For some, simply inhaling an airborne peanut particle can send them to the emergency room with a minor to life-threatening anaphylactic reaction. This is the reality for many people with food allergies, but new science suggests these hypersensitivities could be obsolete within a decade. The Agenda welcomes Adelle Atkinson, clinical immunologist at The Hospital for Sick Children, to decipher the science of food allergies, prevention and a possible cure.

Experts warn the public to be cautious of allergens, substances that can cause allergic reaction to the body, as allergies can sometimes be life-threatening. Allergy causes can vary from person-to-person. According to experts, common allergens are food, molds, insect bites, pollen, and drugs. Allergies are 'abnormal' responses of the body triggered by the immune system. Normally, the immune system fends off foreign substances known as antigens. As a combat mechanism, the body produces antibodies and other chemicals. However, during an allergic reaction, the body inappropriately reacts, releasing chemicals such as histamine to attack protein. When this occurs, common symptoms of allergies occur. Allergic symptoms include rashes, asthma, reddening of the eyes, among others. According to experts, most allergies are not serious and can be treated with various over the counter or prescription drugs. However, there can be times when allergies can result to severe illness, demanding immediate medical attention. If not immediately treated, it can result to death. Anaphylaxis is the life-threatening allergic reaction which causes a sudden release of chemicals by the body's immune system. When this occurs, chemicals cause the body to undergo shock, causing a sudden drop in the blood pressure and difficulty breathing. When undergoing anaphylaxis, experts said a patient must be immediately rushed to the hospital emergency room and be injected by epinephrine. This holiday season, experts warn the public to be extra cautious of food allergens as some may be present in dishes served during gatherings. According to infectious disease expert Dr. Rey Salinel, some allergens can be 'hidden' in cooked dishes. "Minsan nga hindi mo mamamalayan, pero nag-manifest sayo [ang] allergy. Ibig sabihin nakakakuha ka (Sometimes you won’t notice the food allergen until the allergic reaction manifests in your body)," he said. Common food allergens include seafood, peanuts, and eggs. Experts also added, if food is not handled properly, food allergens can be potentially cross contaminated. Cross contamination can occur if proteins from one food directly make contact with another, or indirectly transfer via utensils or hands. Cleaners such as kitchen sponges can also act as a contamination agent if microscopic allergens are transferred to plates. If plates are not washed properly, the allergens can contaminate food during next use. However, US-based National Center for Biotechnology Information clarified, allergic reactions from cross contamination depends on the amount of exposure, frequency, and the individual’s threshold dose. According to experts, ample knowledge of your specific allergen is the first step towards avoiding allergic reaction. Once you have identified what substances you are allergic to, as much as possible, avoid these. Also, when preparing food this holiday season, experts said it would help to properly label food in order to avoid unwanted allergic reactions. Further, preparing and serving food that can possibly cause allergies separately can decrease chances of contamination. Using clean utensils specifically designated for only a single food type is also recommended by experts.

http://www.nutritionalconcepts.com -- Salicylate Action Plan Welcome to Care’s Corner, I’m Carolyn Martinelli. Have you ever heard of salicylic acid or the word salicylate? It is one of the least understood food intolerances on the planet. Salicylic acid is best known for being the active ingredient in many skin and acne products on the market today. Each and every day, more clients are discovering they have an intolerance to salicylates (as I do myself). Salicylates are acids that appear at low levels in many plant foods and spices, and at high levels in some flavoring agents, food preservatives, over-the-counter preparations, and prescription medications particularly those that are aspirin-based. Many people who have a salicylate intolerance can present with hyperactivity and/or attention deficit disorder, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal distress including nausea, diarrhea, and heartburn, dermatological issues such as rashes or hives, and many other problems including dizziness, tinnitus, hearing difficulty, headaches and depression. People with a severe salicylate sensitivity can go into anaphylactic shock. You are probably asking yourself- if people can have all of these conditions from this sensitivity, why is it not in the news more and on the forefront of doctor’s minds? The reason is that it has always been a mystery to the medical community… when a person comes in for a certain ailment, they are not thinking about the simple fact that heavy spices, acidic foods, or their daily aspirin could be the cause. They use the band aid approach and people do not get better… often times they get worse. When I was younger, I had every symptom of salicylate sensitivity you could name… rashes, headaches, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, and the worst of all- hyperactivity. I was literally bouncing off the walls! The doctors wanted to give me medication to calm me down and my mom refused. She knew there was a reason why this was happening. After extensive research and a trip to the allergist for food intolerance testing, my diagnosis was severe salicylate sensitivity. Once she took me off all of these foods, my life was changed. I went from being a 2nd grade non-reader and C student to a fabulous reader and an A student. The rashes were gone. I was not climbing the walls. My chronic daily stomachaches and headaches were a thing of the past. But the most amazing part of this whole story is that my mom, Bonnie Minsky, wouldn’t give up in her fight to find out what was wrong with me and this is what led her to go back to school to become a nutritionist and help thousands of people get well. I guess salicylates did have a positive impact for once!! If you would like more information on Salicylates, our new Salicylate Action plan can help you identify, resolve, and replace salicylates in your environment. If you think you already have a salicylate intolerance, it is included in the screening with our Biotrition Food Intolerance test. As always, for individualized lifestyle consulting, I am available at the office on Wednesdays and Thursdays or by appointment.

Gluten intolerance, also called gluten sensitivity or Celiac Disease- when it’s in its most severe form- can have symptoms that range from no symptoms to life threatening or debilitating chronic health problems and anywhere in between. Often, these symptoms are not consistent from person to person and this is part of what makes gluten testing or Diagnosing Gluten Sensitivity so difficult for medical professionals. Gluten sensitivity and intolerance can manifest as much more than just IBS-like symptoms and stomach problems. That’s why doctors are more likely to dismiss the idea that you even have this because if they don’t hear about digestive problems as your chief complaint, then it must be something else. More than 55 diseases have been linked to gluten, the protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. It's estimated that 99% of the people who have either gluten intolerance or celiac disease are never diagnosed. But how can you tell if you really are gluten intolerant? For some, eating this mainly wheat-derived protein is just fine, while others experience a full range of symptoms, some of which can make life nightmarish. If you have experienced at least 7 of these 10 symptoms after eating foods containing gluten, it might be time to think about modyfying your diet. But not all anaphylactic reactions are severe. They can be mild with subtler symptoms. And most people don't know that if you've had a mild reaction in the past, you're at risk of having a life threatening one in the future. FOOD ALLERGY Symptoms, Causes & Treatments OVERVIEW Food allergy is an immune system reaction that occurs soon after eating a certain food. Even a tiny amount of the allergy-causing food can trigger signs and symptoms such as digestive problems, hives or swollen airways. In some people, a food allergy can cause severe symptoms or even a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis. Food allergy affects an estimated 6 to 8 percent of children under age 3 and up to 3 percent of adults. While there's no cure, some children outgrow their food allergy as they get older. It's easy to confuse a food allergy with a much more common reaction known as food intolerance. While bothersome, food intolerance is a less serious condition that does not involve the immune system. SYMPTOMS For some people, an allergic reaction to a particular food may be uncomfortable but not severe. For other people, an allergic food reaction can be frightening and even life threatening. Food allergy symptoms usually develop within a few minutes to two hours after eating the offending food. The most common food allergy signs and symptoms include: • Tingling or itching in the mouth. • Hives, itching or eczema. • Swelling of the lips, face, tongue and throat or other parts of the body. • Wheezing, nasal congestion or trouble breathing. • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting. • Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting. Anaphylaxis In some people, a food allergy can trigger a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. This can cause life-threatening signs and symptoms, including: • Constriction and tightening of the airways. • A swollen throat or the sensation of a lump in your throat that makes it difficult to breathe. • Shock with a severe drop in blood pressure. • Rapid pulse. • Dizziness, lightheadedness or loss of consciousness. CAUSES When you have a food allergy, your immune system mistakenly identifies a specific food or a substance in food as something harmful. In respose, your immune system triggers cells to release an antibody known as immunoglobulin E to neutralize the allergy-causing food or food substance (the allergen). The next time you eat even the smallest amount of that food, immunoglobulin E antibodies sense it and signal your immune system to release a chemical called histamine, as well as other chemicals, into your bloodstream. These chemicals cause allergy symptoms. In adults, the majority of food allergies are triggered by certain proteins in: • Shellfish, such as shrimp, lobster and crab. • Peanuts. • Tree nuts, such as walnuts and pecans. • Fish. In children, food allergies are commonly triggered by proteins in: • Peanuts. • Tree nuts. • Eggs. • Cow's milk. • Wheat. • Soy. TREATMENTS The only way to avoid an allergic reaction is to avoid the foods that cause signs and symptoms. However, despite your best efforts, you may come into contact with a food that causes a reaction. For a minor allergic reaction, over-the-counter or prescribed antihistamines may help reduce symptoms. These drugs can be taken after exposure to an allergy-causing food to help relieve itching or hives. However, antihistamines can't treat a severe allergic reaction. For a severe allergic reaction, you may need an emergency injection of epinephrine and a trip to the emergency room. Many people with allergies carry an epinephrine autoinjector. This device is a combined syringe and concealed needle that injects a single dose of medication when pressed against your thigh. If your doctor has prescribed an epinephrine autoinjector: Be sure you know how to use the autoinjector. Also, make sure the people closest to you know how to administer the drug — if they are with you in an anaphylactic emergency, they could save your life. Carry it with you at all times. It may be a good idea to keep an extra autoinjector in your car or in your desk at work. Always be sure to replace epinephrine before its expiration date or it may not work properly.

For more on gluten sensitivity: http://draxe.com/gluten-sensitivity-diet/?utm_campaign=Youtube-Sept-2014&utm_medium=social&utm_source=youtube&utm_term=gluten In this video, I’m going to talk about what gluten sensitivity is, symptoms, and side effects. A few of the warning signs that indicate you are gluten sensitive are digestive issues, food allergies, autoimmune disease, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, weight gain, joint pain, arthritis, brain inflammation, ADHD, autism, hypothyroidism, or hormone imbalance. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye that has been hybridized today, resulting in a new breed of gluten. This protein gets into your gut and causes intestinal inflammation, resulting in autoimmune disease and other problems. If you're gluten sensitive and are going gluten free, you can follow the GAPS diet, which supports your digestive system. In addition, taking supplements like L- Glutamine, digestive enzymes, and probiotics will help your body heal from gluten sensitivity. Following these tips you will notice an overall improvement in your gluten sensitivity symptoms! When Brynn was a baby, her parents noticed she was fussy and would vomit after eating. Several area hospitals couldn't help Brynn and her multiple adverse reactions to different foods. Then Brynn's parents took her to Loyola University Health System, where she was seen by Dr. Sara Doss, a primary care specialist, and Dr. Joyce Rabbat, a pediatric allergy specialist. The two collaborated on Brynn's care with other Loyola specialists. Brynn was diagnosed with Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES). In this rare condition, certain foods trigger an allergic reaction in the gastrointestinal system, causing a reaction like vomiting and diarrhea. The doctors came up with a long-term plan that helped Brynn's family manage her allergies. Today, Brynn is growing, gaining weight and enjoying some of her favorite foods. For more information or to make an appointment with a Loyola Pediatric physician, please call (888) LUHS-888/(888) 584-7888.

Like most toddlers, Ivy loves the water, but in her case bath time can only last a few seconds. Her skin turns red with painful blisters when it comes into contact with water. Her parents say all water, hot or cold, causes Ivy to have a severe allergic reaction. It’s so severe; it even impacts her when she cries, according to her parents, Brittany and Daniel Angerman. Ivy's baby sister, Grace doesn't have the condition.

http://mysparkhealth.com Food sensitivities are different from food allergies in the reaction that they create in the body. Many doctors test only immediate food allergies, such as peanuts, that cause an immediate, anaphylactic reaction, but this does not give information about how repeated exposure to certain foods over a longer term can impact health. Patients with food sensitivities experience a variety of symptoms, including diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating, fatigue, anxiety, poor concentration, and low mood. By testing for food sensitivities, we take guesswork out of the equation so that you have a clear sense of which foods to include and avoid in your diet, and put a plan in place for symptom relief in both the short and long term.
