Often, people are told that something in an X-ray or MRI is the reason they have pain. This could be a labral tear, arthritis, or cam or pincer bone shapes called femoroacetabular impingement (FAI/hip impingement). It's important to remember that none of these things have been shown to be definitively linked to hip pain. In fact, in study after study, there is no relationship between the severity of labral tears, arthritis, or FAI bone shapes and pain. The second mistake is stopping all movement. Often doctors will tell you stop moving because it will accelerate damage to your hips. If you're familiar with the history of back pain and spinal fusion surgery, this may sound familiar. For years, if you had chronic back pain, doctors would look at X-rays and MRIs for signs of arthritis, degenerative discs, and other pathologies. Surgery was often considered the best option when a few months of rest and/or physical therapy failed. Over the decades, high quality research has shown that long periods of bed rest actually make things worse, that spinal fusion is not better than long term exercise based, non-invasive treatment, and that spinal fusion itself doesn't reliably relieve back pain! This is a familiar pattern that happened with shoulder impingement, knee meniscus tears, and seems to now be happening with hip surgeries. The third most common mistake with hip pain is giving up too soon on non-invasive approaches. A spine surgeon, Dr. David Hanscom, wrote a book about how to get out of back pain without surgery. After years of performing spinal fusions and seeing their disappointing results, he strongly advises that people dedicate themselves to lengthy, detailed exercise regimens before ever considering surgery. And if first attempts at therapy or training fail, he strongly suggests that people be patient and diligently seek out other help and other ways to help their muscles. You need to learn about your unique body and what it uniquely needs. Hip Arthritis Stretches & Exercises - Ask Doctor Jo

These hip arthritis stretches and exercises are easy to do in the comfort of your home and should provide some pain relief. See Doctor Jo's blog post about this at http://www.askdoctorjo.com/content/hip-arthritis-stretches-exercises The first exercise will be sitting down. Make sure your back is against the chair, and your knees and hips are at about a 90 degree angle. Then you will bring your knee straight up towards the ceiling, and this is called a hip flexion exercise. Make sure you do slow and controlled movements. Start off with 10 and work your way up to 20-25. If those become easy, then you can add ankle weights. The next exercise will be a sit to stand. Again, you want this to be controlled movements. Try not to just pop up and plop down. Put your feet about shoulder width apart and lean forward as you stand up, then stick your bottom back and have your chest forward while you sit back down. Try to also keep your feet flat and your knees behind your toes when doing this. If that is easy, you can just tap your bottom on the chair and not sit all the way back down. Start off with 10 of these, and then work your way up to 20-25. So now get down on the ground, and you will stretch out those hip flexor muscles. Keep the knee of the leg you want to stretch on the ground, and then bring the other leg up into a lunge like position. Try to keep your back upright and straight. If you lean forward with your upper body, you won’t get a good stretch. Shift your hips forward until you feel a stretch in front of the thigh. Hold this for 30 seconds and do three of them. Lying down on the ground in supine or on your back, you will do a hip abduction exercise. With your legs straight out, try to keep your toes pointing up toward the ceiling through the whole movement. Then slowly slide your leg out to the side, and then slide it back in. Start off with 10 of these. If you get to 20-25 and they are easy, then you don’t need to do them in this position anymore. Now roll onto your side for the clamshell exercise. This one is harder than it looks. You want to keep your hips straight up and down, perpendicular to the floor. Your hips will want to roll back, but keep them up as much as you can. Then keeping your knees together with one on top of the other, bend your knees slightly towards your body. Then lift the top leg up slightly, like a clamshell opening up. It doesn’t have to be a big movement because you want to keep your hips from moving. Start off with 10 of these, and then work your way up to 20-25. If they become easy, you can add a weight or use a resistive band. The last exercise is a bridge. Even though this is a simple movement, it really works the hamstrings and glut muscles. Lie on your back with your knees propped up. Slowly lift your butt off the ground until your hips are in a straight line with your chest and knees. You can go one segment of the spine at a time to really loosen up your back. Start off with 10 of these, and then work your way up to 20-25. Hip arthritis can cause pain all around the hip and in the groin area. It can also be painful when you walk. These hip arthritis stretches and exercises should help make the hip area stronger to relieve the pain. See Doctor Jo’s blog post about this at: http://www.askdoctorjo.com/hip-arthritis-stretches-exercises The first stretch is called the pelvic tilt. You will roll back onto your back with your knees bent. You want to imagine pushing your belly button into the ground, or push your back flat onto the ground like you are squishing something. You can put your hand under the curve of your back, and try to push your back into your hand. Make sure you are breathing and not holding your breath while doing these exercises. Next you will do a bridge. Push your bottom up off the ground, but try to do this slowly, and do one segment of your back at a time curling upward. Then slowly go down the same way, one segment at a time. Now you will do a four way hip lying down. Start off lying on your back. For all of these you want to try to keep your leg straight by locking out your knee, and pull your toes towards your nose to activate the muscles in your leg. Slowly raise your leg to about the other side where the knee is bent, and then slowly come back down. Then roll onto your side with the leg you want to work on the bottom for hip adduction. You can place your bent knee on top in front of or behind the leg on the ground, which ever is more comfortable. You won’t be able to lift your leg high without rolling your hips. Then you will roll to the other side for hip abduction. Keep your leg straight, and try to lead with your heel and take your leg slightly behind you to engage the glut muscles. Then you will roll over onto your stomach for hip extension. You won’t be able to lift your leg very high with this one either. Do all of these ten times, and work your way up to 20-25. The next exercise will be a plank on your elbows. You can do this modified with your knees bent and on the ground, or you can get into a full plank position. Make sure your elbow lines up with your shoulder, and that your body is in a straight line. Hold this for about 20-30 seconds, and work your way up to a minute. Now you are going to get onto all fours or in the quadruped position. Try to keep your hands directly underneath your shoulders, and try to keep your back in a straight line, no arching up or down. Kick one leg straight out behind you, and raise the opposite arm at the same time. Some people call this the bird dog. Do ten on each side. If you, just like 15 to 25 percent of people in the US, suffer from chronic knee pain, or just get tired sore feet from constantly being on the go, pay attention to these 6 exercises to cure chronic knee, foot or hip pain. You don’t need an expensive treatment if you regularly perform the simple workout at home. Knees are the second largest source of recurrent pain, and once you add in the feet and hips, it turns out that the legs can cause big problems for a lot of people. Simple tip-toeing, besides strengthening your calves, helps improve your balance by reducing the area in contact with the ground, which makes keeping your balance quite a challenge. It strengthens your glutes and core muscles, improves your posture while simultaneously relieving back pain, increases the flexibility of your ankles, stretches the muscles around your shins, which are an otherwise difficult muscle group to target. Heel raises, ankle circles, resistance training and toe games are all effective exercises for relieving pain in different parts of your legs. Try to do rolling foot massage on a daily basis and do as many reps as you want or have time for. It gives the bottom of your foot a nice stretch and prevents foot-related injuries in the long run. They tend to be underdeveloped, which can be a big problem since they support your arches, keep your toes properly aligned, and even contribute to balance. -Rolling foot massage works the muscles in the heels and balls of your feet. It’s also a nice relaxing massage for your arches. -If your feet are killing you after a long day, use one thumb to put pressure on the spot between your big toe and pointer toe and use the other thumb to press the point between your ring toe and pinky toe.
