Filmed as part of the lecture on "Detoxing Deconstructed" given at Bodhi Prem Yoga in Arlington Heights. Some texts say to do 5-8 repetitions of each of the 5 poses. Some list 6 poses (asana) breaking the last one (Udarakarshanasana) into 2 movements. For practical purposes, I feel it is easier to remember 5 poses and 5 repetitions each.

I put my stretching routine together to show patients some basic yoga positions. Yoga can be used for flexibility but its concept is deeper involving mindful breathing, and peace. In its basic translation, it means to yolk or bring together mind, body and spirit. I use different positions to help me get into a meditative state prior to exercise or running. I have also tried to pick postions that work on my specific past injuries. A basic routine can be created for a 10-20 minute program that will help reap better health and stress reduction. In time, flexibility will be attained and health symptoms will be reduced. Namaste.

Gave a lecture yesterday at Bodhi Prem Yoga about getting sick. Part of the lecture mentioned tonsil swelling and inflammation. After the infection is over, you can wait for the lymphnodes in the neck and tonsils in the throat to shrink or you can be proactive. Why speed up healing? Big tonsils hurt! Big tonsils also interfere with voice breathing and sleep. The same premise for decreasing inflammation of lymph nodes and tonsils can be applied to muscle and joint pain (like training for a hike in the Grand Canyon or your everyday arthritis sufferer. My training in sportsmedicine imparted knowledge on how to use antiinflammatory medicines to maximize healing and minimize side effects. Modalities are therapeutic agents or techniques to facilitate healing. I feel most MD's undervalue their use. When I worked with the athletes from Cirque Du Solei La Nouba, most where well versed with exercises and therapy to take care of strains and sprains (the ranks backstage where chock full of ex-Olympians mostly gymnastics) but they would always know to ask for ultrasound or TENS. Emery the physical therapist at First Health Associates gets my injured patients reversed fast but ......what if I could send him home with every patient to continue with daily manual therapy and massage!!! That wont happend but a home TENS unit is the next best thing and most insurance pays for it! As mentioned to several lecture audience groups (Hike for Health and Meditation for Stress) meditation can be done while walking. I learned this technique from the Benson Henry Institute and applied it to the last 13 miles from my 10/10/10 Chicago Marathon run. Injured, I contemplated dropping out but just decided to walk it and enjoyed the event more than previous attempts. The idea is to match thumb to finger tapping with breath. During inhale-thumb touches the index finger then the middle, during exhale thumb touches ring finger then pinky and repeat. (Please refer to the slideshare.net presentations of DrRic.)

Probiotics are great. Studies will show this suppllement helps maintain "Normal Flora" in your digestive tract. You need normal flora for proper digestion. Antibiotics kill bad bacteria but they also wipe out your stock pile of good bacteria. I always give suggestions for starting a probiotic the same day I prescribe an antibiotic. Usually I say just finish off the bottle from your healthfood store refrigerated section (and most bottles are for 30days). For avoiding diarrhea from antibiotics-look for Lactobacillus GG, Lacto rueteri, Lacto sporogenes and Saccharomyces Boulardi. If there are more bacteria than the 4 listed-ok! For just maintaining good flora (like in IBD (D), Crohns disease or Ulcerative colitis-look for Lacto rhamnosus, Lacto rueteri, Bifidobacter and Saccharomyes B. You can ask your doc to write a prescription for VSL#3 (a prescription strength probiotic you take in powder form) and if covered, great.....although this probiotic has 300billion bacteria vs standard probiotics with 4 billion vs yogurt with 70thousand.
