Common triggers include: Foods. The role of food allergy or intolerance in irritable bowel syndrome is not yet clearly understood, but many people have more severe symptoms when they eat certain things. A wide range of foods has been implicated — chocolate, spices, fats, fruits, beans, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, milk, carbonated beverages and alcohol to name a few. Stress. Most people with IBS find that their signs and symptoms are worse or more frequent during periods of increased stress, such as finals week or the first weeks on a new job. What is Gluten Allergy and Celiac Disease?
April is Irritable Bowel Syndrome Awareness month. One of the conditions associated in some people with IBS is Gluten allergy. It is a highly under-diagnosed condition, therefore worth spreading public awareness about it. Gluten is a Protein, which can be found in Wheat, Barley, and Rye. The disease associated with gluten intolerance or allergy is called Celiac disease. Celiac disease is an inflammatory condition of the small intestine that affects some people with genetic predisposition. The inflammation damages the mucosa of the small intestine, which results in a lot of the symptoms and deficiencies associated with gluten allergy. About a third of Caucasians are genetically predisposed to Celiac disease, but not all of them get Celiac disease. Usually avoidance and exclusion of Gluten resolves symptoms of Celiac disease. Women are twice as likely to be affected and diagnosed with Celiac disease than men. Some autoimmune conditions like Type-1 Diabetes, Sjogern's disease, lupus, thyroid disease and some adrenal diseases (Addison's disease) are also associated with Celiac disease. People who have Down's syndrome also have a high chance of having Celiac disease. People classically present with symptoms of diarrhea, weight loss, iron deficiency anemia, lactose intolerance, frequent constipation, severe abdominal pain and obstruction, vomiting, and infertility. Chronic gluten intolerance results in osteoporosis and iron deficiency anemia mainly due to poor absorption of minerals and vitamins like Calcium, Vitamin D, and iron from the gut. However, unless gluten is excluded, taking vitamins or minerals won't result in reversing the disease or brittle bones. Gluten Allergy can be diagnosed through blood tests, endoscopy with biopsy of the duodenal mucosa, and genetic testing. However, if you're already on a gluten free diet, genetic testing is the only test, which will show Gluten allergy. If you have celiac disease, lifelong avoidance of gluten is strongly recommended. Also you need to have your levels of vitamins and minerals like Vitamin D, B12, folic acid, zinc and copper checked frequently. There are a lot of support groups for people with Celiac disease and gluten allergy as well as a general public awareness and availability of Gluten free products in a lot of mainstream supermarkets. Visiting a dietitian and/or a physician who has expertise dealing with people with Celiac disease is also highly effective. If you have any of the symptoms above, please make an appointment to get tested for Gluten sensitivity. If you are not on a Gluten free diet, Celiac disease can be diagnosed through a blood test. Dr. Pouya Shafipour is a Family Medicine Specialist who also specializes in obesity, nutrition and weight loss located in West Los Angeles, California. Digestion Diaries: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) - The Whole Story
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) IBS, as the name implies, is NOT a disease. It is a syndrome. Why do they call it a syndrome? When there are tens of millions of people suffering with a group of symptoms and those symptoms are not easily confirmed with a specific lab test or by taking a specific medication, or even by following a specific protocol, that’s a syndrome, not a disease. Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome Popular IBS symptoms include: Bloating Bowel movement issues Constipation Loose stool Pain or discomfort in the abdomen Food sensitivities and food allergies Symptoms indirectly associated with IBS include: Brain fog Memory issues Headaches Neck and back pain Joint pain Muscle pain Fatigue Anxiety or depression Most people don’t realize the connection between their gut, their IBS symptoms and the “indirect” symptoms that are commonly experienced by IBS sufferers. After over two decades of clinical experience, I have come to understand that most of the above symptoms people come to me for are actually gut problems that are causing inflammation in the joints, muscles or even the brain. Virtually every chronic symptom that you suffer from can be tied back to the gut. The symptoms that you experience is your body doing its best to adapt to the irritated bowel. What Causes IBS? Here’s where some people get frustrated: There is no single cause of IBS, therefore there is no single solution that works for everyone. There are common causes though and your particular cause could be any or all of these: Stomach bug or infection (parasite, yeast, candida, virus, bacteria) Poor diet Food sensitivities or food allergies including those to gluten, dairy, and sugar Emotional stress, acute or chronic Genetic predispositions Medication side effects Natural Solutions For IBS What do people try to get better? Diets: Gluten-free, paleo, Whole30, vegan, ketogenic, juicing Supplements: Probiotics, digestive enzymes, herbs, digestive cleanses Stress relief: psychotherapy, meditation, exercise All of these treatments can help but what I find most commonly is that people experiment with various diets, supplements and protocols but still don’t get the results they are looking for. Why is that? The main reason is that they have not sat down and set up a comprehensive plan that keeps in mind all of the causes of IBS and come up with a step-by-step approach to address them. There is simply more to it than telling you to “try this probiotic,” or “just stop eating gluten.” This what I’ve been doing with patients for years: Analyze your gut through lab testing Get a comprehensive history of all of your issues and lifestyle habits Evaluate your stress levels and your ability to handle stress Evaluate your physical stresses and your level of physical fitness Discuss a plan that addresses all of the causes of your IBS Keep you compliant to a treatment plan with proper support Re-evaluate and adapt the plan as needed Are you ready to treat your Irritable Bowel Syndrome holistically? Candida Case Study 3: Trudy Irritable Bowel Syndrome
http://www.canxida.com/ - Premium Range of Dietary Supplements for Candida Yeast Infections. Trudy came to see me not that long ago complaining of irritable bowel syndrome. She'd had ongoing constipation and diarrhea for over 10 years. Too many to remember she told me. Trudy had been treated for irritable bowel syndrome by every practitioner she'd seen and was never considered to be a person to have a serious Candida yeast infection. Because she told them all that is what the medical doctor had diagnosed her with several years ago, IBS, so of course, once she was labeled as an IBS patient, irritable bowel syndrome is what it was and that's what all the practitioners basically treated her for. Monkey see; monkey do. I've heard it all before. I call it parrot talk. If you keep parroting the same thing, people start copying that. And even many natural practitioners and even some top professionals she saw treated her for IBS, so they looked at various IBS diets. The SED diet, the GAPS diet, the Paleo diet, you name it; she's been on every kind of diet this woman. I've written here, they were the natural practitioners who had placed her on strict exclusion diets and the allergy diets, and the doctor had treated her several times with antibiotics before he washed his hands of her and placed her in the “too hard” basket. The bowel specialist concluded there was nothing the matter with Trudy after all the standard investigations like colonoscopy, endoscopy, abdominal x-rays, and countless blood tests all came back as being normal. I've heard it all before. I've written here also, whenever I teach students about digestive problems, I say, “If the health professional diagnosed IBS or if you can't find the reason for the patient's digestive malfunction, suspect an immune problem underpinning it, usually there's Candida not far behind or dysbiosis, bad bacteria, parasites. You could find Blastocystis in there and Dientamoeba. There could be any one of a number of different bugs underpinning that that no one has really diagnosed.” Trudy mentioned that she had an itchy scalp. And on close inspection, I noticed that both her big toenails were thickened and discolored. We completed a stool test and there it was, yeast in all three stool samples. But not only yeast, she had also several other bacteria and parasites present, which is typical of a chronic ongoing yeast case like this. The opportunity exists for such a proliferation of dysbiosis; hence the term “opportunistic infection.” Trudy had a stool test completed years ago, but was only tested for basic pathogens like giardia campylobacter, pampas pyridium and rotavirus, and nothing really came up. Many doctors, if they do a stool test, a convention doctor would do a very narrow test. When I do them, I tend to do a broad test, so I look at a whole range of different things. This lady used to work in a daycare center, so she was only really checked for children's infectious bowel diseases, so they basically missed the boat. All results were negative and Trudy left with no answers. Of course, if all the professionals come back with NAD, nominal at diagnosis, the patient develops increasing anxiety. They start getting mood disorders. They start drinking more. Swallowing all kinds of antidepressants and they just go from bad to worse. One of my biggest disgusts with conventional treatment of digestive complaints is the routinely overzealous prescribing of antibiotics. I've seen this with thousands of patients over the years where antibiotics just destroy people's guts. They just get sicker and sicker, to the point where the doctors wash their hands of these patients. They just get rid of them. Discard them for what I call a “low hanging fruit.” They look for other patients they can make money out of or give more drugs to because what can they do? You make someone sick enough, you can't treat them anymore, just get rid of them because there's plenty of other sick people out there. You may find I'm a little bit strange saying that, but this is based on clinical experience of many years in the business. Trudy had developed sore throats and chesty coughs in her late 40s, was prescribed penicillin three to four times a year for a few years, then developed digestive problems, and was then again treated with more antibiotics. As long as the doctors keep on prescribing these drugs, they keep people like me in business. What can we learn from Trudy's case? We can learn a lot of things. We can learn that drugs are useless, bloody useless. Giving people recurring antibiotics is like giving people recurring credit.

What is Gluten? |Celiac Disease/Non-celiac Gluten sensitivity/IBS/Wheat Allergy |Symptoms| Diagnosis
What is Gluten?? This is the main question that a person who is new to this term asks and wants to know about, so today in this video you will get to know all about Gluten, diseases due to it, their symptoms diagnosis and much more. . . Gluten is a family of proteins found in grains like wheat, spelt, rye and barley. Gliadin and glutenin are the two main gluten proteins. . What is gluten? Gluten is a family of proteins found in grains like wheat, rye, spelt and barley. Of the gluten-containing grains, wheat is by far the most commonly consumed. The two main proteins in gluten are glutenin and gliadin. Gliadin is responsible for most of the negative health effects. When flour is mixed with water, the gluten proteins form a sticky network that has a glue-like consistency. This glue-like property makes the dough elastic, and gives bread the ability to rise when baked. It also provides a chewy, satisfying texture. Interestingly, the name glu-ten is derived from this glue-like property of wet dough. Bottom Line: Gluten is a family of proteins found in grains like wheat, spelt, rye and barley. Gliadin and glutenin are the two main gluten proteins. Why is gluten bad for some people? Most people tolerate gluten just fine. However, it can cause problems for people with certain health conditions. This includes celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, wheat allergy and some other diseases. Celiac disease Celiac disease, also spelled as coeliac disease, is the most severe form of gluten intolerance. It affects about about 0.7-1% of the population. It is an autoimmune disorder, and involves the body treating gluten as a foreign invader. The immune system attacks the gluten, as well as the lining of the gut. This damages the gut wall, and may cause nutrient deficiencies, anemia, severe digestive issues and an increased risk of many diseases. The most common symptoms of celiac disease are digestive discomfort, tissue damage in the small intestines, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, headache, tiredness, skin rashes, depression, weight loss and foul-smelling feces. However, some people with celiac disease do not have digestive symptoms, but may have other symptoms like tiredness or anemia. For this reason, celiac disease can be very difficult to diagnose. In fact, up to 80% of people have celiac disease don't know that they have it. Bottom Line: Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that makes the body attack gluten in the digestive system. This can cause severe digestive disorders and other health problems. Non-celiac gluten sensitivity There are many people who do not test positive for celiac disease, but still react negatively to gluten. This condition is called non-celiac gluten sensitivity. It is currently not known how many people have this condition, but it has been estimated to be in the range of 0.5-13%. Symptoms of gluten sensitivity include diarrhea, stomach pain, tiredness, bloating and depression. There is no clear definition of non-celiac gluten sensitivity, but the diagnosis is made when a patient reacts negatively to gluten, but celiac disease and allergies have been ruled out. However, some experts believe this isn't a real condition. They think the adverse effects are imaginary or caused by substances other than gluten. One study looked at almost 400 people with self-diagnosed gluten intolerance, and investigated whether they improved on a gluten-free diet (20). The results showed that only 26 people had celiac disease, while 2 had a wheat allergy. Only 27 of the remaining 364 people were diagnosed as gluten sensitive. That means that of the 400 who thought they were gluten intolerant, only 55 people (14.5%) actually had an issue with gluten. Therefore, many people who think they're gluten intolerant actually have other causes for their symptoms. Bottom Line: Many people react negatively to gluten but do not have celiac disease. This condition, known as non-celiac gluten sensitivity, is controversial. Irritable bowel syndrome, wheat allergy and others Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common digestive disorder that causes symptoms like abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, gas and diarrhea. It's a chronic condition, but many people are able to manage their symptoms with diet, lifestyle changes and stress management. Interestingly, studies have shown that some individuals with IBS may benefit from a gluten-free diet. For about 1% of the population, a wheat allergy may be causing digestive issues after consuming gluten. Furthermore, studies have shown that a gluten-free diet may benefit some individuals with schizophrenia, autism and a disease called gluten ataxia. Bottom Line: Gluten may be problematic for people with irritable bowel syndrome and wheat allergy. People with schizophrenia, autism and gluten ataxia may also benefit from a gluten-free diet. . . . Candida Case Study 9: Wendy Chronic Allergies and IBS
http://www.canxida.com/ - Premium Range of Dietary Supplements for Candida Yeast Infections. Thanks for checking out my video again. Another case history for you today. This is going to be case history number nine. This is a 48-year-old lady called Wendy. In fact, Wendy used to be our babysitter many years ago. Wendy's a very lovely lady, but I found her to be one of those what I call “supersensitive” people. Sensitive to everything in her environment, every single thing. I'm going to read a little bit out of my book and then I'm going to give you some explanation about the case. Wendy was a woman in her 40s that used to be our babysitter 10 years ago. She called me up with urgency one evening to tell me that a gas heater in our lounge was making her physically sick and I had to rush home. She had all the windows wide open and felt physically ill. When I spoke with her further about this, it became apparent that she was supersensitive to any household cleansers, aerosols, perfumes, colognes, and felt absolutely terrible near cigarette smoke. She could only drink water that was bottled in glass and her diet was limited to a handful of foods. This lady had a bowel problem that she'd been trying to control for many, many years and had a long history of oral contraceptive pill use. Twenty years ago, Wendy returned from India with a bad case of diarrhea. Her doctor placed her on several rounds of antibiotics and she's not been well since. After several months on the Candida Crusher program, Wendy's diet had become far less restrictive and she was hardly reacting to her environment at all. And now Wendy can even drink tap water and low and behold, she can even drink wine, which was inconceivable many years ago. Can you relate to Wendy? Are you a person who's traveled, maybe developed some kind of diarrhea or bowel problem after a party or a vacation in the Caribbean or the Pacific or wherever you've been to? Have you had a gut problem and noticed that your health's gone downhill over the years? You've become increasingly reactive to foods, maybe inhaling allergens, environmental toxins and things like that. Maybe you've got parasites or Candida internally. Antibiotics often are a waste of time because they just increase the toxic burden. They eradicate beneficial bacteria and allow parasites to thrive even more. In most cases, I've found antibiotics completely useless for a lot of gut related problems. I've performed well over 1,000 stool tests and I can tell you, I'm amazed when the panels come back to see what level of deficiencies people have with beneficial bacteria and how many parasites they really have in their digestive system. It's phenomenal. Some of my patients have been sick for 10, 15, or 20 years after a trip and they've never been well. Some are on sickness benefits. Some have been divorced. They can't tolerate life anymore. When you've got a bowel problem and you're going to the toilet 10 times a day, it's not much fun. You lose your confidence. You can't go out anywhere. You get pain in the gut. You get a lot of bloating, a lot of gas. You may have lost a lot of weight or gained a lot of weight. It's a very embarrassing thing to have a bowel problem. It's not something you really want to talk about. I can help you out. If you want to spend some time with me, you can certainly book into see me online through Skype and I can talk you through this. This sort of patient responds extremely well to Canxida, the antifungal dietary supplement I manufactured a while ago now. I've had many, many, many patients in a lot of countries around the world really benefiting from Canxida. It's fantastic for people like Wendy. You start on one tablet, you build up to three tablets a day, and in no time at all, you're going to nail a lot of these parasites. Read my book on the fermented and cultured foods. It gives you a good explanation on how to really increase a lot of beneficials in your digestive system as well. I hope you found this video of benefit to you if you've got a gut problem. Thanks for tuning in.

Irritable bowel syndrome
http://drsusanjamieson.com Description of a multi-faceted integrative health approach to a patient with irritable bowel syndrome: using counseling; food allergy and intolerance treatments; herbalism; nutritional and dietary advice; relaxation and anti- stress techniques; psychology. In this example, I show how the integrative health approach helps our patients. Presentation to Singapore Wellness Association on Integrative medicine and what it is, from an integrative health physician who has been practicing for 25 years. Integrative medicine is combining the best of EAstern and Western philosophies and healing systems;Integrative medicine is combining drugs and herbs/homeopathy; Integrative medicine is combining mind, body, emotions Presentation to Singapore Wellness Association on Integrative medicine and what it is, from an integrative health physician who has been practicing for 25 years. Integrative medicine is combining the best of Eastern and Western philosophies and healing systems;Integrative medicine is combining drugs and herbs/homeopathy; Integrative medicine is combining mind, body, emotions Transcript below: Thank you for asking me to speak here in Singapore. It's a pleasure to here! So Integrative Health, what is it? What Integrative Health or Integrative Medicine is not only the merging of Eastern and Western philosophies and healing systems, but of course it's using Western medication, drugs, pharmaceuticals as well as natural remedies, diet, supplements, herbs and homeopathy. The idea is to use whatever the patient needs. The idea is not a cookie cutter operation, like you have adisease, everyone gets the same treatment. Everyone needs an individualized, personalized treatment. Everyone's different, they've got a different medical history, they've got a different physiology, a different emotional state, social circumstance and they have different preferences and tolerances. So Integrative medicine speaks to this and also puts much more importance on the doctor-patient relationship. We are also integrating mind and body. As you all know, I'm sure you know in this audience, every thought we think has a direct reaction in our body. An obvious exam is, when you watch a movie, I don't know about you, but I get very very stressed, sometimes my pulse is about a hundred and ten a minute if it's one of those thrillers or frightening movies. So the stressful thought simply increases our pulse rate, increases our blood pressure, increases our respiratory rate. In integrative health, we're paying attention to the mind and the emotions, the body and the physiology, the herbs, the diet as well as drugs and Eastern-Western philosophies. So let's talk about patients. I'll give you some examples of what I do to day to day in my integrative health practice. Now, as Stephanie is a typical Hong Kong patient, 34 year old banker. She's doing very well at work, works very hard. I've made the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome. This primarily our job as doctors, to exclude anything different such as a bowel cancer, an infection. That is our responsibility and it's also the responsibility of the complimentary practitioner not to miss those conditions and to treat them perhaps inappropriately but to refer them. So we have to work together in this way. So, irritable bowel is a condition of dysfunctional intestines. Instead of working nice and smooth day in day out, moving waste products out of the body, the muscles in the intestinal tract go into spasm and they cause pain, diarrhea, urgency or they relax and do nothing and there's bloating and constipation. So it's very common, up to 20% of the populating habit made worse by stress tends to be familial. We know all these things about this condition that's so common. This is a typical condition where integrative medicine will really help. So what can we do about this? The obvious thing is to talk about dietary stimulants, caffeine, maybe spicy food and give the patient advice about this. And the naturopath might go further to talk about food intolerances. Now, food intolerances occur up to 40% of the population. And often, 2 days after you've taken the food which is kind of difficult. It's not obvious like a peanut allergy that will happen instantly and perhaps cause death. Food intolerances take longer to react. They are a different thing, and they have more vague symptoms such as bloating, tiredness or even lack of energy. But this of course might be a slice of a pie in the irritable bowel syndrome because it's one of those conditions that can be caused by a lot of different factors. It could be celiac disease which is wheat allergy, of course that's the best known that causes tiredness, weakness, malabsorption in the gut.
Mr. Kevin was suffering from severe irritable bowel syndrome for many years with food allergies which got improved with acupuncture.

Today, we are uncovering a disorder that affects 20% of Americans - IBS, or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It results in recurrent abdominal pain, and can severely affect your diet and your life. We’ll analyze ways to reduce its symptoms, here at CHI Health! Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a chronic disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. Although the cause is not completely known, IBS symptoms typically worsen when we experience stress or eat certain foods. Symptoms include changes in bowel habits with constipation, diarrhea, or both. IBS affects people differently, but patients with IBS typically have abdominal pain or discomfort that improves with passage of stool or gas. Many different foods that have been shown to trigger IBS including anything with high fructose corn syrup, so put down that soda! Other trigger foods include dairy products, grains containing gluten, and certain fruits and vegetables like apples, onions, cauliflower, and legumes. To help identify problem foods, keep a daily journal of your food and activities. This way, when your IBS flares up, you can recognize the cause of the problem, whether its food or stress related, and try to avoid this trigger in the future. Candida Case Study 11: Jean With Serious Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Jean saw me a while ago now and came from England to settle down in New Zealand. When this patient first came in, what struck me was how thick her file of hospital notes from London was. It was literally three inches thick of notes. This patient had been suffering with multiple digestive complaints for over 40 years, including cramping, bloating, nausea, and continual diarrhea up to 10 bowel motions per day. Her main problem was her increasing intolerance to foods, and Jean's diet had become so incredibly restrictive that she could only eat a few foods, including chicken, fish, spinach and fresh green beans, and that was it. Most foods would set off terrible stomach pains she was experiencing, which caused her to eat less and less. Jean was one of those patients who ticked every condition box on my case taking form. She had headaches, insomnia, migraines, arthritis, anxiety, depression, urinary tract infections, and, in fact, Jean had everything. This patient had been to over 25 doctors, several specialists, a bowel specialist, including herbalists, naturopaths, physiotherapists, osteopaths, and even more. The main concern was Jean's weight. It had dropped to less than 80 pounds, 39 kilos. And at 5 foot 6 inches in height, it's pretty bad. A woman that tall literally looks like something that had come out of one of these concentration camps with her liberation. It was quite terrible to see a patient like that in my room because you could see the bones everywhere. And of course, what her bowel specialist in England said, he told her that she needed to put on more weight, so he told her to eat more potato chips and more chocolate to gain weight, which is why he's a bowel specialist. More like an idiot as far as I'm concerned to tell someone with a bowel problem to eat lots of chocolate and crisps. It's a stupid thing to do, isn't it? What tests were performed on Jean? Apart from the usual blood tests, this poor woman had over a dozen colonoscopies performed and each time all was normal. The last visit this patient had to the gastroenterologist, “Our findings indicated that Mrs. X has no significant disease.” No other tests were ever performed. No stool tests. No allergy test, just bowel examinations and the odd endoscopy, so that's a camera down the throat. A camera up the backside, a camera down the throat, they couldn't find anything. What I do with cases like Jean. Whenever I see these patients, I usually do a comprehensive digestive stool analysis times three. It's the best stool test you can do. And guess what we found? We found multiple issues as can be expected. But in this particular case, we found a level three of Candida in all stool samples. This woman had three plus, which is a lot of yeast that could be cultured in each stool sample. This is one of the worst bowel cases I've ever seen involving a yeast infection. That was a significant finding for the patient, and the first time we had answers. The patient and her husband were absolutely delighted, but also equally annoyed that it took 40 years to find the answers. How the hell did Jean end up like this? How did she end up like this wreck of a patient? I'll explain to you further. Listen to this. The answer's quite simple. It's through the medical system. When Jean was 18 years of age, she suffered from a terrible sore throat, so a doctor gave her penicillin. Up to three weeks, the throat was still painful, so more antibiotics were prescribed, and then more and more and more. Jean developed a bowel problem back in the late 1950s when nobody understood the significance of repopulating the bowel with friendly bacteria, and so the patient suffered on and on. Her recovery took nine months, which is a lot quicker than I thought it would take. But it was mainly due to her following all the suggestions that she improved so quick. This case could have taken five years to recover, but she short tracked it because she really wanted to get well. She followed the necessary lifestyle recommendations like relaxation, deep breathing, tai chi, and supplementation and adhering strictly to the Candida Crusher diet principles. Jean now weighs 61 kilos, which is 122 pounds, and has one normal bowel motion per day. Can you relate to Jean? Maybe you know an aunt, a grandmother, a sister, or a relation who's like Jean. She's been sick all her life. She's a medical disaster. She's become a social leper. She's basically avoided by a lot of people because all she does is moan about her health all the time. There are a lot of patients out there. It's really sad and sometimes they even take their own life because nobody will listen to them or give them any solutions. Ask yourself this question, if you know someone like this and they started off taking antibiotics a long time ago, they could be another Jean.
