You've probably heard of Lipitor, Zocor, and Crestor. You may even be taking one of these cholesterol-lowering drugs, which are known as statins. They are the most commonly prescribed medication, and for years, they've been touted as the best way to manage cholesterol. Now top Harvard cardiologists are questioning current cholesterol guidelines. The data to support this claim isn't as solid as we thought, and we are now seeing that statins can cause some serious side effects, such as: • Muscle pain, damage, and aching • Mitochondrial damage • Type 2 diabetes • Neurologic problems such as memory loss • Sexual dysfunction Watch or read this week's House Call with me, Dr. Hyman to learn more about the health risks associated with statins and to find out how you can lower your cholesterol naturally. Learn more about how to take care of your heart in a way that supports your health rather than damages it. Wishing you health and happiness, Mark Hyman, MD

When you’re doctor puts you on a statin, the idea is to decrease risk of a heart attack or stroke. Normally the liver makes 10-12 eggs worth of cholesterol a day, and statins block that, therefore lowering LDL, the bad one. Statins also RAISE HDL, the good one, which act like little vacum cleaners to get rid of cholesterol in the blood. AND they stabilize the plaque in the arteries. No question about it - Statins lower your numbers and decrease risk. BUT - DON”T THINK FOR A MINUTE this means you can eat whatever you want and that the statin will undo the damage from too much sugar or sat fat. . If you’re overweight, and your weight happens to be around your belly - that fat is like an organ, and it is metabolically active, unlike other fat that might be around your thighs, let’s say. It puts out cytocines that cause inflammation and that increase risk of heart disease. Statins don’t effect that. Losing 10 pounds will. Remember - diet works. Think Mediteranean. This week my lunch was arugula, some tuna I bought at the market, with these garbanzo bean salad thing from trader joes tossed in. I’m telling you, it was a really good lunch. you don’t always need a recipe. Fish, veggies and a high fiber carb - that’s smart eating! For more info on my work and to schedule an appointment with me, check out my new website at MaryDonkersloot.com cardiovascular risk. These decreases in risk come in the form of improving blood pressure, systemic inflammation, vascular function and lipid measures; benefits that statin drugs cannot do alone. Diet changes are also a large part of maintaining a healthy heart. The most commonly recommended diet for heart-healthy eating is the Mediterranean approach. The proportion of fat types in this diet is where most of the heart-healthy magic lies. Through limiting saturated fat via red meat, butter, margarine, and processed foods while increasing unsaturated fats via vegetable oils, fishes, and nuts, the Mediterranean diet shows promise of a balanced cholesterol panel. These improved cholesterol ratios plus those that are yielded from statin use can minimize the likelihood of cardiovascular disease in the future. Physical activity and stress management are the last of the interventions that should be made in conjunction while taking statins. Increasing physical activity has numerous benefits including better management of stress. The American Heart Association recommends completing 40-minutes of vigorous to moderate aerobic activity 3 to 4 times per week to positively affect blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Taking statin drugs or making lifestyle changes should not be considered a one or the other choice. To maximize the benefits the drug has to offer be sure to continue to lead a heart-healthy lifestyle, your heart will thank you. The right diet – full of fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans and very low in saturated fat – can reduce, and maybe even eliminate, the need for statins.

Rosuvastatin has a half life of 17 hours. That means it take 17 hours for half of the medication to be excreted/neutralized/metabolized. So that allows us to give Crestor every other day, or even 3 times per week. Very low doses of Rosuvastatin have a positive impact on inflammation. We routinely give 5 or even 2.5 mg. If the inflammatory markers are low, and there are no unusual cholesterol problems, we can even go to 3 times per week dosage. Brad Bale and Amy Doneen have even reported decreases in inflammation from having some intolerant patients LICK the tablet thee times/week. And yes, lower doses are good. My reply is usually this: It depends on the person. For some people going gluten free helps with weight loss, for others, going gluten free helps them gain weight. You see, everyone is affected by gluten differently. Much the same as the following analogy - If you give 1000 people the same medication, will they all have the same side effects? No. People can have different reactions to the exact same substance. Gluten is no different. Some people have issues with hormones, others develop celiac disease, some have migraines or nerve damage... The list goes on and on. Read this article on the gluten spectrum to learn more on this.

Statins (cholesterol-lowering medication) are heavily promoted, used by millions of people and one of the most widely prescribed drugs in the world. Health authorities claim statins reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes because they lower 'bad' LDL cholesterol. Yet these claims are contradicted by statistics and medical studies. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/07/20/the-truth-about-statin-drugs-revealed.aspx http://next-level-nutrition.com/?p=6075 http://naturalnews.com/032448_statin_drugs_scam.html http://www.ravnskov.nu/cholesterol.htm#a The hypothesis is that 'bad' LDL cholesterol clogs up arteries leading to heart attacks and strokes. However, medical research has shown that: 1. People with high cholesterol tend to live longer. 2. People with heart disease tend to have low levels of cholesterol. 3. Lowering cholesterol in a population does not reduce the rate of heart disease. 4. Statins increase(!) the risk of heart disease and strokes. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2005/05/28/cholesterol-heart.aspx http://drbenkim.com/articles-cholesterol.html http://drmalcolmkendrick.org/the-great-cholesterol-con http://cholesterolconspiracy.blogspot.com http://amazon.com/The-Great-Cholesterol-Myth-Disease/dp/1592335217 Statin drugs have become a huge global industry, generating more than $29 billion each year. Watch the natural alternative to lower your cholesterol by 30 pts in 30 days - no diets or drugs. 👉http://drsam.co/yt/Natural-Lipitor Or discover the most powerful fruit to lower high cholesterol: 👉https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYFY4Vl19Fo =============================================== 💊 Natural & Clinically Proven Alternatives To Lipitor =============================================== #cholesterol #statins Before I reveal clinically proven, natural alternatives to Lipitor, a cholesterol lowering drug and why you MUST get off this or any statin drug, I’d like to share a true story. Dr. Duane Graveline (M.D., M.P.H) is a physician, a flight surgeon and former astronaut. One year NASA was doing a yearly physical on him. He passed all the tests (physical, cognitive, etc.). Yet, they noticed his cholesterol was in the “high” range and told him to take Lipitor (atorvastatin) - a cholesterol lowering statin drug. Six weeks later, he had severe memory problems, so bad that he had short term, global amnesia (TGA). Additionally, when NASA retested him, his cholesterol was lower and he passed that test … yet he failed the cognitive test and he wasn’t allowed to go to space. Dr. Graveline decided to get off Lipitor, despite the fact other physicians, doctors and pharmacists said it couldn’t be Lipitor causing these problems. A year later, when it was his next annual NASA physical, they again told him to take Lipitor, but this time at half the dosage. So, Dr. Graveline reluctantly followed their recommendation. This second time, the results were even worse - amnesia PLUS “retrograde loss of memory” going back to his high school years. Yes, his memory loss was even more severe. He again stopped taking Lipitor and wrote about this situation in a book called, “Lipitor Thief of Memory” which was written in 2005. Which also includes liver damage, high blood pressure, arthritis, elevated blood sugar levels, diabetes, hormonal imbalances, muscle loss and lowered sex drive and impotence, to name a few. Add to the fact that my dad’s mom (my grandmother) had Alzheimer’s, I didn’t want to risk it and got my dad off of Lipitor … against his doctor’s orders. Instead, I decided to research, natural, safe and healthy ingredients and alternatives for having healthy cholesterol levels. And that’s what I’m going to reveal today. Natural Alternatives So let’s get right to it, I’ll make this quick. First, your goal is NOT to have “low” cholesterol, you want HEALTHY cholesterol levels. Now, one of my favorite natural ingredients to help improve cholesterol levels is called, Red Yeast Rice, which is a common food in Asia. In fact, this is a natural statin. However, the “secret” to using Red Yeast Rice is you only want to use it in small doses. Plus, you must use the “extract” form, not the “root” or “powder” form which is worthless. And finally, you want to make sure that the “toxic” by-product, Citrinin is removed. Any other form either won’t work or you’ll need such a high dose that you’ll have statin side-effects - obviously, no where near as bad as Lipitor. Again, keep in mind that if you ONLY use Red Yeast Rice to improve your cholesterol levels, you’ll need to use a high dosage, which will eventually lead to some of the same, statin side-effects. THIS is the real secret to having healthy cholesterol levels, naturally - without drugs. Other Cholesterol Optimizing Herbs Other clinically proven, natural herbal extracts that promote healthy cholesterol levels and balanced lipid levels, which are: Artichoke Leaf Extract (15% Chlorogenic Acid, 5% Cynarin) Phytosterols Complex (40% extract from non-GMO pine tree extract) Garlic (Extract 5% alliin) Policosanol (from Sugar Cane - Saccharum species) Improve Your Thyroid Cleanse Your Liver Did you know that 80% of the cholesterol in your body is made by your liver, and NOT from the foods you eat? This is why many times, the change in your diet doesn’t make dramatic improvements in cholesterol levels. The irony is that ALL drugs, especially statins, cause liver damage and thus, will eventually increase your cholesterol levels and this is why you keep having to increase the dosage of these drugs. So make sure you try to eliminate anything that stresses your liver - this includes all drugs, including alcohol and caffeine. But, since this is almost impossible for most people, I suggest you take Milk Thistle (80% Extract) NAC (N-Acetyl L-Cysteine) - which also boost your immune system. R+ Alpha Lipoic Acid (r+ ALA) - which also helps lower your blood sugar. Which resulted in a decrease of “bad” LDL cholesterol by 17% Additional Improvements were seen in a lowering of triglycerides (which are the most common fat types in the human body), blood pressure and C-reactive protein (which is a marker of inflammation). This was examined in both randomized and non-randomized controlled trials, so they took into account multiple variables. In fact, these four foods are so effective that several government organizations have recognized and are utilizing the benefits of this specific diet which includes these foods. And the best type of diet which includes these 4 food types are “plant based” diets. However, if you don’t want to go 100% plant based, that’s fine… You can still reap the benefits by simply adding in these 4 foods types into your current diet. The 4 Food Types For Improving Heart Health NUTS Healthy fats in nuts are very healthy, and I think almonds, macadamia and walnuts are best. Ideally you would soak them in water for 8 hours before eating, to improve digestion Plant Proteins This was from plant proteins obtained either from soy-based foods such as tofu, soy milk, or other soy-based meat substitutes. As you may know from previous videos, I’m not a fan of soy because it lowers thyroid and testosterone, while increasing estrogens. A better source of plant proteins would be from beans, peas, chickpeas or lentils. Remember that you can also have these plant proteins in powder form - such as pea and rice protein. Fiber The study used primarily soluble fiber, such as "oats, barley, psyllium, eggplant, okra, apples, oranges, and berries". Plant Sterols Certain foods containing plant sterols, can also help lower “bad”, LDL cholesterol. These are “cholesterol-like” compounds that can be found in certain fruits, vegetables, nuts and cereals. 3 Additional Foods Numerous studies have also shown that 3 additional foods are also very beneficial. Primarily when take in a supplemental “extract” form, which is far more concentrated and effective than the food source: Policosanol 2 - which is a natural supplement derived from sugarcane. Artichoke Leaf Extract 3 - which has numerous studies going back to the early 1930’s Red Yeast Rice Extract 5,6 - which has been safely used in China for over 2000 years My Parents & Their Results What’s interesting is that in 1998 I used a modified version of this diet with my parents to help lower their cholesterol. This is because I wanted to get them off of the statin cholesterol lowering drugs, which had a lot of negative side-effects ======================================== Thank you for watching. So many people go to the doctor with high cholesterol and end up on a statin or cholesterol lowering drug for years, if not their entire lives. Dr. Peter Glidden says there is something fundamentally wrong with that and that prolonged statin use can lead to many more serious conditions. http://www.ihealthtube.com

Getting off a statin drug is actually quite easy and straightforward--but likely not among your doctor's interests. The values you can obtain on your own are superior to the values obtained with statin drugs--not nearly as good, not the same, but SUPERIOR. Cholesterol is made in your liver and has many important functions. For example, it helps keep the walls of your cells flexible and is needed to make several hormones. However, like anything in the body, too much cholesterol in the wrong places creates problems. Like fat, cholesterol does not dissolve in water. Instead, its transport in the body depends on molecules called lipoproteins, which carry cholesterol, fat and fat-soluble vitamins in the blood. Different kinds of lipoproteins have different effects on health. For example, high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) result in cholesterol deposits in blood vessel walls, which can lead to clogged arteries, strokes, heart attacks and kidney failure. In contrast, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) helps carry cholesterol away from vessel walls and helps prevent these diseases. Here are 6 natural ways to increase the “good” HDL cholesterol and lower the “bad” LDL cholesterol. 1.Focus on Monounsaturated Fats Monounsaturated fats may reduce the oxidation of lipoproteins, which contributes to clogged-arteries. Monounsaturated fats are healthy because they decrease harmful LDL cholesterol, increase good HDL cholesterol and reduce harmful oxidation. few great sources of monounsaturated fats are: olive-oil, canola-oil, tree nuts and avocados. 2.Eat Soluble Fiber Soluble fiber is a group of different compounds in plants that dissolve in water and that humans can’t digest. However, the beneficial bacteria that live in your intestines can digest soluble-fiber. In fact, they require it for their own nutrition. These good-bacteria, also called probiotics, reduce both harmful kinds of lipoproteins, LDL and VLDL. 3.Limit your intake of foods full of saturated fats and trans fats. Foods with a lot of saturated fat include butter, fatty flesh like red-meat, full-fat and low-fat dairy products, palm-oil, and coconut-oil. If you see partially hydrogenated fat in the Ingredient List of a food label, that food has trans fats. 4.Exercise Exercise is a win-win for heart health. Not only does it improve physical fitness and help combat obesity, but it also reduces harmful LDL and increases beneficial HDL. In one study, twelve weeks of combined aerobic and resistance exercise reduced the especially harmful oxidized LDL in 20 overweight women. While even low-intensity exercise like walking increases HDL, making your exercise longer and more intense increases the benefit. 5.Lose Weight Dieting influences the way your body absorbs and produces cholesterol. Weight loss reduces total cholesterol, in part by decreasing the creation of new cholesterol in the liver. Weight loss has had different, though generally beneficial, effects on HDL and LDL in different studies. 6.Choose protein-rich plant foods Choose protein-rich plant foods such as legumes or beans, nuts, and seeds over meat. Common legumes include lentils, peas, and beans, such as pinto beans, red beans, white beans, and soybeans. They’re full of nutritional riches and are a very healthy, protein-packed alternative to meat. Legumes help lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, blood sugar, and insulin levels, and may even lower cancer risk.
