Raw milk is considered to be “raw” because it isn’t pasteurized. Pasteurization is essentially the process used to heat the milk quickly in order to kill any harmful bacteria that may be present and contribute to foodborne illness. Those with a potentially suppressed immune system such as children, the elderly, and pregnant women should not drink raw milk as they are at risk for becoming seriously ill from bacteria in the raw milk. The process of pasteurization does not remove nutrition from the milk and raw milk does not have more nutrition than milk which is pasteurized. Moving on, is there a nutritional difference between organic milk vs. regular milk? Organic milk is organic because the cows are fed feed which is organic and usually non-GMO or free from genetically modified organisms. There is also a potential that the cows on an organic farm are treated a bit better in their living conditions. If you look at the label of these two types of milk, you will notice that there is the same amount of calories, fat, protein, and sugar in each. One glass of whole milk, whether it is organic or not, will have about 150 calories and the same amounts of the other macronutrients and micronutrients as non-organic milk. Therefore, for those reasons, one type isn’t better than the other. However, if you are looking for an alternative to dairy or cow’s milk because of a food allergy or otherwise, soy and hemp milk are good alternatives. Soy milk will provide a good source of protein per serving, along with isoflavones. Hemp milk will also provide a good source of protein. Is there a difference? What is the difference? I want to jump right in and talk about raw milk. Raw milk is raw, because it’s not pasteurized. Pasteurization is the process where they take a lot of heat, and they basically flash heat the milk to kill harmful bacteria and harmful organisms that lead to foodborne illness. If you are an elderly person, a pregnant woman, you have a child, usually those three different categories of people have a suppressed immune system. You wouldn’t want to give raw milk to somebody with a suppressed immune system for that reason, because they are going to have a higher risk of developing that foodborne illness that could potentially be in your raw milk. And for that reason, I would not recommend raw milk. It also does not have additional vitamins and minerals in it. Pasteurization does not kill or affect the nutritional quality of milk. Moving on, I’ve got organic milk and regular, non-organic milk with me right now. They are both from the same store, and they’re both whole milk. If you look at the label of these, they’re actually identical. They have the same calories, 150 calories per 8 ounce serving. They’ve got the same amount of protein. They’ve got the same amount of carbohydrates and the same amount of lactose, which, lactose is the naturally occurring milk sugar in milk. What is the difference between organic and non-organic milk? Organic milk, the cows that produce organic milk are going to have feed that is organic feed. They’re going to have feed that is free of genetically modified organisms, and that’s a good thing, right? The cows that produce the non-organic milk could be fed feed that does have GMO ingredients in that feed. The other difference, or possible, potential difference, between organic and non-organic, is the use of recumbent bovine growth hormone or, it can also be called, bovine somatotropin. On the label it’s listed as RBST. There’s a very small part of the label that will say our cows in our dairy farm are not treated with this hormone. This is a synthetic hormone that is used by some dairy farmers to increase the production of the milk in their cows. Usually only by about 10 percent, but, for a farmer, that’s pretty significant. The good thing is, though, is that a lot of milk, even if it’s not organic, is they’re no longer using that bovine growth hormone or that RBST hormone in their cows, because people just don’t want it in there. For that reason, I think that’s great that they’re listening.

Is Dairy Bad For You? This is an in-depth look at the history of the dairy industry, the changes in practices over the last 20 years, and how it may be affecting your digestion, protein absorption and overall tolerance for lactose. Find out how hormones, antibiotics and mass production on dairy farms may potentially be causing adverse health issues. For more information on how simple things like dairy can affect you, go to http://www.thomasdelauer.com Dairy - A History 1. Between 1991 and 2004, the number of U.S. dairies decreased by half, and those with an excess of 100 cows increased by 94 percent. Big business tends to do anything to increase profits, which was led to changes that impact both our health and our sense of what is morally acceptable. (2) 2. Between 1950 and 2000, the number of dairy cows decreased by half, however the average milk yield more than tripled. (2) What this means for dairy: 1. Antibiotics: a. dairy cows live in some tough conditions and consume a diet that is high in protein and low in fiber, opposite of their natural diet of grass, which is high in fiber and low in nutritional density. They are fed this way to increase production, however it makes cows sick. (2) b. To keep cows healthy enough to produce milk, they are fed antibiotics. These antibiotics are passed on to us when we consume dairy products. This could lead to antibiotic resistance, and it is not fully understood what health problems this could pose. (2) 2. Hormones: a. milk contains natural hormones and growth factors - think about it - milk is produced in mammals to create the nutrition and resources for a small mammal to grow to be large. These hormones are meant to bring an 85 lb calf to a full grown 1,500 lbs (4). In addition to these naturally occurring hormones, synthetic growth hormones are frequently used to increase the production of milk. These hormones are readily available in the dairy we drink and may affect our normal hormonal function. (3) i. One hormone added to cow’s milk, insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), has been implicated in increased breast and prostate cancer risk. In a study of nearly 22,000 participants for 28 years published by the Journal of Nutrition in 2013, it was found that those who consumed greater than 2.5 servings of dairy products daily had an increased risk of prostate cancer compared to those who consumed less than one half of a serving per day. (7) Aren’t there other nutrients that you need from milk? Every nutrient that you can obtain from milk, such as calcium, potassium, protein and fats can all be obtained from whole plant foods, such as vegetables, legumes, nuts and fruits. It is important to reduce the causes of chronic inflammation in our diets, and the hormones in milk, whether organic, raw milk or regular milk with even more hormones added in, can lead to inflammation. Cut dairy out of your diet for 30 days and see how you feel. It you find better digestion, increased energy and improved health, you are likely one of the majority who have an inflammatory response to dairy. If you do decide to continue eating dairy, do so in small quantities and be sure to consume organic, raw dairy. Resources: 1. If you’re lactose intolerant, suffer with acne, or have any reason you think your body doesn’t process dairy perfectly - I would avoid it. However, it if you really enjoy it as a source of nutrition in your diet, and don’t suffer from the side effects. It’s ok to have. Which leads to the next question… Do you need dairy in your diet? Absolutely not. While diary does have lots of important nutrition like calcium, protein, and Vitamin B12, you can easily get those from other sources. Leafy greens, lean meats, and whole foods have all those nutrients WITHOUT all the sugar or hormone increases dairy. I personally don’t consume dairy for this reason. Does Dairy Help You Lose Weight? No. Weight loss is about having two things working correctly. Eating the Right Amount of Calories AND Having Properly Functioning Hormones. Dairy provides no advantage to losing weight and if you have an intolerance could impede some weight loss progress. What are the best kinds of dairy to consume? If you’re going to get your dairy on, Low-fat unflavored greek yogurt, keifer, and grass fed whey protein are the best. If you’re going to drink milk, make sure it’s organic. What kind of dairy should you never consume? Anything non-organic I’d avoid. Because dairy is already shown to raise IGF-1, avoiding any extra chemicals pumped into cows is a good idea.

Soy - Specifically Non-Organic According to the National Institutes of Health, we do not fully understand the health effects of pesticides, but their use is associated with cancer, neurological conditions, and diabetes. (9) Phytoestrogens are found in numerous plants, including legumes, broccoli, beans, and soy products. Studies have found both positive and negative effects of phytoestrogens, so these are not necessarily bad - have been found to inhibit certain types of cancer and improve metabolic parameters (1). That said, phytoestrogens have a very similar structure to the estrogen found in our bodies. These phytoestrogens both connect to and stimulate estrogen receptors. Case Study In the Avon Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood, it was found that 51 of 7,928 boys born suffered from hypospadias, a conditions where the penis does not work and appears abnormal. It was found that boys born to vegetarian mothers who had higher phytoestrogen content in their diets were more likely to be born with hypospadias. Soy formulas are of particular concern as this intake can be as high as four to seven times that of the quantity of phytoestrogen per pound of body weight as that of a traditional soy-based Asian diet. High Omega 6 Fats It is important to have a healthy balance of omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids in our diets, however in the USA we tend to consume about 14 to 25 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids. Our bodies produce hormones from omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. The hormones produced from omega-6 fatty acids promote inflammation while those produced from omega-3 fatty acids help to reduce inflammation. (6) This large consumption of proinflammatory foods is coinciding with an increase in chronic inflammatory diseases, including obesity, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disease, and may others. 3. Flax Case Study - Rats Born to Mothers with 10% Flaxseed Diets Experienced Hormonal Effects and Birth Weight Differences In a 1998 study published in the Journal of Nutrition, rats were fed diets containing either 0%, 5% or 10% flaxseed while pregnant and during lactation. No difference was found between the 0% and 5% flaxseed diet, but there were weight and hormonal differences found between the 0% flaxseed and 10% flaxseed diet. 4. Dairy - Specifically Non-Organic In the US, the vast majority of our meat and dairy come from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Dangers of drinking cow's milk Before we discuss some of the dangers of drinking cow's milk, first, it is important to mention that I am not completely anti-milk. I personally do not drink unless it is seed or nut milk but in its pure form, it is not necessarily dangerous. Yet, due to the extreme processes that milk undergoes, as well as the high amounts of antibiotics, hormones, and genetically-modified substances that cows are continually exposed to, I can, with much certainty, say that there are real and eminent dangers associated with drinking milk from cows. All cows release toxins through their milk, as milk is a natural exit-portal for substances that the body cannot use. List of "Ingredients" Added to Cow's Milk Here are just a few of the artificially-engineered components found in the average glass of non organic pasteurized and homogenized milk on the American dinner table: A Veritable Hormone Cocktail: including pituitary, steroid, hypothalamic, and thyroid hormones (remember most cows are extremely stressed) Gastrointestinal Peptides: Nerve and epidermal growth factors, and the growth inhibitors MDGI and MAF rBGH ( Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone ): a genetically engineered hormone directly linked to breast, colon and prostrate cancer. This is injected into cows to increase milk production. Pus: National averages show at least 322 million cell-counts of pus per glass. This is well-above the human limit for pus-intake, and has been directly linked to paratuberculosis bacteria, as well as Crohn's disease. The pus comes from infected udders on the cows known as mastitis. ___________ Blood Cells: The USDA allows up to 1.5 million white blood cells per milliliter of commonly-sold milk. Yes, you are drinking cows blood in the milk and the USDA allows this! Antibiotics: Currently, cows are in such a state of disease and mistreatment that they are continually being injected with antibiotic medicines, and rubbed down with chemical-laden ointments to deal with their chronic infections. Currently, regulating committees only test for 4 of the 85 drugs in dairy cows. This means that the other 81 drugs in cow's milk are coming directly into your glasses and bodies. Estimates show that 38% of milk in the U.S. is "contaminated with sulfa drugs or other antibiotics," according to a study by the Centre for Science in the Public Interest and published in the Wall Street Journal on December 29, 1989. A study from the FDA data showed that over half of all milk was laden with traces of pharmaceuticals yet nothing has been done to control this. How Does This Affect the Cows? Furthermore, not only are people drinking in these toxins, we are also taking in the energetic effects of the life of the cow. Studies show that many cows are infected with incredibly painful inflammatory infections such as mastitis. Due to over-milking, artificial hormones, bacteria and medications, cow's udders can become chronically inflamed, thus altering the color and taste of the milk. Over time, this bacterial invasion causes harm to the cow's mammary gland, reeking havoc on the milk being produced. From parasitic worms to cancerous tumors, these diseases are often passed along to the next generation of cows, and more often, into the milk we drink. Even more, the conditions in which cows live, as well as the rigorous milking regimes, cause dairy cattle to live in a permanent state of sympathetic (stress) response, as well as adrenal over-load. When our adrenal glands are overworked for long periods of time, there is a overload of cortisol in the blood. When we drink this milk, we are then exposed to the millions of stress-response cells in the milk of cows. It is no wonder that we are a chronically-stressed society .. How To Avoid Dangers Related to Cow's Milk In conclusion, it might be a good idea to take a cleansing break from dairy. Here are some ways to avoid the dangers associated with cow's milk: Replace cow's milk with healthy natural substitutes: rice milk, almond milk, raw goat's milk or my favorite -- hemp milk. If you do insist on drinking cow's milk, make sure to buy only the non-genetically modified, range fed, organic raw versions. Even better, talk to your local organic farmer to make sure the cow's are treated kindly. Eat less cheese and always buy organic versions. Goat's cheese is the best for you! It's fresh, it's white, it's pure, it's clean, its nutritious, it's full of calcium. Soooo .... It's good for us -- isn't it? Well.....that's what the media says, but those guys are sneaky, slimy snakes that also once told us that cigarettes weren't bad for us and that McDonalds offered wholesome and healthy food. And we all know that's a load of codswallop!!! Milk and all its affiliated products (yogurt, cheese, cream) have been marketed for many years as wholesome and healthy, but in fact there's a lot of nasty stuff in milk that you don't want to be consuming. Not only that, but the proposed health benefits of anything dairy aren't so kosher either! Unfortunately, our standard non-organic cow's milk is not only unhealthy, but the way it's produced is unethical and is also detrimental to our environment. All round it's a wrongun! So why's it so bad? Well your average non-organic cow's milk contains: • Hormones • Blood/ puss • Antibiotics • Anti-inflammatory drugs • Pesticides, herbicides, fungicides So how do these things end up in our milk? Well, the cow's are artificially inseminated from a young age in order to start their milk production. After giving birth, cows would naturally produce around 16lbs of milk per day, which is plenty for their calf, but not for us greedy humans. So, to maximise profits farmers inject the cows with hormones to increase and extend their milk production up to a whopping 50lbs per day -- which is 3 times their usual amount. Of course none of this milk goes to the baby calf -- no way! The poor little bugger gets some cheap artificial stuff. And If he's a he, he's no use to the milk industry so he'll be slaughtered and sold as veal before he's one year old. So the milk industry is not only unethical, but it produces milk that is hazardous to our health because all those hormones injected into these cows, essentially end up in our milk. In recent studies, up to 59 types of hormones have been detected in our milk and when consumed overtime can accumulate in our bodies and create an array of health issues. The 2 most worrying of these hormones is rBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone and IMF-1. In 1993, the FDA approved commercial use of synthetic recombinant Bovine growth hormone (rBGH) in injection form to be used in cows to increase milk yield. It was marketed under name Posilac (by Monsanto). It proved to increase milk production in cows by 10-15 %, but it has been associated with increases in cystic ovaries, disorders of the uterus, digestive problems, enlarged hocks and lesions of the knee, not to mention mastitis (a condition that develops due to excessive milking, causing inflammation and bloody puss clusters on the udders). This, of course, increases the cows' need for additional antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs.

For what it is worth, high levels of estrogen cause excess belly fat, increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol, and also fatigue and a serious lack of drive and motivation. 1) The first food, is simply put, refined sugar and excess carbohydrates.
