I discuss in detail: - Bisociation - Trusting the design process - Embracing constraints - Inventing deadlines - Doing the opposite (anti-project) - Subtracting to solve - Stealing (like an artist) These are just a few of the design hacks I use to help grease the creative wheels and instill the confidence I need to keep moving forward. What's great is these techniques work for a whole host of disciplines and creative fields, it isn't exclusive to architecture. Draw like an Architect - Essential Tips

11:52
In this video I share my tips for improving your architectural drawing technique. I'll walk you through a detail sketch, a basic section sketch and then transition into a few of my CAD working drawings to illustrate how a simple toolset can produce a range of drawings. Important concepts discussed: - Lineweight (and the pens I use) - Atmospheric perspective - Drawing technique - Corners - Iteration - Foreground, middle-ground, and background - The 'squint' test - Shade + shadow - Entourage (http://www.mrcutout.com/ , http://skalgubbar.se/ , http://pimpmydrawing.com/ ) In the end, it’s not about copying my drawing style or anyone else’s. It’s about developing your own and the best way to do that is by seeking out the architectural drawings you like and try and duplicate their results. Study their commonalities, how do they differ from the way you draw? Some of my favorites are found in the Detail in Contemporary Residential architecture books or Detail magazines…all the German stuff. // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? Developing the Architectural Concept - Architecture Short Course (Part 2)

13:27
Developing the architectural concept into floor plans, designing the form, and refining the spatial ideas are all covered in part 2 of our architecture short course. The first step in making the abstract concept real is to sketch a floor plan and then give that plan a three-dimensional form. A floor plan is a quick way of describing the hierarchy and relationship of spaces and it begins fixing their real physical dimensions and shapes. Throughout the design process architects must continually consider the design in both the plan, or overhead view, and the sectional, or volumetric view. The easiest way I’ve found to do this is to begin by sketching a plan and then construct a three-dimensional version of that plan either in model form or by sketching. In order to get to three dimensions, we have to make some decisions about form, space, and order. When we speak about form we’re referring not only to a building’s shape but also to its size, scale, color, and texture…basically, all the visual properties of an object. Form has a direct relationship to space in that it influences both interior and exterior rooms. And lastly, order is how we choose to orient and relate the forms and spaces to each other. This directs the inhabitant’s experience of a place. We'll review strategies for refining the floor plan, designing meaningful building forms, editing, and converting two-dimensional abstract concepts into three-dimensional buildings. Architecture Client Presentation

A behind-the-scenes look at a typical architecture client presentation for a residential project currently in design. I’ll show you the drawings, models, material samples and imagery I've developed for my clients to review at a recent meeting. Although I wasn’t able to sneak you in for the actual meeting (that’s been difficult to arrange with private clients) I’ve done the next best thing and that is to share with you the thinking and methodology that goes into every single client meeting. Together we’ll review the agenda and how I structure it, all the documents, images, and materials I compile. I discuss the importance of building a coherent story and narrative, how to structure your relationship as a collaboration, why I don’t believe in final renderings, and the special importance sketching has in a meeting environment. Architecture Short Course: How to Develop a Design Concept

19:24
All architecture begins with a concept. If you’re struggling to find one, curious about what one is, or wondering how architects begin their projects; this short course will walk you through the process I use and some of the techniques I rely on to develop architectural concepts all illustrated with one of my residential projects. Design is a dialogue, and the concept ensures you have something to talk about. In this video I discuss the precise steps I take when beginning each project and how those steps lead me to an architectural concept. Before we can develop the concept, we have to first understand the practical constraints. My design process begins only after gathering and assessing all the given parameters for a project. Now, this primarily consists of three types of information. There’s information derived from the site - things like: local climate, the prevailing winds, the solar aspect, vegetation, neighboring structures, the site’s history, and any unique liabilities or opportunities. The site of course also comes along with legal frameworks for development, which describe where and what we can and can’t build. The second type of information we’ll gather is from the client. Every client has a set of cultural beliefs and preconceptions, preferences and agendas. Of course, we’ll want to determine their budget, and understand the personality traits and organizational politics which might also shape the design. The client and the building type together determine what architects call, “the program” which is essentially a detailed accounting of all the spaces the building will contain. And the third type of information I gather is related to the building typology – is it a museum, a home…or a school for example? To learn about a building typology we often conduct an analysis of notable or relevant historical precedents. We want to know the essential problems these types of structures grapple with. Understanding the history of the archetype allows us to approach a problem from a fresh perspective. All of this is necessary information that we collect for every project. This inventory can also serve as the progenitor for the design concept – our seed idea. And, rather than shunting creativity, these constraints often incite the creative process. Concept Inspirations Discussed: - Site - Client - Narrative - Materials - Structural - Mainifestos - Formal As with a good film, the setting, the characters, the cinematography, and the plot all conspire to make it what it is. It’s the experience you’ll recall rather than the concept per se. Sure, the concept sets the film in motion and it’s the starting point for all that follows. But this concept – the one or two-line description – can’t possible capture the richness and depth of the finished film…or in our case the architecture. Yet without it, the work is unfulfilling and so it should be clear that the concept is necessary for all our work as architects. // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? Building Cost + How It Impacts Design (An Architect's Guide) | Architecture Short Course (Part 3)

14:34
Building cost has a direct impact on our design and it's one of the most basic and obvious concerns for architects and clients. In this video I'll show you how I use it as a creative constraint that informs our building design. Building cost is divided into two general categories: soft and hard costs. Soft costs are the indirect cost of design: architectural fees, consultant fees, permitting, financing, and legal fees. Hard costs are all the cost directly attributed to the construction of the physical building. Early on in the design process we know little about the building and so we use square footage as a means for estimating the building's cost to construct. But square footage alone won't provide all the information we need to properly describe the cost of a structure, some spaces cost more to build than others. Factoring the square footage provides an added level of precision and allows clients and architects to better plan how design affects the overall budget. Planning for unforeseeable conditions is important as well and I describe how much of a contingency to add to the project at each phase of the work. Cost considerations are crucial to realizing both our client's project and our vision for the work in the world and this video shares the framework I use to get there. // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? Home Audio PROBLEM Areas!!! Where to Apply Acoustic Foam Treatment & Bass Traps For Standing Waves

11:14
Let's uncover some common PROBLEMS with a new home theater room, shall we!?!? This video will break down what steps we'll take when treating the ideal space with cheap acoustic foam panels and bass traps. Get ready for more videos and remember to subscribe :) Thanks For Supporting :) http://instagram.com/EXOcontralto http://www.patreon.com/EXOcontralto http://www.facebook.com/EXOcontralto http://www.youtube.com/user/EXOcontralto DIY Standing Speaker Tower (BUILD LOG VIDEO) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gG9UVR-reII THE ORIGINAL Blurb (from 2015) These "do it yourself" cabinets were originally designed as passive bipole speakers; when 2 sets of drivers are mounted opposite one another, whose frequencies are played IN PHASE with one another (unlike dipole enclosures which play out of phase) But plans changed, so we made this design. Going the floor standing route also freed up having to make a stand, or multiple stands. So in the end, we chose a combination of sealed and ported chambers for optimum sound quality. Porting to the front also allowed us to locate the speaker against a wall. Additional bracing and acoustic foams was added to prevent the ports from having unwanted high frequency resonance, like that annoying echo we all dislike. Especially bass frequencies. The double baffle also helped with this. And with our 4 chamber setup, each partition doubled with mdf panels as braces - making the box extremely inert, and fully dampened. Each is driver crossed over on a Behringer DCX2496 active crossover, and the xover points change according to how I feel that day :D The listening room is well, less than perfect - but still a good space for playing demo trailers, movies and music. However, during testing, distinguished standing waves were noticed in 3 places throughout the area. These types of issues, comb filtering especially, are the greatest and most difficult problems small rooms encounter. Thus, it's very smart to have plans built around the specific geometry of a room. That's the only way to build a high end home audio cabinet, after all, rooms place affect sound even more than speakers do! Stay tuned this week as we learn how to build custom DIY speaker grills and apply with neodymium magnets! The grill will help keep her clean. How to make an architectural portfolio (for Architects, Interns and Students)

16:24
If you're making an architectural portfolio, or yours needs a refresh, this is your how-to guide. We'll review the key differences between paper and digital portfolios, and you'll learn why the best portfolio is the one you're able to keep updated with fresh content. I recommend you craft your portfolio as an integral part of a broader web-based promotion strategy. Your portfolio should - if possible - be available (and searchable) on your own, self-hosted website. Digital portfolio options: - App-based - on a tablet for example (Morpholio, Portfolio, etc.) - PDF - a document you can print or share - Web platform - hosted on someone else's platform (Behance, Issu, Coroflot, Houzz) - Website (self-hosted) - you own the domain, you control the online real estate. The only option I recommend today is the self-hosted website portfolio. I recommend using Squarespace to get started if you don't have one already. Their templates are modern, minimal, and you'll spend time on filling it with great work rather than fussing over the layout - the container. I recommend you take cues from the portfolios of other architects you'd like to work for or whose work you'd like to emulate. Study how they're compiling their portfolios. Learn from them. What to include: 1) Sketches 2) Academic vs. Built work 3) Models 4) Renders What Not to Include: 1) Work you didn't design 2) Old work 3) Lengthy text 4) Spelling errors 5) Poor photography 6) Construction documents 7) Irrelevant work experience 8) Hobbies I also discuss the best way to share your portfolio via email and let you in on an opportunity to have your portfolio reviewed by me on the channel (hint: you have to be a subscriber). // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS - CAN'T HOLD US FEAT. RAY DALTON (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)

Note from Ryan Lewis: It seems like when a music video comes out, the title that receives all of the credit and travels with a film is that of the director. It's as though the director is the "artist" or "creator" of the music video, when in reality a music video is first a written treatment, produced (putting together ingredients like actors and locations), shot and directed, cut on the editing board and finally color graded. The music might be fine tuned and scored specifically for that film. There are so many variables that are completely equal if not sometimes more complicated than directing, it's a shame that so much credit comes down to whoever fulfills that position. A director wouldn't have shit to direct without a producer. A producer would have nothing to produce without a writer, and so forth. For our team, I think it's even more complicated because roles tend to cross over. We simply don't work within the conventional hierarchy of the film industry (director, producer, etc.) Sure, people have concrete pre-defined roles based on their expertise, but our team has the remarkable ability to wear multiple hats. Can't Hold Us was a video that showcased this well. After three months of shooting, finally getting to those last few frames where you reveal the credits, it's a tense moment. There isn't exactly a sensible way to do it, if we're trying to fit people into classic film roles. It leads me to the point that although we do our best to give people titles, this was a video fully created by seven individuals at the forefront. Take any of those people out of the equation, you'd be watching a very different video. I write this in hopes that you don't fall under the illusion that one person creates a music video, particularly at the Macklemore camp. We are constantly challenging and enhancing each others ideas and I take pride in believing that's the reason we make great videos. - Ryan Lewis Music Video: Written By Ben Haggerty Ryan Lewis Tricia Davis Directed By Ryan Lewis Jason Koenig Jon Jon Augustavo Produced By Tricia Davis Honna Kimmerer Jenny Koenig Starring Ben Haggerty Ryan Lewis Ray Dalton Owuor Arunga Da Kadu Brown Director of Photography Jason Koenig Ryan Lewis Mego Lin Stedicam Operators Chris Duerkopp Rhys Duncan Ant Ireland Alex Kornreich Production Assistants Linda SImonsen Jackie Ganger Edward Tran Adam Leeman Nic Adenau Johnny Valencia Ben Campofreda Seth McDonald Mitchell Overton Lei Tao Editing & Color Grading Ryan Lewis Jason Koenig Post Production Supervisor Erik Hustad Special Thanks RED Panavision Victory Studios Koerner Camera Space Needle Ryan Sanson Lady Washington Logan Neitzel Sierra Blu Kennels USC FIJI House Niche Camera Karen Stimwell & Co. One Book EVERY Designer Should Own

03:05
A review of one of my all-time favorite books; one I think every designer should own. Part review and part personal reflection, it's a continuation of my previous video on goal setting. As I struggled with my traditional goal setting exercise this year, I stumbled on a new methodology and consulted this formative book in my library about the life and work of Dieter Rams for guidance. It's a book I think should be in every designer's collection and in this video I share how it's shaped my architecture practice and my approach to life. I view books as the raw materials of creativity. Looking at and learning from the work of others is crucial to the development of your personal style and I encourage sampling from every possible source you can: graphic designers, authors, engineers, sculptors, every field relies on some measure of creativity. The deeper your understanding of what’s out there the more source material you have to draw upon and the more things you can smash together to craft your own style. Dieter Rams designed more than 500 products over his forty-two-year career at Braun; he’s regarded as one of the most influential industrial designers of the 20th century yet the path that led him there was anything but premeditated. The happenstance of it is as empowering as it is unsettling. This volume explains the history and events that shaped his personal esthetic. Be sure to add this book to your library for context, depth and to understand the true measure of Herr Rams' contribution to the design world. Study it, not to replicate his style (you don’t want to look like him) but to see like him. And a special thanks to my grandfather, whose counsel I miss each day, but who will always live on in my studio and work. // GEAR I USE // DRONE: *Mavic Pro by DJI: http://amzn.to/2hW3dTA DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 6DMKII http://thirtybyforty.com/6dmkii * Canon 80D: http://amzn.to/2fBWGMQ LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI * Canon 10 - 18mm f4.5 - 5.6 IS Lens: http://amzn.to/2vyErvS * Canon 24-70mm f2.8L Lens: http://amzn.to/2DMt0Y5 MUSIC I USE: * http://thirtybyforty.com/music AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Copic Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/copic-sketch * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap CAD DRAWING TEMPLATE: * Download here: http://thirtybyforty.com/autocad-template STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? A Day in the Life of an Architect | Architecture vlog

14:46
Follow a typical day in the life of an architect. Part architecture vlog, part behind-the-scenes look at some of the tasks architects work on each day: from designing a set of elevations to managing projects in construction, to writing specifications, to managing an office, and how to deal with the inevitable creative blocks creatives face on a daily basis. I intentionally structure my day to be divided between making in the morning and managing in the afternoons, with a mid-day transition break for exercise. Learn why this works for me and follow along as I work through some of the most common struggles an architect faces in daily professional practice. For aspiring architects, architecture students, and those curious about exactly what it is that architects do each day. In future vlogs I hope to be able to show more of the construction coordination and dialogue that happens outside of the studio as this is where so many decisions are made. // GEAR I USE // DRONE: *Mavic Pro by DJI: http://amzn.to/2hW3dTA DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 6DMKII http://thirtybyforty.com/6dmkii * Canon 80D: http://amzn.to/2fBWGMQ LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI * Canon 10 - 18mm f4.5 - 5.6 IS Lens: http://amzn.to/2vyErvS * Canon 24-70mm f2.8L Lens: http://amzn.to/2DMt0Y5 MUSIC I USE: * http://thirtybyforty.com/music AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Copic Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/copic-sketch * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap CAD DRAWING TEMPLATE: * Download here: http://thirtybyforty.com/autocad-template STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? Project images: http://pinterest.com/ericreinholdt In the second video in our multi-part series on architectural model making we review my favorite model making materials and reasons you might choose one material over another. Stick around at the end for 12 quick material tips. Material selection will be dependent – for the most part - on the model’s purpose as we discussed in part 1 and it’s the one factor that will most directly impact the finished cost of your model – in both real dollars and in time. More luxurious materials require more care to work with and are often less forgiving than inexpensive ones. For this reason, you’ll typically want to save the expensive materials for the more finished, presentation quality models or you may choose to use them strategically to highlight one particular portion of your model you want a client (or jury) to focus on. I review in detail the following materials: 1) Cardstock (paper) 2) Kraft paper 3) Trace 4) Mylar 5) Corrugated cardboard 6) Chipboard 7) Foam 8) Foam core (and why I dislike it so!) 9) Clay 10) Museum board 11) Wood 12) Cork 13) Sheet plastics I list a few unconventional materials too, things like: matchsticks, florist wire, guitar strings, sandpaper, zip ties, plaster, concrete, and wire screening. At the end of the video I leave you with 12 quick material-based pro tips to motivate and inspire you. What are your favorite materials? Have I left any out? In the next video we'll take a tour of my studio and look at my model making toolkit. Please share if you found this information helpful...I invest a lot of time making each video and want to help as many as possible!
