An iPhone Application for Blood Pressure Monitoring via the Oscillometric Finger Pressing Method. Anand Chandrasekhar et al (2018), Scientific Reports https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-018-31632-x We developed an iPhone X application to measure blood pressure (BP) via the “oscillometric finger pressing method”. The user presses her fingertip on both the front camera and screen to increase the external pressure of the underlying artery, while the application measures the resulting variable-amplitude blood volume oscillations via the camera and applied pressure via the strain gauge array under the screen. The application also visually guides the fingertip placement and actuation and then computes BP from the measurements just like many automatic cuff devices. We tested the application, along with a finger cuff device, against a standard cuff device. The application yielded bias and precision errors of −4.0 and 11.4 mmHg for systolic BP and −9.4 and 9.7 mmHg for diastolic BP (n = 18). These errors were near the finger cuff device errors. This proof-of-concept study surprisingly indicates that cuff-less and calibration-free BP monitoring may be feasible with many existing and forthcoming smartphones.

Acupressure Point LI4 LI 4, which stands for “Large Intestine 4”, is an extremely useful acupressure point that is extensively used to treat chronic pain, acute stress and various types of diseases along with treatment for high blood pressure. This point is situated in the webbing between the forefinger and the thumb… right in the middle as you see here. It calms and balances blood flow throughout the body and clears stagnation. As an added benefit, it also boosts your immunity. The most effective way to apply pressure to LI 4 is to slide your thumb along the webbing until you reach the junction of the thumb and index finger bones. How to apply acupressure? Begin by moving your thumb in a small circular rubbing motion over LI 4 for a few seconds. Then you can apply gentle to moderate thumb pressure depending on how sensitive the area feels. If there is any pain, it should be a “good hurt,” not severe or uncomfortable. You can hold the point as long as you are comfortable, up to several minutes. I typically suggest about 20-30 seconds, then take a few second break and then repeat as often as you’d like. PC 6 PC 6 or Pericardium 6 is yet another important acupressure point for treating high blood pressure. It soothes and helps the heart and circulatory system in their proper functioning. This point is also known as the Inner Gate, and it is located on the inner forearm, approximately three finger-widths away from the wrist crease as you see here. This point can be stimulated by applying firm pressure to the point using your index finger or thumb. Again, apply pressure for about 20-30 seconds, then take a break and repeat as needed. G20 The G20 is below the base of your skull, in the hollows on both sides of the neck, between the two vertical neck muscles. Putting pressure here lowers your blood pressure, reduces headaches and stress by relaxing your nervous system. Use your thumbs, fingers, or knuckles to gradually apply pressure into the hollows of your skull. Close your eyes as you tilt your head back slowly. Take long, slow deep breaths as you hold for two to three minutes. Direct the pressure slowly and firmly into the center of your head. Other Acupressure Points Now, there are lots of other acupressure points -- on your feet, arms, legs, and so forth. Google it for alternative methods . . . . Once the bit has cooled I lightly place it on the nail directly above the blood clot . . . Then I begin rotating the bit back and forth between my thumb and index finger . . . . It will only take a couple of minutes . . . . Before I will penetrate through the top layer of the nail . . . . And the blood will ooze out relieving the pressure immediately. I have seen those who use a red hot needle or will use a drill with the bit . . . This can cause further injury . . . Without treatment, a bad cut can lead to permanent damage. But how should a person know when a bleeding cut is serious enough to require medical attention? We asked Dr. Martin Brown, chairman of the department of emergency medicine at Inova Alexandria Hospital in Virginia. First, the medical term for a cut or tear in the skin is a laceration. Dr. Brown says the length is usually not as important as the depth. He says a long cut on a finger can likely be treated without a visit to a doctor if the wound is not very deep. He said a short but deep laceration where a tendon, nerve or blood vessel has been damaged may need professional attention. Some injuries -- like a fingertip that gets cut off -- might require surgery to repair.How a wound bleeds can be a sign of how serious it is. Minor cuts usually produce what is known as venous bleeding. This means the blood flows steadily from the injury. The bleeding will often stop when pressure is put on the wound. Dr. Brown says in most cases holding direct pressure with clean gauze or a cloth for four to five minutes should stop the bleeding. With a cut finger, holding the hand above the heart can reduce the loss of blood.But if a cut appears to be pumping blood out with some force, this may be a sign of arterial bleeding. This kind of injury should be treated by a medical professional as soon as possible. Even a cut that does not require medical attention must be kept clean to prevent infection. Small cuts should be cleaned gently with clean water. Use a washcloth to clean the area if the wound is dirty. Dr. Brown says cuts should be covered with a clean, dry bandage. Bacteria and other microorganisms can enter the body through a cut in the skin. One kind of infection that can result is tetanus. The first signs of this disease include difficulty opening the mouth -- often called lockjaw -- and difficulty swallowing. Tetanus can be deadly. However, hands are also very common and I personally had issues with this myself a few years ago. Causes One cause of poor blood flow to your hands would be carpal tunnel syndrome, which is more typical these days because everyone is on their computer or phones. Another cause would be that your back isn’t aligned well and you need a chiropractic adjustment or a massage to relax the muscles around your spine and neck. Again, this is more prevalent these days because we’re sitting so long, hunched over the computer with poor posture. Finally, another major reason for poor blood flow would be because inflammation... Which requires an anti-inflammatory diet and anti-inflammatory supplements, herbs and vitamins. It’s VERY IMPORTANT to know that poor blood flow and circulation is one of the primary causes of a heart attack or stroke. This is because it can lead to: -Hypertension and high blood pressure -Hardening and narrowing of your arteries -Higher cholesterol and plaque build up So whether you feel it in your hands or your feet, it’s a WARNING SIGN that you MUST improve your blood flow and circulation. SOLUTIONS So let’s continue and I’ll quickly reveal one of the 3 best solutions for improving blood flow and circulation to your hands Hand Squeezing/Gripping This is for strengthening your grip and your hand muscles, while increasing blood flow. Grab anything you can squeeze… this can be something “soft”, such as rolled up socks. Or something a lot firmer like a tennis ball. If you’re weak, start with something softer and build up to a firmer tennis ball as you gain strength. You should squeeze the object, then HOLD for at least 1-2 seconds, then release. That’s ONE repetition. Do at least 10 repetitions and work up to 20-30 reps… or until you feel a good burn in your hands. That’s ONE set. Then back to the original hand. Better to start with your STRONGER hand. You should do 2-3 sets of at least 15 or more repetitions, 3x weekly on alternate days. Such as Mon, Wed and Fri. Remember, you need to squeeze and HOLD to really FEEL the muscles contract and increase blood flow and muscle contractions to the area. After you're done, massage and stretch your hands and forearms. Wrist Curls Now we want to strengthen your wrist and your forearm muscles. To do this, you’ll do wrist curls and reverse wrist curls. To do a wrist curl, you’ll need a light dumbbell and slowly curl the weight from the bottom to the top. You can put your forearms on your leg, on a bench or anything stable. Do 3 sets of 15-25 repetitions, 3x weekly. And then you’ll also want to do reverse wrist curls for the top of your forearms. Same idea, but going the opposite direction. Again, 3 sets of 15-25 repetitions, 3x weekly. Just like the hand squeezing/gripping exercise, do these on alternate days … But this time, let’s do it on OTHER days -- Tues/Thurs/Sat if possible. This way we are exercising your hands and forearms every day. However, if that’s not possible, just do them all on the same days as the gripping exercise -- Mon/Wed/Fri Walking Even though this video is about blood flow to your hands, your BODY as a WHOLE requires better circulation... And I think walking is one of the best exercises you can do and almost anyone can do it, any where, any time of the day and it doesn’t cost you anything. Ideally you would walk outside in fresh air if possible. First thing morning and/or late evening are good times but, whenever you can is a better than nothing. Try your best to walk just a little bit every single day. And, what kind of health problem depends on the symptoms and cause of your poor circulation. Typically though, all roads lead to a heart attack or stroke... Or some kind of “heart disease”. Basically, a major health problem for your HEART and/or your BRAIN! Now, in previous videos I’ve discussed the different CAUSES of poor blood flow, as well as various SOLUTIONS. However, as extremely important it is for improving your blood flow, you FIRST need to know if you have poor circulation. So, today’s video will quickly cover the 15 scary warning signs that you have blood flow circulation - that you can’t ignore. Tingling Sensations or Numbness In Your Extremities Now, this typically happens in your hands and feet, including your toes and fingers. And this happens more so as you get older. It’s basically a warning sign that your body is telling you, “hey, fix this because I’m not getting the nutrients and anti-aging hormones to these area and it’s going to get worse over time” Cold Extremities Similar to numbness, have cold extremities … such as your hands and feet, is another obvious sign of poor blood flow. Maybe in the winter, when you’re outside in the cold, it’s to be expected. But, not the rest of the year or when you’re indoors. Dry Skin The skin is one of the first areas to show physical symptoms of poor circulation. Despite getting enough water, your skin may dry out. Swelling of Your Feet & Hands On the opposite end, you may also start to retain water in areas, so you don’t see it on the surface of your skin… which results in swelling of your feet and hands. Skin Discoloration When your hands and feet don’t get adequate amounts of oxygenated blood, you may also notice discoloration of the skin covering these parts of your body. Decreased Memory & Cognition People don’t realize that your brain requires a lot of blood flow, over 15% of cardiac (heart) output. Dizzy Spells and Headaches Dizzy spells are also extremely common. Your brain isn’t getting the oxygen to keep it working efficiently. Even if you get plenty of water, you won’t improve the dizziness. Loss Of Appetite Now, this is a less obvious symptom, but it’s even a BIGGER problem. This is because poor blood flow to your gut means poor digestion, which leads to malnutrition. Digestive Problems This goes hand-in-hand with the loss of appetite and it’s typically misdiagnosed… and that’s why I bring it up. Weak Immune System This also is connected to digestive problems and lack of appetite. Decreased Libido Even though a decrease in libido has a lot to do with your hormones, poor blood flow is important because it means lack of key hormones and enzymes being delivered to this area … Hair Loss, Brittle Hair & Nails Also, due to the lack of nutrient-fill blood in your body’s extremities, new growth of hair and nails may become weak and brittle. Remember, your blood ALSO contains hormones. Varicose Veins Poor circulation can cause the veins just under the surface of the skin on your legs to become swollen, twisted, and very visible. Tightening of Chest & Difficulty In Breathing When you have poor circulation, your heart doesn’t get as much blood flow as it normally should. AGE Most people don’t realize that AGE is one of the BIGGEST factors for high blood pressure. I discuss this in my very important article, but what’s important to note is that after the age of 40, 33% of the population has high blood pressure and after the age of 60, over 71% of the population has hypertension! So, if you’re over the age of 40 and have high blood pressure, it may not be your fault. But it IS your responsibility to fix it right away and here is how I lowered my dad’s blood pressure naturally, in just 30 days. 2. GENETICS & FAMILY HISTORY Well, not much can be done here. This is in fact my own problem because I have a family history (on my dad’s side) of hypertension, heart attacks and especially strokes. You can read more about it, include my personal favorite solution that my dad, my family and I use to promote healthy blood pressure levels, naturally! 3. SMOKING Come on people, smoking has NO health benefits. STOP smoking! 4. ALCOHOL A little bit of alcohol is okay, especially if it’s organic red wine. But drinking every night will cause damage to your heart, arteries and liver. Alcohol is a toxic and it’s acidic, both being bad for your body. 5. BEING OVERWEIGHT Similar to smoking, being overweight has no health benefits. And the older you get, the harder it is to lose that unwanted fat. 6. SODIUM Salt has its benefits actually. Regular table salt or salt found in processed foods and packages is BAD for you. However, “natural” salts such as Himalayan rock or Celtic sea salt is GOOD for you and can actually help LOWER blood pressure. I’ll discuss this in a future article. 7. STRESS Well know stress is bad. However, you can’t get rid of it. What’s important is the MEANING you give to stressful situations. If you freak out, get negative and focus on the problem the entire time … you put your body under extra stress. The secret is to focus on the SOLUTION and to know that “this too shall pass” and worrying about the problem isn’t going to help anything… Especially our blood pressure or heart. 8. LACK OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY We sit too much these days. Just get outside and walk daily, even if it’s just for 15-20 minutes. It’ll do wonders for your physical AND mental health! 9. MEDICAL CONDITIONS This goes back to “genetics”. And if you know you have a genetic “problem”, which is making things worse, then you MUST make changes to your life-style because your body is more sensitive than the average person. This is a similar problem with my dad and why he had a stroke. 10. MEDICATION Ironically, many “heart” medications actually cause more heart PROBLEMS in the long run. They can increase your cholesterol, blood sugar or blood pressure levels. They can decrease blood flow and circulation. And they all cause extra stress on your liver and kidneys, which then cause more problems for your heart. The recent change is due in part to the growing number of Americans living with high blood pressure. “High blood pressure affects so many different organs in the body-your heart, your liver, your lungs, your brain, your cardiovascular system in general,” she said. Things like elevated weight, stress, and lack of exercise can cause high blood pressure—which is why health experts recommend lifestyle modifications to get your numbers under control. “Lifestyle modifications have to do with exercise, with eating, with stress control, all of those things,” said Roberts. Chronically high blood pressure can lead to a stroke or heart attack. “If someone has chronically high blood pressure, what happens is, it means that the vessels of the body have lost their elasticity or their center has become smaller,” she said. Studies show genetics only play about a two percent role in your blood pressure—meaning your health is really in your hands. “They need to know what their blood pressure is and they need to know what’s normal and what’s abnormal for them,” said Roberts.
