See detailed photos of the lumber rack: http://gadgetsandgrain.com/2017/10/13/easy-to-build-lumber-rack-for-garage Let's be friends: https://www.facebook.com/gadgetsandgrain/ My workshop will always need to be a garage first and woodworking shop second. To help with my lumber storage, I decided to build my own lumber rack. I scoured Pinterest for ideas, but I couldn’t quite find a design that mounted to a wall while still being able to storage large sheets of plywood and long boards simultaneously. I decided to make my own design where sheets of plywood would be stored in a large framed shelf, while sporting the traditional arm shelves for storing long boards. I also added some small cubbies for storing small cut-offs and specialty pieces of lumber. In a phrase, this lumber rack is all about boards in the front and big sheet goods in the back – head the name “Mullet-style” lumber rack.

Took about 7 days after I got all hardware and wood onsite. A pergola is just framework without a solid roof, almost anybody can build this type structure, don't let anybody rip you off with some outrageous bid. I used all red cedar, stained and sealed to save natural color. I bought all materials from Bayou City Lumber, www.bayoucitylumber.com ask for Jim http://www.bayoucitylumber.com/index.php http://www.ozcobp.com/56617--rc-ls-2-.html http://www.ozcobp.com/timber-bolts.html http://www.homedepot.com/p/Simpson-Strong-Tie-ABA-6x6-ZMAX-Galvanized-Adjustable-Post-Base-ABA66Z/100375370?keyword=669436 These are links to some of the products I used to build this Pergola.

This is a documentary movie uncovering the process of building a wooden house with hand tools from local materials starting from forest till the living space. I built my house from trees that I felled with an axe and two man crosscut saw in my own forest. I did it following the research of old carpenter's calendar that coniferous trees should be felled in January's first days when the new moon rises and the deciduous trees should be felled in the winter time during the old moon. In winter time trees are sleeping and the juice and moisture content is very low in them. As time passes timber felled in winter becomes light and strong. In the building process I used mostly traditional carpenters hand tools - axes, hand saws, timber framing chisels and slicks, old Stanley planes, augers, draw knives and mostly human energy. All the ground work for fundaments and the basement earth digging was done by hand with shovels. The foundation consists mostly of bigger and smaller rocks and boulders. Lime, sand and concrete mixture are using only in small amounts - to hold the boulders together. The visible part over the ground level - boulder mosaic has been masoned with hand split local granite. The House has been built based on the western part of Latvia - Kurland/Kurzeme (German influence) historical wooden architecture typical technique - Timber Frame construction with sliding log walls between the posts. House is two carpentry technique union - Timber Frame (that is typical in France, Germany, Great Britain, North America and other countries) and traditional Latvian log building technique, between the logs using moss from the local swamp. In the walls, timber frame and roof construction there I used only wood joints and wooden pegs to hold the main construction together - no nails, screws or steel plates. Walls are insulated with 250mm thick dry pine and larch shaving layer (leftover from the local cabinet makers workshop). Overall exterior wall thickness is 50cm. In the walls (except wind vapour breathable membrane over the roof) has not been used any plastic or modern synthetic materials. To preserve the wood from the spoiling, fame posts, sills, top beams and final cladding boards are treated with fire and pine tar mixed with Tung oil. This wood preservation technique was adapted from the Japanese traditional wood preservation technique Shou Sugi Ban (焼杉板). Exterior cladding boards recoating each 10-15 years Tung oil and pine or birch tar mixture, the house can last more than 500 years. As an example is taken Norwegian stave churches that stands more than 500 years until nowadays. Roofing is three layer white oak shingles (each 10mm thick, 120mm wide and 720mm long) laid in two directional technique. Overall amount of shingles used is 15 000 pieces. Roof walls are insulated with ecological wood fibre wool and wood fibre panels. Over the wood fibre panels are plastered natural plaster - mixture of sand, clay powder, lime, linen fibre, salt, wheat flour. Overall thickness of the plaster is 20mm and over all amount of plaster used on the walls are 5000 kilos. It works also as thermal mass and improves energy performance. Exterior measurements of the house is 6.5 x 13 meters. Living space in both floors are 120sq/m. The house is being heated with clay plastered brick bread oven and smaller oven made of clay tiles in the kitchen. To heat up both floors of the house, when outside it is minus 10 degrees (Celsium) only small oven is heated once a day. When freeze gets below -15, -20 C, we heat up the bread oven. Once it is heated, because of it’s thermal mass of 5 tons, it keeps the warmth 2-3 days. To heat up all the house (120 sq/m) in the winter time we use not more than 4 m3 of dry firewood. This is 2nd winter we are living there and we still heat up the house with the leftovers of lumber from the building process. And it will be enough for 3 more years. I have fulfilled my vision to a build natural, ecological house with high thermal efficiency, low energy consumption, sustainable, using local materials such as - wood, stone, old and new clay bricks, moss, linen fibre, clay, water, lime, wheat flour, salt and wood shavings. Support us on Patreon: http://bit.ly/2tdla40 When we first started milling lumber, we thought we'd try a homemade chainsaw mill. It did do the job, we milled up five 8' sections of tree and then built the framework of a 16x16 foot deck with it. However, as we plan on building a timber frame barn and house, we wanted something that was a little more precise, a little more sturdy (or a lot more sturdy), a little more safe, and a little more professional. Enter the Granberg chainsaw mill. In this video we'll try out the Granberg mill for the first time. We will do a lot of chainsaw milling this spring, summer and fall so stay tuned for updates and more technical videos where we'll talk about the best chains, more comparisons to a homemade version, and how to find-tune your mill. I'm sure there are lots of ways, many different ways to build floating shelves. There are people on YouTube who come up with creative ways to do pretty much anything and I'm sure building floating shelves is no different. I haven't looked to see what other people have done partly because I've had an idea in my own mind as to how I would do it. But I never had the reason to put my idea to the test, until now. I'm finishing a project for a customer and the last thing to do is to build floating shelves. I like the idea of doing away with shelf support brackets, but in my own mind I wondered, how do you make the shelves strong enough without the brackets to support a pretty good load. So my idea, which I'm sure is not new or particularly original, is to try to keep the weight down on all the pieces of the shelf but at same time try to give it as much strength to hold typical things that people put on shelves. So the strength of the shelf is achieved through the way it's internal structure is attached to the wall. Ideally if you hit studs with screws or bolts you're way ahead of the game. If that's not possible then attaching with fasteners that clamp to the back of the sheet rock to hold the structure in place is the next best option. The shell that goes over the structure and provides your finished look for your floating shelf also needs to be as lightweight as possible. Because in doing that you allow more weight to be placed on the shelf and not create a problem with sagging. So my idea is pretty simple and uses a 1" x 1.5" piece of pine lumber attached to the wall which has suspended off of it 1.5 x 1.5 x 8.25 inch shelf support pieces that are attached with a mortise and tennon type of glue joint. For this video I'm going to show a couple of different ways to attach these pieces and I think either one is plenty strong to do the job. I had some questions in my own mind as I was doing this as to how strong this really would be and so I did a video last week that I have linked up in the corner that is dedicated completely to checking the strength of this set up. It compares the strength of the glue joints to the strength of sheet rock with toggle bolt types of fasteners and it at least concludes that this type of installation is plenty strong for typical home use floating shelves. I have been surprised by how solid and versatile this type of installation can really be. I had the misconception that floating shelves were more of a gimmick and not particularly useful in normal use settings, but after working with my own design, I can see how these things can be incredibly strong with a little forethought and planning. One way to make up this glue joint is to use a festool domino cutter which is by far the fastest way to go. But unless you're in the construction business you're likely not going to have one of these. An equally effective way is to use a dowel. In this case I'm using a 5/8" diameter dowel and drilling through the wall support and the shelf support pieces at the same time by clamping both of them in position. Then the goal is to drill in a straight line. And that part is not necessarily that important as long as the pieces stayed clamped down well while you're drilling. Once your glue joints have set up, they are ready to install. In this case these are plaster walls so I used toggle bolt style fasteners to secure them to the wall. One of the benefits of installing the floating shelves in corners is that the support structure is significantly stronger just because it's mounted in the corner. However it also creates a challenge because corners are typically never perfectly square. So to get an accurate shape for these corner shelves, I build a template. This method can be used for not only this application but for building countertops or basically any situation where it is difficult to get an accurate shape because simply taking measurements with a tape don't pick up on subtle variations in angles that may be there. These are strips of 1/8 inch Masonite that are cut to lengths that are needed to create the shape of the shelves. Then with a hot glue gun they are stuck in place. For the upper shelf, the template was really close to being what I needed. However the angle on the corner was just a little tight on the front. So rather than building another template, I just shaved off a little of the front edge and that worked out fine. The structure of my shelves is pieces of quarter inch plywood that are wrapped with a 2 inch hardwood trim all the way around. In this case I'm using three-quarter inch alder and quarter inch alder plywood. I cut a quarter-inch deep by 3/8 inch wide joint in my hardwood edge that allows the plywood to be glued and nailed in place and then flushes out with the trim. I made my template so that it would be the size of the plywood pieces I needed to cut.

I've built a number of raised beds over the years, but so far this design is my favorite. The sides are 2 x 10's and the top is capped off with a 2 x 4 shelf, which not only helps keep the 2 x 10's from bowing out from the weight of the soil but also makes a great place to sit when working in the garden. OYR is all about growing a lot of food on a little land using sustainable organic methods, while keeping costs and labor at a minimum. Emphasis is placed on improving soil quality with compost, mulch, and compost tea. No store-bought fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides, compost activators, etc. are used. Framing your deck will allow you to build a solid base for your deck. Assembling the frame on the beams is the next step when installing your deck. For this project you will need joists, a tape measure, pencil, a square, drill with bits, nails and screws, a hammer, joist hangers, corner brackets, hurricane ties and a saw. To begin we will lay and measure the rim joists in conjunction with building codes, which will help support the floor joists. First cut the joists to size. When cutting treated lumber, be sure to apply a sealer to the edges. Cut 3 pilot holes in the ends of the rim. Resting on the beams, hold the rim joist against an end floor joist and attach them with screws through the pilot holes. Do the same thing on the other ends. Attach reinforcing brackets with nails. Position the frame at its final location making sure everything is square, and attach hurricane ties, which are brackets to hold the frame in place. The frame is locked, so we can install the rest of the joists. Joist hangers will help support the planks. Position the hanger against one side of the plank by tapping in the speed prong. Repeat on the other side. Next nail in the joist hanger with joist hanger nails. Finish installing the joists and hangers for each side. Place the other rim joists on top of the floor joists against the beams. Line up the joists with the marks then secure the ties in place. Add ties across every row of beams. With the frame secured to the beams, attach the other rim joist just as you did the first. Drive nails into the end of the joists. Now that the frame is finished you can start your decking. Starting near the yard and working toward the house place the straightest board you have and line it up with the joists. Drill 2 pilot holes in to the end of the boards to prevent splitting. Next drive 2 screws into every plank to the joists. Apply the next board, setting a nail between the boards to allow space for draining. Continue to position and check for square every few boards. As you get closer to the house, you can adjust spacing to allow the last board to fit, or you can cut to fit. Once the boards are all in place snap a line on the end joists and cut the ends to make sure they are all even. As your deck begins to come together, you will need to be able to access the deck with stairs, which will be the next step. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Art-Home-by-Jon-Peters/312021729836 Website: http://jonpeters.com/ I'm building a new storage shed for my lawn mower and gardening tools. I've noticed that most sheds tend to rot from the bottom up and are often home to ground hogs and skunks. Because of these issues I'm taking a little more time and effort to prevent that from happening to this shed by building a solid base and level foundation. Hope you find this video helpful

We start by digging the holes, building the frame, screwing down the decking, building stairs, a swing gate, and access door, lattice and frame, baluster railing and treating the new wood with my favorite CWF cedar tone color. The deck is built partially around the pool. We used treated lumber on the entire project. We used ACQ approved screws and nails.

I bought my pole barn shed/garage from http://www.diypolebarns.com. They have a custom quote tool which made it easy to see what the building would cost. My building needed to be unique due to "city" requirements. So, I called DIY after finishing my online quote. They were quite flexible and were able to handle my custom requirements easily. The plans were quite detailed. If I would have had time, I believe I could have built it myself, using the plans provided. The materials were excellent quality. Straight/clean lumber. All of the materials came from Graber Post out of Montgomery Indiana. It was delivered a few days before the construction crew arrived. The builder (Colossal Construction) from Ohio did an outstanding job. A crew of 4 completed the building including siding and roofing (which they usually do not do since most pole barns are steel sided) in 3 days.

A partly or fully raised deck can be a great addition to any garden, especially if the ground is sloping or uneven. Learn how to build a raised deck with this step by step guide from our Wickes experts. Subscribe to the Wickes YouTube channel here: http://po.st/YijIE1 For more Wickes garden and landscaping videos click here: http://po.st/jAXyHE Planning The key to a successful deck is in the planning. Avoid very wet areas completely and if the deck is in a shady area be prepared to treat and clean the wood annually. Draw your deck to scale on paper as accurately as you can, remember it's the deck boarding that governs the size of the deck. You should also bear in mind that any deck over 300mm off the ground will require planning permission. Corner Posts When digging the holes for your corner posts be sure to look out for any cables or pipes as you go. Once the soil is removed you should be left with a 300mm x 300mm square to a depth of 700mm for each post. Make sure you add a section of concrete block to each hole before adding in the post and Postcrete. Outer Frame If your deck is on a slope, start with corner where the deck is highest off the ground and mark on the post where the highest part of the frame will be. To ensure rain water runs off your deck, and away from the house, allow for a slight fall in the level of the deck frame by factoring in a fall of 2mm for every metre. Centre post and Support Joists Your support joists should run in the same direction as your deck boards. Sandwich the centre post between two support joists before securing with Postcrete. Trim your post by using a setsquare and a handsaw making sure you treat the cut ends as you go. When laying your landscape fabric it's best to overlap the fabric to ensure it covers all of the area under your deck. Steps Your steps should be supported on solid and level ground. When building your stairs you will also need to make sure they are flush with both the top and side of your frame. When securing your deck boards to the steps, always secure the front faces of the steps first. Deck Boards When securing deck boards we'd recommend drilling all fixing points with a 2mm bit to prevent them from splitting, also, if you countersink all drilled fixing points you will get a smoother finish. Keep spaces even between adjacent boards by using a spacer from an off cut of timber (we'd recommend a gap of 5-8mm to allow the timber to expand and contract). Fascia Boards Start by attaching all the boards that do not need to be cut down, with 64mm screws. If you are adding an angled board because the decking is being built on a slope you will need to add packers to the deck frame. Remember to also leave a gap of at least 5mm between the board and the ground as you do not want it touching the ground at any point. In this video we explore and learn how to use shipping containers as strong, durable and mobile building blocks to create amazing structures of all kinds, like a house, addition, office space, or cabin; and we feature a few stunning projects to get you inspired! Anthony Ruggiero from Storstac Inc. (http://www.storstac.com/) showed us around their yard in Toronto, Ontario and took the time to teach us about the ins and outs of building with shipping containers. We're excited to share the tips and information we learned with you. Shipping containers come in standard 20 foot and 40 foot lengths, and there are other specialty custom sizes like the 10', 45', 48', 53' long containers. Almost all shipping containers are made in China, and can be bought used (after they've been used for 10-20 years), or new, which means they've one been used once. Since there are no shipping manifests for used containers to show what was transported in them over the course of their lifetime (it could be anything from clothes to nuclear waste), it's better to build with a new shipping container that's only been used once. They're made with COR-TEN steel, which is a weathering steel that can withstand harsh weather conditions and elements like salt water because the rust on weathering steel creates a protective patina to keep it strong, whereas rust on mild steel would actually weaken the metal. While building with shipping containers is not necessarily cheaper than conventional building, it does have advantages because the containers are modular, movable and mobile, durable, and have a unique, modern look. They can be do it yourself friendly if you've worked with steel before, or if you find a company to take care of the steel work for you so you can focus on how to frame it and finish it from the inside. Let us know what you think of shipping containers as alternative building blocks in the comments! Becky talks about how she got her new steel building pole barn. How she designed it to keep the cost down and get the most for her money. Even though this is just a car port, the 9 foot walls and tack room make it feel like a barn. If you plan ahead and don't go too big you can get a great steel building and use it as a barn for not that much money. Becky's Amazon Link: http://goo.gl/Y9Vgmj

My parents wanted a bench to go with the concrete fire pit I made for them. I decided to reuse the wooden forms from that project to make a bench. The bench consists of 2 blocks of concrete made from Quikrete 5000 and three 8-foot long 4x6s that I got from home depot. Four 4x4s would have worked just as well. I did this project in southern California so frost heave isn’t a problem, which is why I was able to do it without digging deeper. The wood isn’t actually attached to the concrete but rather sits within recesses in the concrete blocks. I am thinking about making the bench L-shaped in the future so I wanted to be able to disassemble it if needed. Follow us on Instagram to see what we're working on next! About 10 years ago, my friend Jim wanted to start making lumber. He had seem too many trees down in the woods and didn't want to leave them to rot. He figured that he would need a sawmill but instead of buying one, he decided to build one. The largest factor of why this mill is no longer used is safety. FILM DESCRIPTION: In this comedy, a cop assumes a new identity in his valiant battle against crime: an elderly grandmother! Malcolm Turner (Martin Lawrence) is an FBI agent who is a master of disguise and will stop at nothing to get his man. When a bank robber escapes from prison and goes on a violent crime spree, Malcolm is assigned to bring him in. The thief's girlfriend Sherry (Nia Long), who is also the mother of his child, lives in a small Southern town, and Malcolm plans to set up a stake-out in the house across the street from Sherry's. However, the house is owned by Big Momma (Ella Mitchell), an older woman with a sharp tongue and no patience for back talk, and when Big Momma has to leave town, it leaves her house suspiciously empty. Determined to maintain his cover, Malcolm disguises himself as Big Momma, and now has to convince Sherry (and everyone else in the neighborhood) that Big Momma's still in town. Big Momma's House gained considerable pre-production publicity when Lawrence fell into a coma while jogging in a heat wave before the film's start date; Lawrence claimed that he was trying to lose weight to fit more comfortably into his character's "fat suit." A 20ft Shipping Container can be a challenging space to work with when constructing a home. Thankfully, with years of experience building super-yachts and racing boats, shipwright Evans is no stranger to working in small spaces and when it came to building his own home he has done a truly spectacular job of, quite literally, thinking inside the box. This episode shows how to make a DIY modern industrial LED floor lamp from a reclaimed timber beam and steel, with NO WELDING! This LED lamp has a music reactive mode, and involves some interesting woodworking skills, metal working with no welding, and a touch of CNC (although CNC is not required). I collaborated with Jonny Builds on this floor lamp, and he brought a 60-year old reclaimed wood beam up from Oklahoma City. I wanted this lamp to match the modern industrial style of brick and timber loft. I’m pretty pumped how it came out – hopefully you all enjoy it too! Concrete and Steel Bar Cart on Jonny Builds’ channel: https://youtu.be/chE3jXFe6lY FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM: https://goo.gl/F4UdEs FOLLOW JONNY BUILDS ON INSTAGRAM: https://goo.gl/TKVNmw --MORE BUILD DETAILS-- We used a Shaper Origin router, combined with a traditional router, to create a cut-out for LED strips in the beam, and to cut matching white acrylic to serve as a diffuser for the LEDs. The Shaper Origin is similar to a CNC, but not exactly. I used SK6812 WWA individually controllable LEDs combined with an affordable off-the-shelf LED controller that has music reactive modes, chasing modes, and solid color modes, with an RF remote. (https://goo.gl/u6Xj6Y) Since I designed this for my own loft, the music reactive / sound reactive modes couldn’t be all that this lamp can do. It had to function and look like a normal lamp as well. With this in mind, I used the SK6812 warm white / cool white / amber LED strips, instead of RGB LED strips. In solid color mode, the LEDs can be adjusted via remote to give off various shades of white for a sophisticated modern look that hides the wild side when you switch the light to music visualizer mode. --PRODUCT & TOOL LINKS-- Shaper Origin: https://goo.gl/gVpjNb Vintage Reclaimed Lumber: https://goo.gl/XGRN8y (Note: Vintage Reclaimed Lumber did not sponsor this video, but did donate the beam to Jonny, who gave it to me.)
