In this video, author and depression counselor Douglas Bloch talks about akathisia--an intense inner restlessness brought on as a side effect of medication. Symptoms include anxiety, agitation and a compulsion to move or to walk about. He also shows you how you can take medication in a way that greatly reduces the risk of akathisia. Dr. Julie Holland argues that women are designed by nature to be dynamic and sensitive – women are moody and that is a good thing. Yet millions of women are medicating away their emotions because we are out of sync with our own bodies and we are told that moodiness is a problem to be fixed. One in four women takes a psychiatric drug. If you add sleeping pills to the mix the statistics become higher. Overprescribed medications can have far-reaching consequences for women in many areas of our lives: sex, relationships, sleep, eating, focus, balance, and aging. Dr. Holland's newest book is titled Moody Bitches: The Truth About the Drugs You’re Taking, the Sleep You’re Missing, the Sex You’re Not Having and What’s Really Making You Crazy. Read more at BigThink.com: http://goo.gl/O8uR Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript: The main kind of antidepressant that is the most popularly prescribed are the SSRIs and these are medicines that increase serotonin transmission. And when you start to push on the doses of these SSRIs you start to lose some sort of quintessential feminine things. First of all it becomes much hard to climax and it becomes much, much harder to cry. But you also see decreases in empathy, in sensitivity, in passion. The simple way of thinking about an SSRI is that you have two brain cells and one is a pitcher and one is a catcher. So pitch, catch. Pitch, catch. So this nerve cell is throwing serotonin across and this one is catching it. What the medicines do is they block the recycling back into the pitcher. So, you know, I’m throwing, I’m throwing, some of this gets caught, some of it gets dropped. It just doesn’t get over there but I’ll suck it back in and try again. So if you block the recycling more is in the middle to get across. So there’s more, you know, the space between the nerve cells is called the synapse. If you block the recycling of the serotonin into the releasing cell more is available for the catching cell. So it ends up enhancing the transmission. How enhanced serotonergic transmission translates into feeling better and feeling less anxious is much more complicated. But, you know, the simplistic way to think about it is that if you have higher levels of serotonin, if your transmission is better you will be more relaxed and more happy. It’s a little easier to smile. It’s a little harder to cry. So, you know, I’ve had patients come to me and say, you know, I’ve tried antidepressants before but they always made me feel like a zombie or they didn’t make me feel like myself. Or I had a patient who said like I cut my finger and I looked down and I saw that it was bleeding and I saw that it was my blood but I didn’t really feel like connected to my finger or the blood. You know, things like that that are really, really worrisome. Or I’ve had patients say, you know, I was in this situation where I knew I should be crying and I couldn’t cry. And, you know, I felt terrible that I couldn’t express that emotion to bond with my friend or something like that. So these antidepressants do scale back a lot of expression of emotion and feeling emotion even sort of thinking emotional thoughts. If you’re terribly depressed and you need antidepressants to get out of bed and function and go to work I get it. That’s one thing. But what I’m worried about is more and more women deciding to go on antidepressants because their friends are doing it and that’s what’s, you know, more and more women who are at work are taking these SSRIs so that they cannot cry, not get flustered, keep going forward. You know I think it jives with this sort of forward momentum agenda that so many of us have and especially in the workplace. But, you know, I would say at what cost? You know it is true that SSRIs can help you get ahead and there have been really interesting animal studies where, you know, the primates who are on SSRIs ascended up the dominance hierarchy. And the ones who became dominated over got stressed out and had lower serotonin levels. So there does seem to be some component of serotonin affecting dominance hierarchies and, you know, the ability to move ahead or to lean in. So I totally get that there are advantages to being on an SSRI in the workplace. But, you’re going to miss out on knowing what’s right because you feel it or being hurt by what somebody said and showing them that you’re hurt. And so that person can learn that their behavior has emotional consequences for other people. So and it changes the whole sort of tone of the workplace. There’s going to be less accountability and less sort of calling people on their misbehavior if you’re not even feeling that anyone misbehaved. [TRANSCRIPT TRUNCATED]

Losing weight is difficult as it is but it is even bigger challenge when you are taking antidepressants. Discover why Dr. Sam Robbins, health expert, recommends Lean Optimizer™, as one of the solutions for weight loss while taking Antidepressants. http://drsam.co/yt/WhileTakingAntidepressants-LO ************************** How to Lose Weight While Taking Antidepressants? ********************** Losing weight is never fun and for most of us, it is not easy especially as we get older. Losing weight is difficult as it is but it is even bigger challenge when you are taking antidepressants. Moreover, the reason is due to your change in hormones. Over the years, I have discovered TWO main reasons for the weight gain from use of antidepressants: The first is the most commonly prescribe antidepressants, SSRIs - such as Prozac, Lexapro, Paxil, Zoloft - they work by increasing serotonin, which helps regulate your appetite. So typically, antidepressant users start eating more because their appetite has increased which is the initial and primary cause of weight gain. Secondly, there is another phenomenon that I have noticed over the years: With people who swear they are not eating more and yet, they still gain weight. After doing lots of different blood work I have noticed a change in metabolic markers: One of them being lowered thyroid production as well as a change adrenal function such as higher cortisol levels (stress hormone) and lower adrenal production. Both are leading to slower metabolism and faster weight gain. As you can see, hormones really do control everything, throw in aging and now things get a bit more challenging. In this video, I am going to give you proven solutions that will help reduce your appetite and maximize your fat loss. So, do not worry – it is not your fault. There is hope! When you’re struggling with depression…it’s hard. It’s hard to do just about anything. People who don’t understand will say, “Just exercise,” or, “Be positive.” They don’t get it. A lot of TV ads say, “Here’s a drug to fix your depression.” Your doctor says the medication will work wonders. So you take their word. And you know what -- sometimes it really does help you feel a lot better. You might have more energy. More motivation to do the things you love. To be with the people you want to be with. But as time goes by…maybe you suffer side effects. Maybe you just don’t think the pill is necessary. Whatever the reason is…you decide to stop taking the drug. No problem, right? But there is a problem. Antidepressants like Cymbalta carry a warning that reads: “Never stop an antidepressant medicine without first talking to a healthcare provider. Stopping an antidepressant medicine suddenly can cause other symptoms.” But the warning doesn’t explain - what kinds of symptoms - how severe they might be - how to taper the dose - or what a patient should do if depression or other symptoms recur. Is it really that dangerous to stop taking Cymbalta? Just ask the thousands who suffer withdrawal symptoms. Drug manufacturer Eli Lilly ran multiple clinical trials on Cymbalta prior to releasing the drug on the market. They found that roughly 44% of patients experience severe withdrawal symptoms. In a strangely worded label, they stated that “more than 1%” of patients experience severe withdrawal symptoms. A gross understatement. In another trial of more than 1,200 users, approximately 51% of patients experienced withdrawal symptoms. Dr. Joseph Glenmullen, Harvard clinical instructor in psychiatry and author of The Antidepressant Solution, points out that the actual risk is more likely to fall in the range of 66% to 78%, given the drug’s half-life. When a person takes an antidepressant, the body develops a certain dependence on it over time. Then, when the person stops taking the drug, the body reacts because it misses the chemicals in the drug. Half-life refers to the time the body takes to reduce the drug’s presence by half. Cymbalta’s half-life is extremely short -- about 12 hours. When a user stops taking Cymbalta, the sudden absence of the chemicals can result in immediate -- and often severe -- withdrawal symptoms. Share this video with your friends and family to raise awareness of the dangers of discontinuing use of Cymbalta. Millions of Americans take antidepressants. Please warn your loved ones of the serious withdrawal side effects. Share this video today to spread an awareness of the consequences of Cymbalta’s half-life. Again, I'm not a doctor, and for legal purposes I should probably say to not take this as medical advice. Also, don't attempt to get off SSRI's if you are having suicidal thoughts. Here is my understanding of what should be done to get off SSRI's, but of course, you should do all of your own research and come to your own conclusions. Do not stop SSRI's cold turkey, that is too dangerous. Ween yourself off them for about 3-4 weeks. Then, (if you can afford it) start taking 300mg of 5-HTP before bed, and 800mg of SAM-E in the morning. If you are on a strict budget, take at bare minimum 200mg of 5-HTP (and skip the SAM-E). Expect to take these over-the-counter drugs for 3-4 weeks before you begin to feel the benefits (however, this may take longer if you are coming off an SSRI since your brain's natural ability to absorb serotonin has been at-best temporarily compromised). In the studies I was able to find, 5-HTP & SAM-E were shown to be about 80% as effective as SSRI's, but have no side-effects. - Feed your mind something constructive by subscribing! 👍 Instagram: 1KnightWriter Facebook: Knight Writer Twitter: 1KnightWriter Find my Beast Mode Motivation & other audio content on Audible, Amazon, & iTunes. I lost 25 lbs in 4 weeks and was in full panic or near panic for 8 weeks straight mixed with the darkest most painful depression I cold have ever imagined. I immediately could not work and had to move in with my parents who, along with many siblings and friends, had to watch me 24/7 as I was a danger to myself. Eventually I was hospitalized in the Psych Ward for a week. Getting through each day seemed truly unbearable and I knew I would surely die. I have been put on many many different SSRI's SNRI's Tricyclics, Mood stabilizers, anti psychotics, holistic meds, acupuncture and even a form of shock therapy called RTMS. I barely saw any improvement in my condition for a full year. It was decided I had treatment resistant depression and I spent nearly every moment in tears. Weeks after starting my newest round of medications (Seroquel & Nortryptaline) as a last ditch effort, I had my blood drawn for possible hormone imbalances and my Testosterone levels came back 200 ng/Dl and 150 ng/Dl. The average 25 year old male has 750 ng/Dl. With this discovery I for the first time had any type of possible explanation as to why I was not getting better and why I might be so so sick. The symptoms of such Low T are very similar to those of major depression. I started Testosterone replacement therapy soon after and have been checking in with the world and documenting my experience with treatment as well as giving my insight and perspective on various topics of mental health. I am blessed to say that I have slowly, over the last 5 years, been improving and becoming more stable which I never thought to be possible. My low T manifested itself in the form of Major depression, anxiety, and depersonalization/ derealization for over a year. Treating my low testosterone has been 1 HUGE part of the puzzle but I have had to continue to work hard to hold on to my mental stability with many set backs. Gaining some mental stability back is nothing short of a miracle as I was near death for what felt like forever. I do not consider myself to be totally healed yet but I am closer now then ever before and aim to use what I have been through to help or at least offer support to others in need I was able to successfully come off my Seroquel and Pamelor. I work out all the time as a part of my mental health recovery!!! Weight training and all kinds of cardio rule much of my free time and I also share this on my channel.

http://bit.ly/yourfreehealthreport The Real Story about Antidepressants that Cause Weight Loss I speaking with a friend of mine I have come to find out about hwo many poeple are looking for the added benefit of using antidepressants that cause weight loss. In my research I have found that using antidepressants and expecting to lose weight has a mixed bag of results. First off using an antidepressant for weight loss is not a healthy option, the side effect seem to be the major cause of weight loss and if you like loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting well then that would be a major issue. Listen we all want to feel good, physically , mentally and emotionally and yes at times ant time the use of an antidepressant might have to be but it should only be a temporary solution and not a life long sentence. It is the same with weight loss. Yes your weight, and your health both emotionally and physically might fluctuate at times but we should always do our best to give our body and mind the proper nutrition , exercise and other natural input to create an environment where the body will thrive. In the process of coaching people on health I do not recommend people using prescription drugs but instead a more natural process to obtain ultimate health . Antidepressant and weight loss are not the best prescription for a healthy life and if that is what you are looking for it might just take a focused approached to create a healthier lifestyle which would in turn give you both, and better emotional feeling about life . Know that food and exercise, believe it or not , have a dramatic effect on both your physical , mental and emotional health . So in conclusion my opinion based on my nutrition and health studies and my research on antidepressants that cause weight loss is don't rely on them because the results will vary based upon your body type and chemistry but instead rely more so on creating a healthy life style and in turn you will lose the weight and feel great emotionally . I've never told you if I still take antidepressants. If you followed me for long enough, you know that I took antidepressants when I was first diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder back in 2008. I told the community that I came off of of medication but never gave the full story whether or not I ever took them again. The reason I avoided talking about antidepressants (which I explain in the video) is because: 1. Let's pretend I take them now - I didn't want people to think that antidepressants are the only thing that help and that all of the other tips/strategies I talk about mean nothing and aren't effective. Somehow if I did take them, it would mean I am pro-pharma and I'm definitely not on one side or the other 2. Advertising that I do not take antidepressants may have meant that I haven't tried everything and I was suffering needlessly. On this channel I always talk about doing everything in our power to help us feel comfortable in our own skin and to deal with life's challenges. Always telling you I don't take antidepressants may have seemed like I am anti-pharma, and that's not the case either. I've always been on the fence for a reason and never told you either way if I take antidepressants. I hope you appreciate me telling you the truth. Please refrain from talking about medications you may be taking and do not discourage others if they are currently looking for solutions. Ya know, Paxil, Citalopram, Prozac, Wellbutrin - they all work differenly and theres no point in playing the comparison game with those suffering from different mental illnesses. Facebook Group for victims, not open to the public, but available if you have had a similar event: https://www.facebook.com/groups/241028905999497/ Severe adverse reaction to one 10mg pill of Lexapro (escitalopram) almost 5 years ago. I am attempting to share my experiences, thoughts and opinions about SSRI drugs and what happened to me. I live in Kentucky, United States. Please comment or send an email to discuss this issue. Lexapro, has ruined my life. One 10mg pill severely damaged my brain. 8 hours after taking the pill, I entered into a world of a neurological nightmare. I am afraid this happens more often than we know. I could have very easily been placed in a psyche-ward or accidentally killed myself the first few days after taking that pill. Then, no one would be able to tell my story. What happened........ After suffering a chronic sleep disorder for decades, I couldn't get more than 4 hours of sleep a night so I went to the doctor for some medical help. September 23rd 2006: The doctor prescribed Lexapro (10mg). So I took this pill having been reassured by frequent television adverstisements that it was safe. My doctor also acted as if these pills were harmless. I took the pill and went to sleep about noon. 8 hours later I woke to the most awful, strange, powerful inner sensations. I was also filled with a feeling of dread or horror. I had never experienced anything like this before and I couldn't believe it. It felt as if my brain was dying...... I jumped out of bed and ran around my house.... I couldn't stop moving or the sensations would get worse. Sheer horror! The symptoms: Many are similar to Serotonin Syndrome. Waves of nervous energy flowing through my body like painful electric shocks Inner tremor Mania Extreme pressure in head Couldn't lay down flat Extreme panic and fear...dread Sensations of my brain and body burning or sizzling, buzzing Intense disconnected feeling from reality High Fever (103) Flu-like symptoms Terrible headache Extreme nausea Waves of sensations throughout my body and skin Visual hallucinations Visual impairments Dizzy spells Unable to exercise much unable to tolerate caffeine, alcohol and other vitamins or medicines Akathisia (inability to stop moving) Panic Showering would hurt my skin Unable to lay down Dizziness Loud ringing in the ears (High frequency) Racing and violent thoughts BRAIN ZAPS (Immediate equilibrium interruption or disruption) Racing, uncontrollable thoughts unable to control emotions Inability to focus Unable to listen to music Unable to listen to music High fever Flu-like symptoms (exactly like the flu) Profuse sweating Unable to distinguish TV from reality Felt like being out of reality Anxiety Depression (due to circumstances) Hyper-sensitivity to almost everything Screaming upon waking I really didn't think I was going to survive. It has been over 4 years since then and I have had to deal with some of these symptoms, in varying degrees, since then. I made slow progress over the years but unfortunately I haven't recovered completely. Plus, since then I have been having unexplained strokes.

The results of a clinical study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that women on anti-depressants who take small doses of testosterone had improved libido. Dr. Irwin Goldstein, editor in chief, discusses the study results.

Here are some of the most common antidepressant withdrawal symptoms! If you have any type of anxiety disorder such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, health anxiety or hypochondria, social anxiety, phobias, depression etc etc, then you have either take antidepressants or thought about taking them in the past. First I suggest always trying to overcome depression and anxiety the natural way. These antidepressant withdrawal symptoms usually start 1-2 days after quitting and can last a few weeks. You can experience anxiety, irritability, tiredness, fatigue, brain zaps, flu like symptoms, insomnia, nightmares, headaches, and a return of depression or suicidal thoughts. Make sure you talk to your doctor before quitting any drug. Tapering off of antidepressants can reduce the withdrawal symptoms. Tips for anxiety *** So how do we overcome anxiety or beat anxiety? These are tips that you should be trying every single day to stop your anxiety! Dont skip any days and remember that there will still be bad days. Its how we handle the bad days, that determines how we progress in our mental health. Up to a fifth of patients on SSRI antidepressants do worse than with placebo. There is no way to tell who will do worse. It is interesting that no comparison was made with exercise and no credit was given to placebo in this big pharma sponsored study published in Archives of Psychiatry in December of 2011. Little mention was made of the side effects such as GI symptoms, fatigue, insomnia, suicidal thoughts and even suicide, impotence, seizures, osteoporosis, liver toxicity and much more. To us it seems far more reasonable to use placebo because the largest collection of clinical trials showed that these drugs are no more effective than placebo, but they have terrible side effects. Another good choice would be an exercise program for depressed people because it is more powerful than either the drugs or placebo. Wow does Big Pharma have a great advertising and promotional team! This is my first hand experience on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). I give an overview of this and answer 3 important questions: - How to apply (Private or NHS) - What to expect - How it can help (Time stamp if you missed it in the video - 4:56) If you've ever had counselling before, CBT is not like this. CBT is a psychotherapeutic approach that teaches you how to overcome anxiety and depression rather than just talking about it. CBT can also help with: Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) Panic disorder Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Phobias Eating disorders – such as anorexia and bulimia Sleep problems – such as insomnia Problems related to alcohol misuse (source NHS website https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-cbt/) My therapist offered me solutions on how to do this which I explain how in this video. I hope this video helps any of you looking into different types of therapies. If you have any questions then leave it in the comment section or message me on my social media. Read more at https://www.biobalancehealth.com This may seem like a doctor problem and not a patient problem, but I think understanding the key differences in types of depression can guide patients to understand the cause of their depression (the neuro-chemical that is missing) and can guide you and your doctor to the right medication faster than the usual trial and error method of depression medication choices. You don’t have to be a neuro-psychiatrist to understand this type of depression that you are experiencing. Many people have a mixed depression but that is often why we see depressed patients taking multiple medications to treat both deficient brain chemicals or neurotransmitters. Today you will learn how to recognize different types of depression and how medicine addresses these deficiencies. Recent research has divided depression into categories based on the neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) that are deficient. These deficiencies cause the depressed moods that people experience and that doctors call depression. • Serotonin deficiency—low serotonin levels • Dopamine deficiency—low dopamine levels • Epinephrine and norepinephrine low levels of each • Endorphin deficiency—low brain opioid levels • Hormone deficiencies—low oxytocin, prolactin, thyroid, testosterone We will describe all of the types and the specific medications, foods, and supplements that help replace the missing neuro-chemicals. Serotonin deficiency depression has a specific symptomology. You can tell by asking a depressed person certain questions about how they feel and the foods they crave. The foods craved by S-Depression are bananas, dairy and high carb foods. Serotonin deficient patients obsess and worry, and have trouble sleeping and are all in pain. If they are suicidal they tell their doctors they want to end it all because life is painful, or they are in pain, and they want it to stop. Supplements that improve Serotonin deficient depression include 5_HT, Magnesium, Tryptophan, B Complex Vitamins and B3, Zinc and St. John’s Wort. Drugs that increase just Serotonin are: Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, Lexaro, Brintellex, Viibryd. Dopamine deficient patients are missing the “feel good” hormone, this and is associated with pleasure and reward. In mental acuity, motivation and arousal this hormone is necessary. Dopamine is a stimulant neurotransmitter in the category of catecholamines where norepinephrine and epinephrine are filed. A disease that is caused by chronically low dopamine is Parkinson’s disease, which occurs as we age and takes away our facial expressions of joy and responsiveness to social attachments. Dopamine is necessary for people to feel love, attachment to loved ones and generosity. Dopamine deficient patients complain of dissatisfaction, apathy, boredom, difficulty thinking, and loving as well as trouble with concentrating and critical thinking. Dopamine deficient depressed people sleep a lot, they are apathetic and cannot get going in the morning. When these patients talk about suicide they say, “I have nothing to live for, there is nothing in life that gives me a reason to stay.” For these patients, life is grey, boring, and disorganized. Dopamine deficient patients crave foods with the building blocks of dopamine that can add value to the medication they are taking. These include strawberries, raw almonds, dark chocolate, apples and bananas. Stimulant deficient depression involves a lack of norepinephrine and epinephrine and these patients say, “ I am sooo tired!” or “I can’t get out of bed and don’t want to go to work or to a party or anywhere! Or I am disorganized and can’t get anything finished because I can’t concentrate long enough to do so!” Medicine treats these problems with stimulants such as Modofinil and stimulants like Dexadrine, Ddderal, and other well- known stimulants. Combo medications that increase both serotonin and epinephrine levels include Effexor, Cymbalta, Pristiq. They take away the pain and offer energy and motivation.

http://www.rxwiki.com/cymbalta Cymbalta, the brand-name form of duloxetine, is a prescription medicine used to treat depression, generalized anxiety disorder, diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, and chronic musculoskeletal pain. Cymbalta is in a group of medications called serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. These work by increasing the amount of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain to promote mental balance and by stopping the movement of pain signals to the brain. This medication comes in capsule form and is taken once or twice daily, with or without food. Common side effects include nausea, dry mouth, and sleepiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Cymbalta affects you.

Serotonin is a chemical produced by the body that enables brain cells and other nervous system cells to communicate with one another. Too little serotonin in the brain is thought to play a role in depression. Too much, however, can lead to excessive nerve cell activity, causing a potentially deadly collection of symptoms known as serotonin syndrome. Serotonin syndrome symptoms often begin within hours of taking a new medication that affects serotonin levels or excessively increasing the dose of one you are already taking. Symptoms may include: Confusion Agitation or restlessness Dilated pupils Headache Changes in blood pressure and/or temperature Nausea and/or vomiting Diarrhea Rapid heart rate Tremor Loss of muscle coordination or twitching muscles Shivering and goose bumps Heavy sweating In severe cases, serotonin syndrome can be life threatening. If you experience any of these symptoms, you or someone with you should seek medical attention immediately: High fever Seizures Irregular heartbeat Unconsciousness Serotonin syndrome can occur if you are taking medications, particularly antidepressants that affect the body's level of serotonin. The greatest risk of serotonin syndrome occurs if you are taking two or more drugs and/or supplements together that influence serotonin. The condition is more likely to occur when you first start a medicine or increase the dose. The most commonly prescribed class of antidepressants, which work by increasing serotonin, are the serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).These include citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft). Other prescription and over-the-counter drugs that can raise serotonin levels alone or in combination to cause serotonin syndrome include: Serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), a class of antidepressants including desvenlafaxine (Khedezla), desvenlafaxine succinate (Pristiq), duloxetine (Cymbalta), levomilnacipran (Fetzima), and venlafaxine (Effexor). Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), a class of antidepressants including isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate), and transdermal selegiline (EMSAM) Buspirone (BuSpar), a drug used to treat anxiety disorders Desyrel ( Trazodone ), a drug prescribed for depression or insomnia Migraine treatments such as almotriptan (Axert), Amerge (naratriptan), rizatriptan (Maxalt), sumatriptan (Imitrex), and zolmitriptan (Zomig) Certain pain medications, including fentanyl (Sublimaze, Fentora), fentanyl citrate (Actiq), meperidine (Demerol), pentazocine (Talwin), and tramadol (Ultram) Dextromethorphan , a cough suppressant found in many over-the-counter and prescription cough medicines or cold medicines Certain medications prescribed for nausea, such as granisetron (Kytril), metoclopramide (Reglan), and ondansetron (Zofran) Antidepressants that affect multiple serotonin receptors, such as vortioxetine (Trintellix -formerly Brintellix) and vilazodone (Viibryd) Some illegal drugs, such as LSD and cocaine, and dietary supplements, including St. John's wort and ginseng, can also lead to serotonin syndrome when combined with antidepressants that affect serotonin. The FDA recently asked drug manufacturers to include warning labels on their products to let patients know about the potential risk of serotonin syndrome. If you are uncertain about drugs you take or have been prescribed, check the label or speak with your doctor. Don't stop any medication before talking to your doctor. Serotonin Syndrome Diagnosis There is no single test to diagnose serotonin syndrome. Your health care provider will ask about your medical history, including medication, supplement, and recreational drug use, and perform a physical exam. Other conditions may cause symptoms that are similar to serotonin syndrome. Lab tests to exclude other causes of symptoms may be ordered. Serotonin Syndrome Treatments People with serotonin syndrome are typically hospitalized for observation and treatment of symptoms. For example, benzodiazepines are given to treat agitation and/or seizures. Intravenous fluids are given to maintain hydration. Removing the drug responsible for the serotonin syndrome is critical. Hydration by intravenous (IV) fluids) is also common. In severe cases, a medication called cyproheptadine (Periactin) that blocks serotonin production may be used. Always seek the advice of a qualified healthcare provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. Serotonin, or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), is a neurotransmitter involved in many brain and body functions and is commonly known as the substance of well-being and happiness. Serotonin is produced in specialized neurons found mostly in the Raphe nuclei located along the midline of the brainstem. The axons of these neurons form extensive serotonergic pathways that reach almost every part of the central nervous system, including the cerebellum and the spinal cord. This is why it’s not surprising that serotonin is implicated in a vast array of brain functions, including sleep and wake cycle, appetite, mood regulation, memory and learning, temperature control, … among others. Serotonin is synthesized from the amino acid tryptophan and is stored in small vesicles within the nerve terminal. When a serotonergic neuron is stimulated, serotonin is released into the synaptic cleft where it binds to and activates serotonin-receptors on the postsynaptic neuron. Serotonin action is then TERMINATED via removal of its molecules from the synaptic space. This is accomplished through a special protein called serotonin-transporter. Low levels of serotonin in the brain have been associated with depressive disorders and current treatments for depression aim to increase these levels. The most commonly prescribed medications, called “selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors”, or SSRIs, act by blocking serotonin reuptake by the transmitting neurons. This results in elevated levels of serotonin in the synaptic space and its prolonged action on the receiving neuron. The SSRIs have developed into the drugs of choice because they produce fewer side effects thanks to their selective action on serotonin alone and no other neurotransmitters. Unfortunately, because serotonin is involved in a wide range of brain functions, the side effects remain significant and may progress to a potentially dangerous condition known as "serotonin syndrome". This syndrome is generally caused by a combination of two or more drugs used to raise the serotonin levels in the brain. If the medications are not discontinued, the condition may become fatal. Nonpharmacologic methods of raising brain serotonin have shown promising results in recent studies. It has been suggested that positive mood induction, either self-induced or due to psychotherapy, correlates with INCREASED serotonin synthesis in the brain. The interaction between serotonin synthesis and mood may therefore be 2-way, with serotonin influencing mood and mood influencing serotonin. Other methods include exposure to bright light and tryptophan-rich diets. To note, however, that serotonin-rich food such as bananas would NOT work because serotonin, unlike tryptophan, can NOT cross the blood brain barrier. Finally, although it sounds like a cliché, physical exercise maybe the most effective and safest way of improving mood. Several studies suggest that serotonin levels are increased with vigorous physical activity and that these elevated levels are maintained for several days after the exercise.
