What Does Depersonalisation FEEL LIKE?

08:23
This week, we look at what Depersonalisation feels like - from my point of view. Depersonalisation affects us all in different ways - do you have the same symptoms as me, or different ones? Do you have any analogies that you use to explain your problems to people who don't suffer from DP in a way that they can relate to? Comment below with your experiences...the more we share with each other, the more we will learn :-) What would you like to see discussed on this channel? What questions do you have about DP? How can I make this channel better? Help to drive the content - get in touch and send me your questions, opinions, ideas etc. I want to tailor this channel to you. :-) Email: joe@dpddiaries.co.uk Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dpddiaries/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/dpddiaries ...or just comment under this video! If you'd like to receive a newsletter about DPD matters - including details of peer support and the forthcoming DPD charity, please drop my friend Jane Charlton an email at dprdaware@gmail.com. She's hugely knowledgable about DPD (far more so than I!) and does great work in campaigning to raise awareness of the condition. **Disclaimer** I am not a trained professional in any way. This channel is comprised largely of my own personal opinions & experiences as a DPD sufferer. I do lots of research about DPD and have spoken to many professionals - I endeavour to include their knowledge within my videos, but it's inevitable that at some point I may get medical facts slightly wrong. Please don't use the content of this channel for your own self-diagnosis...use it to learn about Depersonalisation, engage in discussion with others and - if appropriate - assist you in gathering information to then discuss with your doctor or mental health professional.

How Does Depersonalisation Disorder Affect RELATIONSHIPS?

07:07
DPD affects all aspects of our life - but how does it impact our romantic relationships? (This video is also for people who don't have DP themselves but are in relationships with DP sufferers) The ways in which DPD affects us vary between individuals, but none of those ways make relationships easier to maintain. So how can we help to keep relationships going despite the struggles? What would you like to see discussed on this channel? What questions do you have about DP? How can I make this channel better? The DIFFERENCE Between DEPERSONALISATION & DEREALISATION (DP & DR)

05:10
This is the first of a few episodes discussing the very basics of Depersonalisation as a symptom & as a sensation. These first videos will hopefully help you to identify whether you are suffering with symptoms of unreality. In this episode, we look at an important distinction in these feelings of disassociation - the difference between Depersonalisation (DP) and Derealisation (DR). We also look at a few of the other abbreviations that you may have come across when reading about these type of feelings. What would you like to see discussed on this channel? "INFJ": The Depersonalisation Personality Type...?

07:26
Thank you to everybody who took the Myers-Briggs personality test a few weeks ago! It was very interesting reading your responses & comparing them to what I've read elsewhere. So - are you an INFJ? I'm guessing there's a very high chance that you might be? What might this be able to tell us about the sort of people who could be predisposed to developing DPD? What Other TESTS, THERAPIES & ASSESSMENTS Have I Had?

07:18
Getting a formal diagnosis for DP can be really tricky and many of us find ourselves going down many different routes trying to identify what is causing our symptoms. I've had DP for 10 years now - and along the way, I've had many tests for various things. Many of you have been in touch to ask me about specific tests, assessments & treatments - so I thought it'd be a good idea to talk about all the investigations I've had in the last decade. Please do comment under this video if you've had tests/assessments that I haven't mentioned here - and let me know if they've shown up anything significant or benefited you in any way. Common MEDICATIONS for Depersonalisation Disorder: SSRI + LAMOTRIGINE

07:00
This week, we'll be looking at a common starting point for medicating against Depersonalisation Disorder: the combination of an SSRI antidepressant and Lamotrigine. This is by no means an 'official' medication for DPD and there is no "one-pill-cures-all" approach to treating it. But, this combination is often the most common starting point when using medication to treat DPD, as it's the medication that has shown the most promise in all the drug trials. It's also the combination that I am taking - and have recently reached the target 'treatment' dose of both medications. Quite a few of you have asked me how I've been getting on with it & whether I've had any side effects - so I'll discuss that in this video too. What would you like to see discussed on this channel? What questions do you have about DP? How can I make this channel better? Coping With WORK & STUDY - And SHOULD You Tell Your Manager/Teacher About Your DP?

06:50
How do you cope with work/study when you're struggling with DP? And should you speak to your manager/teacher about your struggles? In this week's episode, we look at the difficulties in tacking the ways that DP can affect us whilst trying to study or be productive in your job. DP can be absolutely debilitating and can majorly affect our performance & productivity...so what can we do to make things as easy as we possibly can? DRIVING (Or Not Driving) With Depersonalisation Disorder

04:41
This is something I've been thinking a lot about recently. In the last 10 years I've spoken to literally hundreds of medical professionals about how I 'feel drunk all the time' and like I'm 'not in control of my own body'. And yet, nobody has ever questioned my ability to drive. In this episode, I'll be talking about this and how I've had to separate what I feel is true from what I know to be true - and how this has helped to reassure me that I'm a very safe driver. Do you drive with DP? Have you stopped driving because of it? Did you have to pass your test whilst struggling with it? Is this an oversight by medical organisations? Please comment below - let's have a discussion about this, because I really do think it's important. What would you like to see discussed on this channel? What questions do you have about DP? How can I make this channel better? Help to drive the content - get in touch and send me your questions, opinions, ideas etc. I want to tailor this channel to you. :-) Email: joe@dpddiaries.co.uk Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dpddiaries/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/dpddiaries ...or just comment under this video! How Do We Stop THINKING & WORRYING About Our Depersonalisation?

07:33
Living life with DP can be incredibly difficult. Just getting out of bed in the morning can be a significant challenge some days. So how do we cope with our symptoms & keep on keeping on? How do we avoid overthinking our condition & making it worse? In this video, I discuss some of the coping mechanisms (by that I mean positive coping mechanisms - not negative, damaging, self-destructive ones) that I use to keep pushing forwards in life despite my DP. Do you have any tips to share? Things that work for you that I haven't talked about here? Please share them below - we can all learn from each other! Maudsley Update 23 March '18: ASSESSMENT & MEDICATION

03:19
A lot of you have been asking me recently about what's going on with my referral to the Maudsley hospital. This is a brief update about where I'm at with my treatment and what's going to be happening in the near future. This is the study done into the combination of SSRIs and Lamotrigine in the treatment of DP - it's a very interesting read: https://genderanalysis.net/depersonalization/lamotrigine-in-combination-treatment-for-depersonalization-disorder/ It's very important to stress again though - the treatment that I'm going to be given is 100% bespoke to my individual case. There is no 'official' treatment for DP and in places such as the Maudsley, the treatment plan is totally designed around the individual. You guys would likely be given very different treatment to me if you were to go through the same system - so please don't take this information as being 'THE' treatment for DP. Sadly, DP is much more complicated than that. What would you like to see discussed on this channel? What questions do you have about DP? How can I make this channel better? A video diary of my journey to the Maudsley Hospital in London - and details of three small things I learnt during my assessment. Is It NORMAL To Experience DEPERSONALISATION?

06:07
Is Depersonalisation a normal thing to feel from time to time, or is it always a problematic sensation to experience? This involves looking at DP in terms of basic psychology - and to help me do that, I'm referencing two important sources written by experts: Overcoming Depersonalisation And Feelings Of Unreality (a CBT-based self help book written by the team at the Maudsley Hospital in London) and an article on Psychology Today by Dr Elena Bezzubova (a Russian psychoanalyst working in California, who treats DP). You can buy the book here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Overcoming-Depersonalisation-Feelings-Unreality-behavioural/dp/1845295544 Dr Bezzubova's Psychology Today Article: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-search-self/201602/the-airbag-depersonalization-shield-or-disorder What would you like to see discussed on this channel? Why Is Depersonalisation Disorder So UNKNOWN And So Frequently MISDIAGNOSED?

05:08
One of the biggest battles we face with DPD is how unknown the condition is - and we face years (sometimes decades) of misdiagnosis. But why is this? Depersonalisation & TRAVEL (Joe's Been To Italy...)

08:23
A slightly different video for you this week - one that puts the 'diary' into DPD Diaries. I won't make this sort of video too often, but I've wanted to talk about DP and travel for a while now so this seemed like a good opportunity to do it. I've just got home from travelling around Italy. I love travelling, but it's definitely one of the times when I struggle the most with my DP. The stress & exhaustion of travel add on top of my DP symptoms, but also there's a huge amount of frustration at not being able to experience & appreciate the amazing things I've spent money to go and see. Is this the same for you? Or do you find travel helps your DP? Does being away from home help to distract you from your symptoms? Please comment below and let me know :-) What would you like to see discussed on this channel? What questions do you have about DP? How can I make this channel better? Maudsley Referral Pt. 2 - EIGHT PERSONAL TIPS For Giving Yourself The Best Chance

10:18
In this episode, I'm offering you eight tips (from my own personal experience of getting referred) on how to give yourself the best chance possible of getting to the Maudsley Hospital. As I say at the start of the video, this is all on the assumption that you are indeed suffering from chronic DP; that you've been assessed locally & there are no treatment options for you in the local area; and professionals agree that the Maudsley is the correct place to send you. This is not a video on how to cheat the system, bypass having assessments locally, etc. 1. Do Your Research (0:54) 2. Provide Medical Professionals With Paperwork (1:13) 3. Referrals From Psychiatrists Have Greater Success With CCGs Than Referrals From GPs (2:52) 4. Be Your Own Secretary (3:25) 5. Be Able To Demonstrate Necessity (4:53) 6. Patient Statement (6:11) 7. The Is Little Substitute For Finding A Professional Who Understands DP (7:39) 8. Be Patient (8:34) Do you have any things that have worked for you - both for dealing with mental health professionals and/or getting referred to the Maudsley - that I didn't cover in this video? Share them below :-) This is Howard Swains' fantastic article on Depersonalisation Disorder from The Guardian (this is hugely important, brilliantly written & has been instrumental in getting me to the hospital): https://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/sep/04/depersonalisation-disorder-the-condition-youve-never-heard-of-that-affects-millions What would you like to see discussed on this channel? Maudsley Referral Pt. 1 - WHY Does It Take SO LONG?

05:14
The most common questions I've had since starting this channel have been about the reasons why it's so difficult & takes so long to get referred to the Maudsley Hospital in London for treatment. In this video, we'll look at the way the NHS is structured, who pays when you're referred to the Maudsley and how out-of-area referrals differ from local referrals. You can read more about what CCGs are and what they do on the NHS website here: https://www.nhscc.org/ccgs/ This report contains details of the Royal College of Psychiatrists' investigation into the cost difference between local & out-of-area referrals: https://www.gponline.com/cutting-mental-health-out-of-area-treatments-save-ccg-funds/article/1165430 What would you like to see discussed on this channel? It's taken a while to work out how best to put it together, but I think I've finally decided on a format - and I've now started filming it. This video will quickly bring you up to speed.

Keeping Upbeat - And A Positive Mental Attitude

I know I seem upbeat on camera when doing these videos...but am I this positive & cheery all the time? Of course not. But please don't let the positivity of this channel ever make you feel bad about how much you might struggle with DPD. We all struggle - and I know how bad it can get. So feed off the positivity; but don't believe everything you see on camera! What would you like to see discussed on this channel? What questions do you have about DP? Talking Depersonalisation With Jane Charlton: Part II

12:30
Welcome to Part II of my chat with fellow DPD sufferer and awareness campaigner Jane Charlton. In this episode, we talk much more about the campaigning Jane has been doing for the last few years; the Depersonalisation charity she's in the process of setting up; the DPD mailing list that she runs; a very notable forthcoming online article; and many more things besides! Here are some useful links to all the campaigning in the media discussed in this video: Guardian Article: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/sep/04/depersonalisation-disorder-the-condition-youve-never-heard-of-that-affects-millions Victoria Derbyshire Show (Part I): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VDpeSPjeZI Sarah Lawrie talking on the Jeremy Vine show: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05pl32v British Medical Journal: https://www.bmj.com/content/356/bmj.j745/rr A video directly from the Maudsley Hospital about the service: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7Dr8jt_Ixg What would you like to see discussed on this channel? Stigmas, Prejudices & Nastiness Surrounding MENTAL HEALTH

05:41
I was recently asked whether I have ever received any nastiness or prejudice from being open about mental health struggles. Sadly, like many other people, I have. Nothing absolutely horrific, but nevertheless, hurtful. Just to clarify the content of this video: I am absolutely not saying that you shouldn't stand up for yourself if somebody is being nasty to you. However, changing the stigma around mental health is much more of a societal issue rather than tackling a single unpleasant individual. The internet especially is full of so-called 'keyboard warriors' or 'trolls' who deliberately make hurtful comments to provoke a reaction. In these instances, I would urge you not to rise to their bait - that's exactly what they're wanting you to do. It's ultimately unlikely to achieve anything, so arguing with them is not something that'll make them change their mind over the issue or stop with the hurtful comments. So, don't give them the satisfaction of knowing they've hurt you with their deliberately unpleasant words. What would you like to see discussed on this channel? What questions do you have about DP? How can I make this channel better? How Did It FEEL To Be Diagnosed With Depersonalisation Disorder?

06:01
This video is for anybody who believes they might be struggling with Depersonalisation (either as a symptom or a disorder) and are feeling anxious about getting a diagnosis. What will it mean for your job? Or your personal life? Is it the right thing to do to try and get diagnosed? In this episode, I talk about my personal experiences of getting diagnosed with DPD - and how it has (or hasn't) affected my life. Here is the link to the newspaper article that helped me (& so many other people) so much: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/sep/04/depersonalisation-disorder-the-condition-youve-never-heard-of-that-affects-millions What would you like to see discussed on this channel? The 'Send To Friends' Video

Watch 'UNREAL: Life With Depersonalisation Disorder' here: https://youtu.be/Lx3iPmDVEms That video is for you to send to your friends & family to hopefully give them a better understanding of what life with Depersonalisation Disorder is like for you. I tried to make it in a way that's engaging for your 'average' viewer rather than just us DPD sufferers, using as many spoken & visual metaphors as I could to portray the sensation in the most accurate way I could. Can We Find ANY Silver Linings In A Life With Depersonalisation Disorder...?

07:58
Let's look at DPD from a very different angle today - almost everything about suffering from DPD is incredibly damaging & upsetting (and this video is in no way trying to negate that) But can DPD help us with anything? Life with Depersonalisation can be - and indeed is - a nightmare. The lack of feelings & emotions can leave us feeling totally demotivated and struggling to find direction. Can Depersonalisation Disorder Be Diagnosed With QUESTIONNAIRES & STATISTICS?

06:18
Many of you have asked me about how to get a formal diagnosis of Depersonalisation Disorder. In this episode, we'll be looking at which paperwork might be able to contribute to that process - and which might be somewhat misleading. This is the link to the Cambridge Depersonalisation Scale test (it automatically downloads a text document - but don't worry, it's perfectly safe!) http://www.goodmedicine.org.uk/files/assessment,%20depersonalization,%20t.DOC What would you like to see discussed on this channel? Coming Soon: SEND TO FRIENDS VIDEO (Please Send Me Your Ideas!)

01:15
I've had an idea to make a video about Depersonalisation aimed at non-sufferers - that we can all use to send to our friends & family. I want to try to explain DP in a very simple way that (hopefully) a lot of people will be able to understand. Do you think this is a good idea? What things do I need to include? What do you wish you could explain to your loved ones that you don't feel able to? I'd love to hear your ideas before I make the video - so that I can do the best job possible for you guys. Is It 'RIGHT' To Experience Depersonalisation Disorder?

04:21
I read a Tweet the other day which presented an angle on DPD that I'd never really considered before: whilst DP as a symptom makes a lot of sense in terms of our fight/flight response, does suffering from it chronically, 24/7 make biological sense also? I'd only ever considered it to be 100% wrong as a response - but is it?? What would you like to see discussed on this channel? What questions do you have about DP? How can I make this channel better?
