Growths, neoplasms, and cancers of the skin

22:16
In this video, we will be differentiating between harmless growths and benign and malignant neoplasms of the skin. I created this presentation with Google Slides. Images were created or taken from Wikimedia Commons I created this video with the YouTube Video Editor. ADDITIONAL TAGS Angioma AKA cherry angioma Presents as red papule Acrochordons (skin tags) Fleshy growths of skin, with blood supply, can be skin colored or brown Common in armpit, groin, eyes, and neck Seborrheic keratosis Benign superficial growth Epi: common after 30 yo, all skin except soles/palms, often more than one Don’t go away but are harmless Often dark and pigmented, but can be tan or hypopigmented, esp on darker skin Characteristic “stuck on” appearance, waxy or oily Lipoma Benign tumor of fat tissue Epidermal inclusion cyst AKA EIC, epidermoid cyst, sebaceous cyst Benign cyst usually found on skin, made of thin layer of squamous epithelium Caused by implantation of epidermis into dermis, often from trauma → debris like dead skin, oil then collect within cyst → can produce Pilar cyst Dermatofibroma Keloid Solar lentigo AKA sun spot, age spot, liver spot Basal cell carcinoma Epi: most common skin cancer, common in head/neck Often presents as pearly pink papules… can vary (see morphologies) Risk factors: sun exposure, fair skin, xeroderma pigmentosum Diagnose with shave biopsy before excision Originate from keratinocytes, basal layer → UV light damages DNA Notable UV-induced mutation: PTCH (tumor suppressor gene) Various morphologies: Nodular - pearly papule/nodule, often telangiectasias. Often on head and neck. Superficial - pink/translucent color, often telangiectasias in patch or thin plaque Can also be pigmented (resembles melanoma), ulcerated, or any combination Treat: curette and desiccation, cryosurgery, excise surgery, MMS Non surgical alternative: imiquimod/5-FU creams, radiation Actinic keratosis Scaly plaques, often on forehead/face, rough/gritty texture on touch Premalignant, sometimes progress to PCC Risk factors: fair skin, age, genetics/fam hx, immunosuppression, sun exposed surfaces When on the lip = actinic cheilosis Squamous cell carcinoma More prevalent in fair skin exposed to sun Higher mortality than BCC, lower than melanoma Rate of metastasis to lymph nodes = 5% Originates in keratinocytes Notable UV-induced mutation: p53 (tumor suppressor gene) Risk factors: sun exposure, fair skin, xeroderma pigmentosum, arsenic poisoning Morphologies: scales, pink/red/skin-colored, papule/plaque/nodule, exophytic/indurated, horn, friable, puritic SCC in situ → Bowen’s dz Congenital nevi AKA congenital melanocytic nevus, congenital mole Melanocytic nevus found starting at birth Often dome shaped, especially on the face Sometimes mammillated, sometimes increased hair density/coarseness Acquired nevi AKA acquired mole Melanocytic growth acquired after birth Usually appears before age 20, more commonly in sun exposed areas Over time, nevi change from brown macules and papules to pink/skin colored papules while diameter stays constant Dysplastic nevus syndrome AKA atypical mole syndrome (AMS), familial atypical multiple mole-melanoma (FAMMM) syndrome), B-K mole syndrome Disorder characterized by unusual nevi and increased risk of or multiple inherited melanomas nevi, usually appearing near puberty but continues into older age Melanoma AKA malignant melanoma Cancer that develops from pigment-containing melanocytes most commonly in the epidermis but also in the mouth, intestines, or eye Usually present asymptomatically -- appear as pigmented papules, plaques, or nodules Any or all of the ABCDEs… patients often report change May also crust, bleed, erode Can develop from preexisting nevus or de novo, usually in sun exposed areas Originates in melanocytes Etiology: exposure to UVB (and/or UVA) radiation from prolonged/cumulative sun exposure; can also be sporadic Epi: affects all ages, lifetime risk has increased over time Risk factors: immunosuppression, personal/fam hx, UV exposure, tanning booth use, fair skin/hair/eyes, old age, many acquired nevi CDKN2A, CDK4, p53, BRCA2 are notable genes involved Prognostic factor: Breslow depth (thickness, to deepest part of tumor) is most important High cure rates when detected early Subtypes Superficial: spreads horizontally rather than down; most common type Lentigo maligna: primarily slow horizontal spread, occurs on sun damaged skin and in elderly Nodular: rapid vertical growth → poor prognosis Acral lentiginous: common in darker skin, so diagnosis often delayed Amelanotic: variable appearance, often confused with other conditions, so difficult to diagnose Treatment: surgical excision (+/- biopsy), ipilimumab (anti-CTLA-4 to stimulate immune rxn to melanoma), BRAF inhibitors (vemurafenib, dabrafenib), follow up/sun protection for life

FCSC - Alimore Biotechnologies - Elevator Pitch #1

01:50
Alimore Biotechnologies is committed to developing prognostic and therapeutic technologies to improve the survival and quality of life for those diagnosed with late-stage cancers. Cancer metastasis, or Stage IV cancer, is especially difficult to treat due to significant genetic changes from the primary tumor that may increase a tumor cell’s ability to avoid death and acquire drug resistance. Previously, a solution extracted from Taro has been shown to inhibit the growth of triple-negative breast cancer metastasis in mice with few off-target side effects. Furthermore, the compound has been shown to be anti-inflammatory, which may aid therapeutic combinations with immunotherapy. Current compounds in use for metastatic cancer include Herceptin and Vemurafenib, at a cost of $4500 and $13000 per month, for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer and melanoma respectively. Immunotherapy, such as pembrolizumab, is also being tested as a treatment option. However, our product can be extracted and produced at a much lower cost, as it is isolated from a pre-existing natural source. Our company’s hope is that by initially working with local angel investors—such as Camden Partners and Baltimore Angels—and through the NIH’s Small Business Innovation Research grants, we will purify the specific compound responsible for inhibiting metastasis. Local lab spaces at UMB Biopark and Baltimore Underground Science Space can be rented as a common workspace and supplied with the equipment needed to identify the therapeutic. Ultimately, we will have isolated a novel chemotherapeutic that can be tested in Phase 1 clinical trials, to control breast cancer metastasis for the estimated 10,000 patients per year initially diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer and the additional 20-30% of patients who relapse with metastatic breast cancer in the United States alone.

Abdominal/Visceral Massage Steps 10, 11 and 12

06:51
http://medicalmassage-edu.com Materials presented in this video can directly improve your ability to help clients who suffers from diseases indigenes to abdominal cavity such as Chron's disease, gastric ulcers, gastro intestinal track diseases, colitis, constipation, irregularity and insufficiency of bowel movement, diverticulitis, acid reflux diseases, Irritable bowel syndrome and more. In the video Boris explains the difference between a normal physiological process within the abdominal cavity to a process affected by venous stasis, which is the cause of disorders in the abdominal cavity. Boris further explains how stress causes venous stasis and which problems it gives to organs and systems. Finally Boris explains why medical massage is the best methodology in fighting diseases in the abdominal cavity and how it helps to eliminate these problems; direct elimination of venous blood stasis and reduction of lymphedema, which is the main condition to start the healing process. Boris explains why abdominal/visceral massage is the only method that directly and in short period of time, allows one to achieve desired results. After this brief theoretical introduction, Boris proceeds with his protocol of abdominal/visceral massage that positively affects the internal organs. Among others, these techniques include petrissage, superficial fascia release, deep fascia release techniques, and skin mobilization. Boris's hands-on demonstration is very detailed, easy to follow and learn. Medical massage is not a remedy for all diseases but it is a powerful methodology that must be incorporated in the treatments of many diseases, and especially when treating diseases within the abdominal cavity. Between 30 to 35% of the left atria output is providing blood supply to the abdominal cavity. The same amount of venous blood has to be drained. Stress negatively affects the functions of all of the body's organs and systems, including but not limited to natural venous blood drainage in the abdominal cavity. In case drainage is disturbed, much of the venous blood is accumulated. This abnormal state is called STASIS of the venous blood. Stasis automatically disturbs the arterial blood supply. Once this blood supply is compromised, a negative snowball effect occurs, including inflammations within the abdominal cavity and various functional abnormalities such as diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, infertility, PMS, prostatitis or pre-existing pathological conditions may worsen. In addition, venous stasis causes acid reflux disease. The lower esophageal sphincter is a valve that separates the stomach. Under normal circumstances it closes once food passes through this valve. However, due to venous stasis, lymphedemas, etc., this valve does not close entirely or opens up frequently. Therefore stomach acids move to and through the sphincter. Besides disturbing the metabolic process within the abdominal cavity, venous blood stasis also fails to prevent bacterial infections from accumulating in the abdominal cavity. For example, secondary to gastritis, venous stasis often leads to the development of bacterial infections and causes stomach ulcers. In some cases this chronic inflammatory condition can also trigger cancer development within the abdominal cavity. Note: A non-septic inflammation is the body's attempt to overcome an insufficiency of the arterial blood supply. In this case the body reacts by producing acute inflammation. If the compromised amount of blood supply will be not restored, this inflammation gradually becomes chronic. As a part of chronic inflammation, adhesions will often develop and the organs' dysfunction will worsen. Abdominal/visceral massage is the most powerful methodology in addressing venous blood stasis, reducing lymphedema, which promotes arterial blood supply. This is a direct therapeutic technique to eliminate the inflammatory diseases described above. This includes the restoration of lower esophageal sphincter function and the elimination of its symptoms, preventing stomach acids from moving to and through the sphincter. By achieving the above-mentioned goals, we improve the functions of the inner organs, including tension reduction within the smooth muscles of abdominal structures, and the resulting reduction of abdominal and lower back pain. Importantly, we are also restoring functions of the affected organs and systems. Abdominal/visceral massage contributes to stress management, but full-body stress management massage should be considered in order to maintain an improved health condition.

What is Lymph Stagnation?

15:29
http://www.balancedhealthtoday.com/Lymplex.html http://www.balancedhealthtoday.com/store/lymplex.html Yes, I know, this is not a common medical term. It should be. If doctors understood the subject they would have a lot better results with their patients. A properly flowing lymph is essential for a speedy and effective immune response. A stagnant or congested lymph spells trouble, in direct proportion to the amount of stagnation present. The fluid between every cell of your body becomes lymph fluid as it enters your lymphatic vessels. Waste products of metabolism that are too large to put into your blood and breathe out are transported via your lymph to your liver for processing. The greater the amount of wear and tear you are under, from any source, the more trash must be hauled out through this system. Your lymph fluid flows towards two main thoracic ducts (about the size of garden hoses) on either side of your spine between your shoulders. A sluggish and stagnant lymph system is marked by a variety of symptoms related to the pressure build up in this area of your body, a type of internal "constipation." Your lymph circulation does not have its own pump. In comparison, your heart pumps your blood. Rather, it runs primarily on muscle contractions that massage it along. Immediately you can see that inactivity and loss of muscle tone are major problems for healthy lymph flow. The classic symptoms of lymph stagnation involve stiffness and pressure in your shoulder area. This is a location where muscles (stress tension), nerve-related stress (brain stem excitation - such as anxiety, stress overload, or pain), and the thoracic ducts of your lymph system all converge (they all cross-talk with inflammatory cytokines). A problem in any one of these systems causes problems to the others. A history of whiplash injury can severely handicap lymph function due to the injured tissue. Even once the injured tissue heals the lymph congestion may remain. Part of true fibromyalgia always involves significantly impaired lymph function in the shoulder area; causing trash to back up in muscles and make them hurt. Your lymph system is a pressure system. When it is stagnant in the main shoulder area it forces pressure and waste products up into your head. This can cause headaches that start in the back of your neck and work their way up. It can cause pressure type headaches on the top of your head or behind your sinuses. It causes you to make excess mucous following a meal, as a way to discharge waste that cannot make it through the normal lymph channels. It causes you to have excess mucous in the morning, a plan B for getting rid of excess trash that could not be processed normally. It often results in ongoing sinus problems, as fluid in your head must drain down through your lymph system and if it is sluggish in the shoulder area then you head fluids also are at risk for becoming stagnant. A stagnant lymph is responsible for repeat ear infections in children, as the back up of fluid in the eustachian tubes of the ears becomes a breeding ground for infection. Because your lymph system likes to do house cleaning at night, if you have problems, the thoracic ducts will swell while you are sleeping (an overworked trash removal system) and press on nerves that go to your hands and arms (and to a lesser extent your legs and face). Compression on these nerves may cause your hand or arm to fall asleep while you are sleeping. Many people notice they have such a problem every now and then, which invariably is associated with a flare up of lymph troubles due to wear and tear overload. Those who have this problem more often than not have significant lymph stagnation. Because your lymph system is a pressure system if it is stagnant you will be more susceptible to changes in environmental pressure. Those who feel worse when a weather front comes through or following an airplane ride often have a baseline of lymph sluggishness. Even the gravitational pull of a full moon or a new moon can adversely influence a congested lymph system and cause symptoms of stagnation. Your lymph system also has the duty of absorbing and transporting most of the dietary fat you consume. Thus, high fat meals in someone with pre-existing lymph stagnation or a high fat meal before bed will have a high likelihood of severely slowing down lymph flow, and thus be highly immunosuppressive if you need to fight an infection (in addition to provoking snoring or sleep apnea). http://www.balancedhealthtoday.com/store http://balancedhealthtoday.com/products.html

Apple Juice – Benefits, How to Make & Nutritional Value

07:44
Apple Juice – Benefits, How to Make & Nutritional Value Apple juice is one of the most popular and widely available fruit juices in the world due to its impressive health benefits and dense nutritional value. What is Apple Juice? By definition, this juice is made through the pressing of apples, of which there are hundreds of varieties in the world. McIntosh apples are some of the most common types of apples used to create this delicious juice, particularly in the west, although China is the largest producer of apples in the world. It takes two medium-sized apples to make one cup of apple juice, which is why these fruits are grown in such huge numbers. After the apples are pressed, most juices are further filtered or pasteurized, which helps to remove any particulate matter, resulting in a thinner consistency of the final juice. Apple cider, which is often confused with apple juice, is the unfiltered and unpasteurized liquid initially pressed from apples, in addition to being fermented. That being said, too much apple juice can cause gastrointestinal problems, ranging from diarrhea to constipation, as well as excessive flatulence and a higher risk of kidney stones. This is due to the presence of oxalates, which may exacerbate pre-existing kidney problems. With a relatively high sugar content, it is important to drink apple juice in moderation, particularly diabetic patients, but 1-2 glasses per day can deliver some great health benefits. Benefits of Apple Juice The many excellent health benefits of apple juice include improving digestion, lowering blood pressure, preventing cancer, detoxifying the body, increasing hydration, stimulating the immune system, aiding cognition, strengthening the metabolism, helping with weight loss and supporting respiratory health. Boosts Immunity Apple juice has a notable amount of vitamin C, which is a key component of the body’s immune system. Vitamin C not only stimulates the immune system, but also functions as an antioxidant compound that can prevent oxidative stress and reduce inflammation. Prevents Cancer The polyphenolic compounds, procyanids and quercetin present in apple juice are extremely powerful antioxidants that can help the body fight the effects of free radicals. By eliminating oxidative stress, apple juice has been shown in numerous studies to lower the risk of colon, breast and skin cancer. Regulates Blood Pressure Potassium is found in higher concentrations than any other mineral in apple juice, which is good news for your heart health. Potassium is a vasodilator, which means it can help to lower tension in your arteries and blood vessels, relieving pressure and strain on the cardiovascular system as a whole. Promotes Weight Loss The low levels of fiber and the dense nutrient content of apple juice make it quite filling, along with its high water content. This can help to reduce your appetite and release satiety hormones in the body (leptin), thus preventing overeating and helping with weight-loss goals. Improves Hydration As mentioned earlier, apple juice is very high in water, so not only are you getting a burst of excellent nutrients, but also a refreshing dash of water into your diet. This can help everything from kidney function and cognition to toxicity levels and energy. Treats Alzheimer’s Antioxidants do more than protect against cancer; they also prevent oxidative stress in other parts of the body, such as the brain. Studies have shown that the antioxidants present in this fruit juice can lower your risk of neurological disease, particularly Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and dementia. Aids Digestion One of the lesser known substances in apples is called malic acid, which can improve the digestive rate and support liver function. In combination with fiber and other stimulating minerals in apple juice, this juice can quickly relieve symptoms of constipation, cramping, bloating and diarrhea. Boosts Metabolism Long-term research has linked the consumption of apple juice with smaller waistlines, lower levels of body fat, lower cholesterol levels, lesser chance of developing diabetes and lower blood pressure, all of which are risk factors known as metabolic syndrome. For this reason, apple juice can help optimize your metabolism and protect your heart. Detoxifies the Body As mentioned, malic acid can improve liver function, which will speed the process of toxins being eliminated from the body. When combined with the large amount of water in this juice, this can stimulate urination and promote the release of more excess salts and fats that the body doesn’t need. Improves Respiratory Health There are certain anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic substances found in apple juice that can soothe the respiratory system and decrease irritation in the throat and lungs, helping to relieve asthma attacks and prevent respiratory infections.

Day 1 - Appropriate Use of Drug Therapies for Osteoporotic Fracture Prevention

07:37:22
More than 10 million people in the United States have osteoporosis, a skeletal disorder that causes bones to become weak and fragile as a result of low bone mass. The condition makes people more susceptible to fractures, which can impair their ability to live independently and even threaten their lives. The social and economic burden of osteoporotic fractures is substantial. Reducing osteoporosis prevalence and hip fracture incidence are among the major objectives of Healthy People 2020, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ national health promotion and disease prevention initiative. Lifestyle changes—including getting adequate nutrition and regular exercise, quitting tobacco use, limiting alcohol use, and preventing falls—can help reduce a person’s risk of osteoporotic fractures. However, medications may be prescribed to prevent fractures if a person has very low bone mineral density or has experienced a prior fragility fracture. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved several types of drugs to prevent osteoporotic fractures. Clinical guidelines by various medical organizations recommend bisphosphonates (BPs) as a first line of treatment for most people who have osteoporosis. BPs are effective for short-term use (up to 3–5 years) by people who are at high risk of fracture. However, the benefits and risks of longer-term treatment are less clear. Reports of rare but serious adverse events such as atypical femoral fractures and osteonecrosis (death of cells) of the jaw have raised questions about the safety of osteoporosis drug use, especially in people who use the drugs for more than 3–5 years or who had a low risk of fracture when they began treatment. Research Challenges There is a gap in scientific data about the appropriate long-term use of many osteoporosis drugs. There are uncertainties about which people will benefit or may be harmed if they take the drugs long-term. Public concern about these and other unanswered questions has coincided with a significant decrease in use of osteoporosis drugs and a leveling off in what had been a promising decline in the incidence of osteoporotic fractures. These changes have raised concerns within medical and professional communities that many people who might need the drugs are not being prescribed them, and those who are prescribed them are not taking them. In addition, evidence is limited regarding the initiation and length of “drug holidays” (a medical practice in which a patient stops taking medications for a period of time and then resumes treatment again, if the patient or their doctor believes it could be in their best interests), whether stopping treatment reduces the risk of serious adverse events while maintaining fracture prevention benefit, and which individuals should change treatments instead of simply taking a drug holiday from their current medication. Innovative research strategies are needed to address these knowledge gaps and to help better inform individuals and physicians in their decision-making about osteoporosis treatment. Workshop Goals This P2P workshop will assess the available scientific evidence to better understand the appropriate use of drugs for osteoporotic fracture prevention, specifically addressing the following questions: What are the benefits and risks (including major adverse events) of osteoporotic drugs with short-term use (from first-use up to 3–5 years of treatment)? What factors influence outcomes? What are the benefits and risks of osteoporotic drugs over the longer term (for treatment periods longer than 3–5 years)? What factors influence outcomes? Do drug holidays improve outcomes? What patient and clinician factors impact the use of and adherence to osteoporotic drugs? Workshop Sponsors National Institute on Aging National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases NIH Office of Disease Prevention

PETACH TIKVA, Israel, Sept. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Can-Fite BioPharma Ltd. (NYSE MKT: CANF) (CFBI.TA), a biotechnology company advancing a pipeline of proprietary small molecule drugs that address cancer and inflammatory diseases, today announced the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued a patent to the Company which covers its drug candidate, CF102, in the treatment of liver regeneration and function following liver surgery. The issued patent # 8,846,635 is titled, "Method for inducing hepatocyte proliferation and uses thereof." Can-Fite has recently been granted a patent for this technology in Japan and the European Union. CF102 is now entering Phase II trials for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common form of liver cancer in the U.S., Europe and Israel. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted Orphan Drug Status to Can-Fite's CF102 for this indication and Israel's Ministry of Health has approved CF102 for Compassionate Use in liver cancer. "The treatment of post-surgery liver function is an indication that would complement our current portfolio of indications in clinical trials. CF102 may offer important healing benefits for the liver not only to cancer patients, but also for patients who have other diseases or injuries of the liver," stated Can-Fite CEO Pnina Fishman. In preclinical studies, CF102 has induced proliferation of hepatocytes following liver resection (surgery), increased liver weight and reduced elevated levels of serum liver enzymes, reflecting improved liver status. In patients with preexisting liver diseases, such as cirrhosis or cancer, normal hepatocellular proliferation following injury is impaired, exposing patients to liver dysfunction and associated complications that can lead to liver failure and death. Can-Fite's intellectual property portfolio consists of 150 issued and pending patents worldwide. Additional patents relating to induction of hepatocyte proliferation and uses thereof are pending in several other markets, including Israel.

Research from Shamgar Ben-Eliyahu, PhD, a neuroscientist from Tel-Aviv University, shows the perioperative period is critical in determining long-term cancer outcomes. Animal studies have implicated perioperative release of catecholamines and prostaglandins in facilitating the progression of residual disease. This presentation discusses the results from the first clinical trial to test the combined perioperative blockade of these pathways in breast cancer patients, specifically employing the β-adrenergic antagonist, propranolol, and the COX-2 inhibitor, etodolac. http://cancercontrol.cancer.gov/brp
