To start, the mentality of cheat meals means that you are splurging or indulging. You are enjoying something that you aren’t capable of experiencing or having during your non-cheating periods. When the regular, every day foods and diet you follow cause you to have a clear dichotomy between foods you actually enjoy and those you only eat because you feel like you are supposed to be eating them, then you are setting yourself up for failure. If on the other hand, you were able to identify foods that you actually enjoyed that were still nutritious and in line with your goals of losing weight, body fat and building muscle then you would be on the way to nutritional freedom and permanent weight loss. Too many people think that the only way to lose weight and have abs is to eat steamed broccoli, dry asparagus and iceberg lettuce. That couldn’t be further from the truth. The best way to lose weight is to start looking at food as fuel for your muscles and your performance and stop hating the limited food choices you have left yourself. The avoidance of carbs, fats and even some proteins in the pursuit of six pack abs is a mistake. Rice, pasta, potatoes, butter and oils can all be (and should be) part of a nutrition plan that is capable of helping you lose weight and put on lean muscle mass. If you fall victim to the carb phobia that is far too rampant these days then you are likely to be robbing your muscles of the exact nutrients they need to perform at their best. Beyond that, it is these very foods that tend to help us maintain our sanity when changing our eating lifestyle. If you completely eliminate starchy carbohydrates from your diet then you are going to quickly fall off of your eating plan. Carbs and fats are preferred energy sources for our bodies and avoiding them for any length of time in the pursuit of fast fat loss is a recipe for failure. When you incorporate these back into your eating plan, you will suddenly find that the choice to have something like carrot cake, beer or even cupcakes is something that you are making because you wanted them not because your body felt as if it needed them! There is a huge difference between the two. Once you string together a period of time that you are doing this your results become self motivating and you will find that you make less choices for “cheat meals” and more decisions are made to continue eating your nutritious food choices since you prefer them and actually enjoy them. This is the best way to lose weight long term because you aren’t basing your attempt on deprivation or diets. This way works regardless of the way you are eating now. There are many reasons that prevent people from losing weight, but ultimately, they all boil down to the thoughts that become habitual. In other words, we need to make a few shifts in our mindset. Here are the two mindset shifts that encourage weight loss: Lack of patience v long-term persistence & consistency In reality, you never really know close you are from achieving your goals. It doesn't matter if you want six pack abs, want 10 pounds of muscle, or want to 10 pounds of fat, the same principles apply. Many of us throw in the towel right as we are turning the results corner. So, be patient and persistent, and remember that anything worthwhile takes time. If your goal is to lose weight, realize that you didn't gain the excess weight overnight, so you can't possibly lose it all overnight. Stay the course, be consistent, and you will see results. Consensus thinking v advice based on proven results Unfortunately, conventional fitness advice has hindered the dreams of many people. Many people give up on their dream body because they exercise and diet so hard, for weeks or months, without seeing any real results...  I know this feeling first hand. It's almost a feeling of betrayal (I did everything I was told, and ended up with nothing). This was me for a long time. I was bouncing around from program to program, doing what I was told by the experts. And I got only minor results. Conventional wisdom tells you to do a lot of cardio. Right! The treadmill is your best friend.  And...Eat 6 small meals a day, making sure to keep your total calorie consumption as low as possible.  Here's where reality steps in. It's simply NOT sustainable. Sure, if you run for hours and eat like a bird, you'll lose weight...  But who has the time or means to do that forever? The reality show, "biggest loser" is a good example. Take a look at the past contestants. The commonality is that many of them have put on plenty of weight since the show. This is common theme for many people who lose weight. In fact, it's so common that it has been termed the "yo-yo" effect. Weight comes off -- then it goes back on. A simple mindset shift means you can avoid this weight loss pitfall. Avoid following the conventional advice, and look at health and physique of the person who is offering an opinion. It doesn't stop there. Ask yourself, "what do they have to gain by telling me this"? Be cautious and question everything, even the advice you get from me. Bottom line... I want you to get into a habit of this. Do your own research. To sum this up... 1. Practice persistence in your life. You can do this everyday, and your ability to persist will grow stronger. 2. Don't follow conventional fitness advice. Find someone who you can trust in the fitness world. Find someone (or a few people) who provide you with honest information, and walks the talk. Making these simple shifts in thinking will have a big impact on your results. Remember, it all starts with your thoughts. Don't under estimate the power of them.

How about a week? What about a day? These are all questions and I'm going to answer in today's video and believe it or not these questions aren't as straightforward as they seem. For example you could lose a ton of weight in a month but are you going to be able to keep that large amount of weight that you lost off? After all what's the use of losing weight if we gain it all back again? Generally speaking its believed that the more weight you lose in a shorter period of time the more likely you'll gain that weight back. So many trainers and fitness professionals recommend that you take a slower approach to fat loss. The accepted Norm for healthy sustainable fat loss is 1-2 pounds a week. For those of you looking to drop 30 pounds in a month I'm sure this isn't great news. But if you are looking to lose more weight than that, I wouldn't exit out of this video just yet because I have a lot more information for you. At 1 to 2 pounds a week this means that since we have a little over 4 weeks every month, on average we'll be able to lose 5 to 10 pounds a month and keep it off. After working as a trainer for a long time when I hear numbers like this I get pretty excited. A 5 - 10 pound weight loss in a month is considered an excellent result in my book. However some of you may still want to lose weight faster. And you might have clicked on this video to find out what's actually possible beyond the 1-2 pounds a week. Well luckily we have crazy TV shows like The Biggest Loser to show us what's truly possible when we kick Health to the curb. On this reality TV show one contestant lost 100 pounds in 7 weeks. That's a ridiculous amount of weight to lose in such a short time frame. Another contestant lost 34 pounds in a week. Again absolutely absurd. But there you have it faster weight loss is technically possible. The reason why I say technically and the reason why I call this absurd is because losing so much weight so fast is not only dangerous but chances of weight regain are huge. And if you don't believe me just take a look at the percentage of people that regain their weight after the Biggest Loser is over. On top of that for the premiere of season 8 two patients were hospitalized after collapsing during a 1-mile run. So even though it is possible to lose a hundred pounds in 7 weeks and it is possible to lose over 30 pounds in one week it usually isn't applicable to regular people in the real world. And allow me to explain why. First of all most of the contestants on the Show start off extremely heavy. one contestant was even 526 pounds. Most of you are not starting off at such a high weight. Without getting too in-depth into the reasons why, all you gotta know is that the higher your starting weight the faster you'll be able to lose a larger amount of weight. But even with the higher starting weight aside, these contestants are forced to work out 5 to 6 hours a day while eating strictly supervised diets. That's what gets them losing double-digits every week. I've been training for a long time and sometimes I would do double sessions in one day. Which would mean I would do a workout and then come back later to work out again. Maybe at the most I worked out three and a half or four hours in 1 day. And I would never do that back to back for consecutive days. Also my body was already in great shape to handle that kind of stress. But working out that much would still absolutely kill me. How in the world these people on this show are able to work out that much without straight up dying is beyond me. But something that you can be sure of is that the average person is not going to be able to maintain that kind of pace. Even the advance person will not be able to maintain that kind of pace especially because as you become more fit it's harder to lose more and more weight. The risks of losing weight that fast easily outweigh the benefits. You run the risk of developing gallstones, mineral deficiencies, and you can end up in the hospital like many biggest loser contestants from exhaustion. On top of that even if you don't care about your health and you only care about your looks, well losing weigh that fast, your looks will suffer too. You're definitely going to lose muscle mass and there's a much larger chance of having excess skin and stretch marks when your done. Don't forget weight and body fat are not the same thing.

In this video, I’m going to show you how you can actually build muscle and burn fat at the same time and significantly change the look of your body by doing so. I will also cover some of the potential pitfalls on the way to the perfect bulk and cut that could be undercutting your end result. To start, it helps to discuss what the theory behind bulking and cutting is for putting on muscle. That discussion needs to start with a determination of what you ultimately want to look like at the end of your bulk and cut. If your goal is to wind up with nothing but pure lean muscle gain then you will have to identify that and understand that your cut is going to have to be precise and must be able to last for the duration. In other words, you will have to cut until every bit of excess body fat that you put on is no longer there, while making sure not to compromise any of the lean muscle mass you added in the process. If on the other hand you simply want to add “size”, for lack of a better term (meaning pack on partial amounts of lean muscle and body fat) then your goals and the practicality of the process would become much simpler to adhere to. For the purposes of this video and channel however, we are assuming that the end product of your bulk and cut would be to add pure lean muscle gains without body fat hiding what you have done. With this said, I argue that this whole process does not have to be segmented into a bulking phase and a cutting phase but rather can be achieved at once (with a significant impact on how you look and feel at the end). By being hypo caloric and maintaining a positive nitrogen balance you can definitely add muscle and burn fat at the same time, albeit at a slightly slower but much more consistent and maintainable rate. When the longevity of your appearance and gains is what is paramount, the alternative of spending half the year fat and a few months comfortable enough with your physique to take off your shirt is not an option. When you bulk and cut at the same time you can walk around 365 days a year looking your best while steadily accruing lean muscle year over year. The risk of bulking and then cutting is often that the adaptation to going into a sustainable hypo caloric diet becomes daunting and as soon as it cannot be maintained, the results are lost. Many people will enter into a bulk and never fully come out of it. There are many a gym filled with guys spending hours each week on cardio trying to reverse the effects of a long ago bulk gone wrong. If instead you focused on staying slightly hypocaloric while increasing your protein intake to support positive nitrogen balance needed to keep a net protein synthesis, you would find that you could add pure lean muscle more consistently. Now, this process will be a slightly slower one than trying to force your body to grow more quickly but the end result will be more sustainable and consistent. Move It And Lose It - By Body Empowered Fitness

After watching the success of the television show, The Biggest Loser, Sylvia Knilans (founder of Body Empowered Fitness) decided to start a weight loss and fitness program of her own. Similar to the popular TV show, Sylvia invited the public to send photos and letters explaining why they wanted to participate in the Move It and Lose It program. Based on the letters and personal interviews, she chose 12 people to take part in the fitness challenge, which allowed them to work-out for FREE at any of her centers for a total of 6 months. During this time, the contestants also received nutritional guidance and counseling. At the end of six months, the person who lost the greatest percentage of his or her own body weight won the challenge and received a FREE lifetime membership to Body Empowered Fitness! Just like in the past, all Move It and Lose It contestant's will be assigned to train at one of three Body Empowered Fitness locations for the full six months of the program. You'll be asked to commit to working out at least 3-4 times per week and youll be required to keep a diary of your food intake. The personal fitness trainers will review the contestant's food journals each week to make sure that everyone is staying on track. Each Move It and Lose It participant will also be asked to purchase a heart rate monitor to calculate the calories you are burning during each work-out session.
