So what can you when you get the sweet tooth? Raw honey is a great substitute that won’t spike your insulin and actually has a ton of amino acids, vitamins, minerals and enzymes. 2. Refined grains Pasta, bread, and pizza are delicious. However, most of them are made out of refined grains. Refined grains are high on the glycemic index and can spike your blood sugar levels, leading to weight gain and type II diabetes. One study found that eating just two slices of white bread per day was linked to a 40% greater risk of weight gain and obesity (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25335643/). In the process of refinement, the bran and germ of the grain are removed, along with most of the nutrients. But don’t worry, you can still eat grains - just make sure they’re whole. 3. All sodas and sugary drinks, diet or not What goes for sugar goes for sugary drinks as well. If sugar is just empty calories, then sugary drinks are liquid calories. The problem with these is that we don’t really detect them. You can drink a whole meal’s worth of calories and still be hungry. A single bottle of Coca-Cola “only” has 184 calories, but even if you just have one or two a day, they add up quickly. The best solution is to simply cut them out completely and drink water. 4. Alcohol Alcohol has more calories per gram than carbs or protein - 7. That means it is easy to go over your week’s calories on a Friday night out. But it’s not just the calories. Alcohol is a poison to the body. When you drink it, the liver burns alcohol instead of fat - stopping your fat burning for several hours. For example, a regular beer has 150 calories. A few of those, and some fast food at the end of the night can quickly come out to over 1000 in calories. If you want to drink, do it in moderation. 5. Salt Unlike most of this list, salt is the one thing you shouldn’t give up on. The two minerals found in it - sodium and chloride - are both necessary for optimal function of the body. Going too low leads to higher LDL levels, increased insulin resistance, increased risk of death from heart disease, heart failure and type II diabetes. Glutathione Detox: The Science of Glutathione and Alcohol – Thomas DeLauer… Your body can have its own glutathione detox! Glutathione and Alcohol is a huge question, how does it actually work? More at http://www.thomasdelauer.com What is Glutathione? Glutathione (GSH) is a peptide made up of three amino acids - glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. GSH is produced by every cell in our bodies. It is an antioxidant that works within cells. Aerobic cells in our body require oxygen. During the cellular processes that occur, ROS (reactive oxygen species) occur. When cells are injured even more ROS will be produced. ROS are not always bad. They are necessary for cell survival, but when there are too many produced it can lead to cell damage and death. When the levels of ROS raise, our bodies work to balance this out and regain homeostasis through the production of antioxidants, such as GSH. GSH: -Protects against oxidative damage and environmental toxins -Disposes peroxides (natural bleaching agents that cause harm in the body) -Participates in metabolic processes -Maintains intracellular health -Boosts immune system Due to its properties, GSH: -Protects brain health -Protects liver and other organs from damage -May protect against many other diseases due to cell damage, including Alzheimer’s, cancers and AIDs It has been found that most patients in the hospitals for conditions such as cancer and AIDs have depleted GSH levels. So what are the ways that we understand presently that GSH benefits our health? Brain Health: The cells of the brain make up 2% of our body weight while consuming 20% of the oxygen used in the body. The makes brain cells particularly at risk to oxidative damage. GSH is important in the detoxification processes of reactive oxygen species in the brain. Under normal conditions GSH synthesis is determined by cysteine availability and the activity of an enzyme called GCL (glutamate-cysteine ligase). Cysteine comes from the diet, protein breakdown and the liver. The amount of GSH present in the brain is dependent upon how much of the precursors are present. Different kinds of brain cells require different precursors. Liver: Helps the liver remove chemicals, such as drugs and environmental toxins. Glutathione is produced by the liver in response to alcohol consumption. When alcohol comes into contact with enzymes in your mouth, Acetaldehyde forms. Acetaldehyde is extremely toxic. When the remainder of the alcohol reaches your liver, it is processed into Acetaldehyde and your liver produces glutathione, which attacks the acetaldehyde to form a non-toxic substance similar to vinegar. Cancer: Oxidative stress can lead to cancer, and GSH can help protect against oxidative stress. This is how GSH can help to protect your body from cancer. There is an instance where medical professionals may desire to reduce the GSH in your cells, and that is when fighting cancer cells with chemotherapy. High GSH levels in tumor cells can make them difficult to fight. There is other evidence that GSH supplementation may help to reduce chemotherapy side effects and thus make it more effective, so this is currently under debate. How to Get Enough GSH: While studies have shown that elevated GSH levels can benefit health, exactly how to boost these levels is still debated. Supplements have not been proven to be an effective way to boost cellular GSH. Intravenous GSH was shown in one study to boost the survival rates and decrease the side effects from chemotherapy in women with ovarian cancer. It is likely that taking precursor supplements of cysteine may boost GSH levels. The National Institutes of Health reports that our kidneys filter an excess of 200 quarts of blood daily. That translates into 2 quarts of waste each day. They don’t get holidays or weekends off; they work day and night. Thankfully, our kidneys can wash away impurities while retaining vital nutrients floating around in our blood. Keeping our internal filters healthy and functioning properly is invaluable for nourishment and detoxification of our bodies. So naturally, whatever we eat and drink has a dramatic impact on our kidneys’ health. A steady diet of unhealthy food and drinks can strain their performance, and put us at risk. The good news is, it’s never too late to improve your diet and lifestyle, even if your kidneys are already impaired. In today’s video we will see how our kidneys react to too much consumption of 8 different foods and beverages. 1. Red meat We’ve all heard that protein is good for our health. But too much of anything can be harmful. For example, a diet that is high in red meat, which contains lots of animal protein, can damage our kidneys. The reason? Our kidneys need to metabolism this protein. When there’s a conveyor belt of rich protein headed toward the kidneys for cleansing, they just can’t keep up with the pace. When kidneys can’t eliminate waste products, there will be a build-up of acidic residue in our body. It’s always good to talk to your health care professional about the diet that’s right for you. 2. Alcohol Just like eating too much red meat can strain our kidneys, the same is true with too much alcohol; they will be unable to properly filter our blood. Also, too much alcohol can cause dehydration. This creates a domino effect: if our blood is dehydrated, our cells and organs will not be able to function properly. 3. Table Salt While our bodies require sodium to maintain proper fluid balance – especially in our electrolytes - an excess amount will cause kidneys to retain water. Too much salt can also increase the amount of protein that is eliminated in urine. 4. Caffeine Caffeine is a stimulant which millions of people depend upon every morning to help them become fully awake. But all of that caffeine in coffee, tea and sodas can jolt your kidneys into overdrive. The stimulant accelerates blood flow, which in turn increases blood pressure. Caffeine has another effect – it can lead to dehydration, just as salt can. Too much dehydration can lead to kidney stones. Most health experts recommend you drink no more than 2 cups of coffee or 3 cups of tea daily. Soda and energy drinks are beverages you may want to eliminate completely. Another source of caffeine is cocoa, which should also be consumed moderately. 5. Artificial Sweeteners Refined sugar has had a bad rap lately. That’s why companies began creating artificial sweeteners. It may sound better for our health, but they can still negatively impact kidney function. Try instead to steer away from artificial sweeteners and use stevia or honey to flavor your food and beverages. 6. Dairy Products While dairy products are an excellent source of protein, they should be consumed in moderation, especially for anyone who has kidney disease. The reason? Too many dairy products will increase calcium in urine which can lead to kidney stones. Also, as kidneys are overworked, they won’t be able to regulate protein waste and it will rise to an unhealthy level. 7. Carbonated Beverages Sodas and energy drinks are usually the chief instigator for kidney problems; they are loaded with caffeine, sugar or artificial sweeteners. They may taste better than thirst-quenching water or lemon water but they aren’t providing any health benefits for your kidneys. 8. Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs) In recent years, crops have been the recipient of various forms of herbicides and pesticides. This includes everything from strawberries to rice. How to Prevent Liver Cancer|drinking and liver cancer Liver cancer is a terrible disease. It does not just affect your liver, but also the way your entire body works. Liver cancer is often caused by chronic alcohol abuse as well as exposure to hepatitis B or C, so it is important to understand how to prevent contracting these types of hepatitis when considering liver cancer prevention. While it’s true that liver cancer is a life-threatening condition, there are some things you can do to help prevent yourself from getting it in the first place. Some lifestyle and dietary changes may be necessary to help you avoid liver cancer. 1 Quit smoking. If you smoke, you should quit. If you don’t smoke, continue to stay away from cigarettes. This is an important step. Avoiding cigarettes is crucial, not only to prevent liver cancer, but smoking cigarettes negatively affects your whole body as well. Try to quit smoking by reducing your cigarette consumption a little bit every day or by using cessation aids like nicotine patches. If you have trouble quitting smoking, contact your doctor for more support. If you don't smoke, stay away from people who do. Second-hand smoke is bad for you and can lead to increased risk of liver cancer as well. Watch the level of alcohol you ingest. Over time, drinking large quantities of alcohol can lead to cirrhosis, or scarring, of the liver which can contribute to liver cancer. Try to avoid drinking too much, specifically over long periods of time. Binge drinking (having more than five drinks in one sitting) is especially damaging to your liver. Consider completely eliminating alcohol to minimize the impact it may have on your liver. To maintain your health, women can drink up to one drink per day and men can drink up to two drinks per day. One drink is considered 12 fluid ounces of beer, 5 fluid ounces of wine, or 1.5 fluid ounces of distilled spirits. Don't get drunk just because your peers persuade you into drinking. And don’t drink if you are underage. 3 Stay away from drugs that were not prescribed by your doctor. Certain drugs can increase your risk of liver cancer. Your liver metabolizes any drug you ingest, so exposing your liver to potentially harmful drugs over long periods of time could lead to developing liver cancer. One such risk factor is taking anabolic steroids like Anadrol, Oxandrin, or Winstrol. This also includes male hormones like testosterone. Watch out for cancer causing agents. Exposure to certain chemicals greatly increases your risk of cancer, especially in the liver. One of the main functions of the liver is to metabolize drugs and detoxify chemicals. So if you are exposed to cancer-causing chemicals, they will go straight to your liver. Things to avoid include arsenic and aflatoxin (a rare type of mold). Some research has indicated that exposure to triclosan (an ingredient in many detergents and soaps) may cause liver fibrosis and liver cancer.
