Sandra is 60 years young and has suffered severe pain, swelling and repeat surgeries on a damaged knee since she was hit by a motorcycle aged 13. When Sandra walked, you could see the pain on her face, she had a pronounced limp, causing her to lean forwards. She frequently collapsed when her affected knee gave way. She was diagnosed with arthritis, which added to her mobility problems. Simply walking on level ground has been a challenge and as we all know our age only makes our problems much worse, or does it? This is what I wrote after seeing Sandra run instead of limping: Just saw Lucy's mum after 10 days of Inclined Bed Therapy running a short distance. Lucy commented that her mum can't run and indeed 10 days ago she was struggling to walk upright, stooped position, painful hip, swollen knee and limps with the pain. Her posture is normally bent forward. She frequently collapsed when her legs gave way. She also has osteoporosis and arthritis. Her problems developed after being hit by a motorcycle age 13 and for all of these years she has been in pain, which she added was worsening with age. She has had surgery on her knee to remove cartilage but this did not stop the pain or swelling. After 10 days of IBT: Her swollen knee is normal now and she has no pain for the first time since the accident. Her hip is no longer painful. and she is comfortable standing upright. She still limps but added it's just a habit that's going to take a while to get out of. On rising from her flat bed, she was aching and it took an hour to get herself mobile. Now she wakes up and is good to go. She is writing everything down that changes. Her posture is now upright, although I did notice her going into the stooped position but she automatically stood upright again. Absolutely amazing to see these phenomenal changes at first hand. Further improvements: Inclined Bed Therapy has restored a prolapsed bladder in a lady age 60. 7 June 2013 was the last time I met with Lucy's mum, who is 60, and a relatively new IBT'r, she was in a lot of discomfort. For several years she has been troubled with regular urine infections, bloating abdomen and severe discomfort. During our conversation, I learned that she had a prolapsed bladder, which was bulging out. Her G.P. Confirmed this and she was advised that she needed surgery to correct the problem. She had been making terrific progress with her major problems and if you remember, I wrote about seeing her running, something she could not have imagined ever doing again. Today 4 July 2013, we met again. She couldn't hold back how her prolapse had gone back all by itself without doing any exercise. Now she says it's as if it never happened and I feel marvellous, no more abdominal discomfort, no more bloating and no more urine infections. She said she can't wait to go back to report this to her GP and tell him all about IBT and what it has done for her. Her bladder now empties completely, whereas before she would retain urine, which led to her infections, a common occurrence with a prolapsed bladder. I must admit, that when I learned about her prolapse, I though now here's a condition that IBT can't help with. Obvious I thought, gravity is responsible for pulling the bladder down, which admittedly now sounds a contradiction in itself. After all almost all of the prolapses that occur do so while using a flat bed. Watching her walk today across a busy road and back, no one could ever imagine how much her gait and posture has changed. She walks normally and quickly instead of a severe limp which she has suffered with since being hit by a motorcycle when very young. Her shoulders are almost level and she admits she needs to forget how to limp now. On bending down, she noticed that her once painful knee causes her no pain, something she could not have envisaged happening. Sandra would not entertain kneeling before she tilted her bed, now she can. She confirms that her strength and energy has increased and is increasing more as the weeks go by and people around her are noticing, especially the absence of pain on her face.

So I recently injured my knee after having to drop the bike in a traffic incident. In this video I discuss what it has been like for me getting back on the bike after having hurt myself in this and another couple of incidents like it. I also talk about how my riding style is somewhat reserved and cautious on the first ride out after the accident and how I think that sometimes as motorcycle riders we can become just a little too confident, and it takes an incident like this to bring us back down to earth and keeping a more trained eye on the situations that could cause us to be seriously injured. First, make sure to do a proper warm up before you ride. A lot of people just jump on the bike and start riding, but you should take a few minutes to warm up your legs to limber up the joints, tendons and ligaments. I personally do some deep knee bends, bodyweight squats, and light stretching before I go out for a ride. It only takes a few minutes, but it can make a big difference in your comfort level especially if you are experiencing knee pain while riding. Second, during the first 5-10 minutes of riding take it easy and just focus on spinning your legs in an easy gear. Don't start riding hard right at the start, give your body a chance to go through the motions and circulate blood flow to your legs before increasing the intensity of your ride. Third, if you are new to riding or coming back to riding after a long layoff. Don't jump into a big 20 mile bike ride right from the start. Take your time and ease yourself back into riding again. For your first few rides just go a couple miles and build up the distance and intensity gradually day by day. In the spring time when I'm getting back into riding again after a winter layoff I'll do some spin classes at the local gym. This helps to condition my legs and build up my work capacity for riding again without causing joint pain. Forth, make sure your seat is set at the right height. Ideally it should be as high as possible while still maintaining a slight bend in your leg when the peddle is in the bottom position. But even if you are in this range, you can experiment with setting your seat about 1/2 inch higher or 1/2 inch lower. Sometimes a slight difference can make your rides more comfortable and help reduce strain on the knees. These tips will apply regardless if you are a road cyclist or ride a mountain bike because the same principles apply in both cases. I hope these tips help to reduce your knee pain. Zumba Fitness: Most people wouldn’t think twice about doing Zumba if they’re suffering from arthritis. But exercise physiologist Caryn Locke tells Health.com that Zumba not only burns calories but does it without jarring your joints. She adds that Zumba is mostly about movement and fluidity. 5. Qi Gong: Sometimes the best exercise is the one that is outside of your comfort zone. Tess Franklin, an exercise physiologist, teaches Chinese exercises. Franklin said to Health.com that this exercise is more about strengthening your core muscles in the abdomen area by trying to maintain posture and balance. 4. Elliptical Machine: This exercise can do wonders for people with arthritis. Many people who have arthritis in their knees use this machine at the gym and slowly work their way up. Pilates: Tresa Sauer, a personal trainer at the YWCA of Minneapolis, was kindly able to explain to Health.com that doing Pilates is a great way to stabilize and strengthen your joints. She suggests that people suffering from arthritis should do the shoulder bridge exercise. 1. Walking: Exercise Physiologist William R. Sukala explained in an interview with Weight Watchers that losing weight goes hand-in-hand with reducing the pain and regaining the flexibility of your joints that are suffering from arthritis. In 1972, at the age of 7, Steven was abducted by child-molester Kenneth Parnell and was forced to stay with him for over 7 years. He eventually managed to escape in 1980 with Timmy White, a 5 year old boy who Parnell had kidnapped recently, and together they went to the police. Parnell was arrested and both children were reunited with their families. Steven had trouble readjusting with his real family and was often teased by other kids at school for being molested. He eventually dropped out, drank heavily, and got kicked out of his home. He later got married, had kids, and worked with child abduction groups. But the tragic part of Steven's story was not over. On the afternoon of September 17 6: Don Rich Donald Eugene Ulrich, otherwise known by his stage name Don Rich, was a famous American country musician. He was noted as a skilled guitarist and fiddler from an early age, and at 16 he opened for Elvis Presley at the Tacoma Lincoln Bowl in 1957. After a year of college, Rich dropped out and joined Buck Owens in his tours and records, eventually forming "The Buckaroos"; the band responsible for creating the signature "Bakersfield sound" of the early 60s country music scene. Owens and Rich experimented a lot with their music 5: Luc Bourdon Joseph Luc Bourdon was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played for the NHL's Vancouver Canucks and their AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose. During his childhood, he was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis and became wheelchair bound. His legendary fight against Jose Luis Castillo on May 7, 2005, for which he and his rival received "Fight of the Year" honors by The Ring and the Boxing Writers Association of America 3: Berry Mannakee The British royal family has always made headlines, sometimes for bad reasons. The past few generations of the House of Windsor have had their fair share of scandals - from affairs to divorces, and even a king renouncing his throne. Lachamn’s test- ACL knee exam •Knee is flexed at 30 degrees. •ACL tear of the knee is identified by pulling on the tibia and examining the frontward motion of the lower leg in comparison to the upper leg. Radiological exam – ACL •MRI of the knee joint shows bone lesions or bruising associated with tears of the ACL. Injury is found in the typical location; middle of the femoral condyle and posterior part of the tibia laterally. Posterior cruciate ligament tear (PCL) •Common cause of injury is a bent knee hitting a dashboard in a car accident. Tibial Sag Test –PCL knee exam Quadriceps active test-PCL knee exam •The examiner stabilizes the leg of the patient and then the patient is asked to actively contract the quadriceps muscle. •The tibia is seen actively reduced from the posterior subluxed position. Lachman’s test-PCL knee exam •Knee is bent 20-30 degrees. •The posterior drawer test is carried out while the patient is in a supine position and the knee is flexed to 90 degrees. •The amount of translation of the tibia relative to the femur is observed. The dial test is performed while the patient is in the supine or prone position and both knees are in 90 and 30 degrees of flexion. More than 10 degrees of external rotation indicates significant injury. Common meniscal tears Symptoms include •Knee pain •Pain with straightening the knee •Swelling •Locking •Weakness

Here is how to modify your bicycle if you have back and neck pain, but still want to ride a bike. I like to ride my bike around town to stay in shape, but a traditional racing bike really hurts to ride because I have back pain and neck pain and wrist pain. To make your bike more comfortable to ride when you have a sore back or a sore neck, these modifications will help you. Anything you can do to raise the handlebars up, so that you were sitting straight up and down rather than putting a lot of weight on your wrists shoulders and back really helps. Installing taller handlebars, or handlebar risers really helps a lot. A mountain bike suspension fork also helps quite a bit to reduce the shock from the road on your body. Changing out knobby tires for smooth tires also makes the ride a lot smoother, and makes it easier to do a lot of miles on your bike. Also make sure you have a comfortable seat to sit on. I hope these bike mods help you be more comfortable on your bike if you have chronic pain issues. Learning how to raise your handlebars will help you be more comfortable on a bike. If you don't want to install longer cables, the bar end handles are an easy way to raise your handlebars.

Fix tightness and build an athletically functional body here http://athleanx.com/x/build-the-body-of-an-athlete Many lifters, runners and bikers will get pain on the outside of their knee or thigh and think that they have IT Band Syndrome because they’ve been told that they do. Unfortunately, the IT Band is just caught in the middle of some pretty significant problems in one of likely four other muscles. In this video, I show you how four muscles in the hip actually contribute to the pain and tension felt in the Iliotibial band and what you need to do to fix them. Here’s a hint, you do not want to foam roll out the IT Band unless you want more pain and discomfort. The IT Band is a thick fibrous tendon that runs along the lateral aspect of the thigh and connects from the hip to the tibia on the outside of your knee. This tendon has the ability to withstand changes in tension to it by having up to 1000 pounds of resistive capacity. If you think that you are going to be able to foam roll out the tightness that may be present in this structure you are sadly mistaken. That said, you can definitely influence the tension present in this band by addressing the muscles that insert into the IT Band. The gluteus maximus, lateral hamstrings and quads and tensor fascia lata are all muscles that feed into the iliotibial band. When any of these muscles are tight they pull on the band and cause it to be not just tight but also out of balance with the rest of the tension that is contributing or feeding into it. This can cause a pulling on the femur and make it hard to properly execute a squat or ride a bike without feeling pain in the outside of your thigh or knee. Instead of foam rolling the IT Band, you want to compress and floss the offending muscles feeding the tension. Here I show you two of these mobility drills that you can do to decrease the tension in a hypertonic muscle such as the TFL or the lateral quads. You want to use a resilient structure like a lacrosse ball or the fat gripz that I’m using here, since they have a much lower profile than the foam roller. This allows you to keep your leg in contact with the ground and move it into hip flexion as if you were while doing a squat. If you do not feel any discomfort at all in these movements when you place the muscle in contact with the grips, then you likely do not need any work on this muscle. This is one of the biggest places people waste time in the gym these days. They see every mobility drill in the books and want to add it to their routines, not realizing that the wrong mobility drills when performed can actually do more to put you out of balance than bring you into it! Mobility work is only effective if you are mobilizing structures that need it in the first place. Same goes for training and workout programs. Doing what you think looks cool or because someone else told you it was, is not the prescription for an effective workout plan. Doing what needs to be done and only what needs to be done while ignoring the rest of the broscience out there is a great way to get results and get them faster. The coccyx is commonly referred to as the tailbone. It is the final segment of the vertebral column comprising of two to four separate or fused vertebrae (the coccygeal vertebrae below the sacrum) below the sacrum. The coccyx is a very small bone which most doctors are not very familiar with. The occyx provides an important attachment for tendons, ligaments and muscles. Lumbosacral spine x-rays and MRI will not show the coccyx. If you want to vies the coccyx, order coccyx views or MRI. Dynamic views of the coccyx while the patient is sitting leaning backwards is needed for imaging of the coccyx. These x-rays should then be compared to non-weight bearing films with patient standing or lying to the side. Excessive movement of the coccyx is abnormal. When sitting, the coccyx shifts forward and acts as a shock absorber. The coccyx bears more weight when the person is sitting and leaning backwards compared to when leaning forward. Coccyx pain symptoms (coccydynia) •Pain during sitting or when getting up from sitting. •Pain originating in the middle just above the anus. •Pain improves while leaning forward or to the side. •Local tenderness over the area. The most frequent causes of coccyx pain: •Falling on the buttocks or backwards. •Fracture/dislocation due to trauma or injury •Malignancy •Infection •Pregnancy/labor •Idiopathic Falling on the tailbone can lead to coccygeal pain, known as coccydynia, resulting in chronic inflammation of the sacrococcygeal joint. Dislocation of the coccyx occurs when there is a separation of the coccyx from the sacrum. Types of coccyx injuries •Anterior dislocation •Posterior dislocation •Anterior angulation •Hooked coccyx In addition to hooking and dislocation casuing pain, there may be a side bend deformity causing the coccyx to be angled sharply. And even though my total experience with snow comes to 45 seconds, all these principles apply to riding in snow too. First... bike setup. If you are riding a lot of soft sand, consider reducing air pressure for tyres to 8psi or even less. So riding in soft sand. The big problem is it's counter intuitive when riding in soft sand. You reach a critical speed and suddenly you are riding on top of the sand. Body position is critical. Move your body weight back even further the softer the sand gets. Another counter intuitive part of sand riding is learning to relax, let the bike move around and don't have a death grip on the handlebars. Around 95% of the top extreme enduro riders are former trials riders. So it's not surprising these guys say the key to learning to ride fast is first slow down and get your fundamental techniques right even riding in snow or riding in soft sand. The past few years Graham Jarvis has been the king of the extreme enduro world, and we've even started our own religion based on his teachings. We even got to ask his holiness on how to make our bikes do the crazy shit his bike does. Cornering can be very tricky in sand. For more info, see our training vid for cornering in soft sand. Braking is very different too. When learning, it's best not to use the brakes at all as there is so much drag in soft sand. Essentially it's all the same technique and I rode the DR650 in very soft sand without problems. Usually dropping a bike in soft sand won't scratch or damage it. Snow riding? On top of our 45 seconds experience, we've been told all these principles apply riding in soft sand, but you also need to watch out for obstacles hidden by the snow. It can be inspiring, but also demoralising to see how well the top riders go. We figured if you can't beat them, join them. So past few years, a bunch of us in our 50s thought we would try to learn as much of this shit as possible, before dementia and arthritis slow us down. And along the way we've been pumping out free dodgy enduro training vids for everyone. And being free they come with a money back guarantee if they make you ride worse... and they probably will. Riding an adventure bike that weighs north of 200kg through soft sand requires not only the correct technique but an understanding of what you’re trying to achieve with that technique. So what is cross training? It's just applying trials skills to dirt riding... slowing things down initially we we can be faster, and more importantly, better dirt riders in soft sand riding. Arguably the top extreme enduro rider back in 2010 despite coming from New Zealand, Birchy shared many tips that worked their way into the training vids. So get into cross training. Has your pumpkin broken down again? This pictorial guide for illiterate riders will get it running again... for a little while. Available at all dodgy motorbike shops. The ultimate goal in the sand is to maintain momentum. Everything covered after this has the aim of helping you keep the bike light on the sand and stop it sinking in and coming to a standstill or, worse, falling over riding in soft sand. Building and maintaining forward momentum will keep the bike up on top of the sand, much like getting a boat up on a plane. In a perfect world, you go from a firm surface into the sand and you can carry some momentum in. But at some point you will most likely stop in the sand and have to get moving again — this can be tricky when riding in soft sand.

Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is a very painful condition on the outside of the elbow from an overuse injury. It can be caused from several sports or even overuse on your computer or iPad. These stretches and exercises should help. See Doctor Jo’s blog post about this at: http://www.askdoctorjo.com/tennis-elbow The first set of exercises will loosen up the muscles, try not to push through pain, just get a slight stretch. You can prop your arm on a table and let your wrist hand off or you can hold it up in the air. Make a fist with your hand with your palm down. At your wrist, bend your wrist up to work the muscles in extension, and then bend it down to stretch the muscles in flexion. Then turn your fist to the side with the thumb toward the ceiling for a radial and ulnar deviation movement going up and down. Finally, with your palm open and your elbow by your side, turn your forearm up with the palm up in supination, and then turn it down into pronation. Do all of these about ten times. Now for some exercises, you can use a soup can or resistive bands if you have some, but start off with something light. Go back to your flexion and extension movement, and go slow and controlled with this. Do about ten of these. Now grab a hammer or something that is top heavy to give you an extra stretch with overpressure. You will do your supination and pronation now with the hammer. Do ten of these. For stretching, put your arm straight out in front of you. With your palm down, bend your wrist down with overpressure from your other hand. If this is not enough of a stretch, curl your fingers into a fist and do the same stretch. Hold these for 30 seconds, and do three of them. Finally, roll up a towel and hold it straight out in front of you. Now you will twist at your wrist, like you are giving gas to a motorcycle. Try to keep the tension tight on the towel. You can also buy a Theraband Flexbar for more resistance.
