Filmed and edited by James Allessi ------------- American Diabetes Association Camp Aspire is an acronym for "Always Sharing Priceless, Inspirational, Rewarding Experiences." It is held at the Rochester Rotary Sunshine Campus in Rush, New York, only 15 miles from Rochester, NY. The camp is located on 156 acres of land in a rural setting, including modern year-round cabins, an Olympic size swimming pool, nature trails, athletic fields, and a fishing pond. Some of the activities include: rock wall with zip line, tree house, arts and crafts, drama and music, and a splash pad! Come join the fun! The main goal of the program at Camp Aspire is to allow the campers the ability to feel at ease and "accepted" in a community where having diabetes is the rule, not the exception. The campers learn to understand diabetes and the process of self-management, under skilled and continuous medical supervision. It is the hope of the staff that these children go home feeling more self-confident, self-reliant and having gained the knowledge they need to live successful, full lives with diabetes. We want kids to leave Camp feeling empowered and being able to say, "I went to camp and had fun!" Many of these children come to camp not knowing any other people with diabetes, especially other kids like themselves. There are friendships made which last a lifetime!

Father and daughter were both diagnosed as toddlers. Diabetes care and treatment has changed significantly between their two diagnoses. The American Diabetes Association® is celebrating 75 years of continuous progress working to improve the lives of people with diabetes through research, advocacy and education. Diabetes affects nearly 30 million children and adults in the U.S., or more than 9 percent of the population. Chances are, you, a family member or someone you know has diabetes. If you’ve taken the Diabetes Risk Test, if your insurance has paid for diabetes test supplies or if a child you know receives insulin at school, you’ve been touched by the Association’s dedication and commitment to this cause. Our promise to you: To continue to improve the lives of those living with diabetes and to keep fighting until together we find a cure and Stop Diabetes® for good.

Originally published on January 14, 2014 All pregnant women should be give a blood test to screen for gestational diabetes after 24 weeks of gestation, according to a final recommendation statement from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force published on Tuesday (January 13) in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Diabetes occurs when the body produces too much or not enough insulin or does not use insulin correctly. Insulin regulates blood sugar levels by unlocking cells for glucose uptake. Late in pregnancy, the placenta secretes hormones that block insulin's activity, causing hyperglycemia, or high blood glucose, and cutting off glucose to the body's cells. Inability to regulate blood glucose is the main symptom of gestational diabetes. The fetus receives high concentrations of glucose, leading to excessive growth and higher risks of premature birth among other complications, such as higher risk of developing obesity and type two diabetes later in life. The baby and placenta "try to drive the maternal blood sugar up to drive more glucose into the baby to feed the growing baby," Loralei Thornburg, a high-risk pregnancy expert at the University of Rochester Center in New York, said in a Reuters report. "The mother's body balances this with increased insulin and other hormones. When the body is unable to keep up with this, and the maternal glucose becomes out of balance [too high], you have gestational diabetes." Women with higher blood sugar and excessive weight are at greater risk of developing gestational diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association, the condition affects 18 percent of pregnancies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets.
