Seattle Sees Unexpected Consequences From $15 Per Hour Min. Wage

01:03
Low wage workers in Seattle who spent months agitating for a city-wide $15-per-hour minimum wage were quite successful in their quest. But many have suddenly found that the new rate has had unexpected consequences. Some workers across the city are left telling bosses to give them fewer hours at the higher wage because a full week’s earnings now puts them past the threshold for some welfare payments such as food stamps and assistance with rent. There have been other unforeseen consequences to the higher wage. Some restaurants are tacking on a 15 percent surcharge onto customer’s bills in order to avoid firing workers. Other stores, restaurants, and small businesses are simply closing down because they can’t afford the wage hike. By March of this year, for instance, restaurant closings increased at a much higher than average rate in Seattle. Many restaurants noted that the new wage put labor costs at nearly 50 percent of operating costs, and that made profit margins disappear. http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2015/07/24/seattle-sees-unexpected-fallout-from-15-per-hour-min-wage/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by O&O Story Selection using http://wochit.com

Why Does Mexico Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day In A Big Way?

00:56
In the U.S., St. Patrick’s Day is usually celebrated with lots of parades and even more beer. Mexico shows its Irish pride in a different way. The day is celebrated as a sort-of military holiday, in honor of El Batallón de los San Patricios. Saint Patrick’s Battalion was a group of European immigrants and expatriates, overwhelmingly Irish, who had defected from the United States army to fight alongside Mexico during the U.S.-Mexico War of 1846-48. Their reason for deserting is largely attributed to religion. The U.S. and its army, was majority Protestant, and the Catholic servicemen felt marginalized and reminded of their experience under Protestant British rule in Ireland, so they fled to the Catholic confines of Mexico. http://fusion.net/story/282037/st-patricks-battalion-mexico-ireland/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Surprise! 7-week Old Baby Says "Hello"

01:01
Most babies usually wait until they are at least one year old before they utter their first word. So a mother from Northern Ireland remained speechless recently, when her seven-WEEK-old son did this: ][ The surprised mom, Toni McCann, said she sensed her son Cillian was trying to mimic her before ultimately uttering "Hello". "If I hadn't videoed it, I’m sure people wouldn't have believed me", she told the Daily Mail, adding that she probably wouldn't have believed it herself. null http://www.wochit.com

Japan Building "Great Wall" Against Tsunamis

01:08
Four years after the tsunami ravaged much of its northeastern coast and killed over eighteen-thousand people, Japan is constructing a nearly 250-mile chain of cement seawalls to fend off future towering waves. Opponents of the 6.8 billion dollar wall, which in some places will reach nearly five stories high, say that the massive concrete barrier will damage marine ecology and scenery and hinder vital fisheries. Moreover, it will do only little to protect residents, and even worse - it'll foster complacency. Instead, they call for people to either move to higher ground, or to create a "green wall" of trees that perhaps won't stop the floods, but will weaken the impact of the waves. However those in favor of the "great wall", say it's a necessary evil, and one that will provide some jobs, at least for a time. http://bigstory.ap.org/article/35d608bb1ebe4766b33146e39b6044ba/japan-opts-massive-costly-sea-wall-fend-tsunamis http://www.wochit.com

Lying Comment Earns Kellyanne Conway Unintented Laughter

01:13
After a series of bizarre television appearances in which her messaging conflicted with the White House, it seemed that Kellyanne Conway was in the Trump Dog house. But now, Conway is back in the public eye. While speaking at D.C.'s Newseum during an examination of journalism in the Trump era, Conway said - without a hint of irony - "You can turn on the TV... and people literally say things that just aren't true." The crowd immediately erupted in laughter, and Kellyanne had to wait several moments before resuming, nodding and smiling as if to note that she, too, was in on the joke. And in another memorable moment from Conway's interview, moderator Michael Wolff referenced the Washington Post's tagline, saying "I'm going to tell you, when they say 'democracy dies in darkness,' you're the darkness," after which Conway paused again for the audience's laughter, before responding "I'm not the darkness." A fitting answer for the woman who coined the term "alternative facts." http://www.elle.com/culture/career-politics/news/a44507/kellyanne-conways-newseum-panel/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Despite Opposition, Elvis Presley's Private Planes Will Remain at Graceland

01:01
The Associated Press reports that Elvis Presley's custom-designed airplanes – the Lisa Marie and the Hound Dog II – will remain permanent fixtures at Graceland. The late singer's Memphis estate issued a statement on Sunday confirming the plans – a change from previous arrangements to relocate Presley's tricked-out private jets to a nearby lot. The Lisa Marie, a Convair 880 named after the rock legend's daughter, features a red-white-and-blue exterior, gold-plated bathroom fixtures, a stereo system, a conference room and bed. According to a Julien's auction listing from January, Presley bought the jet from Delta Air Lines for $250,000 in April 1975; refurbishing brought the total to over $600,000, and he first boarded the craft in November of that year. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/despite-opposition-elvis-presleys-private-planes-will-remain-at-graceland-20150427 http://www.wochit.com

Researchers Hopeful New Treatment Leads To HIV Cure

01:13
A new treatment resulting from the partnership between Britain's National Institute for Health Research and other leading medical research organizations has scientists hopeful that they may have found a way to eradicate the HIV virus completely. The Collaborative entity known as HIV Eradication of Viral Reservoirs is comprised of clinicians, virologists, and immunologists, who have treated the first patient in an upcoming study that will involve 50 participants. Whereas previous HIV treatments use Antiretroviral Therapy - or ART - to stop the virus from copying itself and spreading - which often results with the virus' return when treatment ends, this new approach hopes to activate "sleeping" HIV cells and encourage a patient's own immune system to fight HIV. According to professor Sarah Fidler "This first participant has now completed the intervention and we have found it to be safe and well tolerated." But Fidler adds that "Only when all 50 study participants have completed the whole study, by 2018, will we be able to tell if there has been an effect on curing HIV." http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/10/03/Scientists-hope-for-HIV-cure-with-new-treatment/9551475522018/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Yoshinori Ohsumi Wins Nobel Prize In Medicine For His Work On Autophagy

01:07
Yoshinori Ohsumi is a biologist at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and this year’s winner for the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. Ohsumi has received the prize for his work on autophagy, a method for breaking down and recycling large pieces of cellular junk, such as clusters of damaged proteins or worn-out organelles. To keep recycling machinery in good condition is crucial for the cells' health. Not enough recycling can cause cellular trash to build up and lead to neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and too much recycling has been linked to cancer. According to biologist Maria Masucci of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, Ohsumi‘s discoveries helped reveal the mechanism and significance of a fundamental physiological process. She said, “There is growing hope that this knowledge will lead to the development of new strategies for the treatment of many human diseases.” https://www.sciencenews.org/article/deciphering-cell%E2%80%99s-recycling-machinery-earns-nobel http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

The Secret Message In Abraham Lincoln's Pocket Watch

01:11
In the 1850s Abraham Lincoln, then a successful lawyer, purchased a fine pocket watch from George Chatterton, a jeweler in Springfield, Illinois. In January 1861, South Carolina seceded from the Union, followed by six more states before Lincoln's inauguration. On April 12th, 1861, the American Civil War began with shots fired at Fort Sumter. The next day watchmaker Jonathan Dillon unscrewed the dial from Lincoln's watch and engraved a message with a sharp tool. Dillon then signed and dated the inscription and closed the dial. The inscription reads: "Jonathan Dillon... April 13th, 1861... Fort Sumter was attacked by the rebels on the above date... J Dillon, April 13th 1861, Washington... thank God we have a government." Lincoln never knew of the message he carried in his pocket. It is not known who added a carving of the name "Jeff Davis,' the leader of the Confederates. http://feeds.mashable.com/~r/Mashable/~3/MQ-cuqDXc3c/ http://www.wochit.com

Joe Biden Attends Son Beau Biden's Emotional Funeral

01:01
Beau Biden's viewing service was emotional to say the least. Vice President Joe Biden, whose son tragically passed away from brain cancer five days ago at the young age of 46, was surrounded by friends and family Thursday at Beau's public service and viewing at Legislative Hall in Dover, Delaware. Biden, his wife Jill Biden, Beau's wife and kids and the rest of their family were understandably emotional while watching honor guards carry Beau's casket, which was draped with an American flag. The famous family shed tears as they said goodbye to the former Attorney General, who had been battling brain cancer for several years. In addition to the service and viewing, Beau was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross, Delaware's highest honor, for his "heroism, meritorious service and outstanding achievement." http://www.eonline.com/news/663433/vice-president-joe-biden-attends-son-beau-biden-s-emotional-funeral-surrounded-by-family?cmpid=rss-000000-rssfeed-365-topstories&utm_source=eonline&utm_medium=rssfeeds&utm_campaign=rss_topstories http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

Mexico's President In Another Corruption Scandal

01:17
Once again, Enrique Peña Nieto and his family appear to be benefiting from his position as president of Mexico. José Luis Montenegro and Julio Roa are reporters at The Guardian. According to Fusion, they recently revealed that Mexican businessman Ricardo Pierdant, who has operations in both the U.S. and Mexico, appears to have paid taxes for Peña Nieto’s family and allowed them to use his luxury apartment in Key Biscayne, Florida. The journalists reported that Pierdant also used a holding company to pay $29,703 in property taxes for the President's wife Angelica Rivera's apartment in 2013. Stranger still, the apartments are connected by a private elevator and share the same telephone number. One has to wonder: What did Pierdant expect in return for lending out his million-dollar property and paying Rivera’s taxes? That's unknown at this time, but the journalists have explained that Pierdant’s company, Grupo Pierdant, is expected to bid for a lucrative government contract to manage seaports in Mexico. http://fusion.net/story/337255/jorge-ramos-another-scandal-pena-nieto/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Banksy Confirms He's Behind New Mural In South Wales

On Tuesday, street artist Banksy confirmed on Instagram that he is responsible for a mysterious piece of artwork that appeared in South Wales that morning. Banksy placed the work on two walls of a garage owned by a local steelworker in the Taibach area of Port Talbot. According to CNN, the art, which appears to pay homage to the town's industrial past, depicts a child playing in what looks like snow, but is actually ash from a skip fire. In July, properties and cars were covered with black dust from the town's steelworks, which has been suggested as a potential inspiration for the work. https://www.cnn.com/style/article/banksy-port-talbot-wales-gbr-scli/index.html http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

India to Sign Iran Port Deal, Ignores U.S. Warning

India will push ahead this week with plans to build a port in southeast Iran, two sources said, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi keen to develop trade ties with Central Asia and prepared to fend off U.S. pressure not to rush into any deals with Iran. India and Iran agreed in 2003 to develop a port at Chabahar on the Gulf of Oman, near Iran's border with Pakistan, but the venture has made little progress because of Western sanctions on Iran. Now, spurred on by Chinese President Xi Jinping's signing of energy and infrastructure agreements with Pakistan worth $46 billion, Modi wants to swiftly sign trade deals with Iran and other Gulf countries. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/OyDjpFbC4kQ/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com

Scientists Identify Treatment of Glioblastoma Brain Tumor

00:54
Researchers say they have identified a protein -- tyrosine phosphatase receptor type Z, or PTPRZ, -- as a drug target for patients with glioblastoma. Glioblastoma has been classified by the World Health Organization as the highest grade glioma, a type of brain tumor that is difficult to treat with the median survival rate of patients with glioblastoma is 14 months. There has been a lack of effective treatment options has spurred researchers to look for other treatment options. The study also showed that the allosteric inhibitor of PTPRZ known as NAZ2329 suppressed stem cell-like properties in glioblastoma cells in cultures and tumor growth. https://www.upi.com/Health_News/2017/07/18/Scientists-identify-drug-target-for-treatment-of-glioblastoma/6421500394895/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Exercise May Help Treat Drug Addiction

01:23
Adding exercise to methamphetamine addiction counseling leads to changes in the brain researchers say could help people trying to beat a habit, according to a new study. Researchers at the University of California Los Angeles report exercise helps the brain add new dopamine receptors, which they said lowers desire for methamphetamine and makes it easier to recover from addiction. Methamphetamine use creates a rush of dopamine, a substance that naturally provides sensations of pleasure and satisfaction but also causes the drug's approximately six-hour high, which results in a reduction in the number of dopamine receptors as the drug is used more and for longer periods of time. For the study, published in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology, researchers recruited 19 people, 10 of whom were asked to walk or jog on a treadmill three times a week for an hour and to do resistance training for eight weeks, while the other nine were given health education training but not asked to exercise. At the start of the study, there was no great difference in number of receptors between the two groups, at the end of the study, exercising participants had a 15 percent increase in receptors, while the education-only group was just 4 percent. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/04/27/Study-Exercise-may-help-treat-addiction/6831461758186/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Implanted Defibrillators Can Deliver Inappropriate Shocks, Driving Up Huge Bills

01:09
Implanted defibrillators can deliver a potentially lifesaving shock to a heart that's beating erratically. However, a new study shows that patients often wind up in the emergency room or the hospital needing medical procedures afterwards. According to UPI, that was the case whether the shock was needed or not--and in 38 percent of cases, the researchers added--it wasn't. Inappropriate shocks occur when the device mistakes an irregular heartbeat for ventricular arrhythmia, a condition that can cause the patient to die from cardiac arrest if not corrected. Cardiac arrest is when the heart suddenly stops beating. Aside from pain, anxiety and discomfort for the patient, there is the issue of money. The researchers found the average cost of health care following a shock was nearly $5,600 for an appropriate shock--and nearly $4,500 for an inappropriate shock. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2017/02/15/Shocks-from-implanted-defibrillators-trigger-health-costs-of-their-own/4231487189250/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Traveling Canadian Robot Destroyed In Philly

POLICE have little information about a four-faced robotic Canadian hitchhiker last seen intact near Old City's Elfreth's Alley before he was found beheaded, his torn-off arms at his side. "I just think someone saw it, probably came out of a bar and was drunk and beat the crap out of it," Philadelphia Police Detective Joe Murray told the Daily News yesterday. "Leaving it in Old City on a Saturday night is probably the worst idea ever. Anything could happen." Murray was speaking about hitchBOT, a "social experiment" from roboticists at Ryerson University, in Toronto, who didn't quite receive the "brotherly love and sisterly affection" our town is known for. He had an Android-tablet brain and stuck out his opposable thumb to encourage folks to pick him up, using a built-in camera to see and a microphone to hear, according to a Ryerson website set up for him. http://www.philly.com/philly/news/20150803_Traveling_Canadian_robot_destroyed_in_Philly.html http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by O&O Self Storyboarding using http://wochit.com

FDA Discovers Disturbing News About Parmesan Cheese

01:04
A recent investigation by the FDA indicates that people might be enjoying a lot more wood pulp in their cheese than they expected. A recently released document that relates to an ongoing cheese-related FDA investigation makes clear how widespread cheese fraud has been. It’s common for manufacturers to use a small amount of wood pulp as a bulking agent and the acceptable limit set by the FDA is just 2% of the total weight. However several manufacturers are reportedly using much, much more. One company, Castle Cheese, was reportedly producing fake parmesan cheese and distributing it to some of the largest grocery chains in the US including Target. Acting on a tip, the FDA inspected a Castle Cheese facility and found that it’s 100% grated parmesan cheese was actually equal parts swiss, mozzarella, white cheddar, and cellulose. http://www.geek.com/news/fda-discovers-that-100-real-parmesan-cheese-youre-eating-may-be-wood-2-1647488/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

People are Drowning Tortoises After Confusing Them With Sea Turtles

00:56
A new bulletin from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is reminding tourists and Floridians that all turtles are not equal. The commission received three reports in March from "helpful" samaritans that accidentally mistook a gopher tortoise for a sea turtle, releasing them into the ocean where they are less likely to end up as dinner for the many dangers that lurk on the beaches. Unfortunately, gopher tortoises can't swim. The land-dwelling tortoises often nest in beach dunes that are adjacent to the beaches where sea turtles nest, which can lead to the confusion. The two shelled creatures can be distinguished by their limbs. Gopher tortoises have toes with a claw on each toe, and sea turtles have flippers, for swimming. http://feeds.mashable.com/~r/Mashable/~3/tH7-WESCQqM/ http://www.wochit.com

'Phantom Limb' Pain Can Be Relieved Through Brain Training

01:09
People who undergo an amputation often experience pain and sensation from the limb that's no longer there. It's a phenomenon doctors call "phantom limb pain." But now, researchers say they've figured out a way to rewire the brain and reduce pain coming from a phantom limb. According to a new study, the technique essentially involves distracting the brain from mixed signals it may receive as a result of losing the limb. According to UPI, the research team used a brain-machine interface to decode the neural activity of the mental action needed for a patient to move their "phantom" hand, then linked those signals to a robot prosthetic limb. Patients experienced an increase in phantom pain if they tried to control the prosthetic arm by willing the movement of their missing arm. But patients' phantom pain decreased if they were trained to move the robot arm using the "wrong" side of the brain. For example, researchers said patients missing the left arm experienced reduced pain if they moved the prosthetic arm through neural signals associated with their right arm. Study co-author Ben Seymour says he hopes this research will provide an alternative to painkillers for people experiencing phantom limb pain. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/10/27/Brain-training-may-curb-phantom-limb-pain/4131477600155/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

The Less Obvious, Early Symptoms Of Parkinson's Disease

According to Reader's Digest, a 2013 Israeli study found handwriting analysis was able to identify patients in the early stages of Parkinson’s more than 97 per cent of the time. Other early indications of the condition can include a loss of smell. If you stop noticing pungent cologne and aren’t drawn to the aroma of mouth-watering food, pay attention. Intense dreams that cause you to thrash and kick in your bed can also be an indicator. When any of these symptoms last more than a couple of weeks, see a neurologist. The earlier the disease is diagnosed, and the sooner you get control of the symptoms, the better your quality of life will be. http://www.readersdigest.ca/health/conditions/10-red-flag-symptoms/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Calif. Prison Riot Sparked by Stabbing of 'San Quentin Six' Inmate...

01:11
Hugo Pinell, a notorious California inmate whose 50 years behind bars included a violent escape attempt from San Quentin, was stabbed to death by two prisoners, sparking a brief but bloody riot at a prison near Sacramento, authorities said on Thursday. After Pinell was attacked on Wednesday, as many as 70 prisoners began fighting in a 20-minute melee that sent 11 inmates to the hospital, one of whom remained in critical condition on Thursday, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said. Pinell, who had been held in near-solitary confinement in the Security Housing Units at two of California's toughest prisons for longer than any other inmate, was moved to the general population at California State Prison-Sacramento in 2014, after the state changed its policies for placement in those units. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/domesticNews/~3/-z1AO4lLkrg/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

NBC Hit With Criticism After Ignoring Olympic Swimmer's Partner

On Tuesday NBC received even more flack regarding their coverage of the Rio Olympics after commentators failed to mention or acknowledge the relationship between British diver Tom Daley and Oscar winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black even after cameras lingered on Black's crew for some time. Viewers went off on Twitter asking NBC why their commentators "can't get anything right?" NBC responded saying, "“With more than 11,000 athletes at the Games, it isn’t always possible to identify every competitor’s significant other, regardless of their sexual orientation.” http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/thr/television/~3/LssMntHeWmg/rio-olympics-nbc-slammed-twitter-918611 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Scientists Use Stem Cell Therapy To Treat Leading Cause Of Blindness

00:51
2 (UPI) -- Researchers made advances toward creating stem cell-derived retinal cells used to treat a leading cause of blindness, scientists at the National Eye Institute said. NEI scientists found that tiny tube-like protrusions called primary cilia on a layer of cells in the back of the eye, known as the retinal pigment epithelium, are essential for the survival of the retina's light-sensing photoreceptors, according to a new study published in the journal Cell Reports. The discovery has advanced scientists' ability to use induced-pluripotent stem cells to create adult RPE for transplants to treat patients with geographic atrophy -- or dry age-related macular degeneration -- a leading cause of blindness in the United States. https://www.upi.com/Health_News/2018/01/02/Scientists-advance-stem-cell-therapy-for-a-leading-cause-of-blindness/8571514929118/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Seaweed's Farming Revolution Caught In Net Of Red Tape

01:21
Seaweed cultivation in the U.S. is growing quickly, cresting on its promise as a sustainable, low-impact form of aquaculture that could help feed millions. Not only that, kelp also reduces the acid level of the ocean. But tough state rules surrounding commercial use of coastal resources are preventing many would-be entrepreneurs from diving into the market. Dr. Charles Yarish is an internationally recognized seaweed expert and marine sciences professor at the University of Connecticut in Stamford. He says fifteen farms currently have permits to commercially grow kelp in the Northeast, up from zero prior to 2008. But most would-be kelp farmers on the West Coast are in limbo, as states work to establish regulations. So far, only Washington has regulations in place, and just one research project under way. Even in states where regulations are in place, however, Yarish told NBC News the permitting process is "very onerous." Yarish says the approval process is deliberate because regulators are determined to avoid environmental damage - including excessive nutrient discharge, escapes of farmed animals and spread of disease - inflicted by some big aquaculture operations of decades past. http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/red-tape-slows-bloom-seaweed-farming-s-green-revolution-n613526 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Depression's Physical Source Discovered

01:02
In a new study, an international research team says they have identified the physical source of depression in the brain. The condition is one of the most common mental ailments in the world Investigators traced depression to the lateral orbitofrontal cortex. It's the part of the brain responsible for a non-reward mechanism. According to the research team, this is likely the reason people living with depression often feel a sense of loss, disappointment and low self-esteem. Researchers also linked depression to the medial orbitofrontal cortex and memory systems, in addition to the lateral orbitofrontal cortex. They say this explains why individuals with depression have difficulty accounting for happy memories. Comprised of investigators from the University of Warwick in England and Fudan University in China, the research team's findings were published in the journal Brain. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/10/18/Scientists-discover-physical-source-of-depression/2911476792291/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

New Stem Process Successfully Regenerates Damaged Cornea

00:45
Today, Nature Online reported that scientists in Wales and Japan were able to reprogram cells to become stem cells which can then regrow cornea tissue. This means that the human eye could eventually regenerate or replay any lens that was damaged by cataracts or injury. The process was successfully carried out on the damaged cornea of rabbits who now enjoy fully restored vision. The drawback is that it takes months to regrow the cornea while surgery can replace damaged lenses with artificial ones much more rapidly. https://www.sciencenews.org/article/new-techniques-regrow-lens-cornea-tissue http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

If Your DNA Is Right, You Can Lease Land in Hawaii for $1 a Year

00:52
Hawaiians will for the first time be allowed to submit DNA evidence to prove their native ancestry in an effort to become eligible for low-cost state land leases. The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands reached the agreement after the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation filed a lawsuit in 2012 on behalf of Leighton Pang Kee. According to BuzzFeed, Kee had applied through the organization for housing and submitted DNA evidence to establish his relationship with the unnamed biological father on his birth certificate. To be eligible for the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands housing, Hawaiians must prove they have 50% or more blood quantum. They can then apply for a 99-year lease of state land for $1 a year. Pang Kee was adopted, but he knew who his late father was and found his father’s brother, who took a DNA test to prove that they were related. http://www.buzzfeed.com/mbvd/hawaii-to-allow-dna-testing-as-proof-of-native-ancestry?utm_term=4ldqpia http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

700 Migrants Feared Dead in Mediterranean Shipwreck

01:05
A major rescue operation is under way in the Mediterranean after as many as 700 migrants are feared to have drowned on Sunday, in what could prove to be the worst disaster yet involving migrants being smuggled to Europe. According to reports, the accident happened 60 miles off the Libyan coast and 120 miles south of the Italian island of Lampedusa, after the migrants saw a merchant ship in the distance, scrambled to attract its attention - and over-balanced their boat. Italian coastguards have retrieved dozens of survivors so far. But based on numbers given by survivors, the UN’s refugee agency, UNHCR, said that up to 700 more could still be in the water. Only last week, 400 immigrants drowned in a similar incident, and those deaths prompted fresh calls for Europe to reinstate full-scale search-and-rescue operations in the Mediterranean. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/apr/19/700-migrants-feared-dead-mediterranean-shipwreck-worst-yet http://www.wochit.com
