Known as the microbiota, consisting of 100 trillion bacteria, these microorganisms evolved a symbiotic relationship with humans. A healthy gut microbiota is critical for gut health and proper digestions and helps digest foods and provide nutrients while stimulating epithelial cell differentiation and proliferation. These cells regulate intestinal homeostasis, Induce antimicrobial peptide secretion, are intricately involved in the immune system and help to protect from pathogens in our guts. Imbalances in gut microbiota have been associated with: -Obesity and metabolic diseases -Malnourishment -Inflammatory diseases, such as asthma and Crohn’s disease -Allergies -HIV disease progression -Cancer -Depression and mood disorders -Cardiovascular health problems Dangers to the microbiota include: 1. Antibiotics 2. Triclosan in antibacterial gel and soap products 3. Diet low in fiber and high in unhealthy fats and processed foods So how do we help boost the health and diversity of our microbiotas? Probiotics and Prebiotics…. Probiotics are defined by the World Health Organization as “live microorganisms that can provide benefits to human health when administered in adequate amounts, which confer a beneficial health effect on the host.” There are numerous studies that demonstrate the benefits of supplementing with probiotics. Benefits found in studies include the prevention and treatment of: -Diarrhea -Pediatric allergic disorders -IBD, such as Crohn’s disease -Dysfunctions of the gastrointestinal tract -Prevention of respiratory tract infections, such as a cold Probiotic use has been shown to decrease intestinal permeability. Prebiotics are dietary fibers that have a positive impact on our gut microbiota and therefore our health. All prebiotics are fibers, but not all fibers are prebiotics. Prebiotics are food for probiotics, and it is through this mechanism that they play an important role in our health. Insulin and galacto-oligosaccharides are the only supplement ingredients that fulfil the definition of prebiotics. Once in the colon, prebiotics are fermented by microorganisms that live in the colon and form short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). The majority of organisms in the colon are anaerobic and get the energy they need from this fermentation of prebiotics. Our diet is of crucial importance in maintaining a healthy microbiota as different microorganisms require different food from our diets to thrive. The anti-inflammatory effects of fiber are likely due to the SCFAs that they are broken into when fermented by our microbiota. There are four main types of MCTs: C6 (Caproic Acid) – There isn’t a high quantity of C6 fatty acids in coconut oil, which might be a good thing. Greetings. New Zealand naturopath, Eric Bakker, author of Candida Crusher and formulator of the Canxida range of dietary supplements. I’m going to talk about how to test for leaky gut syndrome. A common test that is performed by many naturopaths is the lactulose-mannitol test, so these are two sugars that are not really digested in the body. You basically take them in and pass them out. You drink a mixture of these two sugars, and the urine is collected for six hours thereafter. Lactulose is the larger sugar and you shouldn’t really pass that out through the urine. If you’re going to pass that out, it means that you’ve got permeability of the small intestine. So that’s one simple way to find out if you’ve got leaky gut syndrome or not. Quite an impressive test to do. If you’re interested in doing a test, you can contact your naturopath or your health care provider to find out. Stool testing is another way I can really pick up leaky gut with patients by looking at the bacteria, at the IGA, and many other different markers that will show me what type of digestive function the patient has. And generally, most patients I see with chronic Candida have got leaky gut syndrome. Usually, I’ll do the stool test up front and not worry too much about the leaky gut test. It’s more important for me to get all the facts pertaining to the case, and particularly to get the bacterial balance right to see how high their IGA is, if their immune system is upregulated or downregulated. Also, to see what the amylase is, the pancreatic enzyme, we can pick up in the stool. And we can pick the colon health up. We can look at what we call short chain fatty acids or products of bacterial fermentation. We can see that in the stool results as well. The whole health of the gut is important to me, not just the small intestine. But if you want to know if you have got leaky gut syndrome, just do the lactulose and mannitol test.
