Cancer metastasis, or Stage IV cancer, is especially difficult to treat due to significant genetic changes from the primary tumor that may increase a tumor cell’s ability to avoid death and acquire drug resistance. Previously, a solution extracted from Taro has been shown to inhibit the growth of triple-negative breast cancer metastasis in mice with few off-target side effects. Furthermore, the compound has been shown to be anti-inflammatory, which may aid therapeutic combinations with immunotherapy. Current compounds in use for metastatic cancer include Herceptin and Vemurafenib, at a cost of $4500 and $13000 per month, for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer and melanoma respectively. Immunotherapy, such as pembrolizumab, is also being tested as a treatment option. However, our product can be extracted and produced at a much lower cost, as it is isolated from a pre-existing natural source. Our company’s hope is that by initially working with local angel investors—such as Camden Partners and Baltimore Angels—and through the NIH’s Small Business Innovation Research grants, we will purify the specific compound responsible for inhibiting metastasis. Local lab spaces at UMB Biopark and Baltimore Underground Science Space can be rented as a common workspace and supplied with the equipment needed to identify the therapeutic. Ultimately, we will have isolated a novel chemotherapeutic that can be tested in Phase 1 clinical trials, to control breast cancer metastasis for the estimated 10,000 patients per year initially diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer and the additional 20-30% of patients who relapse with metastatic breast cancer in the United States alone.

Finally Boris explains why medical massage is the best methodology in fighting diseases in the abdominal cavity and how it helps to eliminate these problems; direct elimination of venous blood stasis and reduction of lymphedema, which is the main condition to start the healing process. Boris explains why abdominal/visceral massage is the only method that directly and in short period of time, allows one to achieve desired results. After this brief theoretical introduction, Boris proceeds with his protocol of abdominal/visceral massage that positively affects the internal organs. Among others, these techniques include petrissage, superficial fascia release, deep fascia release techniques, and skin mobilization. Boris's hands-on demonstration is very detailed, easy to follow and learn. Medical massage is not a remedy for all diseases but it is a powerful methodology that must be incorporated in the treatments of many diseases, and especially when treating diseases within the abdominal cavity. Between 30 to 35% of the left atria output is providing blood supply to the abdominal cavity. The same amount of venous blood has to be drained. Stress negatively affects the functions of all of the body's organs and systems, including but not limited to natural venous blood drainage in the abdominal cavity. In case drainage is disturbed, much of the venous blood is accumulated. This abnormal state is called STASIS of the venous blood. Stasis automatically disturbs the arterial blood supply. Once this blood supply is compromised, a negative snowball effect occurs, including inflammations within the abdominal cavity and various functional abnormalities such as diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, infertility, PMS, prostatitis or pre-existing pathological conditions may worsen. In addition, venous stasis causes acid reflux disease. The lower esophageal sphincter is a valve that separates the stomach. Under normal circumstances it closes once food passes through this valve. However, due to venous stasis, lymphedemas, etc., this valve does not close entirely or opens up frequently. Therefore stomach acids move to and through the sphincter. Besides disturbing the metabolic process within the abdominal cavity, venous blood stasis also fails to prevent bacterial infections from accumulating in the abdominal cavity. For example, secondary to gastritis, venous stasis often leads to the development of bacterial infections and causes stomach ulcers. In some cases this chronic inflammatory condition can also trigger cancer development within the abdominal cavity. Note: A non-septic inflammation is the body's attempt to overcome an insufficiency of the arterial blood supply. In this case the body reacts by producing acute inflammation. If the compromised amount of blood supply will be not restored, this inflammation gradually becomes chronic. As a part of chronic inflammation, adhesions will often develop and the organs' dysfunction will worsen. Abdominal/visceral massage is the most powerful methodology in addressing venous blood stasis, reducing lymphedema, which promotes arterial blood supply. This is a direct therapeutic technique to eliminate the inflammatory diseases described above. This includes the restoration of lower esophageal sphincter function and the elimination of its symptoms, preventing stomach acids from moving to and through the sphincter. By achieving the above-mentioned goals, we improve the functions of the inner organs, including tension reduction within the smooth muscles of abdominal structures, and the resulting reduction of abdominal and lower back pain. Importantly, we are also restoring functions of the affected organs and systems. Abdominal/visceral massage contributes to stress management, but full-body stress management massage should be considered in order to maintain an improved health condition.

What is Lymph Stagnation?

If doctors understood the subject they would have a lot better results with their patients. A properly flowing lymph is essential for a speedy and effective immune response. A stagnant or congested lymph spells trouble, in direct proportion to the amount of stagnation present. The fluid between every cell of your body becomes lymph fluid as it enters your lymphatic vessels. Waste products of metabolism that are too large to put into your blood and breathe out are transported via your lymph to your liver for processing. The greater the amount of wear and tear you are under, from any source, the more trash must be hauled out through this system. Your lymph fluid flows towards two main thoracic ducts (about the size of garden hoses) on either side of your spine between your shoulders. A sluggish and stagnant lymph system is marked by a variety of symptoms related to the pressure build up in this area of your body, a type of internal "constipation." Your lymph circulation does not have its own pump. In comparison, your heart pumps your blood. Rather, it runs primarily on muscle contractions that massage it along. Immediately you can see that inactivity and loss of muscle tone are major problems for healthy lymph flow. The classic symptoms of lymph stagnation involve stiffness and pressure in your shoulder area. This is a location where muscles (stress tension), nerve-related stress (brain stem excitation - such as anxiety, stress overload, or pain), and the thoracic ducts of your lymph system all converge (they all cross-talk with inflammatory cytokines). A problem in any one of these systems causes problems to the others. A history of whiplash injury can severely handicap lymph function due to the injured tissue. Even once the injured tissue heals the lymph congestion may remain. Part of true fibromyalgia always involves significantly impaired lymph function in the shoulder area; causing trash to back up in muscles and make them hurt. Your lymph system is a pressure system. When it is stagnant in the main shoulder area it forces pressure and waste products up into your head. This can cause headaches that start in the back of your neck and work their way up. It can cause pressure type headaches on the top of your head or behind your sinuses. It causes you to make excess mucous following a meal, as a way to discharge waste that cannot make it through the normal lymph channels. It causes you to have excess mucous in the morning, a plan B for getting rid of excess trash that could not be processed normally. It often results in ongoing sinus problems, as fluid in your head must drain down through your lymph system and if it is sluggish in the shoulder area then you head fluids also are at risk for becoming stagnant. A stagnant lymph is responsible for repeat ear infections in children, as the back up of fluid in the eustachian tubes of the ears becomes a breeding ground for infection. Because your lymph system likes to do house cleaning at night, if you have problems, the thoracic ducts will swell while you are sleeping (an overworked trash removal system) and press on nerves that go to your hands and arms (and to a lesser extent your legs and face). Compression on these nerves may cause your hand or arm to fall asleep while you are sleeping. Many people notice they have such a problem every now and then, which invariably is associated with a flare up of lymph troubles due to wear and tear overload. Those who have this problem more often than not have significant lymph stagnation. Because your lymph system is a pressure system if it is stagnant you will be more susceptible to changes in environmental pressure. Those who feel worse when a weather front comes through or following an airplane ride often have a baseline of lymph sluggishness. Even the gravitational pull of a full moon or a new moon can adversely influence a congested lymph system and cause symptoms of stagnation. Your lymph system also has the duty of absorbing and transporting most of the dietary fat you consume. Day 1 - Appropriate Use of Drug Therapies for Osteoporotic Fracture Prevention
More than 10 million people in the United States have osteoporosis, a skeletal disorder that causes bones to become weak and fragile as a result of low bone mass. The condition makes people more susceptible to fractures, which can impair their ability to live independently and even threaten their lives. The social and economic burden of osteoporotic fractures is substantial. Reducing osteoporosis prevalence and hip fracture incidence are among the major objectives of Healthy People 2020, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ national health promotion and disease prevention initiative. Lifestyle changes—including getting adequate nutrition and regular exercise, quitting tobacco use, limiting alcohol use, and preventing falls—can help reduce a person’s risk of osteoporotic fractures. However, medications may be prescribed to prevent fractures if a person has very low bone mineral density or has experienced a prior fragility fracture. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved several types of drugs to prevent osteoporotic fractures. Clinical guidelines by various medical organizations recommend bisphosphonates (BPs) as a first line of treatment for most people who have osteoporosis. BPs are effective for short-term use (up to 3–5 years) by people who are at high risk of fracture. However, the benefits and risks of longer-term treatment are less clear. Reports of rare but serious adverse events such as atypical femoral fractures and osteonecrosis (death of cells) of the jaw have raised questions about the safety of osteoporosis drug use, especially in people who use the drugs for more than 3–5 years or who had a low risk of fracture when they began treatment. Research Challenges There is a gap in scientific data about the appropriate long-term use of many osteoporosis drugs. There are uncertainties about which people will benefit or may be harmed if they take the drugs long-term. Public concern about these and other unanswered questions has coincided with a significant decrease in use of osteoporosis drugs and a leveling off in what had been a promising decline in the incidence of osteoporotic fractures. These changes have raised concerns within medical and professional communities that many people who might need the drugs are not being prescribed them, and those who are prescribed them are not taking them. In addition, evidence is limited regarding the initiation and length of “drug holidays” (a medical practice in which a patient stops taking medications for a period of time and then resumes treatment again, if the patient or their doctor believes it could be in their best interests), whether stopping treatment reduces the risk of serious adverse events while maintaining fracture prevention benefit, and which individuals should change treatments instead of simply taking a drug holiday from their current medication. Innovative research strategies are needed to address these knowledge gaps and to help better inform individuals and physicians in their decision-making about osteoporosis treatment. Workshop Goals This P2P workshop will assess the available scientific evidence to better understand the appropriate use of drugs for osteoporotic fracture prevention, specifically addressing the following questions: What are the benefits and risks (including major adverse events) of osteoporotic drugs with short-term use (from first-use up to 3–5 years of treatment)?
