How blueberries help to kill cancer cells Blueberries are sometimes branded a "superfood," and for good reason; they are packed full of antioxidants that offer a wealth of health benefits. Now, a new study has uncovered another use for these little berries: helping to treat cancer. By studying human cervical cancer cell lines, a team of researchers discovered that adding blueberry extract to radiation therapy can significantly improve treatment efficacy. Lead study author Dr. Yujiang Fang, who works in the School of Medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and colleagues recently reported their results in Pathology and Oncology Research. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), around 12,820 new cases of cervical cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year, and more than 4,200 women are expected to die from the disease. Radiation therapy remains a primary treatment for cervical cancer. It involves using high-energy radiation to destroy cancer cells.

Can blueberry fight breast cancer?

In health news, a recent study found that blueberries may reduce the risk of having breast cancer. According to the research conducted in New Zealand, a 50-percent lower incidence rate of mammary tumors was detected after including blueberries to the animals’ diet. Blueberries contain phytochemicals called anthocyanins, an antioxidant that helps decrease the chance of developing breast cancer. They help reduce free radicals in our system, decrease new blood vessel formation, and increase the number of beneficial bacteria – all elements which help in the fight against breast cancer. But researchers stressed that the study was done in an animal trial and the response to environment stress of each animal differ. They can’t still say that eating blueberries will prevent breast cancer in humans. Breast cancer is the third most common type of cancer-related death case for both genders. Among Emirati females, breast cancer was the most commonly diagnosed cancer in 2013. Regular screenings is one way of reducing reduce cancer-related deaths. Quercetin, Cancer Killers - The Most Effective Supplements For Killing Cancer! Quercetin occurs naturally in a variety of brightly colored plant-based foods. This flavonoid compound has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may help lower the risk of cancer and heart disease while decreasing blood pressure. A diet that includes plenty of foods with a high content of quercetin will also be rich in dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals and other antioxidant compounds. Stir in Capers According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, capers contain one of the highest natural concentrations of quercetin. Canned capers, which are the salt-brined flower buds of the Capparis spinosa plant, contain 173 milligrams of quercetin in every 3.5 ounces, or 14.8 milligrams in a typical 1-tablespoon serving. Use capers in salads, dips, pasta dishes and as a flavor-enhancing addition to sauces for seafood or poultry. Capers are high in sodium. To decrease their sodium content and control the saltiness they add to foods, rinse them thoroughly before using. Sprinkle on Onions All types of onions are high in quercetin. Raw red onions contain 33.4 milligrams of the compound in every 3.5 ounces, while raw white onions supply 21.4 milligrams, scallions have 18.3 milligrams and fresh sweet onions contain 14.8 milligrams. Cooked onions have 24.4 milligrams of the compound in each 3.5-ounce serving. To get the most quercetin out of your onions, use them promptly after purchase. Onions can lose more than 25 percent of their quercetin content if they're stored over a week. Fill Up on Fruit Fruits with a dark red or blue hue have the highest quercetin content. These include cranberries, which contain 15 milligrams in every 3.5 ounces; raw black plums, with 12.5 milligrams per serving; and blueberries, which have 5 milligrams. Chokeberries, black currants, apples and cherries are also good sources of quercetin. A 2002 article published in "Nutrition" reported that foods prepared by boiling lost a significant amount of quercetin due to contact with heat and water. Whenever possible, eat quercetin-rich fruits raw or only lightly cooked. Vary Your Veggies Raw hot green chile peppers have nearly 15 milligrams of quercetin in every 3.5 ounces. Red leaf lettuce contains 12 milligrams per serving, while raw kale has 7.7 milligrams and cooked asparagus 7.6 milligrams in a 3.5-ounce serving. Romaine lettuce, chicory greens, raw spinach, sweet peppers, snap beans and raw broccoli range in quercetin content from 2.4 to 5 milligrams contained in 3.5 ounces of the food. How Much Quercetin Do You Take for an Anti-inflammatory Response? Quercetin is a flavonoid antioxidant found in many fruits and vegetables. It serves a variety of important health effects and has been used successfully for its cholesterol-lowering, anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory benefits. Aside from dietary sources, you can obtain quercetin in supplement form and it can often be found in formulas together with other anti-inflammatory compounds, such as bromelain, grape seed and green tea. Consult your physician before taking any supplement. COPD Quercetin prevented progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, COPD, in a study conducted at the Department of Pediatrics and Communicable Diseases, University of Michigan. In the study, researchers gave laboratory animals 0.5 milligrams per day for 10 days and noted improved lung elasticity, decreased oxidation and decreased inflammation. Quercitin also decreased levels of tissue-damaging enzymes known as matrix metalloproteinases. The study was published in the September 2010 issue of the journal "Respiratory Research." Nitric Oxide Researchers at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Chungbuk National University, Korea, reported that quercetin doses of 10 milligrams per kilogram of body weight — which is a higher than normal for human use — produced anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory animals. Scientists administered the high dose of quercetin using a tube-feeding method called gavage once per day for three days, as a way to saturate the tissues. Quercetin exerted its effects, in part, by inhibiting nitric oxide production in white blood cells known as macrophages, reducing nitric oxide levels by half. The antioxidant also reduced the inflammatory response involving neutrophils, another type of white blood cell. Researchers concluded significant anti-inflammatory potential for quercetin in this preliminary animal study, published in the September 2008 issue of the "Journal of Veterinary Science." Prostate Inflammation Quercetin has been used to reduce inflammation in prostate conditons for its anti-inflammatory and anti-testosterone effects, according to Jeannette Potts, M.D., in her book "Genitourinary Pain and Inflammation: Diagnosis and Management." The antioxidant decreases levels of inflammatory prostaglandins and increases levels of prostatic endorphins — natural pain-relieving molecules.

Step 1: Pick some blackberries Pick up some blackberries; they contain twice the antioxidant content of blueberries. Strawberries, cranberries, and raspberries are cancer-fighters, too. Step 2: Spice up your life Curry lovers, rejoice! Turmeric, the spice that gives the popular Indian dish its yellow hue, inhibits the development of cancer. Ginger runs a close second, followed by cinnamon. Step 3: Eat your broccoli Eat your broccoli. It contains isothiocyanate, a compound that fights several cancers. While Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, and arugula also have ITCs, broccoli is king because it has a particularly potent kind called sulforaphane. Tip Broccoli sprouts have the highest concentration of sulforaphane. Step 4: Eat & drink your greens Munch on watercress and drink green tea. Both increase the amount of cancer-fighting antioxidants in your blood, and watercress protects your DNA from changes that can trigger cancer. Step 5: Enjoy asparagus Enjoy a bunch of asparagus; it contains the B vitamin folate, which may reduce the risk of several cancers. Other good sources of folate are orange juice, lentils, spinach, peanuts, and broccoli. Step 6: Go nuts Go nuts — as long as they're Brazil nuts. They contain selenium, which fights cancer cells. Go for the unshelled ones, which have more selenium. But limit yourself to one large or two small freshly-shelled nuts per day, as too much selenium is toxic. Tip Macadamia nuts contain almost as much selenium as Brazil nuts. Step 7: Order the fish Eat fish a few of times a week. An Italian study found that people who eat fish twice a week reduce their risk of developing several cancers by 30% to 50%. Go with Omega-3-rich fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel, and tuna. Step 8: Reek of garlic Indulge in garlicky foods. Fans of this pungent bulb have a lower risk of stomach and colon cancer because cooked garlic inhibits cancer cells from growing. Step 9: Don't fear fungus Consume more Asian mushrooms -- in lab tests, shitakes repressed cancer cell growth. Also try maitake, zhu ling, enoki, and red reishi mushrooms. Step 10: Eat an apple a day An apple a day may keep the oncologist away. Studies have found that when pulverized apple skins were placed in a petri dish with colon cancer cells, the cells' growth was inhibited by an impressive 43%. So don't peel before eating! Step 11: Fill up on flax Incorporate flaxseed into your diet. In a Canadian study, women diagnosed with breast cancer who ate a daily flaxseed muffin for 40 days showed a statistically significant reduction in the size of their tumor compared with a control group. TOP 5 Cancer-Fighting Foods You Should Be Eating Today: You may have heard the sad news over the weekend that Kara Kennedy, the oldest child of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy and mom of two teens, died at a health club at the age of 51. Apparently while Kara loved to exercise, aggressive treatment for lung cancer in 2003 took a toll on her health. Cancer runs in my family, so it's something I worry about myself. And while we know that genetics play a role and exercise lowers the risk, a healthy diet is a big piece of the prevention puzzle. Certain foods contain compounds that are known to inhibit the growth of cancer cells, which is important for preventing early cancer cells from growing, reducing the risk that existing cancer cells will spread, and preventing the recurrence of cancer. Here are the five most important habits you can start today to fight this disease: Eat at least 2 cups of fruit and 3 cups of vegetables every single day. Include fruit in every breakfast and snack meal and veggies at each lunch and dinner meal. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that a low intake of fruits and vegetable contributes to five to 12 percent of all cancers and up to 30 percent of upper gastrointestinal cancers that are otherwise preventable. That's pretty powerful. Eat more bean-based meals. In a Harvard study from the International Journal of Cancer 90,638 cancer free women between 26 and 46 years old were monitored for eight years. Those who ate beans or lentils two or more times per week had a 34 percent lower risk of breast cancer than women who ate them one or fewer times per month. Natural substances in beans appear to protect cells from damage that can lead to cancer. Serve them up in delicious ways, like a ginger stir fry with edamame, Moroccan lentil soup, vegetarian chili with red kidney beans, black bean tacos, and enjoy salads topped with marinated tofu. Mix it up. Eating a wider variety of plant-based foods exposes your body to a broader spectrum of antioxidants and other natural cancer fighters. To expand your nutrition horizons, aim for five different colored fruits and veggies every day (blueberries, leafy greens, orange carrots, red peppers, cauliflower, and yup, white counts as a color), use a variety of antioxidant rich herbs and spices to season your food (basil, garlic, ginger, cinnamon, etc.), and switch up your whole grains by alternating brown and wild rice or whole wheat pasta with barley, quinoa and whole corn. Drink green tea. The research on how powerful green tea is at preventing breast cancer is mixed, but one study found that among women under the age of 50, those who consumed three or more cups of green tea per day were 37 percent less likely to develop breast cancer compared to women who didn't drink tea. Green tea contains a number of antioxidants, and in laboratory studies it's been shown to slow or completely prevent cancer development in breast cells. Enjoy up to five cups of freshly brewed hot or iced tea, and if you need a sweetener add a splash of 100 percent fruit juice instead of sugar or the artificial stuff. Choose dark chocolate (70 percent or darker). It's rich in cancer-fighting antioxidants. In my newest book, I recommend taking a dark chocolate escape by enjoying a few individually wrapped tasting squares of dark chocolate every day. But you can also melt some dark chocolate chunks, fold in any spices you like (from fresh grated ginger to green tea leaves, cinnamon or chili powder) and use as a dip for fresh fruit. Leafy Green Vegetables Leafy greens are the cornerstone of any healthy diet since they’re exceptionally rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes, yet very low in calories, fats, sodium and other toxins. Leafy greens of all kinds — nutritious spinach, kale, collard greens, romaine, arugula salad, watercress, etc. — are rich in antioxidants known to combat cancer, including vitamin C and beta-carotene (a type of vitamin A). And the benefits keep coming; as natural sources of glucosinolates, they also contain antibacterial and antiviral properties, inactivate carcinogens, help reprogram cancer cells to die off, and prevent tumor formation and metastasis. These powerhouse chemicals are known to break down during the chewing and digestion process into biologically active compounds that prevent cancer cells growth, which are referred to as indoles, thiocyanates and isothiocyanates. Isothiocyanates (ITCs) found in leafy greens, which are made from glucosinolates, have been reported to help detox your body at the cellular level. Add a handful of leafy greens to your lunch and dinner to increase your nutrient intake; to make obtaining them simpler, try juicing vegetables for near perfect health. Vegetable juices are very easy to digest and make yourself at home. The Gerson diet meal plan even advises cancer patients to drink 13 glasses of freshly prepared juice daily! 2. Cruciferous Vegetables Cruciferous vegetables are known to be powerful cancer killers and some of the best vitamin C foods widely available. Many are rich in glutathione, known as the body’s “master antioxidant” since it has high free-radical-scavenging abilities. Nearly all members of the brassica family of cruciferous vegetables are nutrient-dense sources of a family of phytochemicals called isothiocyanates that are linked to cancer prevention. In addition to isothiocyanates, cruciferous veggies like cabbage and broccoli also contain sulforaphanes and indoles — two types of strong antioxidants and stimulators of detoxifying enzymes that protect the structure of DNA. Add one or two kinds — including broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage or Brussels sprouts — to three mostly plant-based meals daily in the form of roasted veggies, soups or stir fries, or dip them into hummus or Greek yogurt for a healthy, fast snack. Additionally, many other vegetables are beneficial for lowering cancer risk, including onions, zucchini, asparagus, artichokes, peppers, carrots and beets. 3. Berries The ORAC scores of nearly all berries are very high, making them some of the top high-antioxidant foods in the world. Blueberries, raspberries, cherries, strawberries, goji berries, camu camu and blackberries are easy to find and use in numerous types of recipes — which is good news considering they supply vitamin C, vitamin A and gallic acid, a powerful antifungal/antiviral agent that increases immunity. Berries are especially rich in proanthocyanidin antioxidants, which have been observed to have anti-aging properties in several animal studies and are capable of lowering free radical damage. High amounts of phenols, zeaxanthin, lycopene, cryptoxanthin, lutein and polysaccharides are other berry benefits. Less familiar “superfoods” mulberry, camu camu and goji berries have been used in traditional Chinese medicine since around 200 B.C. to increase immunity and energy, so look for those in powder or dried form in health food stores and online. 4. Brightly Orange-Colored Fruits and Veggies (Citrus Fruits, Squash, Sweet Potatoes, etc.) Brightly colored pigments found in plant foods are a sure sign that they’re beaming with phytochemicals, especially carotenoid antioxidants.
