Searching For a Better Battery, with Brad Templeton
In this day and age, we and our gadgets are limited by the archaic ways we store our power. Tech guru Brad Templeton explains that a breakthrough in battery technology would spark an exciting wave of innovation and enable the future of computing to be realized. Read more at BigThink.com: http://goo.gl/g7zLdQ Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript: One of the biggest barriers in making computers faster is how much power they consume. And in fact, one thing that stopped your computer from having a faster clock rate, where it used to be it was another gigahertz every year you double that clock rate, is that that requires a lot of energy. And it's so much that your chips would melt if we ran them a lot faster. And if you looked inside a modern desktop computer you've probably seen it's got a big tower with silver veins and fan blowing on it. That's to get all the heat out. And that's making it hard to make the desktop computers faster. In your pocket you're limited by what the battery can do. And we have had better battery chemistries over time, but again this is an area where breakthroughs are needed for cars, as well as for devices we have in our pockets, and even for storing power that's generated from the power grid. We really would love to switch to renewal power like solar and wind, but the problem is that these only come when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing and so you need to store the power to use at a later time and that's actually a pretty difficult challenge. Batteries are one potential way to do it, pumping water uphill is a way to do it if you have reservoirs, but that itself presents its own some challenge. Now when you get down to the battery you've probably, if you've ever looked inside a modern phone, that is if you have one you can open anymore, you've probably seen that most of that phone is actually the battery. That's the thing which is giving you all the weight. It's the thing that makes an iPad hard to hold in your hands because it's got a big heavy battery. We would love to see improvement in that. There are lots of things in the lab, but there's a pretty important rule that people have come to understand. When someone tells you "I can do this in the lab. I can make it for a dollar a kilogram." Or whatever it is the price they think they can do, the correct answer says "Okay I'll order a bunch." And then I'll say "Oh wait I can't actually deliver them to you." So you have to really make it commercializiable before you can say you have it and that hasn't happened yet. Directed / Produced by Jonathan Fowler, Elizabeth Rodd, and Dillon Fitton

Fungi: Death Becomes Them - CrashCourse Biology #39
Death is what fungi are all about. By feasting on the deceased remains of almost all organisms on the planet, converting the organic matter back into soil from which new life will spring, they perform perhaps the most vital function in the global food web. Fungi, which thrive on death, make all life possible. Bigger Bandwidth = Faster World Brain, with TED's Chris Anderson
This video is part of Big Think's collaboration with Singularity University on Exponential Technology. Chris Anderson, curator of TED Talks, explains how the plummeting price of bandwidth about a decade ago opened opportunities for new innovation to grow. Suddenly it was possible for TED to transmit its talks via the web at virtually no cost. This was just one example of Moore's Law in action. Similar breakthroughs have consistently changed the face of communications with low-cost high-bandwidth internet opening doors for Facebook and Google, among others. In late January 2015, Big Think, where the world’s leading thinkers examine the most essential ideas of our age, and Singularity University, a teaching organization and accelerator, came together to find definitive answers to what constitutes exponential leadership––true leadership for the age of exponential disruption. Chris Anderson is featured in the resulting 2015 Exponential Leaders List. Read more at BigThink.com: http://goo.gl/O8uR Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript: Well, TED really was made by a major technological disruption. It happened about ten years ago. The price of bandwidth plummeted. Back in 2004 the cost of sending a lecture from person A to person B on the other side of the world was effectively $2 just for one piece of communication. You'd have to copy it onto a DVD, mail it across the world and then they'd view it. And then Internet bandwidth plummeted in cost and suddenly it was possible to do this thing called online video. And so within literally not much more than a year the real world cost of sharing 15 minutes of spoken information plummeted from a couple dollars to about a penny or two. Now that was an astonishing shift because it suddenly meant that a sponsor could cover that cost if need be, effectively the cost of sending an idea was free. And so we tried an experiment to put a few talks up online. To our astonishment they went viral and suddenly TED turned on its head. And instead of being a once a year conference in California it became this online idea of ideas worth spreading. The interesting thing about technology is that it's a mixture of surprises and predictability. I mean the most famous piece of predictability is something like Moore's Law where over many years you see a trend that almost becomes a self-fulfilling thing where an entire industry acts as if Moore's Law were true and thereby in a sense makes it come true because that creates the market to justify the investment in ever more powerful computer chips, et cetera. And so there are definite trends that you can look at. It's been obvious for a while that the Internet was changing everything. And there's a roadmap out there right now that is actually an amazing roadmap and possibly underappreciated that the Internet is spreading to every corner of the planet and will be low cost, high-bandwidth everywhere. Companies like Facebook and Google are investing billions of dollars to make sure that this is so and that's a complete game changer. That means for the first time in history not one billion but seven billion people plus will be interconnected. What does that mean? Who knows but it's possible to dream about that future because the technological landscape is set out and it's clear. So that's certainly something that we're thinking about. It changes our strategy. What is the TED Talk of the future? What would you say if you could have 18 minutes to talk to the girl in the village, the boy in the slum? We don't know the answers to those questions but we sure as hell need to figure them out.

☢ October 2015 ☢ Nevada Radioactive Waste Facility Fire Close to Las Vegas - Video #2
Published on Oct 22, 2015 Nevada Radioactive Waste Facility Fire (October 2015) It could be some time before officials know what caused a fire at a low-level radioactive waste dump in Nye County that shut down a 140-mile stretch of Nevada's main north-south highway for almost 24 hours. U.S. Highway 95 reopened to traffic Monday evening after tests conducted from the air and on the ground showed no signs of radioactive contamination from the blaze that broke out Sunday afternoon at the US Ecology waste site about 110 miles northwest of Las Vegas. In a conference call Monday night, State Fire Marshal Chief Peter Mulvihill said investigators would be taking a close and methodical look at the site "once it is safe to go down there." He said it's still too early to know what might have sparked the fire, which was reported about 1 p.m. Sunday in one of the site's low-level radioactive waste disposal trenches and was allowed to burn itself out over the course of about 12 hours. Concerns about possible contamination from the fire prompted authorities to cancel school in the nearest town of Beatty and close U.S. 95 from state Route 160, about 70 miles northwest of Las Vegas, to the Nye County seat of Tonopah, 210 miles northwest of Las Vegas, about 7 p.m. Sunday. US Ecology officials said they created "an exclusion zone around the facility" at the request of state regulators, but storms in the area Sunday night delayed efforts to survey the site from the air. Federal aircraft that can detect radioactive particles conducted flights Monday morning, followed by a detection team on the ground that started in Beatty, 10 miles to the north, and worked its way to the waste facility. Once it was determined that the fire was out and the surrounding area was safe from radioactive contamination, the highway was reopened about 5:30 p.m. Monday, releasing a flood of vehicles that had been trapped overnight in Beatty. Mike Harmon, chief of the local volunteer fire department, said all of the motel rooms in town were filled with stranded travelers, and a line of vehicles a half-mile long was waiting at the road block for the highway to reopen. He guessed there were 30 to 40 tractor-trailers parked along the road and packed into various parking lots in the town of about 1,000 people. "It's pretty full," Harmon said. Before the fire, flooding on roads throughout the area had already prompted the Nye County School District to cancel classes Monday in Amargosa Valley, about 20 miles south of US Ecology. The two public schools in Beatty were closed Monday as a precautionary response to the fire, said Cameron McRae, the district's director of transportation, maintenance and operations. All Nye County schools were expected to open Tuesday. The US Ecology site has served as a dump for low-level radioactive waste and other hazardous materials since the early 1960s. From 1983 to 1992, solid low-level radioactive waste primarily from hospitals and university research labs was buried there in dirt-covered trenches. It came from Nevada, Colorado and New Mexico, the states that make up the Rocky Mountain Low-Level Radioactive Waste Board compact, according to Leonard Slosky, the board's executive director. US Ecology stopped accepting radioactive waste in 1992, but it still takes in about 100,000 tons of hazardous waste per year from out-of-state and in-state sources. A fire in one of the disposal trenches or in a facility near them would be "very unusual" because there are supposed to be no ignition sources in or around the waste, Slosky said. Mulvihill said the fire burned a 40-to-50-foot area of the 40-acre site on state-owned land. As part of their investigation, state officials said they will be looking at the overall stability of the more than 50-year-old dump. The fire prompted a coordinated emergency response from Nye County and from Nevada's Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Public Safety, Highway Patrol, State Fire Marshal, National Guard, Department of Transportation, and Division of Environment Protection. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also sent an on-scene coordinator to the site. In 2010, the EPA fined US Ecology nearly $500,000 for 18 hazardous waste violations. Reports on the violations said that on at least two occasions operators observed smoke coming from a soils decontamination heating unit that resulted in the release of hazardous compounds into the air. Inspectors also noted "six spills, leaks or other uncontrolled PCB discharges" between 2006 and 2008 that weren't reported as required by law, according to an EPA news release in 2010. PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, are toxic, organic pollutants that persist in the environment. They were once widely used in electrical transformers and capacitors but are no longer produced in the United States. By Henry Brean and Keith Rogers Las Vegas Review-Journal

Understanding Car Crashes: It's Basic Physics
What happens to vehicles and their occupants in crashes is determined by science. "You can't argue with the laws of physics," says Griff Jones, award-winning high school physics teacher who goes behind the scenes at the Institute's Vehicle Research Center to explore the basic science behind car crashes. Using a series of vehicle maneuvers on a test track plus filmed results of vehicle crash tests, Jones explains in anything but lecture style the concept of inertia, the relationship between crash forces and inertia, momentum and impulse, and a lot more. Quote from Paul G. Hewitt, the developer of the "Conceptual Physics" curriculum and author of the best selling text book by the same name: "The video "Understanding Car Crashes: It's Basic Physics" and accompanying teacher's guide are wonderful. The pacing is excellent, the coverage fascinating, and most importantly, the physics is correct. It's a first rate teaching package. I give it five stars!" The Third Industrial Revolution: A Radical New Sharing Economy
The global economy is in crisis. The exponential exhaustion of natural resources, declining productivity, slow growth, rising unemployment, and steep inequality, forces us to rethink our economic models. Where do we go from here? In this feature-length documentary, social and economic theorist Jeremy Rifkin lays out a road map to usher in a new economic system. A Third Industrial Revolution is unfolding with the convergence of three pivotal technologies: an ultra-fast 5G communication internet, a renewable energy internet, and a driverless mobility internet, all connected to the Internet of Things embedded across society and the environment. This 21st century smart digital infrastructure is giving rise to a radical new sharing economy that is transforming the way we manage, power and move economic life. But with climate change now ravaging the planet, it needs to happen fast. Change of this magnitude requires political will and a profound ideological shift. Coal, Steam, and The Industrial Revolution: Crash Course World History #32
Mongols Shirts and Crash Course Posters! http://store.dftba.com/collections/crashcourse In which John Green wraps up revolutions month with what is arguably the most revolutionary of modern revolutions, the Industrial Revolution. While very few leaders were beheaded in the course of this one, it changed the lives of more people more dramatically than any of the political revolutions we've discussed. So, why did the Industrial Revolution happen around 1750 in the United Kingdom? Coal. Easily accessible coal, it turns out. http://ThoriumRemix.com/ Thorium is an abundant material which can be transformed into massive quantities of energy. To do so efficiently requires a very different nuclear reactor than the kind we use today- Not one that uses solid fuel rods, but a reactor in which the fuel is kept in a liquid state. Not one that uses pressurized water as a coolant, but a reactor that uses chemically stable molten salts. Such a reactor is called a "Molten Salt Reactor". Many different configurations are possible. Some of these configurations can harness Thorium very efficiently. This video explores the attributes of Molten Salt Reactors. Why are they compelling? And why do many people (including myself) see them as the only economical way of fully harnessing ALL our nuclear fuels... including Thorium. This video has been under development since 2012. I hope it conveys to you why I personally find Molten Salt Reactors so compelling, as do the many volunteers and supporters who helped create it. Much of the footage was shot by volunteers. Climate Change Explained
A straightforward explanation of Climate Change: the heat from human emissions is roughly equal to exploding 400,000 Hiroshima atomic bombs every day. Historically, every time carbon dioxide levels increase in Earth's atmosphere, the average surface temperature increases, ice melts, and the seas rise. The pale red dot: colonising Mars and beyond
The great astronomer Carl Sagan envisaged Earth as a lonely life-raft in the cosmic ocean: a 'Pale Blue Dot' carrying all of humanity. However this state leaves us tied to the fate of our planet. To ensure our survival as a species, many advocate becoming interplanetary, colonising and perhaps terraforming other worlds. Join us to debate the feasibility of such an endeavour, to answer the ultimate question: can we — and should we — colonise Mars? Oxford Martin School, University of Oxford www.oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk

Google Tech Talk December 13, 2012 (more info below) Presented by Geir Engdahl. ABSTRACT There's a ton of under-utilized stuff collecting dust in closets and garages around the world. How can we make it searchable, accessible and useful? Xoogler and CEO of SkyLib Geir Engdahl will tell the story of what motivated him to found SkyLib and how he's using Google technologies such as App Engine, Android and Maps to "index" the world's stuff. The talk outlines the "big picture" around today's resource usage, and suggests how resources can be utilized more effectively. It also dives into the details of using Google's technologies "from the outside". Geir has a master's degree in applied math, and has worked three years for Google Canada on the Conversion Optimizer product, which he received an OC Award for. In his spare time, he organizes the Norwegian Informatics Olympiad and is the leader of the local Green Party chapter. His ambition is to work for a smarter, greener future.

Electrical Conductivity | #aumsum #kids #education #science #learn
Electrical conductivity is the ability of a material to conduct electricity. Take an electrical circuit consisting of a bulb, cell, wire and a switch. Connect wood to the circuit. The bulb does not glow indicating that wood is a poor conductor of electricity. Connect a paper roll to the circuit. The bulb does not glow, indicating that paper is also a poor conductor of electricity. Take a metal like iron and connect it in the same circuit. The bulb glows indicating that iron is a good conductor of electricity. Similarly, other metals like copper, silver, etc. also make good conductors of electricity. Hence, we can say that most metals are good conductors of electricity.
