Why Does Mexico Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day In A Big Way?

00:56
In the U.S., St. Patrick’s Day is usually celebrated with lots of parades and even more beer. Mexico shows its Irish pride in a different way. The day is celebrated as a sort-of military holiday, in honor of El Batallón de los San Patricios. Saint Patrick’s Battalion was a group of European immigrants and expatriates, overwhelmingly Irish, who had defected from the United States army to fight alongside Mexico during the U.S.-Mexico War of 1846-48. Their reason for deserting is largely attributed to religion. The U.S. and its army, was majority Protestant, and the Catholic servicemen felt marginalized and reminded of their experience under Protestant British rule in Ireland, so they fled to the Catholic confines of Mexico. http://fusion.net/story/282037/st-patricks-battalion-mexico-ireland/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Most babies usually wait until they are at least one year old before they utter their first word. So a mother from Northern Ireland remained speechless recently, when her seven-WEEK-old son did this: ][ The surprised mom, Toni McCann, said she sensed her son Cillian was trying to mimic her before ultimately uttering "Hello". "If I hadn't videoed it, I’m sure people wouldn't have believed me", she told the Daily Mail, adding that she probably wouldn't have believed it herself. null http://www.wochit.com

Researchers Hopeful New Treatment Leads To HIV Cure

01:13
A new treatment resulting from the partnership between Britain's National Institute for Health Research and other leading medical research organizations has scientists hopeful that they may have found a way to eradicate the HIV virus completely. The Collaborative entity known as HIV Eradication of Viral Reservoirs is comprised of clinicians, virologists, and immunologists, who have treated the first patient in an upcoming study that will involve 50 participants. Whereas previous HIV treatments use Antiretroviral Therapy - or ART - to stop the virus from copying itself and spreading - which often results with the virus' return when treatment ends, this new approach hopes to activate "sleeping" HIV cells and encourage a patient's own immune system to fight HIV. According to professor Sarah Fidler "This first participant has now completed the intervention and we have found it to be safe and well tolerated." But Fidler adds that "Only when all 50 study participants have completed the whole study, by 2018, will we be able to tell if there has been an effect on curing HIV." http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/10/03/Scientists-hope-for-HIV-cure-with-new-treatment/9551475522018/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Japan Building "Great Wall" Against Tsunamis

01:08
Four years after the tsunami ravaged much of its northeastern coast and killed over eighteen-thousand people, Japan is constructing a nearly 250-mile chain of cement seawalls to fend off future towering waves. Opponents of the 6.8 billion dollar wall, which in some places will reach nearly five stories high, say that the massive concrete barrier will damage marine ecology and scenery and hinder vital fisheries. Moreover, it will do only little to protect residents, and even worse - it'll foster complacency. Instead, they call for people to either move to higher ground, or to create a "green wall" of trees that perhaps won't stop the floods, but will weaken the impact of the waves. However those in favor of the "great wall", say it's a necessary evil, and one that will provide some jobs, at least for a time. http://bigstory.ap.org/article/35d608bb1ebe4766b33146e39b6044ba/japan-opts-massive-costly-sea-wall-fend-tsunamis http://www.wochit.com

Despite Opposition, Elvis Presley's Private Planes Will Remain at Graceland

01:01
The Associated Press reports that Elvis Presley's custom-designed airplanes – the Lisa Marie and the Hound Dog II – will remain permanent fixtures at Graceland. The late singer's Memphis estate issued a statement on Sunday confirming the plans – a change from previous arrangements to relocate Presley's tricked-out private jets to a nearby lot. The Lisa Marie, a Convair 880 named after the rock legend's daughter, features a red-white-and-blue exterior, gold-plated bathroom fixtures, a stereo system, a conference room and bed. According to a Julien's auction listing from January, Presley bought the jet from Delta Air Lines for $250,000 in April 1975; refurbishing brought the total to over $600,000, and he first boarded the craft in November of that year. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/despite-opposition-elvis-presleys-private-planes-will-remain-at-graceland-20150427 http://www.wochit.com

The country's U.N. mission said Two United Nations peacekeepers from Tanzania were killed in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday when their patrol was ambushed in an area where government forces are fighting Ugandan rebels. Felix Basse, spokesman for the mission known as MONUSCO, told Reuters the peacekeepers were attacked in the village of Kikiki, around 30 miles north of the town of Beni in North Kivu province. He said, "The ambush took place today, this afternoon ... The death toll is two and we have a couple of injured." The Congolese army said earlier on Tuesday that it had killed 16 Ugandan Allied Democratic Forces rebels during fierce fighting in the same zone over the weekend. Actress Olivia De Havilland Talks Sibling feud

01:17
Legendary actress Olivia de Haviliand is celebrating her 100th birthday today. In a rare interview, De Havilland is finally breaking her silence on Hollywood's most famous sibling rivalry. De Haviliand is a two-time Oscar winner and last living remnant of Hollywood's Golden Age. In the interview she finally talked about her true feelings about her late sister Joan Fontaine, revealing that she calls her "Dragon Lady." De Havilland said the "legend of a feud" with her sister was first created by an article entitled "Sister Act" in Life Magazine . The article followed the 1942 Oscars, where both sisters were nominated for an Academy Award. Joan Fontaine, at that time, was the lesser known sister. She won for the movie "Suspicion". De Havilland, meanwhile, had been nominated for "Hold Back the Dawn." De Haviliand said "A feud implies continuing hostile conduct between two parties. I cannot think of a single instance wherein I initiated hostile behavior. But I can think of many occasions where my reaction to deliberately inconsiderate behavior was defensive." http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/4e67281c3f754d0696fbfdee0f3f1469/Article_2016-07-01-EU--France-Olivia%20de%20Havilland/id-68ac2116a18f4c48b0953182c030edb1 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Yoshinori Ohsumi Wins Nobel Prize In Medicine For His Work On Autophagy

01:07
Yoshinori Ohsumi is a biologist at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and this year’s winner for the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. Ohsumi has received the prize for his work on autophagy, a method for breaking down and recycling large pieces of cellular junk, such as clusters of damaged proteins or worn-out organelles. To keep recycling machinery in good condition is crucial for the cells' health. Not enough recycling can cause cellular trash to build up and lead to neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and too much recycling has been linked to cancer. According to biologist Maria Masucci of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, Ohsumi‘s discoveries helped reveal the mechanism and significance of a fundamental physiological process. She said, “There is growing hope that this knowledge will lead to the development of new strategies for the treatment of many human diseases.” https://www.sciencenews.org/article/deciphering-cell%E2%80%99s-recycling-machinery-earns-nobel http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Joe Biden Attends Son Beau Biden's Emotional Funeral

Beau Biden's viewing service was emotional to say the least. Vice President Joe Biden, whose son tragically passed away from brain cancer five days ago at the young age of 46, was surrounded by friends and family Thursday at Beau's public service and viewing at Legislative Hall in Dover, Delaware. Biden, his wife Jill Biden, Beau's wife and kids and the rest of their family were understandably emotional while watching honor guards carry Beau's casket, which was draped with an American flag. The famous family shed tears as they said goodbye to the former Attorney General, who had been battling brain cancer for several years. In addition to the service and viewing, Beau was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross, Delaware's highest honor, for his "heroism, meritorious service and outstanding achievement." http://www.eonline.com/news/663433/vice-president-joe-biden-attends-son-beau-biden-s-emotional-funeral-surrounded-by-family?cmpid=rss-000000-rssfeed-365-topstories&utm_source=eonline&utm_medium=rssfeeds&utm_campaign=rss_topstories http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

Why the U.S. Military Pushed Helicopters Overboard in the Vietnam War

01:13
In the final year of the Vietnam War, a series of offensives by the North Vietnamese led to the fall of the South Vietnamese capital Saigon on April 30, 1975. As the North Vietnamese Viet Cong approached Saigon, South Vietnamese citizens and American personnel fled before them, and the U.S. government began a program of mass evacuations. People were helicoptered away, sometimes under fire, to waiting American warships. The final phase of the evacuation was code-named Operation Frequent Wind. This included a map of Saigon showing areas where they would be picked up when the signal was given. Frequent Wind was carried out on April 29 and 30. Such was the speed of the evacuation and the number of people involved that the ships became overwhelmed with people and the helicopters that had brought them. Orders were given to push surplus helicopters over the sides of the ships to make room for more. Some pilots were told to drop off their passengers, then ditch their machines in the sea, bailing out at the last moment to be picked up by waiting rescue boats. Over 7,000 people were evacuated in Operation Frequent Wind. http://feeds.mashable.com/~r/Mashable/~3/dPc28CAsJQE/ http://www.wochit.com

Scientists Identify Treatment of Glioblastoma Brain Tumor

00:54
Researchers say they have identified a protein -- tyrosine phosphatase receptor type Z, or PTPRZ, -- as a drug target for patients with glioblastoma. Glioblastoma has been classified by the World Health Organization as the highest grade glioma, a type of brain tumor that is difficult to treat with the median survival rate of patients with glioblastoma is 14 months. There has been a lack of effective treatment options has spurred researchers to look for other treatment options. The study also showed that the allosteric inhibitor of PTPRZ known as NAZ2329 suppressed stem cell-like properties in glioblastoma cells in cultures and tumor growth. https://www.upi.com/Health_News/2017/07/18/Scientists-identify-drug-target-for-treatment-of-glioblastoma/6421500394895/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Harvard Paper Suggests Cigar-Shaped Interstellar Object Is Alien Probe

(CNN)A mysterious cigar-shaped object spotted tumbling through our solar system last year may have been an alien spacecraft sent to investigate Earth, astronomers from Harvard University have suggested. The object, nicknamed 'Oumuamua, meaning "a messenger that reaches out from the distant past" in Hawaiian, was first discovered in October 2017 by the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope in Hawaii. Since its discovery, scientists have been at odds to explain its unusual features and precise origins, with researchers first calling it a comet and then an asteroid, before finally deeming it the first of its kind: a new class of "interstellar objects." https://www.cnn.com/2018/11/06/health/oumuamua-alien-probe-harvard-intl/index.html http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Mexico's President In Another Corruption Scandal

01:17
Once again, Enrique Peña Nieto and his family appear to be benefiting from his position as president of Mexico. José Luis Montenegro and Julio Roa are reporters at The Guardian. According to Fusion, they recently revealed that Mexican businessman Ricardo Pierdant, who has operations in both the U.S. and Mexico, appears to have paid taxes for Peña Nieto’s family and allowed them to use his luxury apartment in Key Biscayne, Florida. The journalists reported that Pierdant also used a holding company to pay $29,703 in property taxes for the President's wife Angelica Rivera's apartment in 2013. Stranger still, the apartments are connected by a private elevator and share the same telephone number. One has to wonder: What did Pierdant expect in return for lending out his million-dollar property and paying Rivera’s taxes? That's unknown at this time, but the journalists have explained that Pierdant’s company, Grupo Pierdant, is expected to bid for a lucrative government contract to manage seaports in Mexico. http://fusion.net/story/337255/jorge-ramos-another-scandal-pena-nieto/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

California Drought Plagues Entire West Coast

01:20
With more than two-thirds of Washington state experiencing abnormal dry conditions and more than half of the state experiencing moderate drought, Governor Jay Inslee on Friday declared a statewide drought emergency. According to the Washington state department of agriculture, about $1.2bn of crops could be lost as a result of the drought this year. At the beginning of the month, the Natural Resources Conservation Service found that of 98 snow sites measured in Washington, 66 were snow-free, 11 for the first time ever. According to Inslee’s office, snowpack in Washington’s mountains has dropped to just 16% of normal levels. In California, snow on the mountains has fallen to 12% of average levels, from 28% last year. As a result, the state’s department of natural resources expects more early-season and higher-elevation wildfires. The droughts in California and Washington are only the beginning, a study written by the scientists at the Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory predicts that the US south-west and the Great Plains will face decade-long droughts far worse than any experienced over the last 1,000 years, because of climate change. http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/may/16/washington-state-drought-emergency http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

Most people get a gold watch when they retire, but James Harrison deserves so much more. Harrison, known as the "Man With the Golden Arm," has donated blood every week for 60 years. After 1,100 donations, the 81-year-old Australian man "retired" Friday. According to the Australian Red Cross, he has helped save the lives of more than 2.4 million Australian babies. Harrison's blood has unique, disease-fighting antibodies needed to develop the medication Anti-D, which helps fight against rhesus disease. The condition occurs when a pregnant woman's blood starts attacking her unborn baby's blood cells. In the worst cases, it can result in death, for the baby. The Australian Red Cross, said: "Every batch of Anti-D that has ever been made in Australia has come from James' blood." Now that Harrison has given his last blood donation the Blood Service hopes people with similar antibodies in their blood will step up and donate. https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/11/health/james-harrison-blood-donor-retires-trnd/index.html http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

India will push ahead this week with plans to build a port in southeast Iran, two sources said, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi keen to develop trade ties with Central Asia and prepared to fend off U.S. pressure not to rush into any deals with Iran. India and Iran agreed in 2003 to develop a port at Chabahar on the Gulf of Oman, near Iran's border with Pakistan, but the venture has made little progress because of Western sanctions on Iran. Dazzling Supertide Transforms France's Mont Saint-Michel Into an Island, Delighting Thousands

01:01
A supertide has turned France’s famed Mont Saint-Michel into an island and then retreated out of sight, delighting thousands of visitors who came to see the rare phenomenon. The so-called “tide of the century” actually happens every 18 years. Although the tide rushes in and out along the whole northern French coast, it's especially dramatic at the UNESCO world heritage site, which is normally linked to the mainland only by a narrow causeway at high tide. The high tide, said to rise at the pace of a horse's gallop, turned the Mont briefly into an island Saturday, while the day's low tide allowed people to walk on the expansive flat seabed. Tidal specialist Nicolas Pouvreau told France 24 the surge was a few inches short of expectations. http://feeds.foxnews.com/~r/foxnews/world/~3/gP2Ubk0HhSE/ http://www.wochit.com

People are Drowning Tortoises After Confusing Them With Sea Turtles

00:56
A new bulletin from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is reminding tourists and Floridians that all turtles are not equal. The commission received three reports in March from "helpful" samaritans that accidentally mistook a gopher tortoise for a sea turtle, releasing them into the ocean where they are less likely to end up as dinner for the many dangers that lurk on the beaches. Unfortunately, gopher tortoises can't swim. The land-dwelling tortoises often nest in beach dunes that are adjacent to the beaches where sea turtles nest, which can lead to the confusion. The two shelled creatures can be distinguished by their limbs. Gopher tortoises have toes with a claw on each toe, and sea turtles have flippers, for swimming. http://feeds.mashable.com/~r/Mashable/~3/tH7-WESCQqM/ http://www.wochit.com

Scientists at the University of Wisconsin successfully grew a vocal cord using cadaver tissue. Scientists have made promising breakthroughs in the world of bioengineering, successfully growing human kidneys, a mini-brain, and a limb. On Wednesday, a new body part worthy of talk was unveiled: vocal chords. The paper, published in Science Translational Medicine, shows how University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers bioengineered vocal chord tissue from a cadaver. The tissue, which closely resembles real vocal chord tissue, is even capable of transmitting sound. Dr. Nathan Welham, an associate professor of surgery at UW and a speech pathologist, touched on the significance of the discovery. http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/thedailybeast/articles/~3/OuGg07BtxPo/scientists-grew-a-vocal-cord.html http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Implanted Defibrillators Can Deliver Inappropriate Shocks, Driving Up Huge Bills

01:09
Implanted defibrillators can deliver a potentially lifesaving shock to a heart that's beating erratically. However, a new study shows that patients often wind up in the emergency room or the hospital needing medical procedures afterwards. According to UPI, that was the case whether the shock was needed or not--and in 38 percent of cases, the researchers added--it wasn't. Inappropriate shocks occur when the device mistakes an irregular heartbeat for ventricular arrhythmia, a condition that can cause the patient to die from cardiac arrest if not corrected. Cardiac arrest is when the heart suddenly stops beating. Aside from pain, anxiety and discomfort for the patient, there is the issue of money. The researchers found the average cost of health care following a shock was nearly $5,600 for an appropriate shock--and nearly $4,500 for an inappropriate shock. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2017/02/15/Shocks-from-implanted-defibrillators-trigger-health-costs-of-their-own/4231487189250/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Woman With ALS Holds Goodbye Party Before Ending Own Life

01:10
In early July, Betsy Davis emailed her closest friends and relatives to invite them to a two-day party, telling them: "These circumstances are unlike any party you have attended before, requiring emotional stamina, centeredness and openness." And just one rule: No crying in front of her. The 41-year-old artist had ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. According to the Associated Press, Davis held the gathering to say goodbye before becoming one of the first Californians to take a lethal dose of drugs under the state's new doctor-assisted suicide law for the terminally ill. Davis spent months planning her exit, feeling empowered after spending the last three years losing control of her body bit by bit. The painter and performance artist could no longer stand, brush her teeth or scratch an itch. Her caretakers had to translate her slurred speech for others. Wearing a Japanese kimono she bought on a bucket-list trip she took after being diagnosed in 2013, she looked out at her last sunset and took the drugs at 6:45 p.m. with her caretaker, her doctor, her massage therapist and her sister by her side. Four hours later, she died. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/386c25518f464186bf7a2ac026580ce7/Article_2016-08-11-US--Woman's%20Final%20Party/id-21d9da4fc7f440b2ab9c01f3eb8c68a4 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

The Less Obvious, Early Symptoms Of Parkinson's Disease

01:08
When you think of Parkinson’s disease, you probably picture tremors and Michael J. Fox, but a more telling early indicator is handwriting that suddenly gets much smaller. According to Reader's Digest, a 2013 Israeli study found handwriting analysis was able to identify patients in the early stages of Parkinson’s more than 97 per cent of the time. Other early indications of the condition can include a loss of smell. If you stop noticing pungent cologne and aren’t drawn to the aroma of mouth-watering food, pay attention. Intense dreams that cause you to thrash and kick in your bed can also be an indicator. When any of these symptoms last more than a couple of weeks, see a neurologist. The earlier the disease is diagnosed, and the sooner you get control of the symptoms, the better your quality of life will be. http://www.readersdigest.ca/health/conditions/10-red-flag-symptoms/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

NBC Hit With Criticism After Ignoring Olympic Swimmer's Partner

00:41
On Tuesday NBC received even more flack regarding their coverage of the Rio Olympics after commentators failed to mention or acknowledge the relationship between British diver Tom Daley and Oscar winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black even after cameras lingered on Black's crew for some time. Viewers went off on Twitter asking NBC why their commentators "can't get anything right?" NBC responded saying, "“With more than 11,000 athletes at the Games, it isn’t always possible to identify every competitor’s significant other, regardless of their sexual orientation.” http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/thr/television/~3/LssMntHeWmg/rio-olympics-nbc-slammed-twitter-918611 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Scientists Use Stem Cell Therapy To Treat Leading Cause Of Blindness

00:51
2 (UPI) -- Researchers made advances toward creating stem cell-derived retinal cells used to treat a leading cause of blindness, scientists at the National Eye Institute said. NEI scientists found that tiny tube-like protrusions called primary cilia on a layer of cells in the back of the eye, known as the retinal pigment epithelium, are essential for the survival of the retina's light-sensing photoreceptors, according to a new study published in the journal Cell Reports. The discovery has advanced scientists' ability to use induced-pluripotent stem cells to create adult RPE for transplants to treat patients with geographic atrophy -- or dry age-related macular degeneration -- a leading cause of blindness in the United States. https://www.upi.com/Health_News/2018/01/02/Scientists-advance-stem-cell-therapy-for-a-leading-cause-of-blindness/8571514929118/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Pope Makes Surprise Visit to Nuns in Obamacare Lawsuit

00:52
Pope Francis made a surprise stop to see to nuns who are suing the Obama administration for requiring employers to cover the cost of birth control — a visit the convent called a "spiritual shot in the arm" for its lawsuit. The pope made the unscheduled trip to Little Sisters of the Poor in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, during a busy first day of his historic trip to the United States. The nuns, who run homes for senior citizens across the country, have been embroiled in a legal battle over the contraception provision of President Obama's 2010 Affordable Health Care Act, or Obamacare. Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi told reporters that the pope's visit was a "sign of support for" the nuns. http://feeds.nbcnews.com/c/35002/f/663303/s/4a22b289/sc/7/l/0L0Snbcnews0N0Cstoryline0Cpope0Efrancis0Evisits0Eamerica0Cspiritual0Eshot0Earm0Epope0Evisits0Enuns0Eobamacare0Esuit0En432931/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

'Phantom Limb' Pain Can Be Relieved Through Brain Training

01:09
People who undergo an amputation often experience pain and sensation from the limb that's no longer there. It's a phenomenon doctors call "phantom limb pain." But now, researchers say they've figured out a way to rewire the brain and reduce pain coming from a phantom limb. According to a new study, the technique essentially involves distracting the brain from mixed signals it may receive as a result of losing the limb. According to UPI, the research team used a brain-machine interface to decode the neural activity of the mental action needed for a patient to move their "phantom" hand, then linked those signals to a robot prosthetic limb. Patients experienced an increase in phantom pain if they tried to control the prosthetic arm by willing the movement of their missing arm. But patients' phantom pain decreased if they were trained to move the robot arm using the "wrong" side of the brain. For example, researchers said patients missing the left arm experienced reduced pain if they moved the prosthetic arm through neural signals associated with their right arm. Study co-author Ben Seymour says he hopes this research will provide an alternative to painkillers for people experiencing phantom limb pain. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/10/27/Brain-training-may-curb-phantom-limb-pain/4131477600155/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Rare Herd of Bison Found in Utah

00:56
Researchers have confirmed that the Henry Mountains of southern Utah are home to a rare, genetically pure bison herd. The team included Utah State University scientists who analyzed tissue samples from the bison. Dr. Johan du Toit, professor of ecology and large mammal conservation at USU, said that the herd is even more unique than other populations of bison that have not interbred with cattle. He added, "We’ve got a very, very special case in that the Henry Mountains bison is actually in fact the only population of bison in existence which is now both genetically pure and is free of the disease brucellosis and is free-ranging on public land co-mingling with cattle and is legally hunted. So, we have this very unique population which is one of a kind." http://upr.org/post/genetically-pure-bison-found-utah http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Russian Planes Fly Near US Warship

01:11
According to the Pentagon, Russian warplanes have made several close passes in recent days over a US destroyer sailing in the Black Sea. Russian state media reported that the USS Ross was acting "aggressively". The US Department of Defense, however, said the ship was "well within international waters at all times, performing routine operations". The US Navy released video on Monday of a Russian plane passing as close as 500 meters to the USS Ross. Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren said on Monday that the Russian planes were not armed with weapons and the USS Ross maintained its course. The Pentagon added that the ship's deployment to the Black Sea had been publicly announced. The Black Sea encounters are the latest sign of military tension between Russian and the West, amid hostilities in eastern Ukraine. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-32969336#sa-ns_mchannel=rss&ns_source=PublicRSS20-sa http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

Scientists Create Better Way To Study Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria

00:55
For bacteria, practice makes perfect: Adjusting to ever higher levels of antibiotics prepares them to morph into super resistant strains, and scientists can now watch it happen. According to Science News, a new device — a huge petri dish coated with different concentrations of antibiotics — makes this normally hidden process visible. Microbiologist Michael Baym and colleagues report in the Sept. 9th issue of 'Science' that the setup gives a step-by-step picture of how garden-variety microbes become antibiotic-resistant superbugs. Baym and his colleagues think the experimental setup could be used to study microbial evolution under other environmental and spatial constraints, like the availability of particular nutrients. https://www.sciencenews.org/article/scientists-watch-bacteria-evolve-antibiotic-resistance http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

It’s been known for some time that Apple founder Steve Jobs was often a poor father to his eldest child, Lisa Brennan-Jobs. Business Insider reports that, in her new autobiography, Lisa Brennan-Jobs further details her fraught relationship with her father and stepmother, Laurene Powell-Jobs. Lisa details in her biography that once at a family therapy session with her father and stepmother, she told the therapist she felt lonely and wanted her parents to tell her goodnight each evening. Powell-Jobs response was “we’re just cold people.” Powell-Jobs issued a joint statement with her children and Job’s sister Mona Simpson to the times. They said, "Lisa is part of our family, so it was with sadness that we read her book, which differs dramatically from our memories of those times. https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-steve-jobs-laurene-powell-jobs-lisa-brennan-jobs-biography-2018-8 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Here are five facts about the little-known Pangolin: 1. Pangolin’s scales are made of keratin, which is the same material found in a rhino's horn. A pangolin's tongue can be longer than its body. Pangolins don't have very good eyesight. Pangolins can live in trees or in the ground. Some species climb trees by using their claws to grip on to overhanging branches, while others use their claws to dig holes in the ground. Four of the species are found in Asia and the four others are found in Africa. http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/37470783' http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Prince Andrew Says His Daughters Should No Longer be Excluded From Royal Duties

Prince Andrew has lost his battle to retain his royal status. So why is he opening up a new front in his war with Prince Charles, using his kids Beatrice and Eugenie as the pawns? Prince Charles and his younger brother Prince Andrew have never got on very well. As children, the two were distant primarily due to their age differences (Andrew is 11 years Charles’s junior, and Charles was at boarding school from the age of 8) but as the years have gone on, that separation has been replaced by a jealousy on Andrew’s part. http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/thedailybeast/articles/~3/CAPNF9NIdyE/inside-the-royal-war-between-prince-charles-and-prince-andrew.html http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Israel Says Security Ties With India Out of the Closet

The Israeli defense minister said on Thursday that Israel's security relationship with India is out in the open after years of being under wraps. He vows to play a bigger role in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's drive to build an industrial base. Modi's nationalist party has long seen Israel has a natural ally against Islamist militancy, and has openly cultivated warmer ties, beginning with a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York last year. Since then, various government ministers and top officials have been exchanging visits and on Wednesday, Moshe Ya'alon arrived in India. It was the first visit by an Israeli defense minister since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1992. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/yqa-0tW2ZmI/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com

Nutritionists Weigh In On The Best Food Apps Around

01:12
If you're not already using a nutrition app, you might want to consider downloading one--or two. New York City-based nutritionist Kristen Carlucci tells Health.com that nutrition apps are some of the best tools to reach and sustain your long-term health goals. Carlucci suggests MyFitnessPal for its impressive built-in food library. But when you're travelling, healthy fare is much harder to come by. That's why Health's contributing nutrition editor Cynthia Sass loves Food Tripping, an app that guides you towards healthier eateries along your route. As for labels, nutrition labels are meant to demystify products, but we often find ourselves more confused by them. No longer. For an easy fix, the Fooducate app lets you scan nutrition labels for a quick assessment of how healthy something really is. Finally, although grocery stores have become more accommodating to shoppers with food allergies, it can still be difficult to find products that fit your specific needs. For those with dietary restrictions, the app Ingredient quickly identifies products within your diet plan. Just apply a filter for your specific allergy, and the app will locate those gluten-free, soy-free, egg-free, nut-free, or dairy-free foods in nearby stores. http://www.health.com/nutrition/best-nutrition-apps http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
