How to Fix “Low Back” Pain (INSTANTLY!)

The irony is, a lot of times what we feel is rooted in the lower back is actually caused by muscles not in the back at all. In this video, I’m going to show you how the glute medius could be the real cause of your back pain and a quick exercise you can do to relieve your discomfort instantly. Once gone, I’m also going to show you a few additional exercises you can do to make sure your low back pain never returns. The gluteus medius is sandwiched between the glute maximus and minimus and lies in and around the hip area. The role of the muscle is to abduct your hip or lift your leg out to the side in either standing or side lying and to keep your pelvis level whenever you take a step. Prolonged sitting during the day as well as an unequal weight distribution when standing are two of the most common reasons for this muscle to get weak and imbalanced. You can quickly test to see if you have the makings of a weak glute medius by standing with your feet shoulder width apart and lifting one foot off the ground. First take note whether or not your opposite hip drops significantly. If it does, this would indicate a glute weakness on that side. You would repeat with the opposite foot as well. When you do this you would also want to see if you had to dramatically shift your weight to one side just to lift that foot off the ground. If you do, this would indicate that you have an unequal weight distribution when standing and it would be especially troublesome when squatting. To fix this quickly, you will want to lay down on the ground with your affected side on top. If your right lower back was bothering you then you would want to lie on your left hip. From here, take your thumb and place it on the area most sore. You should feel that this is going to happen just to the outside of the bony prominence of your pelvis. From here, push to hold back the trigger point and start flossing your leg down and in front of you and then back and up. Your hip should be extended and then lifted into abduction towards the ceiling (being sure to point the toes down to keep the glute medius in focus). Do this about 10 times until you feel the tension in the muscle release. Now, you can burn out the spasm in the trigger point by getting into the fully contracted position of the glute medius muscle and holding as long as you can. Generally, because this muscle is often very weak, this may not be any longer than 30 seconds to a minute. Once you cannot hold it any more you will stand up and you should notice an immediate relief of the pain on that side. This is the quick but not permanent fix for this problem. Since the underlying cause is weakness in the gluteus medius muscle you will want to back this up with some exercises for your low back that you can do a few times a week. I show you three options for this. The first is the hip bump against the wall. The second is called the sack swinger, and can be done with a dog leash if you don’t have a formal dip belt. The last is actually doing the same movement that you did for the treatment, but this time as a strengthening exercise for your low back. Whatever you do, just be sure you are consistent. You will also see that as you relieve the tension in this muscle that your squat performance improves as well. Your depth should be increased and any low back pain that you felt by doing the exercise should be gone since you will now be able to do them with equal force through each leg. TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is used to help reduce pain and increase circulation. Basically the vibration of the TENS follows the same pathway as the pain pathway to the brain and helps cancel it out. It is a great alternative to pain medication. Back Pain Relief Exercises & Stretches - Ask Doctor Jo

These back pain stretches and exercises are for general back pain like soreness from overworking your back or if you've pulled a muscle. If you know your specific back pain diagnosis, can check out the back pain section of my website for more specific exercises and stretches. See Doctor Jo’s blog post about this at: http://www.askdoctorjo.com/how-to-relieve-back-pain The first stretch is called the pelvic tilt. You will roll back onto your back with your knees bent. You want to imagine pushing your belly button into the ground, or push your back flat onto the ground like you are squishing something. You can put your hand under the curve of your back, and try to push your back into your hand. Make sure you are breathing and not holding your breath while doing these exercises. Next you will do a bridge. Push your bottom up off the ground, but try to do this slowly, and do one segment of your back at a time curling upward. Then slowly go down the same way, one segment at a time. Now you will do a single knee to chest stretch, bend one knee and bring your leg up to your chest as far as you comfortably can. Hold this for 30 seconds and do it three times on each side. Next, bring both knees to your chest, and hold it for 30 seconds doing it three times. This is called a double knee to chest stretch. Then try some gentle trunk rotation stretches on your back with your knees bent in hooklying. Gently rotate your bent legs from side to side. You can hold them on each side for 3-5 seconds or you can continuously rotate them back and forth. Again, try to keep your lower back on the ground. You can start off with 10 and work your way up to 20-25. The next stretch is the prayer stretch. Bring your butt back onto your heels, and keep your arms straight out. Relax your head down to the ground. Hold it for 30 seconds, and do it three times. Finally, you will do a combination move where you start in a plank position, and go into an upward dog yoga position. Hold that for 3-5 seconds, and then make a smooth transition into a downward dog position. You can go through this motion 3-5 times. Help relieve lower back pain during pregnancy with these simple exercises. For this video, I teamed up with Dr. Jen, a pelvic floor physical therapist who also happens to be pregnant! She'll show you her top 5 exercises to help relieve low back pain when you are pregnant by mobilizing and stabilizing the pelvis. Watch more videos at https://www.askdoctorjo.com The first exercise to help relieve low back pain during pregnancy is an anterior and posterior pelvic tilt. This is when you are emphasizing moving your hips forwards and backwards. The next lower back exercise is a lateral pelvic tilt, or moving your pelvis in a side to side direction. Now you will focus on stability with your core muscles including the diaphragm, pelvic floor, transversus abdominis, and multifidus muscles (deep spinal muscles). This should be done while you are breathing normally, so try not to hold your breath. After you achieve this, you can add in a bridge to activate the gluteus muscles. Then you will get onto all fours, or in quadruped. Then you will do pelvic tilts again, or some call it the cat/dog exercise or stretch. You can also do lateral tilts as well. Finally, you will do the child’s pose or prayer stretch. These back stretches are for general lower back pain. If you have a specific injury or diagnosis, some of these might not be appropriate, so check with your doctor or physical therapist first. These are a great way to start with to loosen up the low back and core muscles. The fourth low back stretch is a trunk rotation with crossing the leg over the body. This will give you more of a stretch in your low back, and it might also adjust your back. The next back pain stretches for the lower back are hamstring and hip flexor stretches. When either of these are tight, they can pull the pelvis one way or the other, and this can cause low back pain. Stretching them should relieve the tightness. The prone press, single knee to chest, and double knee to chest are also great stretches. Make sure you know what is going on with your back though since for certain diagnoses, you might not want to do these. The last low back stretch is the prayer stretch or child’s pose. It does a great job of stretching your whole body from your shoulders, upper back, lower back, hips, knees, and even your feet. Best Stretch for Middle Back Pain Relief, Back Injury Rehab & Recovery

This Standing Mid-Back Reach video is especially good for those in need of back pain relief, those who may have had sciatica treatment, disc herniation treatment, or other spinal treatment. For those in need of back pain treatment and back treatment receivers alike, one of the most annoying spots to feel back pain exists in the middle back region. You know the area -- it's that spot you can't quite reach to itch! Though it may seem hard to find useful stretches to target this area, there are actually some great moves that can help substantially. After a particularly grueling back workout, I happened to wake up with this type of pesky muscle discomfort. Granted, a lot of people do somehow injure themselves this way while actually sleeping (myself included), but middle back stiffness is associated most often with a lack of proper stretching. In my case, it was because of all the pulling exercises I was doing -- tightening up my back muscles through repeated rowing lifts. There are times when I make attempts to loosen those muscles up after I'm done, but after my last workout I just wanted out of the gym. The specific area in question, and the discomfort associated with it, has less to do with the larger trapezius muscle (extending from the back of your head down towards your lumbar spine), and more with the smaller, deeper muscles of the mid back (rhomboids). Because of the deeper aspect of the muscle, and again because of how hard it is to reach, it's difficult to do any self-massaging to make this soreness feel better. This video is especially good for those in need of back pain relief, those who may have had sciatica treatment, disc herniation treatment, or other spinal treatment. For those in need of back pain treatment and back treatment receivers alike, one of the most annoying spots to feel back pain exists in the middle back region. You know the area -- it's that spot you can't quite reach to itch! Though it may seem hard to find useful stretches to target this area, there are actually some great moves that can help substantially. After a particularly grueling back workout, I happened to wake up with this type of pesky muscle discomfort. Granted, a lot of people do somehow injure themselves this way while actually sleeping (myself included), but middle back stiffness is associated most often with a lack of proper stretching. In my case, it was because of all the pulling exercises I was doing -- tightening up my back muscles through repeated rowing lifts. There are times when I make attempts to loosen those muscles up after I'm done, but after my last workout I just wanted out of the gym. The specific area in question, and the discomfort associated with it, has less to do with the larger trapezius muscle (extending from the back of your head down towards your lumbar spine), and more with the smaller, deeper muscles of the mid back (rhomboids). Because of the deeper aspect of the muscle, and again because of how hard it is to reach, it's difficult to do any self-massaging to make this soreness feel better. This can also help with lower back pain and can be a replacement between your herniated disc treatment, sciatica treatment, low back pain treatment, sacroiliac joint treatment, Thai massage or other cranio-sacral treatment techniques, chiropractic appointments and other massage appointments. This yoga move is done by sitting down on your knees, with your legs underneath you. Lean your entire body forward, tucking your chin into your chest, and resting the top of your head onto the ground.
