In this video, I talk about why vitamin C is necessary for iron absorption, and how the cartoon Popeye was a terrible depiction for eating spinach and creating muscle growth (Sailors were known for having scurvy, caused by a vitamin C deficiency). What we do know is that even though spinach has oxalates in it, which may inhibit absorption of minerals like iron and calcium, if eaten with vitamin C you can enhance the absorption of the minerals. Furthermore, if you consume caffeine, which inhibits absorption of vitamin C, you may also be inhibiting your absorption of iron. So, to maximize iron absorption, try to get some vitamin C in the morning, along with a high iron breakfast. Do this well before you start drinking your morning coffee, that way the caffeine doesn't interfere with your nutrient absorption.

Some people are hairy. Others deserve their own category of hairiness. It took some time to get around to it, but I finally decided to shave my entire chest and back, so that the world may see what I have to live with on a daily basis. The video includes some interviewing at the beginning, and some funny banter along the way. I try to time lapse as the video goes on, but if you got the time, watch the whole thing and have fun. The real shaving doesn't begin until 13 minutes in. I'd rather people see the whole process because it's not some quick decision that's easily executed. It's no wonder body builders have always included broccoli in their diets. It just so happens they've been maximizing joint recovery by consuming sulforaphane, a compound found in the cruciferous family. Studies show that this compound builds up in the joints, specifically in samples of synovial fluid, and it is linked to improvement in cartilage and joint function. There's probably no better and cheaper way to get sulforphane than purple cabbage. You can maximize the effect by sprinkling mustard powder on fresh chopped cabbage! Turmeric has scientifically been found to have a number of benefits. One that's least explored is how it may be able to help athletes and weight lifters prevent the loss of protein through urine. Studies show that strenuous exercise can induce protein loss through urine. We are also aware that high protein diets may suffer lack of protein retention due to excretion of excess protein in urine. My first time in the kitchen on camera. In this video I talk about the health benefits of brown rice and the best and easiest way to cook it. I use some leftover black bean broth as the stock for the rice. Bean broth is an excellent source of added flavor to soups or rice, plus it adds antioxidants and a little extra fiber. It's the end of no shave November, and my beard is now long enough and strong enough to get things caught in it. Combs, picks, and. . . velcro? Is the beard strong enough to adhere to velcro? Which side of the velcro is going to stick? I'll say this, my beard has always been a hassle. More than most people know. The hairs are thick and bristly like wires. The hairs are so sharp, they hurt my skin if I rest my face on a pillow. Most people's beards don't curl as wildly as mine. All the more reason to love it. Thanks for watching!

These are probably my favorite souvenirs I've ever found on any vacation. This wood was somehow special to me, before I even knew much about it. I absolutely enjoyed the smell of it, and I hope that others might come to appreciate this wood as much as I do. Guayacan: Also known as Lignum vitae, is Latin for "wood of life," and derives its name from its medicinal uses. It's the 4th hardest wood in the world. On the Janka hardness test, it requires 4,500 lbs of force to embed a small steel ball halfway into the wood. It's been classified as one of many ironwood, known for their reputation of hardness. An extract of the wood is the active ingredient in Mucinex, as the tree has been known to help with coughing. It has a variety of other uses, but since it's endangered, you'd be hard pressed to find some souvenirs online for purchase. Very few people in the world can carve into this wood, and if it's authentically hand carved, it needs to be certified and it will cost you a lot of money. It's likely these statues were carved by machine tools with possibly some small accents done by hand. If you ever visit Costa Rica, be sure to pick you up some of these statues as souvenirs. They come in many sizes and make great gifts. PURA VIDA!

Antioxidants are mandatory for lifelong health. Until they become an essential nutrient, we are left with the idea that they aren't important, but they are! They protect our cells from DNA damage, they reduce the stress of aging, and overall are essential in the fight to prevent, arrest, and reverse cancer. Turmeric reigns supreme out of all the spices with antioxidants, and in this video I give a brief overview of its many benefits. A daily recommended dose is 1 teaspoon a day with a pinch of black pepper powder. You can microwave a small cup with some water in it for 1 minute, and then add the turmeric and black pepper, as studies suggest it's cooked or heated form may be more effective. Yarrrrrrr! This is my homemade replica of Peanut Butter Captain Crunch. I use some ingredients that feel more natural and are healthier. Plus, you get to control how much sugar goes into your cereal. Probably the best breakfast for Saturday morning cartoon watching or a Netflix binge. Ingredients: 2 tablespoons powdered peanut butter Soy milk or milk alternative 1-2 Tablespoons Maple Syrup Pinch of Salt Favorite crunchy unsweetened grain cereal This makes a great dessert as well. Feel free to add more stuff to it, like protein powder or cocoa. Personally, I like it just the way it is. Enjoy!

How to cook Portobello Mushroom Steaks! Mushrooms are an excellent source of protein, vitamin D, and beta glucans. Make sure you let them sunbathe for about 5 minutes before you cook them. Mushrooms have also been shown to help boost the immune system, and help the body fight cancer. You can plate this with your favorite sides, like brown rice, roasted veggies, or even put it on bun and eat it like a burger. This is my story, and I'm finally wanting to share it.
