Algebra I on Khan Academy: Algebra is the language through which we describe patterns. Think of it as a shorthand, of sorts. As opposed to having to do something over and over again, algebra gives you a simple way to express that repetitive process. It's also seen as a "gatekeeper" subject. Once you achieve an understanding of algebra, the higher-level math subjects become accessible to you. Without it, it's impossible to move forward. It's used by people with lots of different jobs, like carpentry, engineering, and fashion design. In these tutorials, we'll cover a lot of ground. Some of the topics include linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, systems of equations, factoring expressions, quadratic expressions, exponents, functions, and ratios.
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. Geometry on Khan Academy: We are surrounded by space. And that space contains lots of things. And these things have shapes. In geometry we are concerned with the nature of these shapes, how we define them, and what they teach us about the world at large--from math to architecture to biology to astronomy (and everything in between). Learning geometry is about more than just taking your medicine ("It's good for you!"), it's at the core of everything that exists--including you. Having said all that, some of the specific topics we'll cover include angles, intersecting lines, right triangles, perimeter, area, volume, circles, triangles, quadrilaterals, analytic geometry, and geometric constructions. Wow. That's a lot. To summarize: it's difficult to imagine any area of math that is more widely used than geometry.

Additional insight:
If you are unfamiliar with the Backward Design process or wish to advance your career as an instructional leader (administrator, department chair, or instructional coach/specialist), then I recommend reading the book, Understanding by Design, by Wiggins and McTighe. Furthermore, the framework serves as an excellent curriculum model to assist you in the development of your yearly curriculum.
The book goes into much more detail than what I shared in the video. For example, the book describes how teachers should unpack (and repack) their learning standards. It also talks about mistakes of curriculum development - coverage and activity-oriented design; which is referred to as the "twin sins" of traditional curriculum design.
While my subject area is science, the book is also packed with K-12 curriculum desing and lesson plan ideas. It also includes examples and a few templates (additional templates are available in supplementary UbD resources). UbD is a great book for those interested in creating lessons (their own or for others) and highlights several key ideas in regard to the art of teaching (and developing pedagogy).

Project based learning, PBL, is explained in full detail with examples and instructions for implementation. Teachers, educators, administrators, students, and more will develop a better understand of project based learning. This video is designed to help people get an deeper understanding than typical overview videos. The video begins with a description of why Project based learning is so important for students and in education in general. PBL can be used by teachers various disciplines. Some of the important reasons for using projects in your classroom such as allowing students to develop communication skills, utlilize 21st century life skills, become engage with the content, and share their projects with others in a public matter. The video also provides specific examples of projects that have been used by different teachers. The examples also include some of my favorite projects that I have created over the years. The projects are from different grade levels including algebra, social studies, and science classes. The video also presents the four different steps that will allow educators to implement project based learning. It begins with a driving question, an inquiry into the question, finding a solution, and presenting the material. This video is part of a google for education certified educator playlist where teachers look to earn google certificates and expand their career through professional development.

Like many heroes of Greek myths, the philosopher Hippasus was rumored to have been mortally punished by the gods. But what was his crime? Did he murder guests or disrupt a sacred ritual? No, Hippasus's transgression was mathematically proving the hitherto unprovable. Ganesh Pai describes the history and math behind irrational numbers.

This lesson develops two examples with a parabola. The first example explores graphing a parabola from an equation, finding the area bounded by the x axis, center of mass, and volume of a solid in revolution about a line parallel to the x-axis. Understanding a parabola in algebra can lead to success in Calculus and Calculus based science classes such as physics, engineering mechanics and dynamics. The second examples bounds the parabola by both the x and y axis, explores the centroid and volume in revolution.

This presentation discusses the difference between conceptual understanding and procedural learning.
Originally a Scottish research scientist, Yvonne started work as a teacher of mathematics and science at Sunshine College in 2007. It was here that she and fellow teacher Jodie Parsons started to develop and trial various ways to improve student outcomes in mathematics. At Sunshine College they revolutionised the mathematics curriculum by doing away with the text books and developing lessons which were fully inclusive and differentiated.
Both Yvonne and Jodie have co‐authored several papers and have presented at many conferences in Australia and around the world, and recently picked up an award at the ACER Excellence in Professional Practice Conference for outstanding conference presentation. They also recently were winners of two awards from the Victorian Education Excellence Awards - Outstanding School Advancement Award and the Lindsay Thompson Award for Excellence in Education.
