South Melbourne Primary School will feature no formal classrooms says architect Ann Lau

02:14
In our final movie from the World Architecture Festival 2016, architect Ann Lau explains how Australian firm Hayball plans to create collaborative learning spaces in the Melbourne school that was named Future Project of the Year last month. South Melbourne Primary School, due to be completed in early 2018 in Melbourne, Australia, is billed by its architects Hayball as the "first vertical school" in the region. The five-storey building will incorporate a primary school for 525 students as well as community facilities such as a child health centre and indoor and outdoor sports courts. "The densification of our city means that we also need to densify how we deal with our social infrastructure," says Hayball director Ann Lau in the movie. "Most schools in Melbourne tend to be single or double-level. But this is a hybrid building with six levels, which reflects the density of this new portion of the city precinct." Community facilities will be located on the two lower floors, with the primary school occupying the upper portion of the building. Lau says that, instead of traditional classrooms, children will be taught in a series of "learning neighbourhoods" that incorporate both indoor and outdoor spaces. Architecture is an amalgamation of the aesthetic spaces and the technical skills in context to the environmental settings. There is a growing respect for architecture as one of the top academic disciplines, a design practice, and a practical business closely connected with the largest segment of investment in the economy. Architects are called upon to think of concepts, plans and accomplish construction tasks and take other decisions related to setting up a physical environment in a diversity of surroundings.

In this design tutorial I'll show you how I develop and sketch floor plan ideas quickly. From diagram to rough sketch and on to more formalized plan layouts, you can follow along as I show you everything you need to draw a floor plan using one of our new residential projects as an example. I discuss in detail: - why you should start with diagrams (and not floor plans) - information you'll need before drawing - tools I use and recommend - tips for developing better ideas - form, space, and order (of course) - using grids - scale - and what I listen to when designing... metlhedz: what's the song at 3:03? be sure to let me know in the comments below. |m| // GEAR I USE // DRONE: *Mavic Pro by DJI: http://amzn.to/2hW3dTA DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 80D: http://amzn.to/2fBWGMQ LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI * Canon 10 - 18mm f4.5 - 5.6 IS Lens: http://amzn.to/2vyErvS AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? How to Learn Construction Details in Architecture School

07:32
To Learn Construction Details in Architecture School, I recommend a several things: 1. Use the book "Architectural Graphic Standards" as a reference while you design your buildings in studio. Cruise through the book and see what kind of information is in there. There is a lot: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0471533696/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0471533696&linkCode=as2&tag=drewpaulbell-20&linkId=c93b4548dbce19768deb75fce6fdb536 2. Refer to any of the books by Frank Ching like "Building Construction Illustrated" : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1118458346/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=drewpaulbell-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=1118458346&linkId=e144ae09b3af9c831b40c4b89d4cdb9f or "Building Structures Illustrated" : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1118458354/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=drewpaulbell-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=1118458354&linkId=f4dfef0b88631a2339a08f437648b111 3. Work construction. Books can help support your education, but nothing is as good as using your hands to gain real-world experience with construction. (In addition to what I mentioned in the video...) 4. Take construction management classes or get a minor 5. Learn by drawing the details in an architectural office. Architecture Short Course: How to Develop a Design Concept

19:24
All architecture begins with a concept. If you’re struggling to find one, curious about what one is, or wondering how architects begin their projects; this short course will walk you through the process I use and some of the techniques I rely on to develop architectural concepts all illustrated with one of my residential projects. Design is a dialogue, and the concept ensures you have something to talk about. In this video I discuss the precise steps I take when beginning each project and how those steps lead me to an architectural concept. Before we can develop the concept, we have to first understand the practical constraints. My design process begins only after gathering and assessing all the given parameters for a project. Now, this primarily consists of three types of information. There’s information derived from the site - things like: local climate, the prevailing winds, the solar aspect, vegetation, neighboring structures, the site’s history, and any unique liabilities or opportunities. The site of course also comes along with legal frameworks for development, which describe where and what we can and can’t build. The second type of information we’ll gather is from the client. Every client has a set of cultural beliefs and preconceptions, preferences and agendas. Of course, we’ll want to determine their budget, and understand the personality traits and organizational politics which might also shape the design. The client and the building type together determine what architects call, “the program” which is essentially a detailed accounting of all the spaces the building will contain. And the third type of information I gather is related to the building typology – is it a museum, a home…or a school for example? To learn about a building typology we often conduct an analysis of notable or relevant historical precedents. We want to know the essential problems these types of structures grapple with. Understanding the history of the archetype allows us to approach a problem from a fresh perspective. All of this is necessary information that we collect for every project. This inventory can also serve as the progenitor for the design concept – our seed idea. And, rather than shunting creativity, these constraints often incite the creative process. Concept Inspirations Discussed: - Site - Client - Narrative - Materials - Structural - Mainifestos - Formal As with a good film, the setting, the characters, the cinematography, and the plot all conspire to make it what it is. It’s the experience you’ll recall rather than the concept per se. Sure, the concept sets the film in motion and it’s the starting point for all that follows. But this concept – the one or two-line description – can’t possible capture the richness and depth of the finished film…or in our case the architecture. Yet without it, the work is unfulfilling and so it should be clear that the concept is necessary for all our work as architects. // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? How to make an architectural portfolio (for Architects, Interns and Students)

16:24
If you're making an architectural portfolio, or yours needs a refresh, this is your how-to guide. We'll review the key differences between paper and digital portfolios, and you'll learn why the best portfolio is the one you're able to keep updated with fresh content. I recommend you craft your portfolio as an integral part of a broader web-based promotion strategy. Your portfolio should - if possible - be available (and searchable) on your own, self-hosted website. Digital portfolio options: - App-based - on a tablet for example (Morpholio, Portfolio, etc.) - PDF - a document you can print or share - Web platform - hosted on someone else's platform (Behance, Issu, Coroflot, Houzz) - Website (self-hosted) - you own the domain, you control the online real estate. The only option I recommend today is the self-hosted website portfolio. I recommend using Squarespace to get started if you don't have one already. Their templates are modern, minimal, and you'll spend time on filling it with great work rather than fussing over the layout - the container. I recommend you take cues from the portfolios of other architects you'd like to work for or whose work you'd like to emulate. Study how they're compiling their portfolios. Learn from them. What to include: 1) Sketches 2) Academic vs. Built work 3) Models 4) Renders What Not to Include: 1) Work you didn't design 2) Old work 3) Lengthy text 4) Spelling errors 5) Poor photography 6) Construction documents 7) Irrelevant work experience 8) Hobbies I also discuss the best way to share your portfolio via email and let you in on an opportunity to have your portfolio reviewed by me on the channel (hint: you have to be a subscriber). // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? Architecture Client Presentation

A behind-the-scenes look at a typical architecture client presentation for a residential project currently in design. I’ll show you the drawings, models, material samples and imagery I've developed for my clients to review at a recent meeting. Although I wasn’t able to sneak you in for the actual meeting (that’s been difficult to arrange with private clients) I’ve done the next best thing and that is to share with you the thinking and methodology that goes into every single client meeting. Together we’ll review the agenda and how I structure it, all the documents, images, and materials I compile. I discuss the importance of building a coherent story and narrative, how to structure your relationship as a collaboration, why I don’t believe in final renderings, and the special importance sketching has in a meeting environment. Every client meeting is an opportunity to listen more than you speak and I stress how important it is to compartmentalize the myriad decisions into sensible portions to make the process go as smoothly as possible. How to Make an Attractive City

We've grown good at making many things in the modern world - but strangely the art of making attractive cities has been lost. Here are some key principles for how to make attractive cities once again. If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): https://goo.gl/fwFNPV FURTHER READING “Cities are a big deal. We pretty much all have to live in them. We should try hard to get them right. So few cities are nice, very few out of many thousands are really beautiful; embarrassingly the more appealing ones tend to be old, which is weird because we’re mostly much better at making things now...” You can read more on this and other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org at this link: https://goo.gl/6wYBGc MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/RWcyzt Watch more films on CAPITALISM in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLcapitalism Do you speak a different language to English? Building Cost + How It Impacts Design (An Architect's Guide) | Architecture Short Course (Part 3)

14:34
Building cost has a direct impact on our design and it's one of the most basic and obvious concerns for architects and clients. In this video I'll show you how I use it as a creative constraint that informs our building design. Building cost is divided into two general categories: soft and hard costs. Soft costs are the indirect cost of design: architectural fees, consultant fees, permitting, financing, and legal fees. Hard costs are all the cost directly attributed to the construction of the physical building. Early on in the design process we know little about the building and so we use square footage as a means for estimating the building's cost to construct. But square footage alone won't provide all the information we need to properly describe the cost of a structure, some spaces cost more to build than others. Factoring the square footage provides an added level of precision and allows clients and architects to better plan how design affects the overall budget. Planning for unforeseeable conditions is important as well and I describe how much of a contingency to add to the project at each phase of the work. Cost considerations are crucial to realizing both our client's project and our vision for the work in the world and this video shares the framework I use to get there. // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? Draw like an Architect - Essential Tips

11:52
In this video I share my tips for improving your architectural drawing technique. I'll walk you through a detail sketch, a basic section sketch and then transition into a few of my CAD working drawings to illustrate how a simple toolset can produce a range of drawings. Important concepts discussed: - Lineweight (and the pens I use) - Atmospheric perspective - Drawing technique - Corners - Iteration - Foreground, middle-ground, and background - The 'squint' test - Shade + shadow - Entourage (http://www.mrcutout.com/ , http://skalgubbar.se/ , http://pimpmydrawing.com/ ) In the end, it’s not about copying my drawing style or anyone else’s. It’s about developing your own and the best way to do that is by seeking out the architectural drawings you like and try and duplicate their results. Study their commonalities, how do they differ from the way you draw? Some of my favorites are found in the Detail in Contemporary Residential architecture books or Detail magazines…all the German stuff. // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? How to read blueprints and floor plans.

07:20
http://www.learningconstruction.com Step by Step tutorial about how to read floor plans and blueprints. A floor plan (floorplan) in architecture and building engineering is a diagram, usually to scale, of the relationships between rooms, spaces and other physical features at one level of a structure. Dimensions are usually drawn between the walls to specify room sizes and wall lengths. Floor plans will also include details of fixtures like sinks, water heaters, furnaces, etc. Floor plans will include notes to specify finishes, construction methods, or symbols for electrical items. Similar to a map the orientation of the view is downward from above, but unlike a conventional map, a plan is understood to be drawn at a particular vertical position (commonly at about 3 feet above the floor). Objects below this level are seen, objects at this level are shown 'cut' in plan-section, and objects above this vertical position within the structure are omitted or shown dashed. Plan view or "planform" is defined as a vertical orthographic projection of an object on a horizontal plane, like a map. This video applies to a commercial or residential construction project.

Architect's Design Process : Modern Barn Studio - Material Selections

07:45
Download plans at: http://thirtybyforty.com/plan-packages In this video I walk you through the process of determining the exterior material selection process for the modern Barn Studio project, a small outbuilding which is barn-like on the exterior, modern and minimal on the interior. I usually begin the process by proposing a solution which is in line with exactly what my client is expecting. I then propose a solutions that's quite a bit different than what they were expecting and one in between. This ensures we've explored all of the relevant options and ultimately leaves the client to choose the one that best suits their needs. I discuss the use of board and batten siding, shingles (on the walls and the roof), as well as metal, glass and how we made the decisions we made. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? Traditional Landscape Design vs Permaculture Landscape Design

11:51
A young family wants to make a change and asked two different landscape design teams to design their landscape for healthy fruits and vegetables, nuts and eggs. The two companies create designs and got back with the couple. The video shows the results and below you can easily see the connections and benefits the permaculture design took into the family’s consideration. Where the traditional design does meet the family’s needs, the permaculture design take a practical look at the landscape, the couple’s desires, and joins them together with harmonious interaction. Here are some of the connections: Chicken house: At a spot in the property where it will eventually leach nutrients down slope into the landscape. Captures it’s own water. Deep bedding method so the whole thing is a egg making compost generator. Greenhouse A: Grow food all year. Doubles as a plant nursery. Greenhouse B: Heats and cools home by providing a buffer zone and convection. Cleanses grey water. Grows nutrient dense tropical food plants because it has a microclimate that can do that. Adds additional living space to the home. Orchard / Food forest: Captures it’s own water by designing it with the slope of the landscape. Fertilized by both chicken system and support species. Ecosystem design to maximum yield. Once established it is almost a zero work system. Wilfdlife habitat. Nature area for a sense of well being. Real long term low maintenance food security Garden and crops: You garden more efficiently when you have to walk through the garden to get into the house. Utilizes keyhole gardens with one entry/rotation point instead of rectangular garden that needs to be worked from the outside perimeter. The darker green areas are support species that are filled with nitrogen and nutrient accumulating species as well as pollinator attractors and beneficial predatory insect attractors to aid in suppressing pests and to create wildlife habitat with an ecosystem rather than monoculture. Vegetables washing station near home entry to maximize work efficiency that also uses the wash water to keep worm farm moist. The culling of leaves and plants from the garden go into the worm farm to feed the worms. The worm farm has a drain at the bottom so they can harvest the worm juice after each wash. Water tanks: Catches drinkable and irrigation water from the roof. Pumped out with a solar powered pump. Irrigates garden with simple low tech, low cost, efficient system. Chicken system: Creates low work natural fertilizer. De-pests growing areas De-weeds growing areas Feeds chickens Compost area: Along with the chicken house it serves as a organic nutrient cycling area. Gives quicker compost for garden needs Feeds chickens Store: The city ordinances allow having a store/stand of some types to sell directly to the public. Parking area captures run off water for food forest Community is established with sales Money is made Community area: Comfortable outside living space outdoor cooking area A visually and aesthetically pleasing area for the family and visitors Meeting area As you can see there are a lot of connections made in a permaculture design that will benefit this family, the soil, wildlife, and the environment. And this example could be used for a standard suburban lot up to around an acre or so of land. But it does not stop there. A baby boomer couple has now called upon a conventional agriculture consultant and a permaculture consultant to design their farm. This should be a show down of exciting designs and the results should be in soon.

Little Architect project in Netley Primary School - The Philippines(1)

02:55
During 3 weeks, Little Architect has been exploring architecture and the built environment within the United Nations Development Goal number 4: Quality Education. We have been teaching in Netley Primary School in Camden about school buildings and its design and on the top of that, we have created a relationship with children in The Philippines, who told us about their school environment. After our first session, we sent them this video. Then, in the following lesson, we watched their answers and drawings in the video that they sent to us. Our kids here enjoyed observing and drawing all kind of details in their own school, but their favourite part was sharing their drawings with children living so far away from them. They are just 6 years old! Is it not fabulous?

Auburn University students win first place in minority architect design competition

01:20
The challenge was to turn an Atlanta MARTA stop into a transit village that would become a "community incubator" for local services and community activities. Fifteen student teams from architecture schools across the country recently competed in this juried student design competition as part of the National Organization of Minority Architects, or NOMA, annual conference in Atlanta -- with a student team from Auburn University's School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture's winning the first place prize of $1,500. This was the first year an Auburn team competed in the event. The team's design for the Vine City Village Walk balanced the historic character of the neighborhood with its changing needs, according to Carla Jackson Bell, director of multicultural affairs for the College of Architecture, Design and Construction, which houses the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture. Bell and visiting assistant professor Kevin Moore served as advisers on the project.

Architectural Model Making Techniques and Tutorial (a step-by-step model build)

16:11
In this tutorial, I demonstrate architectural model making techniques by building a simple study model from start to finish. I’ll walk you through each step along the way offering tips, tricks and the reasoning behind the techniques and methodology I use to build models. We'll follow the template outlined in parts 1 through 4 of the series, beginning with: 1 - Defining the model's purpose. The model I build in the video is a study model and as such it isn't perfect. It's meant to be used as a design tool. 2 - We move to choosing a scale for the model. I found that 3/16"=1'-0" had the right balance for our purposes; both detailed a sketchy. 3 - Next, we constructed a simple base for the architectural model to rest on. We used limestone tile for ours, but you should watch part 4 of the model making series for other ideas. 4 - From there we choose materials: chipboard (1/16" + 1/32") and basswood scraps will be used to build the model walls, structure, roof and details. Inexpensive materials ensure you'll treat the model as a design tool and not be afraid to modify the composition. 5 - Next, it's on to fabrication. Here I list tips about cutting, blade management, gluing and ways to keep your model clean. 6 - We end by discussing the details I've added including fine layers of chipboard, carpet samples to simulate turf, coir matting to represent landscape elements, tracks, gutters and bracing. For more on the tools, equipment, and materials I use to construct models please see: http://thirtybyforty.com/architectural-model-making/ // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice?
