purchased at home centers and lumber supply stores. Making a Cubby Shelf

12:25
We needed more storage in Claire's room. We came up with a cubby shelf of nine cubbies in a three by three grid. Each cubby holds an eleven inch fabric box. I found I could build this project with one piece of 4 by 8 plywood. I start by cutting out the pieces for the cabinet carcass. Then I glued and nailed the pieces together starting from the inside working outward. I cut a rabbet for the back, and attached the back, which gives the piece great rigidity. Next I made the top cap. This consists of a frame with a piece of plywood in the center. The function of the top cap is to hide the ends of the plywood sides. Next I made the base. This consists of a frame on four legs. The frame is mitered with biscuit joints. The four legs are turned on the lathe. I attached the base to the carcass with screws. The whole things was sanded and painted. The fabric boxes fit perfect.

Making a Tool Tote - Woodworking Project

10:07
It was my friend Jack's wedding and I wanted to make him a gift, a tool tote from old floorboards we cut up a long time ago was the idea. A hazel branch for the handle and sapele dowels make up the rest of the tote, all made from recycled wood saved from the dump. Hopefully this will help him get started in doing a bit of woodwork! I hope you enjoy the video and please feel free to leave your comments and suggestions below. Thank you. Woodworking Projects: How to Make a Moxon Vise on the Cheap

11:36
How to build a Moxon Vise on the Cheap, in this Woodworking project video we are going to learn how to make a Moxon Vise, this project would also be easy for a beginner in woodworking to make. We will go through the steps to build the Moxon Vise and as well as learn some woodworking techniques like using a chisel. http://www.onewood.com.au/woodworking-projects-how-to-make-a-moxon-vise-on-the-cheap/ Below is a transcript of the video. 0:00 Todays Woodworking project is this cheap and easy Moxon bench vise that you can knock out in no time at all. Today's woodworking project is this moxon style bench vise this is a great little vise pretty cheap to make it cost me $27 - $28 for all the parts not including the wood for the wood I just used some hardwood I had lying around some Australian Brush box but you could use anything just get some plywood laminate it together it will cost you nothing even just some 2" x 6" boards would be fine as well there a couple of little cheap options its better than selling your kidney for those standard moxon vice bench vise kits that you get around the place nice little simple handles that you can turn on pretty fast its quiet sturdy when something is in there its staying in there so I'm quiet happy with this little project. All you need for this project is some wood some washers some bolts some nuts and some threaded rod. The piece of wood I have picked it does have a cup in it so what I'm going to do is use my hand plane just to get it out. I'm just going to use a Grr-ripper and a Grr-rip block if you haven't seen a grip block these are another product from Microjig they have these little drop down feet so when you push it down they drop on and catch the wood and push it through make life nice and easy for you and nice and safe so you get to keep your fingers. For the bolts I am using 3/4" threaded rod so I've drilled the hole there but I haven’t gone all the way through what I'm going to do is just use the point of the forstner bit and just to finish all the way through and then I'm going to come at it from the other side with a bigger forstner bit which is going to mount the bolt that will bind these 2 together Now I’ve drilled out the holes so what were going to do just get our threaded rod with the bolt on the end and drop it through and you can see it just sits a little bit larger than the hole so all we will do is trace around it. Using a really sharp chisel I'm just going to go around and widen this hole. I'm just going to use my trusty little Veritas low angle block plane and I'm just going to take the corners off all the inside bits on the vise just like in case there is a little bit of racking or something like that when I clamp the vise I'm not going to get dents in my wood. For the handles what I've done is got the treaded rod and a friend to weld the nut on to the end of it so we can use that the same as we did in the back of the vise so I will just chisel it out and this will become the handle. So I cut these out with the saw and then just did a bit of shaping on the disk sander so up with a just a nice simple shape that I like I've just drilled a 3/4" hole here for a piece of dowel which will suit as our handle. Okay now all we got to do is epoxy the threaded rod into that so what I normally do is get some kitchen grease proof paper this is also handy if you want to wrap it around the bars on your clamps and things like that when your gluing up to stop mess its good you know does not stick to anything so glue come off easy its cheap to get rid of so all you do is you just you have a A and B part you mic these 2 together in equal parts I've gone for the 5 minute quick epoxy as well quick stir Okay now I'm just going to apply a little bit of finish I wasn't going to go to crazy with it what I was going to use was some of this Woodsheen which is just a mixture of I think its beeswax and Tung oil just gives nice sort of lustre and I think it will look good on the front of the vise obviously you don't put anything on the inside of the vise because you don't want that transfer to your wood WOW that looks pretty good. Don't forget check us out on Facebook Google+ twitter anything like that follow the links down below I hope I've done enough to earn your subscription so and please send me comments I love it you make one of these love to see the photos feel free to post them on any of our social network pages. ------------------- Follow Me: Facebook: www.facebook.com/onewoodtools Google+: https://plus.google.com/+OneWoodAuwoodworking Twitter: https://twitter.com/onewoodtools LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/one-wood-tools

DIY Vanity Dresser Part 2 - Building & Installing Drawers

07:18
Part 2 of this DIY Vanity Dresser build will focus on building the drawers for the base units. After thinking about the type of joinery for the drawers, I decided to use dowels. I wanted something that would lend a bit of individuality to the piece. I measured for the dowels to be equally spaced apart from each other. I did not measure and mark the vertical plane however. I did that because I purposely did not want the dowels to be exactly in line with each other. I feel it gives it a more hand crafted feel. I liked the look so much that I will probably incorporate dowels in other aspects of the design going forward. Hope you enjoy the project as much as I have. I would also like to announce the launch of my second YouTube Channel called Simply Easy Homesteading: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7oJg7WOR8xk-qsQRmZbfLQ If you enjoy the video format I feature here on my main channel along with my sometimes quirky sense of humor and you like all things DIY. KITCHEN ORGANIZATION | Drawer hack for food storage containers & more!

02:28
In this quick-tip video I share an easy and cheap kitchen storage idea. You can use use a simple pegboard and dowel pegs from your hardware store to create custom and organized drawer storage in your kitchen. In my experience, this has been the best way to store food storage containers or tupperware. It can be used in so many areas of you home, too. Use it to store dishes, plates, bowls, paper products in a shipping drawer. The options are endless! SUPPLIES: 1/4" Dowel Pegs (You can buy these in dowel rods and cut down for longer support) 2' x 4' Pegboard. Purchase in medium thickness (they do come in larger sizes if you are doing multiple drawers). Double up and use two boards per drawer to help hold the pegs in place. Total cost: UNDER $10! Pegs $1.98 Pegboard $7.49 a sheet Image credits/pegboard drawers featured: http://amzn.to/2ogMJru http://amzn.to/2nBgrnU http://amzn.to/2ogMVHe http://bit.ly/2nQIT7j http://bit.ly/2omXMMC 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 FAMILY VLOG CHANNEL: http://youtube.com/doitonadimefamily 📝 BLOG: http://www.doitonadimeblog.com/ 👻 SNAPCHAT: doitonadime 📘 FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/DoItOnADime 📸 INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/doitonadime/ 🐤 TWITTER: https://twitter.com/DoItOnADimeLife 📌 PINTEREST: http://www.pinterest.com/doitonadime/ Write me at: Kathryn "Doitonadime" P.O. Chip's hair provides for a 2" overhang, thwarting some rain and discouraging predators. The ear holes measure 3/8" and are angled downward towards the outside to provide for a little ventilation on hot days. There are 4 drain holes on the bottom to evacuate any water that does enter. All hardware is weather resistant (zinc/galv). The rear panel of the bird house is removable for cleaning access. Thank you very much to +Brian Gidney of +Summers Woodworking for hosting this contest and handling all of the logistics it entails. And a huge thanks also to all of those who donated prizes to the cause. It was awesome of each one of you! Woods used: Most of the project is made of cedar. The balls are hard maple. All joint dowels are oak. Fingers are poplar. Eyes are Gaboon ebony. Ears are walnut. The belt buckle is wenge. And the belt and interchangeable mouths are mahogany with pine mounting dowels. Thank you very much for watching! Please take a moment to rate, comment and share this video. Be sure to SUBSCRIBE for lots more awesome woodworking videos. Have a wonderful day! Edit: This project won the "Most outrageous design" category! Thank you to +Brian Gidney of Summers Woodworking for making the contest happen. And thank you to all the generous donors who provided prizes. A special thanks to +Charles Dearing for providing the incredible scroll sawn prize I won! Biscuit Joiner, Why Biscuits Telegraph & How to Avoid Biscuit Telegraphing

04:12
Using a biscuit joiner and biscuits is a great way to join multiple pieces of lumber so the boards are aligned during glue up...this is a big time saver.  One issue that can arise if a biscuit isn't placed properly is called "telegraphing", which means that a biscuit can contract over time and pull the surface wood down with it creating a slight depression, or indent in the surface.  Here are some simple tips on using a biscuit joiner and how to prevent telegraphing. Cute Miniature Log Cabin - Dollhouse Tutorial

06:50
Hi guys! Today we're making a cute, miniature log cabin doll house :) This is kindda like my previous dollhouses ( Japanese Tea House & Beach House ) but with simpler construction, which makes is easier and quicker to make :) It's all made from round sticks and popsicle sticks ^^ I worked in 1:24 scale in this video, but you can make this to work for any scale / doll – just make it tall enough for the doll to enter the door, before you start the roof construction. I focused on the outside of the house for this video, but you can just glue it to a base for the floor and decorate the inside however you like ^^ Good to know: I mostly work in 1:12 scale, but you can make them in any size you want and add headpins to make them charms :) I used a mix of the polymer clay brands Fimo and Cernit, but you can use any brand you like. The liquid clay I use is from the brand Fimo. My mold maker is from Siligum/Sili-put. Thank you so much for watching, I hope you enjoyed this video ^^ You might also like: Miniature Dollhouse for Dolls; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcfNHTMVyuw Miniature Japanese Tea house; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxBOdyprjHo Miniature Japanese Garden; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67dayZ-et_8 Instagram @akamerukawaii Music: "Antarctica" Jason Shaw (www.audionautix.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Get four 6-footers. - Shaker candle stand base kit, for legs and table base - Piece of plywood, used for jig - Wood glue, to glue boards together for tabletop - Antique wood finish Tools for How to Build a Shaker Table: - Router, to cut tabletop - Straight bit, for router - Roundover bit, for router - Power sander, to smooth tabletop - Miter saw, to cut maple to length - Clamps, to keep wood together during drying process - Tape measure - Hammer, to create pilot hole - Power drill, to drill in screw for jig - Mallet, for assembly Steps for How to Build a Shaker Table: 1. Measure and cut seven 1x4 pieces of maple to 2-foot length. 2. Put wood glue on the side of each piece and glue them together. 3. Clamp the pieces together, put the assembly on raised blocks and wait several hours for the glue to dry. 4. Once the board assembly is dry, sand it down flat using the sander. 5. Find center of the board assembly by measuring both sides and put a small nail hole in the center. 6. The tabletop should be 22 inches around with an 11-inch radius. Make a piece of plywood into a jig by placing a screw 11 inches from a hole made by the router bit. 7. Line up the screw in the jig to the hole made in the center of the board and drill it in securely, but loose enough so the jig is able to spin around the board. 8. Use the straight bit in the router and fit it into the template hole in the jig. 9. Start the router and spin the jig around the board. Make three slow passes around the board to avoid any splintering. 10. Smooth over the edges of the tabletop with the router using the roundover bit. 11. Sand down the tabletop, base, and legs. 12. Finish all the pieces using an antique oil and rag. Put on several coats. Be sure to rinse all the rags in a bucket of water to avoid spontaneous combustion. 13. Screw the wooden bracket from the kit to the underside of the tabletop. Be sure to place the wooden bracket perpendicular to the wood grain to prevent it from curving. 14. Attach the legs to the base easily by inserting the flange screws into slots on the legs and hammering them in. 15. Cover the dowel of the leg base with wood glue and attach it to the underside of the tabletop. 16. Tap it down with a mallet to secure.
