Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition where the airways in the lungs are inflamed and narrowed causing breathlessness, wheezing, chest tightness and coughing. Symptoms come as recurrent episodes known as asthmatic attacks most commonly at night or early in the morning. Pathology of asthma: The lungs contain millions of air tubes or airways, called bronchi and bronchioles, which bring air in and out of the body. The airways have a layer of smooth muscle in their wall which enables them to constrict or dilate. In people suffering from asthma these airways are inflamed, narrowed and become more sensitive to certain substances. Asthmatic attack, or exacerbation, happens when the airways react to these substances. During an attack, the smooth muscle contracts, squeezing the airways, making them even narrower; mucus secretion is also increased which further obstructs the airways. Asthma is most commonly considered as an inflammatory response disease where the body’s immune system over-reacts to certain environmental agents. Causes of asthma are complex and not fully understood but likely involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Family history is a known risk factor for asthma. There are at least over twenty genes associated with asthma of which many are involved in the immune system. Triggers are factors that initiate the attack. Common triggers include: - allergens, such as pollen, animal fur, pet dander, sulfites in preserved food.. - irritants, such as cigarette smoke, industrial chemicals, dust, household chemicals,.. - medications, such as aspirin, beta blockers,.. - physical activities, exercises. There is no cure for asthma. The most effective way to manage symptoms is to identify the triggers of asthmatic attacks and avoid them. There are two main classes of medication: - Bronchodilators - substances that dilate bronchi and bronchioles - are used as short-term relief of symptoms. - Inflammation moderators such as corticosteroids are taken as long-term treatments. Asthma inhalers are used to deliver the medication to the lungs. A number of conditions tend to occur more frequently in people with asthma and should be taken into account when treating asthma: - Allergies, such as eczema and hay fever. These individuals are considered hyper-allergic – they have high tendency to develop allergic reactions. The combination of these conditions is known as atopy or atopic syndrome. Immunotherapy may be recommended for this group of patients. - Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD - a condition in which stomach acid backs up and damages the mucosal lining of the esophagus. GERD may worsen asthma symptoms and medications for asthma often worsen GERD symptoms. Treating GERD usually improves asthma and must be included in an asthma treatment plan. - Obstructive sleep apnea or OSA – obstruction of the airway at the throat level during sleep. Asthmatic patients are at higher risks of developing OSA. The mechanism of this association is largely unknown. - Sinusitis: inflammation of paranasal sinuses. Sinusitis commonly worsens asthma symptoms and makes treatments less effective.

Asthma can be minor or it can interfere with daily activities. In some cases, it may lead to a life-threatening attack. Asthma may cause difficulty breathing, chest pain, cough, and wheezing. The symptoms may sometimes flare-up. Asthma can usually be managed with rescue inhalers to treat symptoms (albuterol) and controller inhalers that prevent symptoms (steroids). Severe cases may require longer-acting inhalers that keep the airways open (formoterol, salmeterol, tiotropium), as well as oral steroids. People may experience: Cough: can occur at night, during exercise, can be chronic, dry, with phlegm, mild, or severe Respiratory: difficulty breathing, wheezing, breathing through the mouth, fast breathing, frequent respiratory infections, rapid breathing, or shortness of breath at night Also common: acute episodes, chest tightness, anxiety, early awakening, fast heart rate, or throat irritation Asthma mist is a natural homeopathic spray fortified with ingredients long used by homeopathic scientists to alleviate symptoms associated with asthma. What is exactly Asthma? Asthma is an inflammatory disorder of the airways, which causes attacks of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing.Causes, incidence, and risk factors Asthma is caused by inflammation in the airways. When an asthma attack occurs, the muscles surrounding the airways become tight and the lining of the air passages swells. This reduces the amount of air that can pass by. In sensitive people, asthma symptoms can be triggered by breathing in allergy-causing substances (called allergens or triggers). Common asthma triggers include: 1| Animals (pet hair or dander) 2| Dust 3| Changes in weather (most often cold weather) 4| Chemicals in the air or in food 5| Exercise 6| Mold 7| Pollen 8| Respiratory infections, such as the common cold 9| Strong emotions (stress) 10| Tobacco smoke Symptoms Most people with asthma have attacks separated by symptom-free periods. Some people have long-term shortness of breath with episodes of increased shortness of breath. Either wheezing or a cough may be the main symptom.Asthma attacks can last for minutes to days, and can become dangerous if the airflow is severely restricted. Symptoms include: 1| Cough with or without sputum (phlegm) production. 2| Pulling in of the skin between the ribs when breathing (intercostal retractions). 3|Shortness of breath that gets worse with exercise or activity 4|Wheezing, which: Emergency symptoms: Bluish color to the lips and face Decreased level of alertness, such as severe drowsiness or confusion, during an asthma attack Extreme difficulty breathing Rapid pulse Severe anxiety due to shortness of breath Sweating Other symptoms that may occur with this disease: 1| Abnormal breathing pattern --breathing out takes more than twice as long as breathing in. 2| Breathing temporarily stops. 3| Chest pain. 4| Nasal flaring. 5| Tightness in the chest. Go to the emergency room if: 1| You develop drowsiness or confusion. 2| You have severe shortness of breath at rest. 3| Your peak flow measurement is less than 50% of your personal best. 4| You have severe chest pain. Prevention 1| You can reduce asthma symptoms by avoiding known triggers and substances that irritate the airways. 2| Cover bedding with "allergy-proof" casings to reduce exposure to dust mites. 3| Remove carpets from bedrooms and vacuum regularly. 4| Use only unscented detergents and cleaning materials in the home. 5| Keep humidity levels low and fix leaks to reduce the growth of organisms such as mold. 6| Keep the house clean and keep food in containers and out of bedrooms -- this helps reduce the possibility of cockroaches, which can trigger asthma attacks in some people. 7| If a person is allergic to an animal that cannot be removed from the home, the animal should be kept out of the bedroom. Place filtering material over the heating outlets to trap animal dander. 8| Eliminate tobacco smoke from the home. This is the single most important thing a family can do to help a child with asthma. Smoking outside the house is not enough. Family members and visitors who smoke outside carry smoke residue inside on their clothes and hair -- this can trigger asthma symptoms. 9| Persons with asthma should also avoid air pollution, industrial dusts, and other irritating fumes as much as possible. Is your heartburn taking your breath away? Doctors find that people with asthma are twice as likely to also suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. “We never realized his before. But gastroesophageal reflux disease, which is basically heart burn acid from the stomach coming up the food pipe, spilling up the throat sometimes spilling into the lungs, can cause a tremendous amount of aggravation and asthma-like symptoms,” says Lee Memorial Health System pulmonologist, Dr. Sagar Naik. Experts aren’t exactly sure how the two are connected, or which one comes first. But it is often a factor in diagnosing adult onset asthma. “We have seen folks who don't have asthma at all and suddenly the reflux becomes such a problem that they start having asthma symptoms,” says Dr. Naik. Getting a grasp on GERD can help people handle their asthma. It begins with diet. Not just what you eat, but changing your eating habits may provide relief. “Avoiding acidic foods: coffee, orange juice. Taking simple pills to reduce gastro acidity. Not laying down flat after having a heavy meal, instead staying up right for three to four hours before lying down, can go a long way” Treating acid reflux is helping many patients breath a little easier View More Health Matters video segments at leememorial.org/healthmatters/ Lee Memorial Health System in Fort Myers, FL is the largest network of medical care facilities in Southwest Florida and is highly respected for its expertise, innovation and quality of care. Dr. Robert Bastian of Bastian Voice Institute explains laryngospasm with video of the larynx and a simulated attack. Laryngospasm is a sudden, often severe attack of difficulty breathing, typically lasting between 30 and 90 seconds. Usually the individual makes a frightening noise while trying to breathe in during the episode, which they often call a "choking attack. You will hear the types of noises often made by the person experiencing laryngospasm, and see what the vocal cords are doing at the same time. In this video, Dr. Robert Bastian of Bastian Voice Institute explains cricopharyngeal spasm, a problem that causes a troubling sensation of throat constriction or of a foreign body in the throat. Cricopharyngeal spasm is caused by over-contraction of the upper esophageal sphincter, or cricopharyngeus muscle, and causes an annoying, preoccupying, even anxiety-provoking sensation of something stuck in the throat, like a "wad of phlegm." A common description is "There is something in my throat that I can't swallow or spit out." Individuals with this problem often have difficulty getting a clear diagnosis, and may see several physicians and undergo unnecessary and unhelpful tests in their quest for an answer. Sometimes also called "globus sensation," this disorder is described and explained in detail. http://www.drlam.com/blog/signs-symptoms-adrenal-fatigue-breathlessness-causes/18836/ This is Dr. Lam, founder of DrLam.com, and today we are going to talk to about some rather severe and important symptoms, which are shortness of breath. Now people with adrenal fatigue can sometimes present with shortness of breath despite a normal work up. In other words, they feel that they are not catching a full breath of air, especially on exertion and when under stress as well. After extensive work up for the lungs and the heart, they are given a clean bill of health. What is really going on? As far as conventional medicine is concerned there is no clear explanation, and sufferers are universally sent home with no solution. Sometimes they are put on some form of an inhaler to help the breathing mechanism, but generally speaking, this doesn't really help it as well. Now, we don't have the exact physiological basis to know why, but what we do see is this shortness of breath usually happens in two situations; in the setting of adrenal fatigue, one is when the person is extremely nervous with anxiety and this can have some trouble of shortness of breath associated, but this usually is more associated with panic attack-like symptoms where the person is breathing rapidly, and the intake is shallow, resulting in the build up of carbon dioxide. Therefore, this shortness of breath is a vicious cycle that propagates itself. There is another possibility; it's that those people with advanced adrenal fatigue who are in a catabolic state, these people tend to lose muscle mass; now usually by the time that this comes upon, the person is rather skinny. They not only lose muscle mass in their big muscles such as their biceps or the triceps, but the intercostal muscles, the muscles that hold ribs together are also decompensating. So, when a person wants to take a deep breath, it does not happen because when you have wasting of the intercostal muscles the muscle strength becomes compromised. When this happens the ribcage can not be expanded as it normally can. So, there are physical and structural limitations to this breathing when this happens. So this is usually presented as I said earlier in a person who is already somewhat catabolic, losing weight, severe fatigue, not necessarily doing a lot of exercises, mostly housebound, and in the advanced stages of adrenal fatigue. Normally when this happens there are also signs of GI disturbances, gastric slow down, palpitations in the heart, neurotransmitter imbalances, so we are getting with a clinical picture that is rather serious in terms of presenting itself in an abnormal fashion. The shortness of breath is just one of those things that goes along; by itself it is not indicative of anything because the person still can breathe, its just that when under stress they feel that they are very tight. They try to take a deep breath and there are some limitions, but by and large normal breathing mechanisms in terms of oxygen saturation are still intact, but the complaint is there. So if a person has this complaint of shortness of breath, and you look at the person and there is an adrenal fatigue setting, you have to really think about whether it is an issue of catabolism undergoing as well as whether it is an issue of other triggering factors. Together, put the whole clinical picture together, and when you put the clinical picture together, you will be able to see that it is really a bigger problem going on underneath. Now, the good news is that usually as the adrenals recover and the muscle rebuilding and the catabolic process is reversed then this will improve. Nevertheless, it is an important symptom to recognize because an unresolved catabolism can lead to shortness of breath which can then lead to many other structural problems because if the lung cannot expand then it is more prone to getting infections, etc. So, you don't want to leave this unturned, uninvestigated. So finally, ive found whats been making my throat sore for 15 years. I always thought it was a condition called muscle tension dysphonia, but i went to ENT and they put a camera down my throat. They confirmed it was not MTD, and gave me omeprazole for acid reflux. Well after 2 weeks of taking it my throat has been fine, and it feels amazing. If you have throat tightness, then seriously try omeprazole. It may be acid reflux.

People with asthma have sensitive airways in their lungs which react to triggers, causing a ‘flare-up’. In a flare-up, the muscles around the airways squeeze tight, the airways swell and become narrow and there is more mucus. These changes make it harder to breathe.

Here is a quick review of breath sounds heard on auscultation. The normal breath sounds are Vesicular breath sounds heard on most of the lung. It is soft and of low pitch. Inspiratory phase in longer than expiration without any pause between these two phases. Abnormalities can be presence of bronchial breath sounds, diminished or absent breath sounds, or presence of added/Adventitious breath sounds. Bronchial breathing is hollow, tubular in quality, high pitched. There is definite gap between inspiration & expiration. Added or Adventitious sounds include Wheeze, Crepitations, Pleural friction rub & Stridor. Wheeze can be Low pitched also known as Rhonchi or High pitched which is the usual wheeze. Low pitched wheeze/Rhonchi is caused by secretions in smaller airways causing narrowing while High pitched wheeze is because of Bronchospasm. Stridor is not included in this video as it is not classically a breath sound auscultated but is audible without stethoscope and is caused by narrowing/obstruction of larger airways. A good stethoscope like Litmann stethoscope is a must to pick sounds easily during auscultation. It is encouraged to listen to breath sounds (included in video) with headphones. http://jenspringer.com My Mold Symptoms: Estrogen, Anxiety, Insomnia, Rashes, Asthma & More. We haven't done videos about health in a long time because the last 1.5 years it's like someone through us off the cliff and dragged us through the mud. We didn't want to do any blogs or videos until we were though it and knew what worked. For much of the time we didn't even know what was causing the issues and problems for us. The issues started a few years before shit hit the fan. The first signs were subtle anxiety and sleeping issues because of hormones. About Summer of 2014 we got crazy sick. Panic and anxiety were off the charts. Throat was tight, feelings of choking. Sleeping, panic attacks, and out of breath. Couldn't figure out what was wrong. We found we were in a house infested with MOLD. Jen thought she was having reactions to food, she had no idea it was the house. The mold was growing behind the walls. Monty developed massive rashes, asthma, and oozing rashes. Even his pants were sticking to his legs! Once we figured all of that out things started to get better. The underlying issues were hormone, thyroid, and adrenal stress. This lead to a disaster when the mold exposure happened. Estrogen dominance can lead to a roller coaster ride. Even massive weight gain. Visit oure website - http://chiropractorfortworth.org - Chest Infection Symptoms. Chest infection is quite common among both adults as well as small children. It is of two different types. One is related to upper respiratory tract infection where the nose, sinus cavities, larynx and pharynx are involved. In the other one, the lower respiratory tract is attacked and the lungs get affected. This is a more serious condition and is found in people suffering from pneumonia. Causes. Chest infection is caused either by the different viruses that are responsible for cold and flu or some bacteria. Its symptoms are usually observed within 2-3 days after you catch the infection and may continue to bother you for the next few weeks. Symptoms in Adults. The symptoms of upper and lower respiratory tract infection have lots of similarity but their intensity becomes much severe when the lungs get infected. Here are the commonly observed symptoms of chest infection: Chest Congestion: A dull, heavy feeling inside the chest is one of the obvious signs of infection in the chest. This is because of phlegm in chest. When there is a heavy congestion, it gives pain and discomfort. Persistent cough often aggravates this pain further. Cough: An inflammation in the air passage that lies in between the nose and the lungs causes a lot of irritation inside the throat which gives rise to a chesty cough. Initially, it is a dry cough but as mucous gets accumulated, thick mucus is expelled which is yellow or green in color. Repeated cough contracts the thoracic cavity so badly that traces of blood may come out with the phlegm. The cough bothers the patient for at least 7-10 days, if not weeks. Breathing Difficulty: As the nose and rest of the respiratory tract gets blocked with thick mucus, breathing problem arises. As a result, one starts taking shallow and rapid breaths. It also produces wheezing sound during inhalation. Fever: The body temperature often rises because of the infection. If it is an upper respiratory infection, then usually one gets a mild fever. However, the fever due to pneumonia, could go beyond 101 degrees F. Pain: Chest infection makes your body weak and it is susceptible to pain. One may experience headache quite frequently. The joints, bones, muscles and nerves of the body becomes tender and pain is experienced in various parts of the body. In this condition, back and neck pain mostly arise due to achy muscles. Symptoms in Babies. The symptoms in children and babies are more or less the same as adults. You must observe them carefully as the symptoms may have severe impact on their health. They often have swallowing difficulty in this condition. So, they should be fed with great care to avoid choking. There are some symptoms in babies that require emergency medical intervention, for example, shortness of breath, which is accompanied by a bluish tinge in lips, tongue, and face and abnormal drowsiness. Treatment. When the symptoms are mild, they may not require any medical treatment, they may subside on their own. Moderate to serious infections are diagnosed with the help of laboratory test like X-rays and mucus sample test. Bacterial chest infection is treated with the help of antibiotic medicines. However, if it is caused by virus, then antibiotics are ineffective on them. In that case, the symptoms are controlled with the help of suitable medicines. For pain and fever, pain relieving medicines are prescribed by the doctors. Expectorants and cough suppressants can be used to check a bad cough. When you are suffering from chest infection, you must take adequate amount of rest which will help the body to recover from it. You should also keep your body hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Inhalation of steam facilitates thinning up of the mucus and ensures its faster elimination. The symptoms tend to get worse with exposure to irritants such as dust, smoke, chemicals, etc. Therefore, you should stay away from them. You should cover up your face while sneezing and coughing to avoid spread of infection. Read more at buzzle.com/articles/chest-infection-symptoms.html

You mentioned that you've experienced some chest tightness and dizziness, and you're wondering if these symptoms are associated with panic attacks or something more serious. These symptoms can go along with panic attacks, as well as a racing heartbeat, difficulty breathing, tingling in your fingers, trembling, shaking - there's many symptoms that can go along with it. But it is debilitating, it's paralyzing fear, and most of the time, it's irrational fear, which is why people who have it struggle with it, because they want to rationally talk themselves through it, and tell themselves that it's okay. But these can last for 10 to 20 minutes or up to an hour. If you feel like this describes what you're experiencing, talk with your primary care physician. And after asking your more specific questions, they can decide if treatment is necessary for you. If it goes untreated, then it can lead to more serious conditions like depression. Now the other half of this is that dizziness and chest tightness can be associated with more serious medical conditions, like heart problems. And these types of things warrant urgent medical care. So if you feel like you're having a heart attack, you have difficulty breathing, chest tightness, if you have pain down your left arm, if your jaw is hurting, it would be best to seek medical attention as soon as possible so a doctor can evaluate you while you're having the symptoms, and decide what it is. Good luck with everything, and if you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.

This is a question of a 40 year old asthmatic individual. We have always seen that people who have respiratory problems, especially asthma at such a middle age, they can have coexisting morbidities or coexisting diseases which can give rise to such symptoms and the symptoms which are mentioned are hinting at hyperacidity because there is a stomach pain, there is bitter taste in the mouth and we are not very sure about the muscles stiffness, which is a different system and which cannot probably involve the skeletal system, in an asthmatic individual. But in asthmatic individual, we can see exacerbation of disease, we have seen several patients coming with hyperacidity which can cause dyspepsia and other symptoms, the only exception is the muscle stiffness and we need more details, whether it is the respiratory muscles or the other skeletal muscles involving the limbs which can be investigated to find out if there are any other diseases coexisting.

Asthma can be a life threatening condition if it is not treated. Asthma is the narrowing and inflammation of the throat and airways. Asthma will make it hard for the person to breathe and make their chest feel tight. Much like if you had an elephant sitting on your chest. It will cause you to wheeze and your chest to rattle ( more on this later), and make you cough. When your airways narrow less air can travel to your lungs so you will have a hard time breathing. It can feel as if you are breathing from a straw. Sometimes the symptoms will go away on their own or with medical help. When you have very bad symptoms this is called a "asthma attack" and this can be fatal. There is no cure for asthma however it can be controlled with medication. When something causes you to have asthma problems, it is called a "trigger" and the act of it is called a "flare-up". The most commonly used medication for people who suffer from asthma is an asthma inhaler. It is known to start in early childhood and for many people they will grow out of it when they become older.Although this wasn't the case for myself however, many people do grow out of it. The airways of people with asthma are very sensitive and the slightest thing can trigger an asthma attack. Things such as pet hair(dander),pollen, or dust. They have connected asthma with cat allergies one such article can be read here , I too have cat allergies. In fact, cat my cat allergy is my worst allergy. Chest congestion is a very common condition that most people have at some point during their lifetime. It is characterized by a buildup of mucus in the trachea and the respiratory tract that leaves your chest feeling heavy. If not treated timely, it can cause an infection in your respiratory tract. The most common cause of chest congestion is the common cold. Allergens, bacteria and fungi can also cause chest congestion and infection. Some other causes include asthma, bronchitis, the flu, pneumonia and tuberculosis. Common symptoms include a tightened chest, irritation in the throat, mild chest pain, cough, shortness of breath, dizziness and difficulty breathing. Here are a few natural home remedies to get rid of chest congestion. 1. Salt Water Gargling with salt water several times a day is an effective treatment for chest congestion. While the salt helps remove mucus from the respiratory tract, the hot water reduces irritation in the throat. Add 1 teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water. Mix well until the salt is dissolved thoroughly. Gargle with it 2 or 3 times daily until your congestion clears. 2. Steam Inhaling steam is another very effective way to get quick relief from chest congestion as the steamís heat and moisture help break up and dissolve mucus. Fill a bowl with very hot water. Add a few drops of eucalyptus or peppermint essential oil. Place your face over the bowl and a towel over your head. Inhale the steam for as long as you can and breathe deeply. You can also take a hot shower and breathe in the steam vapors for 5 minutes. 3. Apple Cider Vinegar Apple cider vinegar is another effective remedy against chest congestion. It helps thin the mucus in the chest, thus relieving congestion and helping you breathe better. Add 2 teaspoons of organic raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar to a cup of warm water. Mix in 1 teaspoon of raw honey. 4. Turmeric Turmeric has an active compound called curcumin that helps expectorate the mucus and give you quick relief from chest congestion. Mix a pinch of turmeric powder in a glass of warm water. Gargle with it a few times daily. 5. Ginger Ginger can also help with chest congestion due to its anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. The polyphenols present in ginger help inhibit the secretion of mucus. Add 1 tablespoon of freshly chopped raw ginger pieces to a cup of hot water. Cover and allow it to steep for 5 minutes. Strain, then add a little honey. Drink up to 3 cups of this warm tea daily. You can also chew small ginger pieces throughout the day to get rid of congestion. 6. Garlic Garlic is another very effective home remedy for reducing chest congestion. Its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties help fight respiratory infections that cause congestion. Boil 2 to 3 crushed garlic cloves and ½ teaspoon of honey in 1 cup of water or milk. Strain and drink it 2 times daily until the congestion clears. Eating fresh garlic cloves can also help relieve congestion. Here's a short video showing you a toddler (aka, my sweet Wilson) who's having difficulty breathing. As you'll see, his abdomen is sucking in and out, which is called retracted breathing...meaning he needs help STAT! If your kid is breathing like this, run don't walk to the hospital or doctor for a breathing treatment. I wanted to show this because the doctor always asked me if my kids were having retractions, and I never knew what she meant. It's obvious when it happens. So this helps some parents out there! Btw, Wilson is all better now! :) Thanks for watching! xo, Janz

Watch more How to Give First Aid videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/504440-How-to-Help-Someone-Who-Cant-Breathe-First-Aid-Training What do you do when someone has trouble breathing? Call 911. Get on the phone with them and they can talk you through everything that's going on. They know what they're talking about, they do this everyday, and they can help you out. You want to clear anything that's in the airway, any kind of obstruction, get that out of the way if you can. Loosen any tight clothing, anything that's restrictive or kind of closing them in. The next thing you want to do is, if someone is asthmatic or has any kind of medication at home, grab that if it's nearby and give that to the person to use. That can help immensely. Keep checking for airway problems, breathing problems, pulse problems, while you're waiting for 911 to come, for the ambulance to come. If there's any open wounds, especially in the neck or in the chest, you want to cover those up. You want to keep calm so that they can see in you how to act and they'll reflect that calmness. The more stressed out you are, the harder it is going to be to control this troubled breathing. Do not give them food. Do not give them water. Do not give anything that can obstruct the airway even more. Sometimes when people have trouble breathing, they'll tell you that it feels like they're breathing through a straw, that they can't get enough air in. They may wheeze, they may have gurgles. They're going to panic. They're going to feel anxiety. They're going to get freaked out. It's a normal response. Don't do anything like you see in movies. You don't need to put a bag over their head. You don't need them to lean over or maintain a weird position to try to get breathing. You just need to calm them. You need to get them someplace where it's safe, where they can sit, or lie back, and just try to breathe slowly, slowly out, and slowly in, longer out than in. It's going to feel longer to them each breath because anytime you have trouble breathing, your anxiety heightens and heightens and heightens and you want to try to quell that down, otherwise it just spirals.

Poor Casper. After rescuing this big boy from the outdoors (his previous owner's abandoned him), we found him doing this strange cough. It didn't look like a hairball cough and happened often enough that it concerned us. So we took this video to show our vet. And sure enough, this is the telltale sign of kitty asthma. They also took X-rays to verify. This is what a feline asthma attack looks and sounds like. During an asthma attack, a cat will put his head down near the ground and stretch his neck out (like a seal). This is not a hairball cough. Feline asthma affects approximately 1% of the american domestic feline population. Casper is now taking a steroid, Prednisolone, daily which has helped to decrease the frequency of his attacks. If you see your cat doing this, take him to the vet for a check-up.
