21st Century Skills: Self Direction – Kindergarten

04:52
Lesson Overview During reading groups, students were given activities that they “must do” and “may do” and set goals on how they will get it accomplished. They used a check off sheet where they set their goals for the activities that they wanted to accomplish in the allotted time that they were given. Students worked independently while the teacher was working They monitored their progress by checking off the activity that they have completed and continued to work on the next activity. Several students met with the teacher to do an evaluation on their “must do” work by using a picture rubric. 21st Century Skill Self Direction – Even in Kindergarten, students can begin to learn the strategies of becoming a self directed learner. Students will have to know what they will try to accomplish, how they will accomplish it and when they will accomplish it. Sacramento City College: Dental Clinic

03:22
The Sacramento City College Dental Health Programs provide innovative and comprehensive education to prepare a diverse student population for licensure and practice as Registered Dental Assistants and Registered Dental Hygienists. Through didactic, laboratory and clinical experiences, the program prepares students for employment in a variety of opportunities available in the field and the community. The SCC Dental department is composed of two programs:  A dental assisting program and a dental hygiene program. Both programs require a full-time commitment. The Dental Assisting program of study is an 11-month program and provides the opportunity to acquire a Certificate or an Associate of Science degree in Dental Assisting.  Classes begin in August each year with completion of the program the following July. At the completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take both State and National licensure examinations. The Dental Hygiene program of study is a two-year Associate of Science degree program. Classes begin in the fall semester each year on a traditional semester schedule, with completion in May of the second year. Both Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting students work in the dental clinic where students provide supervised preventive and therapeutic treatment.  This clinic is open to the public as well as to students, faculty and staff of Los Rios Community College District.  Fees are waived for current students, faculty and staff, and are very reasonable for the general public. 21st Century Skills: Higher Order Thinking – Math

03:56
Lesson Overview After thoroughly learning about and understanding division of fractions, students developed a way to explain & demonstrate division of fractions to their peers. 21st Century Skill HOTS – Higher Order Thinking – Structuring the classroom environment so that students feel comfortable using HOTS to explore topics is imperative. It does not have to take a lot of planning, it can be something that is developed through higher level questioning and discussion skills that can happen during those “teachable” moments. Because they are using HOTS, their understanding of topics and the curriculum is broader and deeper, which results in increased academic achievement. 21st Century Skills: Social Skills – Reading Emotions

05:05
Lesson Overview We had a whole group discussion using pictures taken of the kids in the class showing different facial expressions. We discussed how reading people’s facial expressions can tell you a lot. After a whole group discussion, the kids worked in groups of 2 or 3 to do a task. They were given 2 facial expressions for each group. The groups brainstormed 2 things: 1) What could have happened to create this expression /feeling and 2) how can you work with someone who has that feeling? How you deal with it will vary depending on the emotion. 21st Century Skill Interpersonal/Social Skills – Kids need to be aware not only of their emotions/feelings/problem solving, but they need to be aware of those same things in other people. Teacher & Content Area Julie Harms, 2nd Grade Learning Standard Students are self-aware with respect to own internal states, preferences, resources and intuitions. Time of Remembrance - I'm Not Leaving

04:25
In 1994, genocide erupted in the small, landlocked African nation of Rwanda. Within days, all foreign peacekeeping forces, embassies, and civilians evacuated the country. Over the course of 100 days, more than 800,000 Rwandans, mostly Tutsi and Tutsi sympathizers, were brutally murdered. Carl Wilkens was the only American to remain. Through courage and negotiations, often with extremist Hutu government forces, he was able to save the lives of hundreds of people, many of them children. --------- To learn more about Carl Wilkens and the events in Rwanda visit: http://bit.ly/TeachingRwanda Learn more about SECC at - http://www.secctv.org/ Follow us on Twitter - https://twitter.com/secctv Follow us on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/SECCEducationalTV/ To learn more about the Elk Grove Unified School District visit: http://www.egusd.net/

Sacramento City USD - Preschool Overview

04:49
This video is also available in the following languages: Spanish - http://youtu.be/-T-hJ2YbHKY Hmong - Hmong - http://youtu.be/tmL7rX2LxVs The road to success in college and the workplace doesn’t begin in high school, or even elementary school: It begins around age 3 with high-quality preschool. Research shows that children who attend a high-quality preschool program perform better throughout school, are more likely to go to college, have more confidence, are more motivated to succeed and enjoy more positive peer relationships. Because of these benefits, President Obama has called for universal preschool education for every child. “Study after study shows that the earlier a child begins learning, the better he or she does down the road,” he said in a speech in February. Sacramento City Unified School District is committed to providing the community with high-quality preschool that will ready children for kindergarten and prepare them for success in school and life. Sacramento City preschool programs help break the destructive cycle of “start behind, stay behind” that affects children who arrive at kindergarten unprepared for the rigors of a modern classroom. Currently, Sacramento City serves 2,100 preschoolers in 92 classrooms on 42 elementary and K-8 campuses. The preschool program provides: - Development of the pre-math and pre-literacy skills necessary to prepare children for kindergarten. - Development of motor skills, balance and coordination through structured activities and games. - Development of social and emotional skills such as self-control, patience, verbal communication and teamwork. - A safe, structured environment. - Credentialed teachers. - An adult-to-child ratio of 1-to-8. - Meals and snacks. - Wrap-around support and services for families. The Child Development program and services are primarily supported by federal Head Start/Early Head Start dollars, California State Department of Education Child Development grants and First 5 Sacramento funding. For qualified families, preschool is free or low-cost. Parents can choose between full-day and part-day preschool programs. Sacramento City Unified School District preschools operate Mondays through Fridays during the school year. ---- For more information, please visit: http://www.scusd.edu/child-development Learn more at - http://secctv.org/ Follow us on Twitter - https://twitter.com/secctv Follow us on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/SECCEducationaltv/ For more information about Sacramento City USD - http://www.scusd.edu/

SEVA 2017 - School News 4-6 Honorable Mention - School Rules

01:30
SEVA Honorable Mention School News: 4-6 Program Title: School Rules Producers: Joshua Muilenburg, Emelia Yang School: Del Paso Manor Elementary School Target Audience: Kids at school Program Idea: We want kids to know the expectation of what they need to do at school because kids often have excuses about why they break rules. That is never acceptable kids should know what they need to do. We made this video to make rules clear to kids, in a more of a fun and educational way. Message: Kids need to walk to their line when the bell rings, walk quietly in their line, and use the bathroom properly. This is a big issue at a lot of schools, and we think that this video will help kids understand what they have to do, to show respect. ---- Learn more at - http://secctv.org/ Share your vision with the SEVAs! - http://secctv.org/seva/ Follow us on Twitter - https://twitter.com/secctv Follow us on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/SECCEducationaltv/ Check out Del Paso Manor Elementary School - http://www.sanjuan.edu/delpaso For more information about San Juan USD - http://www.sanjuan.edu/
